DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder why there’s an obelisk in the middle of the Santa Fe Plaza? Have you noticed the gargoyles on top of the Catron Building? Where was the gambling hall? Which tucked-away building held a Manhattan Project secret? \nFind out by taking a Downtown Walking Tour led by New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors guides. The tours resume on April 14(through Oct. 11)\, Monday-Saturday\, beginning at 10:15 a.m. Gather at the Palace Courtyard’s Blue Gate just south of the History Museum entrance at 113 Lincoln Ave. Cost is $10. Children 16 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Museum guides do not accept tips. (No tours are offered on the Saturdays when large events are held on the Plaza\, such as Spanish Market and Santa Fe Fiesta.) \nEach tour lasts about 2 hours and features a leisurely pace with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Enjoy stories of the people and events that have made Santa Fe a world-class tourist destination. Los Compadres del Palacio\, a support group of the New Mexico History Museum\, operates the program with guides who are trained in Santa Fe history. (Many are also guides at the History Museum and Palace of the Governors.) SUMMARY:Wooden Menagerie: Made in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:During the Work Progress Administration (WPA) period of the 1930’s\, the traditional arts of the region gained resurgence through federal programmed that trained and employed New Mexican folk artists\, In 1936\, Patrocino Barela’s expressionistic woodcarvings created under the auspices of the Federal Arts Project were a part of New Horizons in American Art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The wood carving tradition continued into the 1960’s primarily for the tourist trade with classic carvings of burros and oxen drawn carts. During this time artists started experimenting with recycled materials and common household paint. The decade of the 1970’s was a dramatic period that fostered the powerful animistic forms of Felipe Archuleta and his workshop of carvers. By the 1980’s Archuleta’s animal sculptures were highly sought after by collectors and curators. His menagerie of domestic and exotic animals made their way to museum exhibits in New York\, Paris and Tokyo. This exhibition celebrated the rich Hispano folk tradition of animal wood carving in New Mexico and the continued influence on the national and international scene. The exhibition highlighted the historic roots of New Mexican woodcarvers\, offering early twentieth century examples of whimsical animals including works by Jose Dolores Lopez and Celso Gallegos. The excitement around the workshops of the New Mexican animal carvers created an insatiable market that spurred on innovations by Alonso Jimenez\, Jim Davila\, David Alvarez and Leroy Ortega. This generation of carvers fostered the iconic images of friendly burros\, howling coyotes\, and Technicolor rattlesnakes\, reaching deep into the popular culture of the Southwestern United States. These animal sculptures have become emblematic of Santa Fe’s cultural character. DESCRIPTION:At 1 p.m. Masaaki Modegi\, President of The Tokyo Kite Museum will give a public lecture on Japanese kites in conjunction with Tako Kichi: Kite Crazy in Japan. \n The lecture will be followed by a drop-in\, hands-on kite-making workshop for ages 3–103. If the weather permits\, kite flying will also take place on Milner Plaza. This program is by Museum Admission; New Mexico residents free on Sundays! DESCRIPTION:Our Story teller is children’s book author and Storyteller Emmett “Shkeme” Garcia. He is from the Pueblos of Tamaya (Santa Ana) and Walatowa (Jemez) in New Mexico. His diverse talents include Traditional Pueblo Singer and Dancer\, lead singer of the award-winning Native American Reggae Band ’Native Roots’ and Cultural Educator. In 2006 the University of New Mexico Press published Shkeme’s first children’s book “Coyote and the Sky.” His second book\, “Sister Rabbit’s Tricks\,” was released December 20\, 2012. Currently Shkeme is working on his 4th Native Roots CD.

DESCRIPTION:Commemorate this last day to see Cowboys Real and Imagined with a presentation by Baldwin G. Burr\, historian\, author\, and photo archivist at the Los Lunas Museum of Heritage and Arts. Using clips from decades’ worth of Billy movies\, Burr shows how social and cultural trends influenced the various portrayals of New Mexico’s most famous outlaw. \nFree with admission; Sundays free to NM residents. This event is generously supported by the New Mexico Humanities Council. \nHow was a relatively minor participant in the Lincoln County War transformed into the legendary outlaw? When he arrived in Lincoln County in 1877\, William Bonney was just 17 years old. Four years later\, he was killed at Fort Sumner by Sheriff Pat Garrett. Almost immediately\, his legend began to grow\, and the silver screen wasn’t far behind. The power of the legend of Billy the Kid was influenced by the social and cultural trends present at the time the various movies were made\, far more than by any historic facts of the young man’s life. Burr’s presentation draws from some of the more than 60 motion pictures made with Billy as the main character. \nBurr is the author of Images of America: Los Lunas\, and Images of America: Belen\, published by Arcadia Publishing\, and Southwest by Midwest\, a catalog of an exhibition of his photographs at the Los Lunas Museum of Heritage and Arts. He is a member of the Historical Society of New Mexico\, the Central New Mexico Corral of Westerners International\, the Valencia County Historical Society\, the Madison County (Ohio) Historical Society\, and the Los Alamos Historical Society. He currently serves as the president of the Valencia County Historical Society and is the secretary of the Historical Society of New Mexico. He also is the Sheriff (President) of the Central New Mexico Corral of Westerners International. \nCowboys Real and Imagined includes a digital image of the famous Billy the Kid tintype that was purchased at a 2011 auction by William Koch. The exhibit explores New Mexico’s cowboy legacy from its origin in the Spanish vaquero tradition through itinerant hired hands\, outlaws\, rodeo stars\, cowboy singers\, Tom Mix movies and more\, grounding the story in New Mexico through rare photographs\, cowboy gear\, movies and art.

