DESCRIPTION:Presented by Diana Sherman Get a behind-the-scenes look at the hundreds of Chacoan\, Mimbres\, Hopi\, and Rio Grande vessels in the Southwestern pottery collection of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture / Center for New Mexico Archaeology. Sherman will connect these vessels — dating from 600 AD to 1500 AD — with themes presented in Painted Reflections\, and will expand the conversation to include other design elements\, including the use of spirals\, birds\, stars\, lightning\, and water. \nThis lecture series is generously funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

(505) 476-1200. \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice.

He will be here today with a small group to play/sing and discuss what is the yoik in Sami culture\, and how has it developed- from a North American diaspora experience. On one of a number of original music websites\, Soundclick\, he has over 85\,000 song listens. \nMuus is one of original founders of the Sami Cultural Center of North America located in Duluth Minnesota.

SUMMARY:Frontiers in Science: A Universal Method for Detecting Disease  With Harshini Mukundan
DESCRIPTION:Frontiers in Science presents Harshini Mukundan and a look at how our own immune system inspired a new\, universal approach to diagnosing emerging infectious diseases. Join us for this free public talk on Friday\, September 16\, in Santa Fe at the St. Francis Auditorium.\n \nEmerging infectious diseases are a major concern to national health security\, as exemplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to prepare against unknown threats\, we need an arsenal of tools — diagnostics\, therapeutics\, vaccines — that can be used broadly against a variety of pathogens.\n \nOur own innate immune system can recognize the entire gamut of pathogens that inhabit the Earth — whether it has seen them before or not! Inspired by this complex and beautiful pattern recognition system\, Mukundan and her colleagues at Los Alamos National Laboratory have developed a universal diagnostic approach. Mukundan will discuss this approach and other new tools in the fight against pathogens. This series is a public service of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Fellows.\n \nAbout the Speaker:\n \nHarshini Mukundan is currently a program manager and scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a visiting scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She is also an affiliate of the New Mexico Consortium\, Council for Strategic Risks\, and an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico.\n \nMukundan holds a master’s degree in microbiology and a doctorate in biomedical sciences. After a short stint in industry\, she joined Los Alamos in 2006 as a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow\, under the mentorship of Dr. Basil Swanson. Mukundan developed her diagnostics portfolio and capabilities during her time at Los Alamos.\n \nMukundan is the recipient of many honors and accolades\, including the New Mexico Women in Technology Award\, the Los Alamos National Laboratory Fellows prize in research\, two R&D 100 awards and others. She is a passionate mentor and STEM advocate. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, Mukundan was recognized as an AAAS IF/THEN Ambassador in 2019. She was one of 100 women scientists featured in a 3D exhibit at the Smithsonian in 2022.\n \nThis is a FREE event

She previously curated the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture exhibitions Huichol Art and Culture: Balancing the World and Secrets of Casas Grandes: Precolumbian Art and Archaeology of Northern Mexico. \nNew Curator of Individually Catalogued Collections\, Patrick Cruz (Ohkay Owingeh) \nIn addition to working with MIAC\, Patrick Cruz\, a member of Ohkay Owingeh\, is currently pursuing a PhD in Anthropology with an Archaeology focus at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His research interests have been focused on Southwest archaeology\, and more specifically\, the PIII Great Pueblo Migration out of the Four Corners\, the post Great Pueblo Migration period in the Northern Rio Grande\, identity\, Tewa language\, village and community formation\, indigenous archaeology\, and phenomenology. His recent graduate work was conducted on the Cuyamungue site at Pojoaque Pueblo\, and his current dissertation research focuses on a site near Ohkay Owingeh called Phiogeh. Previously\, he has 20 years of experience both working in the archaeology and museum fields such as at Bandelier National Monument\, the New Mexico History Museum\, and the Center of Southwest Studies\, Fort Lewis College. \n

