SUMMARY:Time Trekkers Summer Camp
DESCRIPTION:To bring extra oomph to this year’s Time Trekkers Summer Camp\, the New Mexico History Museum has crafted a partnership with the Santa Fe Children’s Museum. During the weeklong camp\, History Museum educators will work with volunteers and staff from the Children’s Museum\, mostly at the History Museum. One day will be spent at the Children’s Museum\, where participants will learn about different kinds of 18th-century foods\, bake in an horno\, and explore traditional plants in the gardens. \n“The New Mexico History Museum and the Palace of the Governors is thrilled to partner with the Santa Fe Children’s Museum\,” said History Museum Director Andrew Wulf. “This exciting summer program reflects our shared mission to reach out to the younger members of our community and engage them with a fun array of activities and experiences that will bring them closer to the rich history and culture of our region.” \nSally Mittler\, chair of the Children’s Museum’s board of directors\, said: “The Earth Works space at the Santa Fe Children’s Museum\, with its child-size\, one-room adobe house\, the horno and gardens\, is the perfect setting for children to experience what New Mexico was like in the 18th century. In addition\, the Time Trekkers Summer Camp presents a perfect opportunity to partner with the New Mexico History Museum and build a relationship for future collaborations.” \nTime Trekkers features a weeklong trip to action-packed 1766. Children ages 9-12 will enjoy VIP access to the museums and get daily doses of hands-on learning—making yucca bracelets and adobe bricks\, trying on clothing styles worn 300 years ago\, practicing calligraphy\, hand-stitching their own book\, playing old-time games and more. \nBesides having fun and making new friends\, participants will strengthen their literacy skills\, explore different kinds of artwork\, and learn how history connects the past to the present. \nTime Trekkers takes place Monday–Friday\, June 13–17\, 10 am–4 pm. Cost is $125 (10 percent discount to children and grandchildren of Museum of New Mexico Foundation members). Space is limited. For registration info\, contact René Harris at rene.harris@state.nm.us\, (505) 476-5087; or Melanie LaBorwit at melanie.laborwit@state.nm.us\, (505) 476-5044. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fractured Faiths: Spanish Judaism\, The Inquisition\, and New World Identities
DESCRIPTION:In the 10th through 13th centuries\, Spain flowered into waves of golden ages\, as Muslim\, Jewish and Catholic peoples achieved new heights in science\, philosophy and the arts. That triculturalism\, though\, endured repeated challenges\, first by fundamentalist Islamic Almohads in the 12th century\, then by Christian kingdoms in the late-14th century\, when it finally deteriorated into dissent\, segregation and riots. \nBy 1492\, when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella unified the nation under the Catholic crown\, cultural chaos roared forth. A royal edict ordered all Jews to either leave the country or convert to Catholicism within four months—or else. (A similar edict befell Muslims in 1502.) For those who converted\, the Spanish Inquisition (and later\, the Portuguese and Mexican Inquisitions) stood ready to prosecute any Christian who failed to abide. Violators would endure prisons\, torture and death. \nWhat would you do? Repudiate the language\, religion and customs of your people in order to stay in your home and with your family? Or walk away from all you owned\, all you knew\, and embark upon treacherous journeys across land and sea toward a life you could barely imagine? \nFractured Faiths: Spanish Judaism\, The Inquisition\, and New World Identities\, opening May 22\, 2016 through Dec. 31\, 2017\, stands on the brink of that chasm and leaps into a diaspora that dates to biblical times. For the first time\, a major institution tells the comprehensive story of how Spain’s Jewry found a tenuous foothold in North America. Despite continued persecution\, its people persisted—sometimes as upright Catholic conversos\, sometimes as self-identifying “crypto-Jews.” \nEmblems of that struggle for cultural identity appear even today: A menorah carved into a tombstone in a Catholic cemetery; oral histories of tangled roots; Hispanic villages where genetic clusters speak to Jewish lineage. \nWorking with institutions in Spain\, Mexico City and New York\, curators Josef Díaz and Roger Martínez-Dávila have gathered physical evidence that includes: \n \n\n \nThe 1492 Decree of Expulsion\n \nThe 1507 Libro Verde de Aragon that lists all the people killed by the Inquisition\n \n15th-century tiles from El Transito Synagogue in Toledo\n \nAn 18th-century painting of a Mexico City auto-da-fé\n \nFamily trees that appear to scrub out evidence of Jewish heritage\n \nShackles\, a locket with the Inquisition emblem\, and more\n\nThey bring to life people like Don Bernardo López de Mendizábal\, a 17th-century governor of New Mexico\, and his wife\, Doña Teresa Aguilera y Roche. Hauled before the Inquisition in Mexico City\, they were charged with—though never convicted of—being secret Jews. \nFractured Faiths reunites Spanish artifacts with their New World