SUMMARY:NM Resident FREE Sunday
DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org \n706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n

SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series Evolution: Converging Tradition and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Cochiti artist\, Virgil Ortiz takes us on a journey through the processes he uses to create his artwork. Ortiz learned to make pottery from his grandmother\, Laurencita Herrera\, and mother\, Seferina Ortiz\, both renowned Pueblo potters.  From gathering and processing clay and plant materials with family members to coiling\, sculpting\, painting\, and firing his works of art\, Virgil shows us his creative process of working with ceramics\, fashion\, glass\, and metal. The final product is an innovative take on century-old traditions. He has taken the art of traditional pottery making and transformed it into a contemporary vision. \nThrough his work\, Virgil teaches Pueblo history to multiple generations of viewers around the world by telling the story of the 1680 Pueblo Revolt using a cast of sci-fi superheroes he’s created over the years–characters like the Blind Archers\, Venutian Soldiers\, Translator Army\, and his latest\, the Recon Watchmen. His ceramic figures tell the story of a futuristic revolt in 2180\, in which Pueblo people work to restore balance to their lives and the environment.  \nVirgil Ortiz is one of the most avant-garde artists of his time. With a career spanning four decades\, Ortiz’s artistry extends across various media and boundaries—challenging societal expectations and breaking taboos. His vision fuses his Pueblo culture with sci-fi\, fantasy\, and apocalyptic themes\, yielding imagery that is both provocative and futuristic. Ortiz’s works are exhibited in museum collections worldwide\, including Fondation Cartier pour I’art Contemporain\, Smithsonian Institution\, Minneapolis Institute of Art\, Peabody Essex\, and Denver Art Museum. Recently named the recipient of the 2022 Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Living Treasure Award\, Ortiz also collaborated on a newly released book\, Virgil Ortiz: ReVOlution. This mid-career monograph retrospective presents a view into Ortiz’s transformative pottery and art\, illuminating his creative and artistic expressions. \nThis presentation is jointly sponsored by the New Mexico History Museum and the Friends of History in conjunction with the opening of the Museum’s exhibit: Honoring Tradition and Innovation: 100 Years of Santa Fe’s Indian Market\,1922-2022\, opening on 7 August 2022 thru August 2023. \nThe presentation will be available here: https://youtu.be/eraUdIyQtkU  \n

SUMMARY:Baile (dance) with Lone Piñon and Lucy Salazar
DESCRIPTION:Northern New Mexico música buena evolved together with community dancing in bailes\, fandangos\, weddings\, and celebrations\, long before there was a division of audience\, stage\, and performance that we experience today around music.  The melodies and rhythms of the violins\, accordions and guitars extended into the community through the feet and bodies of the dancers moving in rhythm\, and their energy in motion in turn influenced the musicians.  The whole equation and chemistry of the resulting baile (or fandango\, as it was called long ago) is joyful\, social\, cross-cultural\, playful\, expressive\, uplifting\, and facilitates community bonding and healing (and it’s good exercise!).  Lone Piñon and dance instructor Lucy Salazar work together to renew the structure of music and dance that has been passed down from generation to generation for many centuries but that takes a new form and serves a new purpose each time it is recreated and reembodied by the community of people present.  From listening to a recording or concert you can enjoy how New Mexico traditional music sounds\, but if you have a chance to come to a baile you will have the privilege of physically understanding why it sounds the way it does. \nDances include la varsoviana\, valse de la escoba\, la vaquera\, la cuna\, el taleán\, la camila\, la marcha\, las cuadrillas\, valse de los paños\, and more.

SUMMARY:Transgressions and Amplifications: Mixed-Media Photography of the 1960s and 1970s
DESCRIPTION:July 23\, 2022 – Jan. 8\, 2023\, New Wing Galleries \nAt a time when the black-and-white camera image dominated the field of photography\, a small cadre of American artists began developing new approaches to the medium that brought photography into conversation with other art forms. Against the backdrop of the Vietnam conflict and social justice movements\, these artists incorporated historic photo processes but also printmaking\, collage\, and new technologies such as photocopying and Verifax\, even bringing photography off the wall with books and sculptural pieces. \nTransgressions and Amplifications: Mixed-Media Photography of the 1960s and 1970s examines this inventive work as it developed into the 1960s and 1970s and reinvigorated the vocabulary of photography. Several key practitioners settled in New Mexico\, making them important touchstones for the museum’s collection and reinforcing the state’s reputation as a place for creative innovation. Among the artists with work in the exhibition are Thomas F. Barrow\, Darryl Curran\, Robert Fichter\, Betty Hahn\, Robert Heinecken\, Joan Lyons\, Jerry McMillan\, Joyce Neimanas\, Bea Nettles\, Keith A. Smith\, Michael Stone\, and Alex Traube. Much of the art is drawn from the museum’s collection with significant loans from the University of New Mexico Art Museum and additional pieces from the Center for Creative Photography\, George Eastman Museum\, and other generous lenders. \n  \nThomas J. SUMMARY:Conversation with Papier-Mâché Artist Roberto Benavidez
DESCRIPTION:Roberto Benavidez works in the Mexican tradition of cartonería\, or papier-mâché. Benavidez grew up in South Texas\, and like many Mexican and American children\, he grew up with piñatas to mark celebrations. As part of a mixed-heritage family (Benavidez’s father is Mexican and his mother American)\, Benavidez conveys his sense of a hybrid identity through piñata forms such as Illuminated Piñatas No. 1 and 2\, now in MOIFA’s collection\, that reference the hybrid creatures that inhabit the margins of illuminated manuscripts. This particular series re-creates creatures from the Luttrell Psalter (ca. 1325-40)\, housed today in the British Library. Although trained as a sculptor at Pasadena City College\, Roberto Benavidez is self-taught as a piñatero (piñata maker) and opted to work in a tradition associated with his Mexican-American roots. On his website\, he describes himself in this way: “Half-breed\, South Texan\, queer\, figurative sculptor specializing in the pinata form; playing on themes of race\, sexuality\, art\, sin\, humor\, ephemerality and beauty.” By blending two traditions–the piñata and the illuminated manuscript–Benavidez reconsiders both and at the same time offers paths of innovation

