SUMMARY:Gustave Baumann and Friends: Artist Cards from Holidays Past
DESCRIPTION:Gustave Baumann is one of the most recognized and beloved names associated with the Santa Fe art world in the 20th century. For more than five decades\, beginning in 1918\, the internationally renowned printmaker cultivated friendships with other artists that were full of colorful\, artistic\, humorous and small-town flavor—all of it brought to life in holiday greeting cards they made for one another. With guileless good humor and steady craft\, the cards captured the personal lives and preoccupations that encapsulate the memories and spirit of their times. \nIn Gustave Baumann and Friends: Artist Cards from Holidays Past\, opening November 7\, Tom Leech\, director of the Palace Press\, and guest curator Jean Moss pull from a cache of more than 400 cards donated to the New Mexico History Museum in 2012 by the Ann Baumann Trust. Buttressing the collection are loans from private collectors and the New Mexico Museum of Art. Besides “Gus” Baumann\, the exhibit features examples by such New Mexico favorites as Paul Horgan; Olive Rush; Willard Clark; Barbara Latham; Joseph Imhof; Louis Ewing; Will Shuster; Chuzo Tamotzu; B.J.O. Nordfeldt; Ernest and Helen Blumenschein; John Sloan; and Tom Lea. The cards are held at the museum’s Fray Angélico Chávez History Library. \nThe Museum of New Mexico Press is publishing a companion book on Oct. 15. Leech will produce a limited-edition Palace Press version of it\, using Baumann’s original blocks and paper found in the artist’s Santa Fe studio after his death in 1971. \nIs that intimidating? A little\, Leech acknowledged\, “but then I just ask myself\, `What would Gus do?’” \nMixing Santa Claus with Deer Dancers\, vaqueros and even diapers\, the cards sit somewhere between idle doodle and polished artwork—and might just inspire you to create a card of your own. (We’ll have some workshops to help you scratch that itch.) Staged in the museum’s Mezzanine Gallery\, the exhibit (through March 1\, 2015) includes a rare audio recording of Ann Baumann talking about Christmases past. \nDuring his tenure at the Palace Press\, Leech has nurtured a longtime admiration of his fellow printer. He even oversaw the re-creation of Baumann’s studio within the museum\, complete with his original tools\, press and inks. (See a photo of it by clicking here.) \n“My first reaction when I saw the cards? Just delight\,” he said. “They gave a glimpse into the personal lives and humor and insights of all these different artists. You might know an artist from their paintings\, but here they’re just goofing around. All of these artists knew one another; they knew what they were capable of. No one felt they had to show off. There are some really technically beautiful pieces\, but most are people saying `I want to send a Christmas card\, but I don’t want to buy one so I’ll whip one out.’ They’re kind of homey\, simple\, and direct.” \nAnd like anyone else\, they want to show off their family at Christmastime. But instead of a family photo\, artists like Baumann and Willard Clark took drawings their children did and turned them into linoleum-block prints. Sometimes\, the artists took traditional symbols of Christmas or the New Year and put their own spin on them. Sometimes the inspiration came from “far out” in the artist’s mind\, or were influenced by global events\, community spirit or the beauty of the New Mexico landscape. \nBaumann’s output includes a card a year from 1919 to 1970\, giving him ample opportunity to comment on Prohibition\, the Great Depression\, World War II and the dawn of the Space Age with a brand of humor that Leech described as “sometimes unfathomable.” \nThe exhibit includes about 100 cards\, but in the pantheon of great Santa Fe artists\, a few are notably absent. “Most of the participants were either printmakers or had printmaking in their background\,” Leech said. Perhaps because of that\, you won’t find a Raymond Jonson\, the Modernist painter who once lived next-door to Baumann\, or a Georgia O’Keeffe. \nFor Leech\, that’s OK. “I feel like people come to New Mexico for Georgia O’Keeffe\,” he said\, “but they stay for Gustave Baumann.”

SUMMARY:Tattoo Nation A Painting the Divine event
DESCRIPTION:See portions of the 2013 documentary Tattoo Nation and hear from Director Eric Schwartz in the History Museum auditorium. The event is free with admission; Sundays are free to NM residents. Children 16 and under free daily. \nTattoo images of saints and specifically images of the Virgin Mary are popular in Latino and contemporary culture\, among men and women. Many early tattoo designs were copies of icons and paintings widely found in churches. Today\, Virgin Mary tattoos come in a wide array of styles and designs\, all of which are notable for their beautiful color composition\, artistic quality\, and dramatic effect. This documentary explores how sacred images have permeated the world of tattoos and what they mean and symbolize to the people who bare them. For more on the film\, log onto http://www.tattoonation.com/. See a trail of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7VAmi8xWCU&feature=youtu.be. \nDownload stills from the movie by clicking here\, as well as here. A portrait of Eric Schwartz is available by clicking here. \nSchwartz will discuss how he was gradually allowed into the inner circle of Chicano artists where he learned about the prison practice of tattooing images of the Virgin Mary for divine protection\, to pay respect\, or to seek penance. Music will be provided by Kenny Passarelli\, who will present a piece inspired by Our Lady of Guadalupe and Santa Fe’s Santuario de Guadalupe. \nA sculptor and photographer\, Schwartz began making the motion picture after becoming fascinated by the growing tattoo phenomenon. “The stories people told me about their tattoos during photo sessions were intriguing and as I began compiling them it grew into an entire film about the artists and the people who are their living canvasses.” \nTattoo Nation is emerging as the definitive look at how “ink” went from underground and illegal just a few years ago to mass acceptance and the status of art. The film has garnered rave reviews when screened at film festivals around the country and director Schwartz has appeared with the film at sold-out events on college campuses. \n