counterparts for the first time to reveal the history of the Spanish Sephardim—the stalwarts\, the converts and the hidden Jews—and their long heritage within the Americas. A global story that played out on New Mexico soil\, this monumental exhibit details one of history’s most compelling chronicles of human tenacity and the power of cultural identity. \nIn concert with the exhibit\, Fresco Fine Art Publications will produce a bilingual catalog of the exhibition’s most important artifacts and documents. A programming series will deepen visitors’ understanding of Jewish life in the Americas and the struggle to preserve identity against often tragic odds. Lending institutions to Fractured Faiths include Spain’s Museo de Teruel\, Biblioteca Nacional de España\, and Museo Sefardí; Mexico City’s Museo Franz Mayer and the Museo Nacional de Arte; and the Hispanic Society of America in New York City. \nCurators: \nJosef Díaz is the History Museum’s curator of Spanish and Mexican colonial collections. His exhibitions include the current Painting the Divine: Images of Mary in the New World and Santa Fe Found: Fragments of Time. \nRoger Martínez-Dávila is an assistant professor of history at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs\, where he specializes in the study of medieval and early modern Spain\, Jewish religious minorities and converts in Spain\, and Spanish trans-Atlantic migration. He is also the CONEX-Marie Curie Fellow at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

SUMMARY:El Camino Real Historic Trail Site’s Second Annual Fiber Fair
DESCRIPTION:El Camino Real Historic Trail Site hosts its Second Annual Fiber Fair\, Saturday May 21 \, 2016. The event is free and runs from 10 am to 4 pm. \nThis Fiber Fair celebrates New Mexico’s rich and storied fiber arts tradition\, featuring Native and traditional Pueblo artists demonstrating the use of cotton\, willow\, wool\, and other materials in both textiles and basketry. Other traditions demonstrated will be Spanish\, and early and contemporary American fiber arts. Among them; quilting and weaving\, and two with related\, fun kids’ hands-on activities—wool preparation (carding\, spinning) and Spanish Colcha embroidery.  \nThis Fiber Fair provides a living and historical context for the state’s fiber tradition by including a livestock display of Navajo-Churro sheep. These sheep were first brought to New Mexico by Don Juan de Oñate in 1598 when he established the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. This heritage breed is renowned for its hardiness and adaptability and still provides wool for many of the nation’s professional fiber artists. It was from Churro wool that the early Rio Grande\, Pueblo\, and Navajo textiles were woven. Also on display will be the alpaca\, a much more recent arrival and also quite valuable to textile artists. \nAmong the more than eleven artists\, artisans\, and craftsmen demonstrating and selling their wares will be members of the Socorro and Magdalena Fiber Arts Guild\, fiber artists Andrew Harvier (Taos)\, Chris Lewis (Zuni)\, Audrey Magdalena (Zuni)\, Gerald Rosetta (Santo Domingo)\, Dina Rosetta (Santa Clara\, Joseph Montoya (Santa Clara)and the Griego family (Alamo Navajo Reservation) who will also have traditional Navajo food for sale; Sheri Armijo from Socorro\, will demonstrate Spanish Colcha; Marlon Magdalena (Jemez) will give a discussion of Pueblo clothing and will give a Native flute performance at 3pm. Francisco “Pancho” Ochoa\, an adobe craftsman\, will demonstrate the time-honored tradition of horno cooking. Also taking part in the Fiber Fair will be the Socorro and Magdalena Fiber Arts Guilds\, Puerta del Sol Alpacas\, and Rio Milagro Farms Churro Sheep. (This confirmed list is in formation as of April 28.) \nWhile strolling the grounds of El Camino Real Historic Trail Site visitors can purchase Navajo Tacos and other scrumptious food and drink. And to remember this special event\, visitors can purchase the arts and crafts of the participating artists. \nA special treat will be Jemez flute maker and musician Marlon Magdalena. He will give a Native flute performance at 3pm. \nThe event is free. \nDriving Directions: http://nmhistoricsites.org/el-camino-real/directions 35 miles south of Socorro on I-25\, Exit 115 left and follow signs. Site is between Socorro and Truth of Consequences. Gasoline and food at Exit 115 and Exit 139. \nNearby Attractions: Visitors may drive El Camino Real National Scenic Byway just north of the Center along Highway 1 and also visit the Civil War-era Fort Craig\, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge\, and the historic town of San Antonio where three restaurants (The Owl Café\, Manny’s Buckhorn Restaurant\, and Acosta’s Mexican Restaurant vie for your business). SUMMARY:Public Opening Two exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Finding a Contemporary Voice: The Legacy of Lloyd Kiva New and IAIA \nTaking a Fritz Scholder group portrait of IAIA faculty and the legacy of the institution’s cofounder Lloyd Kiva New as starting points\, this exhibition includes work by IAIA faculty and alumni from the 1960s to the present such as Scholder\, Neil Parsons\, T.C. Cannon\, Melanie