DESCRIPTION:Camille Bernal (Taos) is a Pueblo potter and experimenter–always exploring new forms\, style\, and techniques to create pottery that is uniquely hers. Camille draws inspiration from the spectacular scenery that surrounds her childhood home located on the Taos Pueblo reservation where she lives and works.\n \nEhren Kee Natay (Kewa/Santo Domingo Pueblo\, Diné/Navajo) is a multidisciplinary artist residing in his hometown of Santa Fe. His principal creative medium is music\, and he has been playing percussion since the age of ten. At age twenty-five\, he began taking classes in polychrome pottery under the guidance of teacher Shawn Tafoya at the Poeh Cultural Center\, Pueblo of Pojoaque. His latest work combines media to create multisensory art experiences.\n \nMartha Romero (Nambé) is a teacher\, micaceous clay artist\, and community sharer. Martha’s pottery journey was greatly influenced by her mother\, Rose Alice Baca. She has studied under such instructors as Clarence Cruz\, Pamela Lujan-Hauer\, and Michael Bancroft\, and her work has been shown in various markets\, exhibitions\, and galleries.\n \n \n \nThese programs are made possible through generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts.\n \n

DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. Please ask the front desk about special educational programs.* \nThe Dawn ‘til Dusk Days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting\, sketching\, and landscape photography. SUMMARY:Our Lady of the Tortilla comes to the National Hispanic Cultural Center in early September
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC)\, Sandia Performing Arts Company presents Our Lady of the Tortilla\, a play about family love that perseveres even in ridiculous circumstances.  \nWhat: Our Lady of the Tortilla is a play by Luis Santeiro\, directed by Rayrey Griego.  \nThe story focuses on the Cruz family\, which is volatile even in the best of times. On this particular day\, Nelson\, the youngest son\, enters the house in a panic to hide the more obvious religious relics from the sight of his “gringo” girlfriend\, who is visiting for the weekend.   \nNelson’s mother\, Dahlia\, is obsessed with retrieving her husband from his new girlfriend; Eddie\, her elder son\, shows up in a van with his failed life and pregnant girlfriend. But the “real” pandemonium is caused by sweet\, long-suffering Dolores\, Dahlia’s old-maid sister\, when she sees the face of the Holy Virgin in a tortilla.   \nThis miracle brings hordes of believers and reporters to camp out on the Cruz’s lawn to await further miracles. As the family struggles with beliefs and conflicts\, old and new\, the endurance of family love is revealed to be the real miracle.  \nTickets are $22\, with a $2 discount for NHCC Foundation members. DESCRIPTION:Natalie is a native of South Africa and a grateful citizen of Santa Fe. For many years\, she admired and lived with the art being produced by rural and urban cooperatives and artists in South Africa.  She knew she wanted to open a space to showcase and celebrate this exceptional work. Natalie founded Casa Nova in 2003 as a home for the exceptional craft and design talent she saw in her native land and brought South African folk art to Santa Fe.  A gallery was born within a contemporary context to showcase rural creativity\, fine craft\, cutting-edge urban design and folk art.  A special emphasis was placed on the work of cooperatives which had been funded in the interest of poverty alleviation and creating sustainable livelihoods\, many of them being women. \nEvent Details \nThis event is limited to 14 people. \nRegistration is for current FOFA members.  A single membership allows access to one ticket and a dual membership allows for two tickets\, but each member must register separately. \nRegistration cost is $100  \nNet proceeds will benefit MOIFA’s high-quality educational programs and world-class exhibitions. SUMMARY:Take a deeper look at the James Webb Space Telescope
DESCRIPTION:If the photos of far-distant galaxies taken by the James Webb Space Telescope left you wanting more\, head to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) on Saturday\, August 20 for a deeper look at the unique images\, led by experts who assisted with the mission.  \nWhat: The Museum is hosting a special Space Science event on August 20 featuring experts from the University of New Mexico who participated in the mission itself. UNM professors Dr. Diana Dragomir\, who works on the team of astronomers interpreting Webb’s images\, and Prof. Tony Hull\, who supervised the polishing of Webb’s mirrors\, will both be at the Museum to describe how the space observatory functions and explain what we have learned from the information it’s collected so far. The event is included with Museum admission\, making this an extra-special day to visit!  \nWho:  \nDr. Dragomir is Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UNM. Her research focuses on the demographics and atmospheres of exoplanets smaller than Neptune. She studies them with NASA’s TESS\, Spitzer\, Hubble\, and now the Webb space telescopes\, as well as with a variety of ground-based observatories.  \nTony Hull is Adjunct Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UNM. He was previously the Webb telescope’s Program Manager and Director for Optical Fabrication of the entire suite of Webb mirrors.  \nWhen: The main event will be a presentation by Professor Hull at 1:00 p.m.\, where he will share insights into Webb’s mission that you won’t be able to find anywhere else! Other events happening from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. include VR experiences\, table activities\, and videos.  \nWhere:  Professor Hull’s presentation will take place in the Planetarium with a limited number of seats available on a first-come\, first-served basis. A variety of other activities will take place in the Museum’s atrium. