SUMMARY:Trinity Site Motor Coach Tour
DESCRIPTION:One of the “must see” things for residents and visitors alike in New Mexico is Trinity Site\, where the world’s first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16\, 1945. Located on the north end of what is now White Sands Missile Range\, Trinity Site is open to the public twice each year\, on the first Saturday in April and again on the first Saturday in October. The New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo hosts a motor coach tour to the site.

DESCRIPTION:Eric Blinman\, Director\, Office of Archaeological Studies Florescence and Crisis in the New Mexican Southwest: AD 900-1300 When agriculture is successful and reliable\, it can fuel the development of social and economic complexity. Sustainability of cultural innovation\, however\, is dependent on the fit between climate variation and community needs. The tenth through thirteenth centuries of New Mexico history represent the best and worst outcomes of climate change. Benign and predictable farming conditions supported the florescence of Mimbres and Chaco\, but as climate changed in ways less suited to reliable agriculture\, those cultural patterns were challenged. Climate doesn’t determine how people and cultures respond\, but in the Southwest is constrains economic potential\, either allowing or requiring adaptation to changed conditions. \nJohn Ware\, Executive Director (retired)\, Amerind Foundation Bridge to the Present: Migrations and Cultural Adaptations in the Post-AD 1300 Southwest The climate changes of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries resulted in dramatic reshaping of the Puebloan world and culture. Economic and social crises encouraged migration and often fragmenting of long-stable communities. Assimilation\, tolerance\, or rejection of migrants is evident in all parts of New Mexico as Puebloan peoples endeavored to reestablish successful families and communities. No region was spared direct or indirect impact\, and adaptation to new geographic and social landscapes was progressive over the period. Experimentation with new social and ceremonial institutions\, and the interactions between distinct cultural groups\, continued into the Spanish Colonial period. The result has been the complex pattern of similarity and difference of modern Pueblo peoples. \nThis lecture will take place at the Santa Fe Woman’s Club\, 1616 Old Pecos Trail\, 1pm – 4pm\, $75 for both dates\, $45 for one date. SUMMARY:Light Tight : New Work by Meggan Gould and Andy Mattern
DESCRIPTION:This two-person exhibition creates a visual conversation about how the tools and conventions of photography can be reconsidered and manipulated. The title of the show refers to the need to keep light sensitive material covered up\, or “light tight\,” until it is ready to be used. \nGould’s work has long been characterized by an ongoing exploration of how photography affects the way we see the world. In her most recent series Don’t Open Box in the Light (2015-2016)\, she uses photographic sheet film\, but not in the usual way. Instead of placing it in a camera to capture latent images\, she renders it impotent by rubbing away the emulsion\, burnishing what is left\, and then drawing on it using pigment ink drained from digital printers. Her methods are both meditative and laborious\, intimately reconnecting the artist with her materials while simultaneously creating a hybrid between darkroom and digital photography that defies classification. The final pieces are unique\, hand-made images with a patterned\, rhythmic appeal. \nWhile Gould focuses on the material aspects of the medium\, Andy Mattern turns his attention to the standardization of commercially manufactured photography paper and its packaging and marketing. Starting with the cardboard boxes in which the paper is advertised and stored\, Mattern sands and scrapes off their recognizable logos and images before adding tape and other collage elements. His interventions neutralize the boxes’ corporate messages\, creating a new surface that denies their original function. He photographs the resulting abstract images\, reclaiming the boxes as sites for creative freedom and transforms their corporate messaging into a personal vision. The resulting prints in the series Standard Size (2014) are both straightforward and cryptic\, familiar and strange.

SUMMARY:Cady Wells: Ruminations
DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico Museum of Art\, in partnership with The Philbrook Museum of Art\, Tulsa\, OK\, presents the dynamic and psychologically penetrating watercolor paintings of Cady Wells (1904-1954). This group of more than 25 works features Wells’ uniquely modernist interpretations of Southwestern landforms and cultural-religious traditions. \nBorn to a traditional\, well-to-do New England family\, Wells settled in northern New Mexico beginning in 1932. There\, his art took on the complex layering of a spirit inspired by music\, calligraphy and stained glass\, but traumatized by active WWII combat\, sexual intolerance\, and Atomic bomb experiments at Los Alamos\, just 12 miles from where he lived and painted. Such mid-century influences marked his increasingly surrealist style with equal parts rapture and disquietude.

DESCRIPTION:The event is offered in conjunction with the Sacred Realm: Blessings & Good Fortune Across Asia exhibition and celebrates its final day on March 19\, 2017. 