Yazzie\, Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie\, and Will Wilson. New encouraged looking at new techniques and forms as a path to creating contemporary Indian art. The founding of IAIA in 1962 intersects with a significant moment in the history of Western Art. Ethnicity and culture\, political ideology\, feminism\, and the inclusion of personal narratives became legitimate forms of expression in mainstream contemporary art. The early years of IAIA were also an era of consciousness raising and civil rights movements in the United States. Native American self-determination was a major issue for many indigenous artists. \nEnough time has passed that the early days of IAIA\, looking back half a century now\, can be historicized and examined in greater context. The institution was founded during a period of great change and spurred shifts in how indigenous artists viewed themselves and their art\, paving the way for Native American artists to take their place in the global contemporary art field. Looking at the issues of identity still being raised in contemporary Native American art\, it is clear that the artwork of the 1960s and 70s began a conversation that continues to this day. \nCon Carino : Artists Inspired by Lowriders \nIt takes a special vision and a lot of hard work to transform an abandoned car into a one-of-a-kind sculpture on wheels\, but that’s exactly what makes New Mexico’s lowriders so special. Though they are works of art in their own right\, lowriders have also inspired artists working in other mediums. Responding to this unique cultural icon in photographs\, paintings\, sculptures\, and videos\, the artists in this exhibition explore issues of family\, gender\, religion\, and status. On view will be more than fifty works by artists including Lawrence Baca & Ron Rodriguez\, Justin Favela\, Miguel Gandert\, Alex Harris\, Nicholas Herrera\, Arthur Lopez\, Norman Mauskopf\, El Moisés\, Jack Parsons\, Meridel Rubenstein\, Luis Tapia\, Don Usner\, and others.

DESCRIPTION:Current scholarly understandings of Pre-Columbian Maya civilization are quite different from the traditional model of ancient Maya civilization that dominated the field of Maya studies until recently and still dominates public perception of the ancient Maya. In part\, this new view is due to both the significant increase in archaeological studies in the Maya area in the past few decades and the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic texts\, which have provided new insights into Maya history. Much of the change also is due to the introduction and rapid spread of settlement pattern studies conducted more than a half a century ago. This Brown Bag talk examines the major impact of the methodology of settlement pattern research on Maya archaeology and looks at new directions in the field. \nThe Brown Bag talks will take place at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology at 12:00 noon in the CNMA library. Seating is limited. Admission is free. \nThe Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road\, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road\, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like skylights on the roof.

SUMMARY:Citizen Min in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Citizen Min in New Mexico commemorates an event of national significance—the posthumous award of a Presidential Medal of Freedom to Minoru (Min) Yasui\, one of the heroes of Japanese American civil rights beginning in the World War II era of internment camps. It also presents a little-known event\, a historic encounter between Min and Senator Pete Domenici in Albuquerque in 1984. At 6 pm on Friday\, May 6\, Min’s daughter\, Holly Yasui\, offers a presentation that will include: \n \n\n \nA screening from her work-in-progress documentary film on her father\n \nLive readings from her biographical play\, Citizen Min\, performed by a local cast\n \nReminiscences of New Mexicans on Min’s activism for civil rights during the 1980s\n\nThis is a Free First Friday Evening event. Museum admission is free to everyone from 5 to 8 pm. The program is sponsored by the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League and funded by a generous grant from the New Mexico Humanities Council. \nCitizen Min takes place in the Multnomah County (Oregon) Jail during 1942\, where 25-year-old lawyer Minoru Yasui spends nine months awaiting the appeal of his test case to the U.S. Supreme Court. He had violated a curfew imposed on persons of Japanese ancestry\, walking the streets of Portland for three hours trying to get arrested and finally turning himself in at a local police station. Flashbacks show his family life in the farming community of Hood River\, Oregon; organization of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL); and the invasion of his family home by the FBI to arrest of his immigrant father. Jail scenes depict his interactions with two fellow prisoners on race]relations and the American dream. Letters from his family describe the conditions for Japanese Americans imprisoned in camps. And visits from the FBI and his attorney deal with legal and ethical issues. An epilogue relates Min’s life after the war as he continues to defend the human and civil rights of all people.

