SUMMARY:12 Switches Two Stage Performances by Northern New Mexico College Students
DESCRIPTION:Students Create Theatrical Performance from History Museum’s Archive of Lowrider Culture \nNorthern New Mexico College Students Perform “12 Switches\,” Based on the Lives and Rides of Lowriders\, March 11-12 \nSaturday\, March 11\, 5 pm • Nick Salazar Theater\, Española \nSunday\, March 12\, 2 pm • New Mexico History Museum Auditorium\, Santa Fe \nThe New Mexico History Museum’s vast archival collection that produced the popular exhibition\, Lowriders\, Hoppers and Hot Rods: Car Culture of Northern New Mexico\, has inspired a student theatrical performance based on the lives and rides of lowriders in our community. Utilizing the museum’s resources\, theater students from Northern New Mexico College created “12 Switches\,” a theatrical performance speaking to family heritage\, car culture and more. Performances are open to the public and will take place at the Nick Salazar Theater in Espanola on Saturday\, March 11 from 5:00-6:00pm\, with an encore performance at the New Mexico History Museum on Sunday\, March 12 from 2:00-3:00pm. \nThe performances are a collaborative project joining Northern New Mexico College\, Santa Fe Performing Arts’ “Play it Forward” program and the New Mexico History Museum. The multi-organizational partnership resulted in a course for teens and college students focusing on material housed at the New Mexico History Museum. Since September 2016\, students have been preparing the 45-minute stage performance featuring 12 separate scenes. Bringing local history to the next generation of performers\, historians\, and museum-goers\, the program aimed to inspire students to take pride in their history\, demonstrate potential career paths and build their theatrical skills. \n“The Lowrider exhibition was highly collaborative and we wanted to extend that approach to our public programs\,” said Meredith Davidson\, curator of the 19th and 20th Century Southwest Collection at the New Mexico History Museum. “This performance is an exciting way to fold the community into the work we do to promote a better understanding of our regional history.” \nBoth performances are free and open to the public. For questions\, please contact Megan Burns of Santa Fe Performing Arts at 505-982-7992 or by email at sfperformingarts@gmail.com. Reservations will not be available for the performances.

SUMMARY:Opening of No Idle Hands The Myths & Meanings of Tramp Art
DESCRIPTION:This is the first large-scale museum exhibition dedicated to tramp art since 1975. For many years\, “tramp art” was believed to have been made by itinerants and hobos\, thus its name. It has been demonstrated that this notion is largely erroneous\, however the name “tramp art” has remained the only terminology used for this practice\, and the paucity of scholarly studies to dispel the mistaken notions about tramp art have allowed the myths to persist. No Idle Hands will examine the assumptions related to class\, quality\, and the anonymity of the makers of tramp art and consider this practice instead through the lens of home and family while tracing its relationship to industry—whether as individual ethos or big industry. No Idle Hands will also include works by contemporary makers\, thus establishing tramp art as an ongoing folk art form rather than a vestige of the past. \nOpening events include a lecture by Clifford Wallach from 1 to 2 pm.  From 2 to 4pm Enjoy making notched paper frames\, an art project for ages 3 to 103\, live music by the Holmsteaders\, and a reception hosted by the Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation. FREE admission for all generously funded by the Carol & Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation. \nThe exhibition and accompanying publication supported by the International Folk Art Foundation; the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and donors to the Exhibitions Development Fund; the Folk Art Committee/Friends of Folk Art; the Greenberg Foundation; and the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. \n

