SUMMARY:THE POTTERY DEMONSTRATION by Lorraine Gala Lewis scheduled for Saturday\, September 17th\, has been postponed to a later date. Ancestral Inspiration Painted Reflection Isomeric Design in Ancestral Pueblo Pottery
DESCRIPTION:Lorraine Gala Lewis is a potter who is known for gaining inspiration from Ancestral Pueblo motifs\, shapes\, and styles. In discussing her work with King Galleries\, Lewis says\, “I delved into this and began collecting materials\, visiting museums\, and viewing private collections\, focusing on works dating from 850 ad to 1200 AD . Studying these early art forms led to rediscovering our ancestral lands; these visits enhanced my creativity. The stories of our early paintings\, petroglyphs and rock carvings made me pay closer attention to detail.  \nMIAC Lobby · Free with museum admission \nIndianArtsAndCulture.org/calendar \nThis lecture series is generously funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Frontiers in Science: A Universal Method for Detecting Disease With Harshini Mukundan
DESCRIPTION:Frontiers in Science presents Harshini Mukundan and a look at how our own immune system inspired a new\, universal approach to diagnosing emerging infectious diseases. Join us for this free public talk on Friday\, September 16\, in Santa Fe at the St. Francis Auditorium.\n \nEmerging infectious diseases are a major concern to national health security\, as exemplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to prepare against unknown threats\, we need an arsenal of tools — diagnostics\, therapeutics\, vaccines — that can be used broadly against a variety of pathogens.\n \nOur own innate immune system can recognize the entire gamut of pathogens that inhabit the Earth — whether it has seen them before or not! Inspired by this complex and beautiful pattern recognition system\, Mukundan and her colleagues at Los Alamos National Laboratory have developed a universal diagnostic approach. Mukundan will discuss this approach and other new tools in the fight against pathogens. This series is a public service of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Fellows.\n \nAbout the Speaker:\n \nHarshini Mukundan is currently a program manager and scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a visiting scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She is also an affiliate of the New Mexico Consortium\, Council for Strategic Risks\, and an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico.\n \nMukundan holds a master’s degree in microbiology and a doctorate in biomedical sciences. After a short stint in industry\, she joined Los Alamos in 2006 as a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow\, under the mentorship of Dr. Basil Swanson. Mukundan developed her diagnostics portfolio and capabilities during her time at Los Alamos.\n \nMukundan is the recipient of many honors and accolades\, including the New Mexico Women in Technology Award\, the Los Alamos National Laboratory Fellows prize in research\, two R&D 100 awards and others. She is a passionate mentor and STEM advocate. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, Mukundan was recognized as an AAAS IF/THEN Ambassador in 2019. She was one of 100 women scientists featured in a 3D exhibit at the Smithsonian in 2022.\n \nThis is a FREE event

On Thursday\, Sept. 8\, she will host a book-reading\, titled “From History to the Future\, Mapping Dystopia.” Pérez will read from her historical novel Forgetting the Alamo\, Or\, Blood Memory\, as well as her forthcoming novela Chronicle of a Shifter\, which focuses on a future dystopia in which sex and gender shifters\, along with Brown\, Black\, and Indigenous people\, are held in detention camps because they rebel against the corrupt Global World Order.  \nThen\, head back to the Center on Saturday\, Sept. 10 for a free writing workshop led by Dr. Pérez titled “Emotional Truths: A Queer Chicanx Approach.” In this workshop\, attendees will experiment with scenes that tap into emotional truths to write their stories\, in order to help writers better write and understand characters with different experiences from their own.  \nBoth events are part of the NHCC’s historia\, idioma\, e identidad Series and are sponsored by United Way.  \nWhen: The reading will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, Sept. 8\, and the writing workshop will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday\, Sept. 10. Both events are free\, and attendees can register online through www.nhccnm.org/events.  \nWhere: The reading will be held in NHCC’s Bank of America Theatre\, while the workshop will take place in Salón Ortega. Parking for both events is available on the north side of the Center’s campus\, located at 1701 4th Street SW.  \nWhy: To celebrate and learn from an author who has done so much for the field of queer Chicana feminism.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Governor James Silas Calhoun and Early Territorial Politics in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:James Silas Calhoun\, as New Mexico’s first territorial governor\, played a critical role in New Mexico’s transition from Mexican to American possession. He worked hard to make Hispanic New Mexicans comfortable with their new status as American citizens. Calhoun was also New Mexico’s first Indian Agent\, responsible for all the tribes in a 240\,000-square mile area. Although he wasn’t in office a long time – ill health doomed his term – he had an outsized impact on New Mexico. \nSherry Robinson is a long-time New Mexico journalist and author. Her most recent book (2021) is James Silas Calhoun: First Governor of New Mexico Territory and First lndian Agent. Her book I Fought o Good Fight: A History of the Lipan Apaches won the Historical Society of New Mexico’s Fray Francisco Atanasio Dominguez Award in 2014. \nBook Cover. DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org \n706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n

