SUMMARY:The Book’s the Thing: Shakespeare from Stage to Page
DESCRIPTION:  \nWhere would we be without the printing press? We certainly wouldn’t have Shakespeare\, or the thousands of editions of his plays produced over the last four centuries. Not a bad run for one of the most mysterious playwrights in history. From February 5–28\, 2016 the Palace Press at the New Mexico History Museum presents a special exhibition in collaboration with the New Mexico Museum of Art’s First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare. \nIn The Book’s the Thing: Shakespeare from Stage to Page\, award-winning Palace Press printers Tom Leech and James Bourland mount a multi-part exhibit with a hands-on twist: Printed facsimiles of a First Folio page using a replica “Gutenberg” wooden hand press. (Lucky visitors can make their own prints for a take-home treat.)  \nIn addition\, Leech worked with Shakespeare scholar Robin Williams to curate creations by members of the Santa Fe Book Arts Group. Winning entries showcase 15 contemporary handmade artist books inspired by the works of Shakespeare. \nThe walls of the gallery also feature a collaboration between Leech and internationally known calligrapher Patricia Musick. Leech’s handmade\, marbled paper (embedded with recycled pages of Hamlet) provides a surface for Musick’s hand-calligraphed quotes from Hamlet\, Prince of Denmark. The artists successfully demonstrated similar works for past exhibits based on Romeo and Juliet\, Love’s Labour’s Lost and The Tempest. See http://www.musickstudio.com/pm_calligraphy.htm for examples. \nFinally\, a selection of items ranging from cigar labels and playing cards to rare books reveal examples of how Shakespeare’s works have been published and interpreted by artists over time. \nThe exhibition takes over a previous storage space in the east end of the Palace of the Governors\, with an entrance from the courtyard. It’s a fitting locale\, given that the Palace began construction in 1610\, six years before Shakespeare’s death. And in Act 3\, Scene 2\, of Twelfth Night\, Maria references the European continent’s growing awareness of the Spanish Indies (including New Mexico)\, when she says: “He does smile his face into more lines than is in the new map with the augmentation of the Indies.” \nPublic programs in support of this exhibit: \nPublic programs throughout the month: \nTuesdays–Sundays\, February 6–28\, 2016\, 1:30–3:30 pm\, Printing demonstrations \nPalace Press printers Thomas Leech and James Bourland demonstrate Shakespeare-style printing on a replica Gutenberg press in the exhibit space for The Book’s the Thing: Shakespeare from Stage to Page. Free with admission. \nSaturday\, February 13\, 2016\, 11 am: Music and design preview for the Santa Fe Opera’s UnShakeable \nTo commemorate both Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary and its own 60th\, the Santa Fe Opera commissioned a new work from composer Joseph Illick and librettist Andrea Fellows Walters. Mixing Shakespeare and sci-fi\, UnShakeable travels 25 years into the future after a pandemic called “Erasure” has corroded people’s memories. Will Shakespearean actors and former lovers Wyatt and Meridian reconnect and restore their bond? Hear selections performed by baritone Samuel Schultz\, soprano Jacquelyn Stucker\, and Joseph Illick. \nSunday\, February 21\, 2016\, 1:30–3:30 pm: Family Fun Day \nCheck out First Folio and The Book’s the Thing\, then come to the History Museum classroom to learn how to use crow quill pens and practice calligraphy\, Shakespeare-style. Free with admission; Sundays free to NM residents and all children.   \nTuesday\, February 23\, 2016 10 am: Community-in-Residence at the History Museum \nLocal arts organizations and Gary Glazner\, founder of the internationally acclaimed Alzheimer’s Poetry Project\, lead a fun-filled morning creating poetry and song inspired by The Book’s the Thing: Shakespeare from Stage to Page. This event is crafted especially for people with memory illnesses and their care partners\, though everyone is welcome to participate. Free. \nFriday\, February 26\, 2016\, 6 pm: “Hamlet\, Hamlet\, Hamlet” \nLiterary scholar Joshua Calhoun analyzes the three distinct versions of Hamlet produced in the 1600s. The Bad Quarto\, Good Quarto\, and First Folio are often mixed into one during modern performances. The result? A Hamlet who seems more passive and indecisive than the one in the First Folio. Free; seating is limited. \nSaturdays and Sundays in March 2016\, 1:30-3:30 pm: Printing demonstrations \nPressmen Tom Leech and James Bourland demonstrate a replica Gutenberg-era press\, with take-home samples of Hamlet’s soliloquy. \n

