SUMMARY:Las Posadas
DESCRIPTION:The annual candle-lit procession of Las Posadas travels around the Santa Fe Plaza and concludes in the Palace Courtyard. This version of an old Hispanic tradition recreates Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to give birth to the Baby Jesus—and throws in a few devils for good measure. Stay for carols\, cookies and hot cider in the Palace Courtyard. Free. \nThe History Museum and Palace will close at 3 p.m. to prepare for this event.

SUMMARY:Guatemalan Textile Show & Sale
DESCRIPTION:2 Days Only – A special collection of vintage textiles from Richard Mandell presented by David and Sally Hamilton of Austin\, Texas. This is the first ever exhibit of these unique examples of Maya weaving from this important collection. \nRichard Mandell (1929 – 2013) was an American historian\, art collector\, triathlete and world traveler.   After graduating from Wayne State in Detroit\, he spent years as a merchant seaman.   Besides English\, he learned to speak German\, French and Spanish fluently.  He earned his M.A. in history from U. of Colorado and his PhD from the U. of California\, Berkeley.  In 1963 he joined as an associate professor of history at the University of Toronto. In 1966 he moved to a full professorship in modern European history at the U. of South Carolina  (Columbia)\, where he remained as a Distinguished Professor until his retirement in 1992.  His most well known book is “The Nazi Olympics” concerning the Berlin Olympics of 1936.  He is among those credited with initiating academic debate on the origins of modern sports. \nTo celebrate his 60th birthday\, he rode a bicycle from New York to San Francisco in 24 days.  He was a legendary age group competitor in distance running into his 70’s.  \nRichard Mandell was also a renowned art collector.  From 1980 until 2010\, he traveled to Guatemala regularly\, collecting fine Maya textiles\, jade and dance masks.  His collection of Guatemalan Maya textiles is estimated to contain 2000 items.  Exhibited here are 45 carefully selected items that we were allowed to purchase from the Mandell Collection\, graciously made available to us by Richard’s son\, Max Mandell.  \n

SUMMARY:Drawing the Line: The Early Work of Agnes Martin A free “First Friday” lecture
DESCRIPTION:Albuquerque author Christina Rosenberger will speak about artist Agnes Martin (1912-2004)\, an iconic figure in 20th century art with a continuing artistic legacy in New Mexico.  \nCanadian born\, Martin started to make a name for herself in the New York art scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s\, but in 1967\, abandoned her career for a reclusive life in the New Mexico desert. She did not return to her work for nearly a decade. Rosenberger’s talk focuses on Martin’s formative years in New Mexico and the decisive impact New Mexico had on Martin’s iconic grid paintings in the early 1960s.   \nRosenberger’s new book\, Drawing the Line: The Early Work of Agnes Martin (University of California Press\, 2016)\, explores how the rapidly evolving creative processes and pictorial solutions Martin developed between 1940 and 1967 define all her subsequent art. It also traces New Mexico’s role as a vibrant creative center in the middle of the 20th century\, tracing the networks of art\, artists\, and information that moved between New Mexico\, New York\, and California in the postwar period.

SUMMARY:Conversations in Painting\, Early 20th Century to Post-War American Art
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition centered around painting movements in 20th Century America\, beginning with Robert Henri \, Portrait of Dieguito Roybal\, San Ildefonso Pueblo and ending with Agnes Martin\, Untitled #6. Between those two benchmarks we explore the evolution of abstraction\, federal support for art and artists during the Depression Era\, the Transcendental Painting Group\, Abstract Expressionism\, Hard Edge Painting and Minimalism through paintings from the New Mexico Museum of Art collection. Juxtaposition is used to promote a dialogue both within and between these painting movements to encourage a more individual and intuitive appreciation of the individual paintings by the viewer. \nArtists included will be Robert Henri\, John Sloan\, Gene Kloss\, Florence Pierce\, Raymond Jonson\, Frederick Hammersley\, Agnes Martin\, Han Hoffman and Mala Breuer.