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is located at 1701 Mountain Rd. NW in Albuquerque.  \nWhy: The images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope captivated the world when they were released earlier this summer. DESCRIPTION:Pueblo Indian pottery has long been exhibited and interpreted in the academic and museum worlds through singular\, often generic\, points of view: as ethnographic remnants of the archaeological past or as fine art examples aligned with milestones in Western art history and culture. \nBut the launch of a unique traveling exhibition featuring over 100 historic and contemporary works in clay offers a visionary understanding of Pueblo pots as vessels of community-based knowledge and personal experience. \nOriginating in the cradle of the Indigenous Southwest\, Grounded in Clay: The Spirit of Pueblo Pottery is a rare exhibition curated by the Native American communities it represents. The project gives authority and voice to the Pueblo Pottery Collective\, a group of over 60 individual members of 21 tribal communities who selected and wrote about artistically or culturally distinctive pots from two significant Pueblo pottery collections—the Indian Arts Research Center of the School for Advanced Research (SAR) in Santa Fe and the Vilcek Foundation of New York. The Santa Fe exhibition includes 11 pieces from the Laboratory of Anthropology\, part of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. \nOrganized by SAR and the Vilcek Foundation\, Grounded in Clay debuts July 31\, 2022\, on unceded Tewa Indian lands at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe before traveling nationally in 2023. DESCRIPTION:Pueblo Independence Day returns to Jemez Historic Site on August 14! \nStarting at 10 a.m.\, the site will welcome visitors for the first time in two years to enjoy traditional Native American dances from Jemez Pueblo dancers\, tour the ancestral ruins of Giusewa Pueblo and San Jose Mission\, shop arts and crafts\, and grab a bite to eat.   \nPueblo Independence Day commemorates August 10\, 1680\, the day the Pueblo people united to drive the Spanish from their homelands. By that time\, the Pueblo people had endured nearly one hundred years of colonization\, turmoil\, and the loss of cultural traditions. Po’Pay\, a holy man from Ohkay Owingeh\, organized the revolt: he sent runners to each of the pueblos with a knotted cord. Each knot represented a day. When the last knot was untied\, the day of uprising had come. The revolt was successful\, forcing the Spanish to modern-day El Paso\, Texas\, and the Pueblo peoples won their independence. While the Spanish ultimately returned in 1692\, the revolt was successful in unifying many Native American peoples and winning some concessions from their colonizers.  \nToday\, Pueblo Independence Day is an important occasion to celebrate the Pueblo people’s cultural traditions\, lands\, languages\, religions\, and sovereignty. Join New Mexico Historic Sites in honoring this event at Jemez Historic Site!

DESCRIPTION:Painted Reflections with Joe Traugott \nNever before the subject of a museum exhibition\, Painted Reflections offers new insights into the study of Pueblo art through an analysis of the visual structure of ceramic design. The exhibition also demonstrates the ways in which contemporary Indigenous artists are using isomeric design in their work\, placing ancestral ceramics in conversation with the innovations of contemporary artists. \nPainted Reflections emphasizes the sophisticated aesthetic qualities of Pueblo art through the study of reversible optical illusions and ambiguous figure-ground relationships. Beginning around 900 AD\, Ancestral Pueblo artists began producing new designs on their ceramics—they painted pairs of motifs called isomers\, or equal forms. From a conventional perspective\, these works appear as painted motifs on unpainted backgrounds. But simultaneously\, they also appear as unpainted images on painted backdrops. The exhibition contextualizes isomeric design within larger artistic trends and trajectories\, bridging the gaps between art history\, anthropology\, and archaeology\, and includes examples of isomeric designs made by both ancestral and contemporary artists.  \nPainted Reflections is co-curated by Joseph Traugott\, Ph.D.\, retired curator at the New Mexico Museum of Art\, Antonio R. Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo)\, curator of ethnology at MIAC\, and Scott G. Ortman\, Ph.D.\, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado—Boulder. The exhibition is based in-part on Painted Reflections: Isomeric Design in Ancestral Pueblo Pottery\, a book written by the co-curators and published by the Museum of New Mexico Press in 2018.   \nBreakfast with the Curators is a series of lectures and artists presentations hosted by the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture at Weldon’s Museum Hill Cafe in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. SUMMARY:Dawn ’til Dusk Day
DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. Please ask the front desk about special educational programs.* \nThe Dawn ‘til Dusk Days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting\, sketching\, and landscape photography. Artists show their latest work and compete for awards in the prestigious judged art competition. Since its humble beginnings held in Santa Fe’s Armory on the current site of the NMHM\, the market generates today upwards of $160 million annually in revenues for artists and the community\, and serves as a forum for shared cultural exchanges with visitors from all over the globe.  \nThe market has been a family matter since its inception\, with several generations of artists often participating in the creative process and sharing the same Indian Market booth.