Using the same materials as their ancestors did thousands of years ago\, the works presented draw on cultural influences of those who have gone before

Honored with the 2013 Rosalinde Gilbert Innovations in Alzheimer ’s Disease Caregiving Legacy Award\, the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project forms the backbone of Glazner’s new book\, Dementia Arts: Celebrating Creativity in Elder Care (Health Professional Press). \nJane Tygesson of Discover Your Story\, a program at the Minneapolis Institute of Art\, teaches ways to give vibrant museum tours to people living with memory loss. Tygesson wrote the manual Opening Doors to Memory & Imagination to help museums create programs that engage the senses and spark conversation among people with memory loss. Since 2008\, Discover Your Story has brought more than 3\,000 adults with memory loss into the museum. \nAlysha Shaw\, program coordinator of the Santa Fe-based Lifesongs\, shows how the project helps people in nursing homes and hospice create original and enlightening music. Shaw is an interdisciplinary artist\, musician and community organizer who has studied and worked with performance\, music\, video\, interactive arts\, sculpture and writing. Lifesongs is a program of the Academy for the Love of Learning and Littleglobe. \nRuth Dennis\, social services director of Vista Living\, and Jytte Lokvig of the Alzheimer’s Creativity Project lead a hands-on art-making workshop. Dennis is a professional sculptor and painter whose programs helped Sierra Vista become one of the most respected assisted living facilities in New Mexico. Lokvig founded the nation’s first Alzheimer’s Café in Santa Fe to offer creativity and socialization for people with dementia\, caregivers\, family and friends. \nPoet Stuart Hall of Santa Fe will be the featured guest artist. \nHelping us to offer this conference are these partnering organizations: the Alzheimer’s Association\, New Mexico Chapter; Alzheimer’s Café; Alzheimer’s Poetry Project; Discover Your Story\, Minneapolis Institute of Art; Institute of American Indian Arts\, MFA Creative Writing Department; Institute of Dementia Education & Art; Lifesongs at the Academy for the Love of Learning; New Mexico Literary Arts; the Institute of American Indian Arts\, Creative Writing Department; Southwestern College; and Vista Living Communities. \nThe conference is in support the New Mexico Alzheimer’s and Related Dementia State Plan\, with the endorsement of the Office of New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez\, the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department\, and the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. \n

SUMMARY:Pottery of the U.S. South: A Living Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Pottery of the U.S. South presented traditional stoneware from North Carolina and northern Georgia — current works characterized by earthy local clays and surprising effects of wood firing. Rooted in British and German ceramic traditions and once crucial to Southern agrarian life\, Southern pottery today remains vital\, a distinctive art form through which potters actively engage with their region in ways both old and new. As museum visitors explored these ways\, they were invited to consider for themselves the dynamics of a living tradition.

SUMMARY:(Indigène Vérité) Digital Reclamation of Indigenous Storyscapes Films by Jeffrey Palmer
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday October 18\, 2014\, in the In the Kathryn O’Keefe Theatre for screenings of films by Jeffrey Palmer. \nOrigins (18:26 mins.) Visually and sonically\, “Origins” records the vastness of landscape as well as the intimacy of nostalgic memory. For centuries\, Kiowa people traveled far distances\, following herds of buffalo across the Great Plains region of North America. On their travels they witnessed many places\, observed the universe\, and developed many stories. Through storytelling a history\, a geography\, and a cultural worldview was developed and passed down generation to generation. \nIsabelle’s Garden (8:26 mins.) “Isabelle’s Garden” is an uplifting story of a community coming together in reciprocity\, through the hopes and dreams of a young Choctaw girl and her garden. \nHonor Beats (7:26 mins.) This observational documentary highlights the sights and sounds of Indigenous culture alive and well in the Midwest. Positioned from a Kiowa perspective\, the filmmaker’s gaze exists within the liminal space of an insider to the culture and outsider to the exhibition. \nFor more information: 505.476.1269

SUMMARY:Fiesta of Cultures
DESCRIPTION:¡Viva la Fiesta! Enjoy panoramic views of the Rio Grande\, the Bosque and the Sandia Mountains during Fiesta of Cultures\, a celebration of local traditions including Pueblo\, Hispanic and Anglo. \nThe emphasis is on craft demonstrations\, folk art and pre-industrial lifeways. Before overcrowded freeways and information highways imposed the relentless sameness that is modern living\, life here in the Rio Grande Valley followed the more natural rhythms of spring flood and fall harvest. There was a season for everything\, “and a time for every purpose under heaven.” The importance of these natural rhythms is reflected in the care and skill that our ancestors lavished on such seemingly simple tasks as: carving a drum from a cottonwood stump; dying skeins of wool for a blanket; or forging a horseshoe with a hammer and anvil. \nThis event is geared toward families with children. There is no admission charge for any of the Fiesta of Culture activities. Food vendors will be available.   \nFor info: 505-867-5351
