SUMMARY:Historical Downtown Walking Tours Monday thru Saturday\, July 9 - 14\, 2012
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder why there’s an obelisk in the middle of the Santa Fe Plaza? Have you noticed the gargoyles on top of the Catron Building? Where was the gambling hall? Which tucked-away building held a Manhattan Project secret? Find out by taking a Downtown Walking Tour led by New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors guides. \nThe tours resume on April 16 (through mid October)\, Monday-Saturday\, beginning at 10:15 a.m. Gather at the Palace Courtyard’s Blue Gate just south of the History Museum entrance at 113 Lincoln Ave. Cost is $10. Children 16 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Museum guides do not accept tips. (No tours are offered on the Saturdays when large events are held on the Plaza\, such as Spanish Market and Santa Fe Fiesta.) \nEach tour lasts about 2 hours and features a leisurely pace with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Enjoy stories of the people and events that have made Santa Fe a world-class tourist destination. \nLos Compadres del Palacio\, a support group of the New Mexico History Museum\, operates the program with guides who are trained in Santa Fe history. (Many are also guides at the History Museum and Palace of the Governors.) Proceeds from the tours benefit the museum’s programs and events.Special group tours can be arranged by calling (505) 476-5200. \nThe History Museum’s blog takes you on a virtual version of a tour. SUMMARY:The Art of Gaman Arts & Crafts from the Japanese American Internment Camps\, 1942-1946
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Gaman reflects the strength of Japanese American character in the face of humiliating internment through nearly 100 objects created during World War II. The exhibition opens at the Museum of International Folk Art July 8\, 2012 and runs through October 7\, 2012. \n  \nSoon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941\, 120\,000 ethnic Japanese on the West Coast—more than two-thirds of whom were American citizens by birth—were forced to leave their homes and move to internment camps for the duration of the war. \n  \nIn these bleak camps\, the internees used scraps and other found materials to make utilitarian objects and decorative art to beautify their surroundings. Nothing was viewed as waste—waxy string from onion sacks was unraveled and woven into baskets\, old toothbrush handles were turned into pendants\, gallon-sized glass mayonnaise jars became miniature display cases for fragile pieces of art\, tin cans were converted into toy trains\, produce crates were chopped into blocks and carved into bird pins. And since metal objects for carving\, cutting\, and more could not be brought into camp\, they were fashioned from sharpened butter knives and discarded metal. The internees resourcefulness is further evidenced by their having created sandpaper by gluing crushed glass onto pieces of cardboard. \nThese arts and crafts became essential for simple comforts and emotional survival. These tools\, teapots\, furniture\, toys and games\, pendants and pins\, purses and paintings—are physical manifestations of gaman\, a Japanese word that means to bear the seemingly unbearable with dignity and patience. \nIt is a wonder these objects of beauty survived. Their creators tended not to think of what they produced as “art\,” nor themselves as artists (since few had any formal training other than what they received in the camps from other internees). And many threw away their handicrafts viewing them as nothing more than painful reminders of a time they wished to forget. Objects included in the exhibition represent stories of perseverance\, from the small bird pin that belonged to Hirasuna’s mother that was the starting point for the exhibition. \n“The Art of Gaman\, highlighting art created by Japanese internees during World War II\, will take place in the museum’s Gallery of Conscience\, where such issues as war\, ecological and political disruptions\, and various economic and social concerns impact the creative spirit and the traditional arts are examined\,” said Marsha Bol\, museum director. \n“This exhibition provides an amazing opportunity to put a human face on the internees who were literally reduced to a serial number while held behind barbed wire fences during World War II\,” said Hirasuna. “The objects they made in camp represent a triumph of the human spirit over adversity. We can’t help looking at these beautiful things and thinking of the individuals who made them.” \nMost of the objects in the exhibition are on loan from former internees or their families. Historical context is provided through archival photographs\, artifacts\, and documentary films. The exhibition is organized by San Francisco-based author and curator Delphine Hirasuna with advisory support from the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, and is based on her 2005 book;  The Art of Gaman\, published by Ten Speed Press.   \nThe Art of Gaman opens at the Museum of International Folk Art on Sunday July 8\, 2012 with a lecture by Delphine Hirasuna at 1PM. The exhibition closes October 7\, 2012. \n

SUMMARY:Let’s Take A Look Curators Look at Your Treasures
DESCRIPTION:The third Wednesday of each month from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. \n During this time\, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology are in the lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. These curators will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes\, the discussion among the curators may become as much or more informative than the identification of the artifact. \nThe event is always FREE and open to the public.  Federal and State regulations prohibit the curators from appraising any artifact. Determining the Value of a Work of Art: The museum neither appraises or authenticates works of art. For information about art appraisals visit the web sites for American Society of Appraisers\, or Art Dealers Association of America.

SUMMARY:A Summer of Baskets: Basketry of the Americas Panel Presentation and Demonstrations
DESCRIPTION:Public Panel Presentation and Demonstrations \nIndian basket expert Terry DeWald will lead a discussion among international master basket weavers from Arizona\, North West Coast\, Panama and South Africa. In conjunction with Woven Identities and the International Folk Art Market. At the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture.        \nA cross-cultural basket-weaving demonstration and dialogue with Basketry Artists. \n Terrol Dew Johnson\, Tohono O'odham basketmaker and community activist.  Terrol has won top awards for his beargrass\, yucca\,devil's claw and gourd baskets at Santa Fe Indian Market\, The Heard Museum Indian Market and Southwest Museum's Indian Art Fair.  Terrol is also an advocate for traditional dessert foods to preserve health and sustainability and won the Ford Foundation's Leadership for a Changing World Award in 2002. \n Loa Ryan is a member of the Tisimshian tribe and a master basket weaver. Ryan resumed the family basket weaving tradition that was last practiced by two of her great-grandmothers\, who inspired Loa with their use of baskets to collect salmon and wild berries. Ryan learned her techniques from a Haida woman\, Delores Churchill\, who\, fearing the tradition would be lost\, took up Tsimshian basketry. She works\, through teaching basket making\, to revive interest within the urban Tsimshian community of their culture and heritage. Loa has been awarded many Folk Arts Grants  and Loa has earned top awards for her Tsimshian baskets. She was awarded “Outstanding Tsimshian” award\, presented to her by the Tsimshian tribe in Vancouver\, BC on September 5\, 2000. Her baskets can be found at the NMAI\, Smithsonian\, Burke Museum\, and Anchorage Indian Heritage Center and many private collections. \nFolk Art Maket artist Idaira Cabezón Mepaquito\, and translator Anadelina Barrigón\, will represent the indigenous Wounaan Culture of Panama.   Wounaan rainforest baskets are painstakingly made of chunga palm fiber that is collected\, bundled and braided\, bleached and boiled in natural dyebaths or submerged in river mud\, before being stitched and coiled into baskets infused with geometric or floral and faunal designs. The Wounaan people have been fighting to gain ownership of their ancestral lands even as their traditional natural resources are endangered by outside development.  While Wounaan baskets are renowned worldwide for their quality and beauty\, they are still under-appreciated in Panama. \n \nTerry Dewald\, an expert on Native American art from Tucson\, Arizona\, will moderate the event. Entrance is by museum admission. \n
