SUMMARY:Book Signing Zuni Stew
DESCRIPTION:Come join author and longtime arts advocate Kent Jacobs in celebrating the release of his new book\, Zuni Stew : A Novel\, published by Sunstone Press. Books will be available for purchase through the museum gift shop or can be ordered online. \nZuni Stew is about Jack D’Amico\, a newly minted physician catapulted to a military posting on the Zuni reservation in New Mexico. Sadly\, his family is murdered. And he’s next on the list\, but why? Both a contract killer and the FBI are after him. In gratitude for saving his son\, a Zuni medicine man\, a shiwani\, spirits Jack into hiding. Speed and greed drive the chase while the energy of the four winds and those of the worlds above and below direct Jack to safety. Trying to stay alive\, Jack has to ask himself what is real\, what the shiwani sees or what the killers see? Or\, what Jack thinks he is seeing? Strap yourself in and go for the ride of your life. \nKent Jacobs is a graduate of Northwestern University College of Medicine with a specialty post-graduate diploma from the University of Colorado College of Medicine. Drafted into the U. S. Public Health Service\, he was posted to New Mexico\, his home\, on the Zuni reservation at Black Rock Hospital. Jacobs lived with the Zunis\, absorbing their culture\, religion\, ceremonies\, and the spirit of the land. He is also the author of Hopi Tea and The Turned Field\, both from Sunstone Press. He lives with his wife\, professional painter Sallie Ritter\, in the Mesilla Valley in southern New Mexico.

SUMMARY:Make a Camera Obscura A Pinhole Photography workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Santa Fe educator\, photographer and camera obscura developer Jackie Mathey for a family workshop on building a take-home tabletop camera obscura that can be used as drawing aids. Explore how light moves and images are formed. Travel in your imagination to the age of the Renaissance where devices like these were used by artists. It’s free\, but class size is limited; make a reservation by calling 505-476-5087. \nMathey has taught at the Santa Fe Photo Workshops and started a photography department at a local high school based solely on pinhole photography. So inspired by the camera obscura and the ethereal images produced by pinhole photography\, she started camp obscura\, a week-long course in pinhole photography\, committed to keeping film alive in an ever-increasing digital world. \nThis is a special class developed as part of the exhibition Poetics of Light: Pinhole Photography. \nDownload images of the kind of camera obscuras participants will make by clicking on “Go to related images\,” below.

SUMMARY:History and Mystery: Uncovering the Past in Harvey Houses
DESCRIPTION:What happens when you take on the renovation of a classic Harvey House? All the headaches of any historic-preservation project are joined by the joy of discovering an almost forgotten time. What stories can layers of paint tell? What mysteries lay deep in basements or at the bottom of a defunct fountain? Join Allan Affeldt\, Jenny Kimball and Barbara Felix for “History and Mystery: Uncovering the Past in Harvey Houses” on Sunday\, Jan. 25\, at 2 pm in the New Mexico History Museum Auditorium. The panel discussion is free with admission; Sundays are free to NM residents. Part of the exhibit Setting the Standard: The Fred Harvey Company and Its Legacy. \nAffeldt rescued La Posada in Winslow\, Ariz.\, from near-certain demolition and is now working on a long-sought-after renovation of the Castañeda Hotel in Las Vegas\, NM. La Fonda owner Jenny Kimball and architect Barbara Felix took on La Fonda in Santa Fe\, restoring the work of Mary Colter and John Gaw Meem—with a modern twist. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Let’s Take A Look Curators Look at Your Treasures
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe third Wednesday of each month from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. \nDuring this time\, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology are in the lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. These curators will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes\, the discussion among the curators may become as much or more informative than the identification of the artifact. \nThe event is always FREE and open to the public. Federal and State regulations prohibit the curators from appraising any artifact. Determining the Value of a Work of Art: The museum neither appraises or authenticates works of art. For information about art appraisals visit the web sites for American Society of Appraisers\, or Art Dealers Association of America. \n