SUMMARY:Lowriders\, Hoppers\, and Hot Rods: Car Culture of Northern New Mexico
DESCRIPTION: ¡Orale! Take a ride into the creative reimaginings of American steel as captured in photographs\, hubcaps\, hood ornaments\, car show banners and\, yes\, actual cars. Lowriders\, Hoppers\, and Hot Rods: Car Culture of Northern New Mexico\, opening May 1 through March 5\, 2017\, at the New Mexico History Museum focuses on mobile works of art and their makers—home-grown Nuevomexicanos who customize\, detail\, paint and upholster these favorite symbols of Hispanic culture. \nPhoto Curator Daniel Kosharek has pulled together an extensive collection of images by Don Usner\, Annie Sahlin\, Jack Parsons\, Sam Adams\, Norman Mauskopf\, Dottie Lopez\, Gabriela Campos\, Meridel Rubinstein and others. In addition\, the exhibit features a chromed and touchable engine\, miniature-scale model-car collections\, trophies\, memorabilia and other ephemera. The museum lobby will host a rotating selection of cherry examples. The thrill ride doesn’t stop there. \nOn May 21\, the New Mexico Museum of Art will unveil Con Cariño: Artists Inspired by Lowriders\, an exhibit (through October 9\, 2016) curated by Katherine Ware showing photographs and art inspired by car culture. Ahead of the exhibits\, on April 15\, the Museum of New Mexico Press will release a companion book featuring essays by Ware and Usner. \n“I’m convinced there are two kinds of people in the world\,” Kosharek said. “Those who drive for the purpose of getting from point A to point B\, mere transportation if you will; and people like me who drive cars to\, well\, drive cars. Two types of people\, two world views. This exhibit is about the latter: People who express themselves through pride in their ride.” \nAfter decades of cruising the streets and back roads of northern New Mexico\, lowrider cars have come into their own as a symbol of Hispanic cultural identity. They’re as evocative as red and green chile\, rural adobe architecture\, and the distinctive dialect of New Mexican Spanish. These cars have been celebrated in books and movies\, and their creators congregate by the hundreds in car shows throughout the region to show off their works to an admiring public. That phenomenon is only one part of a broad car culture. \nConsider the classic “bombs” (large\, rotund American cars ca. 1930–1955); “originals” (old cars restored to their original condition down to the upholstery and engines); “hoppers” (cars outfitted with hydraulic lifters that allow them to bounce and jump like June bugs on a griddle); and “hot rods” (classic American cars modified with large engines). \n“It’s all part of an American love affair with the internal combustion engine and the glimmering accoutrements that these vehicles have inspired through history\,” said Kosharek\, whose own first car was a 1957 Chevy two-door hardtop in matchstick color—royal blue on bottom\, baby blue on top. \nThe term “lowrider” refers to either a car whose suspension has been lowered to inches from the ground or the person who drives it. In Spanish\, it’s bajito y suavecito\, or low and slow. Lowriders\, the cars\, are built as works of art\, expressions of faith\, to honor the dead\, bring families together\, center a marriage and\, most important\, provide a proud ride. Lowriders\, the drivers\, require the skills of an engineer\, the aesthetic of an artist\, and the patience of a monk to create highly personalized\, one-of-a-kind\, mobile expressions. \nThe first set of cars visitors to the exhibit will see are a 1983 Chevy Monte Carlo owned by Orlando Martinez Jr.\, an Española resident and one of our security officers; a 1948 Chevy Fleetline owned by Albert “Sonny” Jaramillo of Santa Fe; a 1931 Fort hot rod owned by Pete Vigil of Chimayó; and the 1950 Mercury “Johnny Tapia lowrider” once owned by Albuquerque’s late boxer and now owned by Chuck Montoya of Albuquerque. \nIn the 1980s\, Española\, NM\, proclaimed itself the Lowrider Capitol of the World and\, for years\, Riverside Drive has been a place to see the best examples. In 1992\, the Smithsonian Institution put “Dave’s Dream” on permanent exhibition. Started by Dave Jaramillo of Chimayo\, NM\, the 1969 Ford LTD was completed by his family and friends after his death in a car accident. Some of the cars bear airbrushed murals to the dearly departed or pay homage to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Others sing in simple celebration of their original appearance\, only better—somehow sleeker\, certainly lower\, boasting lustrous paint jobs that evoke sweet candy apples\, deep mountain lakes and dangerously seductive lipstick. \nTheir origins remain up for debate\, with post-war Los Angeles making the strongest claim to birthing lowriders as a Latino reaction to Anglo hot rod culture. Today in communities from Los Angeles\, San Antonio\, northern New Mexico and elsewhere\, car culture thrives. Lowriders\, Hoppers and Hot Rods seeks to elevate that culture beyond its common stigmas and stereotypes to celebrate skilled craftsmanship and commitment to family and community. Car clubs regularly reach out to local youths\, giving them gears-and-wrenches reasons to drive a straight road. \nProgramming events will roll down the window for a glimpse at those cultures\, including roundtable discussions with premier artisans\, a poetry slam with youths mentored by adults\, a collaborative theatrical event with Española high-schoolers\, lectures\, film screenings\, and demonstrations. Details for those events are still in the shop. In the meantime\, stay tuned to find out whose cars will get the star treatment inside the museum itself. \n
