SUMMARY:Light Among the Ruins
DESCRIPTION:Light Among the Ruins returns to Jemez Historic Site\, now for two nights\, Dec. 9th and 10th! The ruins of Giusewa Pueblo and San José de los Jemez Mission will be decorated with hundreds of farolitos. Each evening’s program will include traditional Native American flute music and Pueblo dancers performing between two illuminating bonfires. The Historic Site will also host an arts and crafts fair and have food available for purchase. Flash photography\, drones\, firearms\, and alcohol are prohibited. \nShuttles from parking stations throughout Jemez Springs will be provided. Those planning on walking to and from the event are encouraged to bring a flashlight and wear reflective clothing. Please dress accordingly for this outdoor event.  \nAdmission is $20 for adults and $10 for children and tickets are available in timed blocks. Visitors can be purchase for December 9th here and December 10th here. Get your tickets early to ensure you can get your preferred entrance time. We look forward to welcoming you back to this special evening. This is a rain or shine event.

The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. Baila!’s annual holiday extravaganza. This performance features music\, song\, and dance with the traditional Southwestern flair that has been cultivated in our state for generations\, along with unique segments saluting Christmas traditions from around the world. With music\, dance\, and New Mexican spirit\, this performance will surely delight theatre-goers of all ages.   \nChristmas in New Mexico features a large\, multigenerational cast including dancers as young as six\, as well as Baila! Baila!’s professional company dancers. SUMMARY:Dawn ’til Dusk Day
DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. Please ask the front desk about special educational programs.* \nThe Dawn ‘til Dusk Days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting\, sketching\, and landscape photography. SUMMARY:Winter Letters From the Reservation
DESCRIPTION:Fort Sumner Historic Site Staff\, are pleased to announce that this December\, the in-person Winter Letters from the Reservation is returning to Bosque Redondo Memorial.  Letters from the Reservation is a live event at the Memorial that happens three times a year.  Through this program\, the history of the fort and reservation unfolds by way of storytelling using archival military correspondence and oral stories.  Staff are currently recruiting volunteers to read letters or oral histories (in-person) during the event.  If you wish to volunteer to read a letter\, you can click on this LINK or call the Memorial directly at 575-355-2873.  There is a limited amount of stories to tell\, so sign up quickly. \nThe evening will begin with a traditional New Mexico dinner of pork posolé\, tortillas\, tortilla chips\, salsa\, and a winter cake served with coffee or hot chocolate from the hot chocolate bar.  Dinner will be followed by a journey into the Memorial’s storyteller’s room where volunteers and staff will tell the story of life on the reservation through archival letters and oral histories from the months of November\, December\, January\, and February (1863-1867).  There is no admission fee for this event and the food is free.  Please join us and listen to history unfold.

SUMMARY:Woven: Traditional Swedish Hair Jewelry
DESCRIPTION:As a child\, Karen was interested in her mother’s hair brooch from Våmhus\, Sweden. Years later\, with many needlework projects under her belt\, Karen read about the tradition of Swedish women entrepreneurs in the 1800s who traveled from their homes in Sweden to major European urban areas to make hair jewelry for others. At the time\, Karen was unaware of where this growing curiosity in hairwork would lead. Then\, in 2018\, supported by a Reviving Folk Arts in the Midwest Fellowship through the American Scandinavian Foundation\, Karen traveled to Våmhus\, home of her ancestors. There she learned how to make table-made hair jewelry from Joanna Svensson\, a master hairworker. In October 2019\, the Nordic Center in Duluth\, MN featured a hair jewelry exhibition curated by Karen. She began teaching hair jewelry making\, first at the Nordic Center and then at North House Folk School in Grand Marais\, MN. Karen continues to offer classes a North House Folk School and is working with curators at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis\, MN\, in preparation for teaching a bracelet course there in January 2023. Stilll fascinated with traditional and contemporary hairwork\, Karen appreciates her husband’s support by making hairwork tables and weights and is eager to share what she knows with others.

DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. Please ask the front desk about special educational programs.* \nThe Dawn ‘til Dusk Days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting\, sketching\, and landscape photography. SUMMARY:Photo-Historian Anne Wilkes Tucker Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Eminent photo-historian Anne Wilkes Tucker\, curator emerita of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, will give a lecture on Friday\, Nov. 4\, at 5:30 p.m.\, in the St. Francis Auditorium. Speaking in conjunction with the exhibition Transgressions and Amplifications: Mixed-media Photography of the 1960s and 1970s\, Tucker will address the challenges of being female in the art world in the 1970s and discuss various image series and limited-edition books of artists Joan Lyons\, Bea Nettles\, and Marcia Resnick. Each woman used their own lives to tell very different stories of home turf\, dreams\, memories and urban fiction.   \nThe lecture\, “Not Women Artists\, Artists\,” also anticipates the fiftieth anniversary of Tucker’s groundbreaking 1973 publication The Woman’s Eye\, a study of 100 photographs created by ten twentieth century women photographers. The book’s texts provide biographical information while raising questions including whether it is possible to locate gender in the authorship of a photograph and how the artists addressed prevailing challenges to establish their right to artistic ambition and careers. “It’s an interesting moment to revisit the book\,” Tucker said. “Women are now well represented in the field as artists\, curators\, and historians\, but history has shown that inclusiveness and parity are not guaranteed.” \nThe Woman’s Eye was Tucker’s first book\, published the year after she completed her master’s degree in fine arts\, having studied photographic history with Nathan Lyons and Beaumont Newhall. She was then a curatorial intern at the Museum of Modern Art working with John Szarkowski and began to teach photographic history at the New School for Social Research\, Cooper Union\, and the Philadelphia College of Art. In 1976\, Tucker was recruited by the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, where she went on to establish its photography department and create a world-class collection of more than 30\,000 photographs. Among her awards and fellowships was a Guggenheim Fellowship granted in 1983. \nDuring her significant career at the museum\, Tucker organized more than forty exhibitions\, published two dozen books\, and traveled widely to research and define the scope of this global medium. Often working in collaboration with other curators\, her exhibitions and publications cover broad topics such as contemporary photography in the United States\, Korea\, and Argentina as well as large compendiums on the history of Japanese photography and a global study of photographs of war and its aftermath. Her monographic surveys include work by photographers Brassaï\, Mark Klett\, Robert Frank\, Ray K. Metzker\,  Richard Misrach\, Milagros de la Torre and Catherine Wagner. She retired from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston in 2015 and continues to be a defining voice in the field. \nTransgressions and Amplifications will be on view through January 7\, 2024. \nThis is a FREE event. \nSt. Francis Auditorium is equipped with audio induction loop assistive listening technology. \n  \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Examines the Complex History of WWII Japanese American Incarceration Camps \nThe New Mexico History Museum announces the opening of the Smithsonian traveling exhibition “Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II”. The exhibition examines the complicated history and impact of Executive Order 9066 that led to the incarceration of Japanese Americans following the attack on Pearl Harbor. \nEmbracing themes that are as relevant today as they were 75 years ago\, “Righting a Wrong” looks at immigration\, prejudice\, civil rights\, heroism\, and what it means to be an American. The exhibition explores the complex history through historical images\, personal stories\, and objects from those incarcerated at the camps. A duffle bag used by the Imada family when they were relocated to the Gila River camp in Arizona reflects the restrictions to bring only what they could carry. Takeo Shirasawa’s 1943 high school diploma from the Poston camp in Arizona exemplifies the experience of thousands of other teens who had to complete their high school education in camps. \nFollowing the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan on Dec. 7\, 1941\, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which sent 75\,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry and 45\,000 Japanese nationals to incarceration camps. Ten large\, barbed wire-enclosed incarceration camps and dozens of other installations were scattered west of the Mississippi\, far from their homes from March 1942 to March 1946. Young and old lived crowded together in the hastily built camps\, endured poor living conditions\, and were under the constant watch of military guards for two and a half years. Meanwhile\, brave Japanese American men risked their lives fighting for the United States. \nSome 40 years later\, members of the Japanese American community led the nation to confront the wrong it had done. The U.S. Congress formally recognized that the rights of the Japanese American community had been violated and President Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act of 1988\, providing an apology and restitution to the living Japanese Americans who were incarcerated during World War II. \n “Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II” was developed by the National Museum of American History and adapted for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The national tour received Federal support from the Asian Pacific American Initiatives Pool\, administered by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center\, the Terasaki Family Foundation\, and C. L. Ehn & Ginger Lew. \nThe exhibition is based on the exhibit of the same name on view Feb. 17\, 2017 through March 6\, 2019 at the National Museum of American History in Washington\, DC. \nSITES has been sharing the wealth of Smithsonian collections and research programs with millions of people outside Washington\, D.C.\, for more than 70 years.