SUMMARY:National Hispanic Cultural Center welcomes acclaimed Chicana writer Dr. Emma Pérez for two days of literature and learning
DESCRIPTION:The National Hispanic Cultural Center is thrilled to host one of the leading authors of queer Chicana feminist literature for a special two-day event in early September in partnership with the University of New Mexico’s department of Spanish and Portuguese.  \nWho: Dr. Emma Pérez is an author and professor at the University of Arizona. Dr. Pérez has published fiction\, essays\, and the history monograph\, The Decolonial Imaginary: Writing Chicanas into History (1999).   \nPérez’s first novel\, Gulf Dreams\, was published in 1996 and is considered one of the first Chicanx queer/lesbian novels in print. Her second novel\, Forgetting the Alamo\, Or\, Blood Memory (2009) earned awards including the Isherwood Writing Grant (2009). Her novel\, Electra’s Complex (2015)\, is a mystery set in a college with a history professor as protagonist.   \nWhat: Dr. Pérez will come to the center for two days of education and Chicana literature. On Thursday\, Sept. 8\, she will host a book-reading\, titled “From History to the Future\, Mapping Dystopia.” Pérez will read from her historical novel Forgetting the Alamo\, Or\, Blood Memory\, as well as her forthcoming novela Chronicle of a Shifter\, which focuses on a future dystopia in which sex and gender shifters\, along with Brown\, Black\, and Indigenous people\, are held in detention camps because they rebel against the corrupt Global World Order.  \nThen\, head back to the Center on Saturday\, Sept. 10 for a free writing workshop led by Dr. Pérez titled “Emotional Truths: A Queer Chicanx Approach.” In this workshop\, attendees will experiment with scenes that tap into emotional truths to write their stories\, in order to help writers better write and understand characters with different experiences from their own.  \nBoth events are part of the NHCC’s historia\, idioma\, e identidad Series and are sponsored by United Way.  \nWhen: The reading will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, Sept. 8\, and the writing workshop will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday\, Sept. 10. Both events are free\, and attendees can register online through www.nhccnm.org/events.  \nWhere: The reading will be held in NHCC’s Bank of America Theatre\, while the workshop will take place in Salón Ortega. SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Governor James Silas Calhoun and Early Territorial Politics in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:James Silas Calhoun\, as New Mexico’s first territorial governor\, played a critical role in New Mexico’s transition from Mexican to American possession. He worked hard to make Hispanic New Mexicans comfortable with their new status as American citizens. Calhoun was also New Mexico’s first Indian Agent\, responsible for all the tribes in a 240\,000-square mile area. Although he wasn’t in office a long time – ill health doomed his term – he had an outsized impact on New Mexico. \nSherry Robinson is a long-time New Mexico journalist and author. Her most recent book (2021) is James Silas Calhoun: First Governor of New Mexico Territory and First lndian Agent. DESCRIPTION:Camille Bernal (Taos) is a Pueblo potter and experimenter–always exploring new forms\, style\, and techniques to create pottery that is uniquely hers. Camille draws inspiration from the spectacular scenery that surrounds her childhood home located on the Taos Pueblo reservation where she lives and works.\n \nEhren Kee Natay (Kewa/Santo Domingo Pueblo\, Diné/Navajo) is a multidisciplinary artist residing in his hometown of Santa Fe. His principal creative medium is music\, and he has been playing percussion since the age of ten. At age twenty-five\, he began taking classes in polychrome pottery under the guidance of teacher Shawn Tafoya at the Poeh Cultural Center\, Pueblo of Pojoaque. His latest work combines media to create multisensory art experiences.\n \nMartha Romero (Nambé) is a teacher\, micaceous clay artist\, and community sharer. Martha’s pottery journey was greatly influenced by her mother\, Rose Alice Baca. She has studied under such instructors as Clarence Cruz\, Pamela Lujan-Hauer\, and Michael Bancroft\, and her work has been shown in various markets\, exhibitions\, and galleries.\n \n \n \nThese programs are made possible through generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts.\n \n

SUMMARY:Dawn ’til Dusk Day
DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way.