SUMMARY:Tramp Art: The Art of Layered Inspirations Lecture with Clifford Wallach
DESCRIPTION:Longtime tramp art dealer and aficionado Clifford Wallach discusses his three decades of research on tramp art and reflects upon his personal journey in this field. Drawing on his findings and interviews with artists or their descendants and acquaintances\, Wallach\, the author of three books on tramp art\, will shed new light on various questions related to tramp art\, including who the makers of tramp art were—and are today. \nThis lecture is in conjunction with the public opening of the exhibition No Idle Hands: The Myths & Meanings of Tramp Art. Free admission and all opening events generously funded by the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation. \n  \nCaption:Keepsake box with hand and hearts (United States\, late 19th-early 20th century)\, wood\, 8 ½ x 10 x 7 in. DESCRIPTION:No Idle Hands: The Myths & Meanings of Tramp Art will present more than 150 examples of tramp art\, concentrating on works the from the United States\, with additional examples from France\, Germany\, Switzerland\, Scandinavia\, Canada\, Mexico and Brazil to demonstrate the far reach this art form has had. \nThis is the first large-scale museum exhibition dedicated to tramp art since 1975. SUMMARY:¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte!
DESCRIPTION:¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte! celebrates the NHCC Art Museum’s growing permanent collection with a revitalized vibe and a brand new selection of works. This exhibition was a collaborative project as the entire NHCC Visual Arts staff and interns combed through the collection and worked together to decide which pieces should welcome in 2017. This sampling explores the contributions of these artists and how each work can serve as a reminder of the heart that thrives in strong and resilient communities. \nThe collection contains over 2\,500 artworks by Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, and Latina/o\, artists from around the globe most of which have been generously donated to the museum by artists and collectors. It reflects the diversity of Latina/o art and expression in all of its vibrancy\, creativity\, pointed humor and social consciousness. The National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum exists to support and engage the work of these artists and share their creations and their stories with the broader community.

SUMMARY:OAS Brown Bag Talks: A Southwest Archaeologist’s Adventure on the Island of Yap Stephen S. Post\, Deputy Director Emeritus\, Office of Archaeological Studies
DESCRIPTION:In July and August 2016\, Dr. James E. Snead\, California State University-Northridge\, invited me to join a research project on the Island of Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia. Located 6500 miles west of Los Angeles\, Yap covers only 34 square miles and is the administrative and chiefly center of the Western Caroline Islands chain that stretches 800 miles to the east. Before full-scale European contact in 1885\, Yap was a highly stratified paramount chiefdom with more than 120 villages within 12 districts inhabited by as many as 50\,000 people. This highly regulated society built their homes\, community and ceremonial structures\, waterworks\, and inter- and intra-village paths of stone. Origins\, village and settlement patterns\, and an economic system based on stone money have been investigated by past archaeologists\, but James’ project is the first to systematically study a sample of the hundreds of kilometers of stone paths found throughout the island. My talk will introduce Yap\, its people and culture\, and our investigation\, which took us from the coastal tidal flats to the upland savannahs of this exotic and far flung place. \n  \nThe Friends of Archaeology and the Office of Archaeological Studies are pleased to announce the Brown Bag Talks of 2017. Talks will take place at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology at 12:00 noon on selected Tuesdays (unless otherwise noted in the descriptions below) in the CNMA library. Seating is limited. Admission is free. \nCenter for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Rd.) is located off of Caja del Rio Rd\, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Animal Shelter and the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road\, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like structures on the roof. The building is not well-signed.

SUMMARY:Pulling Back the Veil on Iran
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning screenwriter and producer Kirk Ellis and his wife Sheila\, passionate folk art collector\, for images and experiences from their recent visit to historic cities of Teheran\, Yazd and Isfahan\, Iran. \nThe Iran that Kirk and Sheila will talk about is one famous for many things—among them its long tradition of Persian–Islamic arts and architecture whose covered bridges\, palaces\, mosques and minarets in some instances dating as long ago as 2\,500 years. The Ellis’ conversation will pull back the veil on an ancient culture overshadowed by decades of Western media reporting that has been more influenced by political events. And\, Sheila will relate what it was like for a woman to travel in Iran. \nAs Kirk says\, “The country’s portrayal in Western media bears little resemblance to what Sheila and I experienced. We were struck by the commonalities\, finding there a people who identify more with their remarkable Persian heritage. This trip—our first—was a revelation. Iran is an overwhelmingly welcoming country—secular\, urban and cosmopolitan.”  \nThe Ellis’ visually stunning images—from street and market scenes\, to the arts and crafts\, and architecture—will be the jumping off point for a lively and wide-ranging conversation. \nKirk noted that\, “While there were restrictions on our movements—staying with an authorized guide with an approved itinerary—we had more freedom than we’d expected and were able to slip the leash and wander.” This is evident in their extraordinary and not-often seen images. \n“The genie is out of the bottle and he will be hard to put it back in. Sheila and I want folks who attend our talk to know that you have to go beyond what you read in the papers—nothing beats the face-to-face interaction like we had. We hope everyone leaves as inspired as we were by this amazing country.” \nKirk and Sheila’s hour-long conversation will be followed by a Q & A with the audience.