SUMMARY:An Unbroken Thread: Wool & Weaving in Northern New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:See a new film produced by the Española Valley Fiber Arts Center\, examine touchable textiles and try your hand at weaving on Sunday\, December 6\, from 1:30–4 pm. The 20-minute film\, An Unbroken Thread: Wool & Weaving in Northern New Mexico\, will be shown at 1:30 and 2:30 pm in the History Museum auditorium. Throughout the afternoon\, representatives from the Española Valley Fiber Arts Center and museum educators will engage visitors in the materials of the weaver’s trade and showcase finished textiles. This event is free with admission. Sundays are free to NM residents; children 16 and under are free daily. \nEVFAC produced An Unbroken Thread with Convivial Design Studio as part of its educational mission. It focuses on the story of how wool from Navajo-Churro sheep ends up in the beautiful blankets typical of northern New Mexico weavers. After laying out the historical events that brought wool and weaving to New Mexico\, it introduces viewers to shepherds\, sheep experts\, and weavers like Chimayó weaver Irvin Trujillo\, a 2015 winner of the Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts. \nSpanish colonists brought sheep to New Mexico\, and the animals quickly adapted to the environment\, their wool enriching local weaving traditions which developed individual styles that stand today as hallmarks of cultural tradition\, artistry and utility. \nWhat does wool feel like? What’s a simple weaving technique? You’ll learn that and more at this special event. \nThe Española Valley Fiber Arts Center is a unique resource for fiber artists and those who find beauty in the fiber arts. Visitors to the adobe storefront in the historic district of Española enter a world of looms\, colorful yarns\, beautiful handmade textiles\, books\, supplies\, and hands-on classes. The center’s mission is to preserve and promote the rich textile heritage of northern New Mexico by providing learning and teaching experiences for all ages and backgrounds\, and by providing encouragement and training towards economic sustainability in the Fiber Arts.  \nFunders of the film are: \nAlberts S. Kimball-Mary L. Anhalzer Foundation Inc. \nBread for the Journey\, Santa Fe \nCentury Bank\, Española \nDepartment of Cultural Affairs\, New Mexico Arts Division \nJemez Mountains Electric Cooperative Inc. \nLANL Foundation \nNorthern Rio Grande National Heritage Area\, Inc. \nRio Arriba County \nSanta Fe Community Foundation \nValley National Bank\, Española \nIn-kind donations were provided by Cipriano Vigil\, Española Valley Fiber Arts Center board members\, staff and volunteers. \nFor more information about the Española Valley Fiber Arts Center\, log onto www.evfac.org. \n

SUMMARY:Acting O U T A Symposium on Indigenous Performance Art
DESCRIPTION:This is part two of a three part\, multi-location symposium. \n9:00 a.m. Welcome: Mary Kershaw\, Director\, New Mexico Museum of Art \n9:05 – 10:20 a.m. Performing the Body: This panel seeks to unpack the influence\, politics\, and impact of using the physical body as a medium for actions\, including the associations and perceptions that audiences may have of an artist’s body. How do perceptions placed upon the performer affect the understanding and perception of a performance or action? These perceptions might include an artist’s gender\, race\, whether someone is deemed exotic or not\, scarred\, old\, young\, disguised\, threatening\, vulnerable\, or powerful\, for example. How does or can a performers’ body inform\, limit\, and expand a performative action?  How does the perception of the Indigenous artist’s body differ whether in the role of a performer or in the role of directing an action? How do these roles differ from the perspective of artists themselves? Moderator: Andrea R. Hanley\, Public + Program Manager\, IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts Panelists: Lori Blondeau\, Artist; Muriel and Gloria Miguel\, Artists and Co-founders of Spiderwoman Theater; and Adrian Stimson\, Artist. \n10:20 – 11:20 a.m. Performing the Body breakout session  \n12:30 – 1:45 p.m. Taking Place: Performance occupies time and space. This panel engages the idea of “taking place.” Taking place implies an action performed over a period of time\, as well as the implications of occupying time\, or occupying a physical location or site. Is the occupation of time and space by Indigenous artists an inherently political act? Why or why not? How are these actions understood within the context of past\, present\, and future and in relation to land\, nation\, and state? Moderator: Dr. Lara Evans\, Chair\, Museum Studies\, Institute of American Indian Arts Panelists: Candice Hopkins\, Chief Curator\, IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts; Peter Morin\, Artist and Assistant Professor\, Brandon University; and Cheryl L’Hirondelle\, Artist. \n1:45 – 2:45 p.m. Taking Place breakout session \n2:45 – 4:00 p.m. Summary and Observations: led by Merritt Johnson\, Artist \n  \nAbout the Symposium \nActing O U T: A Symposium on