SUMMARY:Landscape of an Artist: Living Treasure Dan Namingha Native Treasures: Indian Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Public Opening on Sunday\, March 20\, 2016 \nScreening of Dan Namingha: Seeking Center in Two Worlds at 1:00p.m. \nQ&A with Dan Namingha at 2:00p.m. \nEvery year at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Native Treasures: Indian Arts Festival\, the museum chooses to honor an artist as a MIAC Living Treasure. This year\, Dan Namingha (Hopi-Tewa) is being honored as the MIAC Living Treasure and 2016 Native Treasures Featured Artist. \nBorn and raised on the Hopi reservation\, Dan Namingha’s work is inspired by the Southwest region and subjects within his culture. For the past five decades his work has continuously evolved as he has refined his studio practice by experimenting with different mediums and techniques.  Throughout this evolution\, Namingha has employed alterations and abstractions to give the viewer a mere impression or glimpse of the subjects and landscapes.  This process allows him to share sacred aspects of his culture in familiar forms with the public\, while still protecting the sanctity of his Hopi and Tewa culture. Namingha’s work has garnered praise and has been well received on both the national and international art scene at numerous exhibitions. This March\, MIAC invites you to help us honor Namingha’s achievements and explore the Landscape of an Artist: Living Treasure Dan Namingha.

Some of the results take center stage as archival pigment prints in the New Mexico History Museum’s Mezzanine Gallery\, March 13–September 18\, 2016. \nSanta Fe Faces: Alan Pearlman Photographs features a selection from 90 portraits he took between 2009 and 2013. Included among them are images of flamenco artist Juan Siddi and Turquoise Trail rancher Archie West. Through them\, Pearlman aimed to reveal a moment in the City Different’s history\, focusing on the ways that clothing and settings speak to identities and occupations. \nA retired physician and loyal volunteer in the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives\, Pearlman has been making photographs since the mid-1970s. His work has been represented in many shows including Verve Gallery and the Santa Fe University of Art and Design. In honor of the Photo Archives’ Photo Legacy Project\, which aims to collect works from contemporary shooters\, he recently donated almost 200 prints to the History Museum\, including his highly valuable Santa Fe Faces collection. \n“This work will make a great addition to the Photo Archives for future researchers and exhibits\,” said Photo Curator Daniel Kosharek.

SUMMARY:Archaeology and Language in the Southwest Office of Archaeological Studies and Friends of Archaeology Brown Bag Lecture:
DESCRIPTION:Language is not the most obvious of the data sources available to Southwestern archaeologists. We can’t hear the ancient ones speak\, and there is no confident way to confirm (or deny) models of language history. But historical linguistics is relevant to archaeological models of deep culture history\, and language is an important part of current controversies in migration studies. Eric Blinman will present an introduction to Southwestern linguistics and a (biased) view of the correlation between Pueblo languages and archaeological models of Pueblo history. \nThe Brown Bag talks will take place at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology at 12:00 noon in the CNMA library. Seating is limited. Admission is free. \nThe Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road\, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road\, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like skylights on the roof.

SUMMARY:Pancho Villa and the US Army: A Training Ground for World War I
DESCRIPTION:On March 9\, 1916\, Mexican revolutionist Pancho Villa and his army of 1\,500 guerillas attacked Columbus\, NM\, killing 19 people and leaving the town in flames. President Wilson ordered General John J. (Black Jack) Pershing to lead 6\,000 American troops (including a young lieutenant named George S. Patton Jr.) into Mexico to capture Villa. For nearly two years\, they pursued him. Villa was still free when the “Punitive Expedition” ended\, but Pershing\, Patton and their men had learned important tactics that soon served them in another war far from home. \nTo commemorate this year’s 100th anniversary of the Columbus attack\, the New Mexico History Museum hosts a special lecture by noted author and photographer Jeff Lowdermilk and Helen Patton\, granddaughter of General Patton. “Pancho Villa and the U.S. Army: A Training Ground for World War I” is at 2 pm on Sunday\, March 6\, in the museum auditorium. Seating is limited. The lecture is free with admission; Sundays are free to NM residents. \nWhy did Villa attack Columbus? What new technologies did U.S. troops employ to look for him? Where did the nickname “doughboys” come from? Hear about that—and more\, including a prepared statement that Helen Patton will read from Sandra Pershing\, widow of the general’s grandson\, Colonel John Warren Pershing. \nJeff Lowdermilk is a writer\, photographer\, lecturer\, and student of World Wars I and II. He has traveled extensively throughout Europe\, documenting the path detailed in his grandfather’s World War I diary and resulting in the book\, Honoring the Doughboys: Following My Grandfather’s World War I Diary. He also wrote Saluting America’s World War I Heroes\, a historical and dedicatory piece centered on his experiences at the 87th anniversary of the Armistice. His photographs have been displayed at the National World War I Museum in Kansas City\, Missouri\, and also were featured in the 2010 Annual Report of the American Battle Monuments Commission. A passionate and creative storyteller\, Lowdermilk leads presentations and lectures around the world that weave together his rich imagery\, personal anecdotes\, and meticulous historical research. He lives in Santa Fe with his wife\, Annie. For more information on his work and presentations\, visit www.jefflowdermilk.com. \nHelen Patton\, a native of Hamilton\, Mass.\, who lives in Reims\, France\, is the granddaughter of General George S. Patton Jr. and the daughter of Major General George S. Patton IV\, the decorated Vietnam War hero. She is the founder of the Patton Foundation in the United States and the Patton Stiftung Sustainable Trust in Saarbrucken\, Germany. She works tirelessly to keep the memory of the World War II generation alive and helps soldiers\, veterans\, and their families. For more information about her work\, visit www.thepattonfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Sacred Realm: Blessings & Good Fortune Across Asia in the Cotsen Gallery\, Neutrogena Wing
DESCRIPTION:Almost universally\, yet through varied means and belief systems\, people have found ways to connect with these powers to bring stability to their lives\, to divert ill-will and harm\, and to attract love\, fertility\, prosperity\, longevity\, and safety … essentially\, to harness protection\, blessings\, and good fortune for themselves\, their loved ones\, and their communities. This exhibit invites visitors to explore some of the ways in which people seek and secure blessings and good fortune in Asia\, a vast and culturally diverse region. Presented are amulets\, votive offerings\, and ritual objects – objects with other-worldly\, divine qualities. SUMMARY:Collecting Shakespeare The Story of Henry and Emily Folger
DESCRIPTION:We hope you’ll join us as Stephen Grant introduces Collecting Shakespeare: The Story of Henry and Emily Folger. He’ll talk with fellow author John F. Andrews about what makes the 1623 First Folio an extraordinary volume\, and he’ll explain why there are more copies of it in one American library than there in all of the playwright’s native England.  Books will be available for signing after the lecture.