DESCRIPTION:Work in Progress: Folk Artists on Immigration –– Visitors to the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) had a unique opportunity to actively participate in developing the new exhibit on the timely topic of immigration.  Work in Progress: Folk Artists on Immigration\, a participatory exhibit lab explored issues of home\, immigration and belonging\, in the Museum’s Mark Naylor & Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience.  The Gallery of Conscience is located in the West Gallery of the Bartlett Wing; opening in 2010 with Empowering Women: Artisan Cooperatives that Transform Communities\, this space continues to engage visitors with meaningful interactive activities. \nThe public was invited to participate in facilitated dialogues\, giving feedback and leaving their thoughts and stories in order to help shape the content and form of the exhibition. The Work in Progress space displayed handmade embroidery\, carving\, paintings\, drawings\, and beadwork about immigrant journeys made by artists from the Americas\, Africa and Asia. Gallery activites included tracing your route\, a world map illustrating our connections with string; along with writing and drawing activities amidst the art works by contemporary folk artists. \nThis exhibit lab was made possible through the support of Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn\, the International Folk Art Alliance\, the International Folk Art Foundation\, the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s Exhibition Development Fund\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences. Our dialogue series is part of the National Dialogues on Immigration Project of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Saddle up for the last two weekends of the History Museum’s popular exhibit\, Cowboys Real and Imagined\, closing March 16. Besides learning about more about 400 years of cowboying in the Land of Enchantment\, you can enjoy free\, family-friendly activities. The schedule: \nCowboy Hoedown\, Sunday\, March 9\, 1–4 pm \nDance to the western music of the Holy Water and Whiskey in the lobby from 2–4 pm. Bonus: Free dance lessons by folks in threads inspired by 19th-century cowboys. From 1–4 pm\, bring the kids to the classroom to craft a take-home collage of cowboy lingo and words of wisdom. Head upstairs for hat-fitting demonstrations by J.D. Noble of the Hatsmith of Santa Fe\, and more. (Can you lasso the dummy calf?) \nFree with museum admission; Sundays free to NM residents. \nHoly Water and Whiskey is an Albuquerque trio performing traditional cowboy\, bluegrass and miscellaneous whiskey tunes. Maggie Washburne plays bass\, Scott Altenbach\, guitar\, and Bruce Washburne\, guitar and banjo. The group has performed at the Albuquerque Folk Festival and as the opening act for Michael Martin Murphey and Arlo Guthrie. Their CDs include Better Late than Never\, Spirits of All Kinds\, and Miners\, Outlaws\, and Other Relatives\, which won two 2011 awards from the New Mexico Music Association. \n“Billy the Kid in the Movies\,” Sunday\, March 16\, 2 pm \nHow was a relatively minor participant in the Lincoln County War transformed into the legendary outlaw? Just 17 when he arrived in Lincoln County in 1877\, William Bonney was dead four years later\, killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett. Almost immediately\, his legend grew\, helped in part by the silver screen. Commemorate this last day to see Cowboys Real and Imagined with a presentation in the museum auditorium by Baldwin G. Burr\, historian\, author\, and photo archivist at the Los Lunas Museum of Heritage and Arts. Using clips from decades’ worth of Billy movies\, Burr shows how social and cultural trends influenced the various portrayals of New Mexico’s most famous outlaw. \nFree with admission; Sundays free to NM residents. \nBurr is the author of Images of America: Los Lunas\, and Images of America: Belen\, published by Arcadia Publishing\, and Southwest by Midwest\, a catalog of an exhibition of his photographs at the Los Lunas Museum of Heritage and Arts. He is a member of the Historical Society of New Mexico\, the Central New Mexico Corral of Westerners International\, the Valencia County Historical Society\, the Madison County (Ohio) Historical Society\, and the Los Alamos Historical Society. He currently serves as the president of the Valencia County Historical Society and is the secretary of the Historical Society of New Mexico. He also is the Sheriff (President) of the Central New Mexico Corral of Westerners International. His presentation is generously supported by the New Mexico Humanities Council. \nCowboys Real and Imagined includes a digital image of the famous Billy the Kid tintype that was purchased at a 2011 auction by William Koch. The exhibit explores New Mexico’s cowboy legacy from its origin in the Spanish vaquero tradition through itinerant hired hands\, outlaws\, rodeo stars\, cowboy singers\, Tom Mix movies and more\, grounding the story in New Mexico through rare photographs\, cowboy gear\, movies and art. \n

DESCRIPTION:Louie Garcia Tiwa/Piro Pueblo was taught weaving by his grandfather at a very early age. He has always been fasinated by the simplicity embodied in the many textiles that make up traditional Pueblo clothing. He will be  weaving a traditional Pueblo sash.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception Focus on Photography
DESCRIPTION:Focus on Photography is a year-long cycle of photography exhibitions\, celebrating the museum’s rich collection of photographs and the key role the medium has played in shaping New Mexico culture.  The project continues through March\, 2015. We open with three concurrent shows – \nBeneath our Feet: Photographs by Joan Myers \nNew Mexico photographer Joan Myers has been making pictures for nearly forty years\, using her camera to explore relationships between people and the land. The exhibition of more than 35 photographs cuts across several bodies of her work and offers a sampling of the artist’s images from Antarctica to volcanos.    \nGrounded \nComplementing the exhibition of photographs by Joan Myers\, this selection of landscape photographs is drawn primarily from the museum’s collection and examines\, literally\, the ground beneath our feet. \nPhoto Lab \nWelcome to the lab\, where ideas develop! This lab explores the processes of color and platinum-palladium prints using the museum’s collection. Reading materials include books by Joan Myers\, how-to handbooks\, and other material to pique your interest.  Also check out the news board for an ever-changing selection of questions about photography that we invite YOU to answer!