Indigenous Performance Art\, organized and hosted by the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in partnership with the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture\, the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Lensic Performing Arts Center take place on December 3 – 4th\, 2015.Keynote Discussion and performances at the Lensic Performing Arts Center take place Friday\, December 4\, 2015\, 6 – 8p.m..This symposium is made possible in part by a grant from the New Mexico Humanities Council. \nOver the past 42 years\, MoCNA has gained national and international acclaim for its innovative exhibitions\, symposia\, events\, and programs of contemporary Native art. MoCNA will lead in the discourse and understanding of contemporary Native art with an interactive symposium in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. This will be the first international symposium on Indigenous performance art to take place in New Mexico. Acting O U T recognizes the increasing importance and relevance of performance art—and its vanguard history—within Native and contemporary art. Symposium participants will include leading performance artists\, scholars\, curators\, and writers working in the field today\, in dialogue with the local\, national\, and international audiences. Participants include: Rebecca Belmore\, Guillermo Gómez-Peña\, James Luna\, Lucy Lippard\, Lori Blondeau\, Adrian Stimson\, and Spiderwoman Theater to name a few. \nOn December 3\, symposium and workshops will be held at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. The first of three panel discussions\, titled Performing for the Camera will be presented on that day as well as performance video screenings\, the workshop/performance art intensives include: Words + Actions: led by Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Rebecca Belmore\, and Sound + Performance: led by the Indigenous art collective Postcommodity. Speakers and panelists are invited to attend the workshops free of charge – 20 spaces will be available for community participants. \nAt 6p.m.on December 4\, internationally acclaimed artists James Luna (with Sheila Tishla Skinner)\, Guillermo Gómez-Peña\, and Rebecca Belmore will perform for one-night only in Santa Fe at the Lensic Performing Arts Center. For more than 30 years\, James Luna has provocatively explored the Native American experience and has created some of the most iconic artworks of our time. McArthur Award recipient\, Guillermo Gómez-Peña’s spoken word and actions engage notions of the “living archive” and radical citizenship. Rebecca Belmore’s performances activate the charged space between the personal and the political\, memory and trauma. Following the performances is a keynote discussion between the artists led by writer\, activist\, and curator Lucy Lippard. \nTickets are available for purchase through ticketssantafe.org  for the Acting O U T Symposium: Keynote Discussion and Performances taking place December 4th\, from 6 – 8p.m..Tickets: $25/ $10 Students with ID.

SUMMARY:FLAMENCO: From Spain to New Mexico In the Hispanic Heritage Wing
DESCRIPTION:Known as a folkloric art form that began among the Gypsy people of southern Spain\, this exhibition traces Flamenco to its arrival in the U.S. and its rise as an international art form now enjoyed by millions. The exhibition features costumes\, play bills\, instruments\, and paintings\, complemented by lectures\, workshops and performances.  Tracing flamenco’s journey from fifteenth and sixteenth century Spain to twentieth century Europe’s most cultured cities will be costumes both historic and contemporary\, musical instruments\, costume and set design sketches\, playbills\, sheet music\, posters\, and more. These objects chronicle flamenco’s evolution from rural\, folkloric tradition to elaborate staged productions incorporating extravagantly costumed dancers accompanied by virtuoso guitarists. The objects also trace flamenco’s transition to recording studios and the silver screen permitting it to gain a massive popular audience. Handed down from generation to generation\, between family and community members living at society’s edges\, flamenco incorporates historic dance and music traditions from Roman times to the Arabic period. Flamenco expresses a way of life shaped by a multitude of cultural and regional influences such as the Gitanos (Romany people) of Spain and Andalusian regional customs. In 2010\, UNESCO declared flamenco a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This exhibition also examines Spain’s ferias and fiestas their introduction to the southwestern US\, and the individuals who contributed to making flamenco a popular art form in this country. And as the exhibition title suggests\, flamenco’s integration into New Mexico’s culture will be examined.  