SUMMARY:Pair of events highlight the diversity of programming at NM Museum of Natural History & Science
DESCRIPTION:Albuquerque\, NM – Join us at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) on July 12 for a pair of special events that showcase the wide range of offerings at the Museum.  \nWhat: The next Relaxed Night from NMMNHS is almost here! Relaxed Nights are evenings for anyone who might get overwhelmed by crowds\, sounds\, or flashing lights. Or\, for visitors who simply enjoy smaller crowds.   \nOn Relaxed Nights\, the Museum will be set up in a sensory-friendly way: the sound will be turned down\, the Bisti Beast will be “resting” with no movement or roaring\, and the Planetarium will have the lights on low and the volume turned down.  \nThese evenings are for all ages and will feature special\, sensory-friendly offerings in the museum.  \nOn the same day in a different part of the Museum\, the Space Science department will be celebrating the release of the first images from NASA’s high-powered James Webb Space Telescope by simultaneously broadcasting the images as they’re released.   \nThese images\, from the world’s premier infrared space observatory\, will show infrared radiation from Solar System planets\, exoplanets\, stars\, nebulae\, and galaxies\, providing new insight into the early universe and other astronomical mysteries.  \nThe Museum will also be hosting a panel of experts.  University of New Mexico professor Tony Hull will start with a brief introduction\, then he will be joined by NASA scientists in an online program to discuss the never-before-seen images.  \nThe Space Science event is free\, and admission to Relaxed Night is $5. Tickets to Relaxed Night are available at https://www.nmnaturalhistory.org/events/relaxed-nights-museum-3.  \nWhen: Both events will take place Tuesday\, July 12. Relaxed Night will run from 4-7 p.m.\, while the Space Science offerings will feature a pair of activities throughout the day.  \nNASA will release its images at 8:30 a.m. The Space Science expert panel will convene at 3:30 p.m. that afternoon.  \nWhere: Both events will take place in different parts of NMMNHS\, located at 1801 Mountain Road NW in Albuquerque. Relaxed Night activities will take place primarily in the Museum lobby\, and visitors attending Relaxed Night should enter through the main entrance so as not to disrupt visitors attending the NASA event.  \nActivities related to the Webb image broadcast will take place in the STEM Theater. Because the Museum is closed on Tuesdays\, Space Science has requested that visitors use the door in the education wing to enter and exit.   \nThis door is located on the north side of the museum\, next to the parking lot\, behind a sculpture of a human figure holding an arc of birds. Do not use the main entrance by the dinosaurs for this event.  \nWhy: Between offering access to one of the most awaited image releases in the astronomical world and making the history and biology behind chocolate accessible to all audiences\, the Museum truly offers something for everyone!

SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series Jewish Women Pioneering the Frontier Trail in the American West
DESCRIPTION:Jews\, particularly Jewish women\, found unprecedented opportunity in the early American West. Jewish women here took advantage of those opportunities well in advance of women in other areas of the country and took leading positions in social welfare\, business\, education\, the professions\, and politics while at the same time ensuring Jewish continuity. Western Jewish women’s involvement at the vanguard of these efforts is striking given their relatively small numbers. They synthesized the Jewish\, American\, and western values they had developed\, and in the process\, they helped shape the contours of the future of western towns and cities as well as the American Jewish community. \nDr. Abrams is a professor at the Center for Judaic Studies and the University Libraries at the University of Denver. She is the author of numerous books and articles in the fields of Jewish\, medical\, and American History in academic and popular venues\, including Jewish Women Pioneering the Frontier Trail: A History in the American West. Her book Revolutionary Medicine: The Founding Fathers and Mothers in Sickness and in Health was named the “Top Book for Docs” by Medscape in 2013. Her latest book\, A View from Abroad: The Story of John and Abigail Adams in Europe was published by NYU Press in 2021. \nThis presentation is being jointly sponsored by the Fray Angelico Chavez Library and the Friends of History in conjunction with a grant  from the Sue and Felix Warburg Collection in Honor of Willi and Flora Spiegelberg.  The grant to the New Mexico History Museum provides resources to make  collection acquisitions and to undertake research on Jewish Women Pioneers in 19th Century New Mexico History.  \nYou can register for the lecture at: https://friendsofhistorynm.org/event/jewish-women-pioneering-the-frontier-trail-in-the-american-west/ \n  \n