SUMMARY:Our Lady of the Tortilla comes to the National Hispanic Cultural Center in early September
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC)\, Sandia Performing Arts Company presents Our Lady of the Tortilla\, a play about family love that perseveres even in ridiculous circumstances.  \nWhat: Our Lady of the Tortilla is a play by Luis Santeiro\, directed by Rayrey Griego.  \nThe story focuses on the Cruz family\, which is volatile even in the best of times. On this particular day\, Nelson\, the youngest son\, enters the house in a panic to hide the more obvious religious relics from the sight of his “gringo” girlfriend\, who is visiting for the weekend.   \nNelson’s mother\, Dahlia\, is obsessed with retrieving her husband from his new girlfriend; Eddie\, her elder son\, shows up in a van with his failed life and pregnant girlfriend. But the “real” pandemonium is caused by sweet\, long-suffering Dolores\, Dahlia’s old-maid sister\, when she sees the face of the Holy Virgin in a tortilla.   \nThis miracle brings hordes of believers and reporters to camp out on the Cruz’s lawn to await further miracles. As the family struggles with beliefs and conflicts\, old and new\, the endurance of family love is revealed to be the real miracle.  \nTickets are $22\, with a $2 discount for NHCC Foundation members. For tickets\, visit my.nmculture.org/overview/12959.  \nWho: The National Hispanic Cultural Center and Sandia Performing Arts Company\, a New Mexico-based theatre company that focuses on providing education in the performing arts\, encouraging and promoting the involvement of the community in the performing arts\, and producing quality plays\, musical entertainment\, and dance for audiences in Albuquerque and surrounding areas.  \nWhere: The NHCC’s Wells Fargo Auditorium\, located in the NHCC Performing Arts building on the south end of the NHCC’s campus at 1701 4th St. SW.  \nWhen: There will be eight performances of the play between Thursday\, Sept. 1 and Sunday\, Sept. 11. The play will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays\, and at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays.  \nWhy:  Collaboration is an important part of the NHCC’s work\, and this collaboration between organizations showcases the vibrancy of Central New Mexico’s performing arts scene.

SUMMARY:Take a deeper look at the James Webb Space Telescope
DESCRIPTION:If the photos of far-distant galaxies taken by the James Webb Space Telescope left you wanting more\, head to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) on Saturday\, August 20 for a deeper look at the unique images\, led by experts who assisted with the mission.  \nWhat: The Museum is hosting a special Space Science event on August 20 featuring experts from the University of New Mexico who participated in the mission itself. UNM professors Dr. Diana Dragomir\, who works on the team of astronomers interpreting Webb’s images\, and Prof. Tony Hull\, who supervised the polishing of Webb’s mirrors\, will both be at the Museum to describe how the space observatory functions and explain what we have learned from the information it’s collected so far. The event is included with Museum admission\, making this an extra-special day to visit!  \nWho:  \nDr. Dragomir is Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UNM. Her research focuses on the demographics and atmospheres of exoplanets smaller than Neptune. She studies them with NASA’s TESS\, Spitzer\, Hubble\, and now the Webb space telescopes\, as well as with a variety of ground-based observatories.  \nTony Hull is Adjunct Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UNM. He was previously the Webb telescope’s Program Manager and Director for Optical Fabrication of the entire suite of Webb mirrors.  \nWhen: The main event will be a presentation by Professor Hull at 1:00 p.m.\, where he will share insights into Webb’s mission that you won’t be able to find anywhere else! Other events happening from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. include VR experiences\, table activities\, and videos.  \nWhere:  Professor Hull’s presentation will take place in the Planetarium with a limited number of seats available on a first-come\, first-served basis. A variety of other activities will take place in the Museum’s atrium. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is located at 1701 Mountain Rd. NW in Albuquerque.  \nWhy: The images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope captivated the world when they were released earlier this summer. Now get the inside story on how they came to be\, and what we can learn from them!

SUMMARY:Breakfast with the Curators: Tony Chavarria and Elysia Poon Part of the Breakfast with the Curators collection
DESCRIPTION:Pueblo Indian pottery has long been exhibited and interpreted in the academic and museum worlds through singular\, often generic\, points of view: as ethnographic remnants of the archaeological past or as fine art examples aligned with milestones in Western art history and culture. \nBut the launch of a unique traveling exhibition featuring over 100 historic and contemporary works in clay offers a visionary understanding of Pueblo pots as vessels of community-based knowledge and personal experience. \nOriginating in the cradle of the Indigenous Southwest\, Grounded in Clay: The Spirit of Pueblo Pottery is a rare exhibition curated by the Native American communities it represents. The project gives authority and voice to the Pueblo Pottery Collective\, a group of over 60 individual members of 21 tribal communities who selected and wrote about artistically or culturally distinctive pots from two significant Pueblo pottery collections—the Indian Arts Research Center of the School for Advanced Research (SAR) in Santa Fe and the Vilcek Foundation of New York. The Santa Fe exhibition includes 11 pieces from the Laboratory of Anthropology\, part of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. \nOrganized by SAR and the Vilcek Foundation\, Grounded in Clay debuts July 31\, 2022\, on unceded Tewa Indian lands at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe before traveling nationally in 2023. The exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the creation of SAR’s Indian Arts Research Center’s pottery collection in 1922. \nBreakfast with the Curators is a series of lectures and artists presentations hosted by the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture at Weldon’s Museum Hill Cafe in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. Tickets include a full breakfast and admission to the museum afterwards. Reservations are required. Tickets are $35/person ($30/person for MNMF members). Ticket proceeds directly support the museum’s exhibitions and educational programming funds. \nPlease visit https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/breakfast-with-the-curators-941159 to purchase tickets for this event.