This exhibition is the first ever to show the history and development of flamenco and its treasured role within the cultural milieu of New Mexico. The exhibition is accompanied by the book\, The Spirit of Flamenco: From Spain to New Mexico\, by Nicolasa Chávez (Museum of New Mexico Press\, Jacketed hardbound $39.95 ISBN:978-0-89013-608-9\, 192 pages\, 86 color and 54 black-and-white photographs). \nREAD: \nRead a personal story of growing up with Flamenco in New Mexico:  \nhttps://www.newmexico.org/nmmagazine/articles/post/artscapes-flamenco-94078/ \nRead about the exhibition and Flamenco’s rich history in New Mexico: \nhttps://www.elpalacio.org/2015/12/flamenco-from-spain-to-new-mexico/ \nEnjoy an interview with Santa Fe guitarist Miguel Romero remembering Flamenco’s early days in Santa Fe: https://www.elpalacio.org/2016/03/miguel-romero/ \nRead about the origins and history of Flamenco cante (the song):  \nhttps://www.elpalacio.org/2016/06/sounding-the-soul/ \n  \nLEARN: \nFor Educators – Download lesson plans for grades k – 12: \nEnglish- http://www.internationalfolkart.org/learn/lesson-plans/flamenco\,-castanets.html \nSpanish- http://www.internationalfolkart.org/learn/lesson-plans/flamenco\,-castañuelas.html

SUMMARY:Japanese Internee Fathers\, American Patriot Sons
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, Santa Fe was the site of one of the nation’s largest Justice Department internment camps. It primarily housed Japanese immigrants\, among them the Rev. Tamasaku Watanabe. On Sunday\, November 15\, at 2 pm\, Watanabe’s granddaughter\, Dr. Gail Okawa\, speaks on a brain-twisting aspect of that heartbreaking period: Even as our government locked up Japanese residents over fears of their supposed disloyalty\, their own children put on soldiers’ uniforms to defend the nation. \n“Compounded Ironies: Japanese Internee Fathers\, American Patriot Sons” is free with admission; Sunday free to NM residents. \nTensions between the United States and Japan were brewing well before the December 7\, 1941\, bombing of Pearl Harbor. Officials with the War and Justice Departments were working together to identify the leaders of Japanese American communities. As a minister\, the Rev. Watanabe made one of their lists. Within hours of the Pearl Harbor attack\, he was arrested and eventually exiled from Hawai`i. He and others ended up at the camp that today is the site of Santa Fe’s Casa Solana neighborhood. Between March 1942 and April 1946\, 4\,555 men of Japanese ancestry were held there. (The Army also operated an internment camp in Lordsburg.) \nThe men’s imprisonment was only the beginning. On February 19\, 1942\, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066\, authorizing the removal of people from military areas “as deemed necessary or desirable.” The military thereupon defined the entire West Coast as such an area. By June\, more than 110\,000 Japanese Americans were relocated. \nDespite the government’s distrust over the internees’ loyalty\, their sons were drafted into or volunteered for service in the U.S. military on both the European and Pacific fronts. \n“Not only did those sons serve their country\, in part consciously to prove the loyalty of the American Japanese to the United States\, but many had to visit their fathers behind barbed wire\,” Okawa said. “Seven of the Hawai`i internees’ sons were killed in action—one in the Military Intelligence Service in the Pacific\, and six in Italy and France as members of the 100th Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team.” \nThe 100th Battalion/442nd RCT is the most decorated unit in U.S. military history for its size and length of service: 21 Medals of Honor; over 4\,000 Purple Hearts\, 29 Distinguished Service Crosses\, 588 Silver Stars\, more than 4\,000 Bronze Stars\, and seven Distinguished Unit Citations. \nDr. Gail Y. Okawa is emeritus professor of English at Youngstown State University in Ohio and a visiting scholar at the Center for Biographical Research at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. Interested in the relationships among language/literacy\, culture\, and race in historical\, political\, and educational contexts\, she has published numerous articles in national journals and collections and has presented papers and lectures nationally and internationally. Since 2002\, she has been researching the politics of literacy\, identity\, and culture among Japanese immigrants from Hawai`i\, including those who were imprisoned during WWII in U.S. Department of Justice internment camps. \nIn addition to giving lectures at the University of New Mexico\, the College of Santa Fe\, and the New Mexico History Museum\, she co-chaired and organized a two-day New Mexico Centennial symposium in 2012 at the New Mexico History Museum\, co-sponsored by the New Mexico Humanities Council. She is concluding a book-length study\, Exile from Paradise: Hawai`i Japanese Immigrants in World War II U.S. Department of Justice Internment.
