DESCRIPTION:Join us this summer for a new program called Art Explored! Story Time at the New Mexico Museum of Art Library. SUMMARY:Pair of events highlight the diversity of programming at NM Museum of Natural History & Science
DESCRIPTION:Albuquerque\, NM – Join us at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) on July 12 for a pair of special events that showcase the wide range of offerings at the Museum.  \nWhat: The next Relaxed Night from NMMNHS is almost here! Relaxed Nights are evenings for anyone who might get overwhelmed by crowds\, sounds\, or flashing lights. Or\, for visitors who simply enjoy smaller crowds.   \nOn Relaxed Nights\, the Museum will be set up in a sensory-friendly way: the sound will be turned down\, the Bisti Beast will be “resting” with no movement or roaring\, and the Planetarium will have the lights on low and the volume turned down.  \nThese evenings are for all ages and will feature special\, sensory-friendly offerings in the museum.  \nOn the same day in a different part of the Museum\, the Space Science department will be celebrating the release of the first images from NASA’s high-powered James Webb Space Telescope by simultaneously broadcasting the images as they’re released.   \nThese images\, from the world’s premier infrared space observatory\, will show infrared radiation from Solar System planets\, exoplanets\, stars\, nebulae\, and galaxies\, providing new insight into the early universe and other astronomical mysteries.  \nThe Museum will also be hosting a panel of experts.  University of New Mexico professor Tony Hull will start with a brief introduction\, then he will be joined by NASA scientists in an online program to discuss the never-before-seen images.  \nThe Space Science event is free\, and admission to Relaxed Night is $5. Tickets to Relaxed Night are available at https://www.nmnaturalhistory.org/events/relaxed-nights-museum-3.  \nWhen: Both events will take place Tuesday\, July 12. Relaxed Night will run from 4-7 p.m.\, while the Space Science offerings will feature a pair of activities throughout the day.  \nNASA will release its images at 8:30 a.m. The Space Science expert panel will convene at 3:30 p.m. that afternoon.  \nWhere: Both events will take place in different parts of NMMNHS\, located at 1801 Mountain Road NW in Albuquerque. Relaxed Night activities will take place primarily in the Museum lobby\, and visitors attending Relaxed Night should enter through the main entrance so as not to disrupt visitors attending the NASA event.  \nActivities related to the Webb image broadcast will take place in the STEM Theater. Because the Museum is closed on Tuesdays\, Space Science has requested that visitors use the door in the education wing to enter and exit.   \nThis door is located on the north side of the museum\, next to the parking lot\, behind a sculpture of a human figure holding an arc of birds. Do not use the main entrance by the dinosaurs for this event.  \nWhy: Between offering access to one of the most awaited image releases in the astronomical world and making the history and biology behind chocolate accessible to all audiences\, the Museum truly offers something for everyone!

SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series Jewish Women Pioneering the Frontier Trail in the American West
DESCRIPTION:Jews\, particularly Jewish women\, found unprecedented opportunity in the early American West. Jewish women here took advantage of those opportunities well in advance of women in other areas of the country and took leading positions in social welfare\, business\, education\, the professions\, and politics while at the same time ensuring Jewish continuity. Western Jewish women’s involvement at the vanguard of these efforts is striking given their relatively small numbers. They synthesized the Jewish\, American\, and western values they had developed\, and in the process\, they helped shape the contours of the future of western towns and cities as well as the American Jewish community. \nDr. Abrams is a professor at the Center for Judaic Studies and the University Libraries at the University of Denver. She is the author of numerous books and articles in the fields of Jewish\, medical\, and American History in academic and popular venues\, including Jewish Women Pioneering the Frontier Trail: A History in the American West. Her book Revolutionary Medicine: The Founding Fathers and Mothers in Sickness and in Health was named the “Top Book for Docs” by Medscape in 2013. Her latest book\, A View from Abroad: The Story of John and Abigail Adams in Europe was published by NYU Press in 2021. \nThis presentation is being jointly sponsored by the Fray Angelico Chavez Library and the Friends of History in conjunction with a grant  from the Sue and Felix Warburg Collection in Honor of Willi and Flora Spiegelberg.  The grant to the New Mexico History Museum provides resources to make  collection acquisitions and to undertake research on Jewish Women Pioneers in 19th Century New Mexico History.  \nYou can register for the lecture at: https://friendsofhistorynm.org/event/jewish-women-pioneering-the-frontier-trail-in-the-american-west/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:NM RESIDENT FREE SUNDAY
DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org \n706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n

DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. Please ask the front desk about special educational programs.* \nThe Dawn ‘til Dusk Days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting\, sketching\, and landscape photography. SUMMARY:Here\, Now and Always Opening July 2\, 3\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:When the first iteration of Here\, Now and Always opened in 1997\, it was considered revolutionary. It was the first exhibition of its kind to a museum space\, moving authority away from historically non-Native academics and scholars. Led by a primarily Indigenous curatorial team\, it centered the voices\, perspectives\, and narratives on the Indigenous people it represented while concurrently foregrounding meaningful and long-lasting partnerships with Native communities. \nFor the past twenty-five years\, the exhibition has been considered required viewing for everyone from schoolchildren to scholars\, but much like Native cultures it has continued to evolve. Accordingly\, the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture closed Here\, Now and Always in 2019 for a complete re-imagining. Now\, the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs invites the public to experience the exhibition as they have never seen it before. \nSituated within the museum’s 8\,400-square-foot Amy Rose Bloch Wing\, Here\, Now and Always features more than 600 objects from the museum’s collection. More importantly\, it continues to express a fundamental truth about the quintessence of Native communities in the Southwest. To quote the late Zuni scholar and former MIAC curator of ethnology Edmund J. Ladd\, “I am here. I am here\, now. I have been here\, always.” \nThis new iteration of the exhibition also includes contemporary narratives from the next generation of Indigenous people in the Southwest\, as well as updated technology and state-of-the-art exhibition design. Similar to its first iteration\, it is organized around the core themes of Emergence\, Cycles\, Ancestors\, Community and Home\, Trade and Exchange\, Language and Song\, Arts and Survival and Resilience.  These themes structure the narratives evoked by the items on display. \nWhile a lot has changed since 1997\, Here\, Now and Always has remained revolutionary. The exhibition and the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture offer an inside perspective largely unique among museums. \nHere\, Now and Always opens July 2 and 3 on Museum Hill in Santa Fe at Museum of Indian Arts & Culture\, a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. \nPlan your visit\, check out upcoming events\, support the museum and learn more at our website

SUMMARY:Summer Letters From the Reservation 2022
DESCRIPTION:Summer Letters from the Reservation is a collection of archival letters and oral histories from Fort Sumner Historic Site that describes the mindset of the United States Government towards Tribal polices in the American Southwest and the daily tribulations experienced by the Diné (Navajo) and the Ndé (Mescalero Apache) in the months of June through August (1863-1868) while held captive on the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. These summer letters and oral histories\, read in chronological order by people from around the United States\, reveals a micro-history of the failed experiment that was Fort Sumner and a moment in history when humanity was lost. \nThis program is now live on the attached link: https://nmhistoricsites.org/bosque-redondo/virtual-events/letters