At the end of  Piers Watson’s presentation\, paper flowers made by the public as offerings throughout the run of the Sacred Realm exhibition will be burned in the fire pit\, concluding the exhibition.    \nDemonstration will be held on the Milner Plaza in front of the Museum of International Folk Art and the lecture will be in the  Museum of International Folk Art\, on Museum Hill \nDemonstration is open to the public\, and the lecture is free with museum admission \nThe Sacred Realm exhibition features amulets\, votive offerings\, and ritual objects imbued with other-worldly\, divine qualities. Whether used in sacred dance\, to pray or help individuals show gratitude or ask for specific favors\, to interact with ancestors and deities\, or to ward off evil and attract positivity\, these objects are means to similar ends. As part of the exhibition\, audiences are invited to engage in gallery activities such as making amulets and creating offerings\, and are invited to attend the lecture and demonstration to learn about the Luted Crucible casting process—an ancient technique for making metal sculptures including dieties that are represented in Sacred Realm. \nLuted Crucible casting is a pre-Industrial Age lost wax technique\, found in the archeological record at the 10th century\, that is still in use in parts of India and West Africa but is almost unknown in Europe and America. Due to its efficiency\, low cost and low risk to health\, it is considered a natural form of bronze-casting with great potential for small-scale casting\, exploration and experimentation. \nGuest artist Piers Watson learned the process of Luted Crucible casting as an apprentice of hereditary tribal casters of Bastar from Chhattisgarh\, India. In 2015 he self-published\, “The Luted Crucible\, a Pre-Industrial Method of Metal Casting\,” the only book written by a practitioner of the craft and focused entirely on the subject. As an artist\, he exhibits his work in Europe and the USA.

DESCRIPTION:Jeremy Sabloff\, Past President and External Professor\, Santa Fe Institute \n \n\n \nIntroduction to the Lecture Series\n\nGeorge T. Crawford\, Director\, Blackwater Draw\, National Historic Landmark \n \n\n \nEarly Peoples of New Mexico and the Southwest: First Peoples through the Initial Adoption of Maize\n \nArchaeological research is rapidly expanding our knowledge of the earliest human groups that occupied the Southwestern United States. The Paleoindian periods of Clovis and Folsom were preceded by widespread earlier peoples whose dating and lifeways are just beginning to be understood. Lifeways changed with the transition to a postglacial environment\, bringing higher population densities and adaptations to smaller and smaller territories. Maize was integrated into the Archaic subsistence systems 3\,500 to 4\,000 years ago on a region-by-region basis\, eventually effecting population\, settlement and territorial decisions\, and setting Southwestern peoples on the path to a Formative way of life.\n\nEric Blinman\, Director\, Office of Archaeological Studies \n \n\n \nFormative Foundations of Puebloan Cultures through AD 900\n \nIncreasing dependence on agriculture\, equivalent to the Neolithic revolution of the Old World\, created a patchwork of cultural adaptations in the Southwest. Feedback between environment\, population density\, and technological innovation resulted in distinctive agricultural adaptations across the broad sweep of the Southwest\, from canal-based irrigation to dry farming at high elevations. These economic adaptations coincide with the generalized culture areas of Southwestern archaeology\, and internal differentiation in stylistic variables appear to reflect underlying ethno-linguistic variety within those areas. Utilizing the museum’s resources\, theater students from Northern New Mexico College created “12 Switches\,” a theatrical performance speaking to family heritage\, car culture and more. Performances are open to the public and will take place at the Nick Salazar Theater in Espanola on Saturday\, March 11 from 5:00-6:00pm\, with an encore performance at the New Mexico History Museum on Sunday\, March 12 from 2:00-3:00pm. \nThe performances are a collaborative project joining Northern New Mexico College\, Santa Fe Performing Arts’ “Play it Forward” program and the New Mexico History Museum. The multi-organizational partnership resulted in a course for teens and college students focusing on material housed at the New Mexico History Museum. Since September 2016\, students have been preparing the 45-minute stage performance featuring 12 separate scenes. Bringing local history to the next generation of performers\, historians\, and museum-goers\, the program aimed to inspire students to take pride in their history\, demonstrate potential career paths and build their theatrical skills. \n“The Lowrider exhibition was highly collaborative and we wanted to extend that approach to our public programs\,” said Meredith Davidson\, curator of the 19th and 20th Century Southwest Collection at the New Mexico History Museum. “This performance is an exciting way to fold the community into the work we do to promote a better understanding of our regional history.” \nBoth performances are free and open to the public. It has been demonstrated that this notion is largely erroneous\, however the name “tramp art” has remained the only terminology used for this practice\, and the paucity of scholarly studies to dispel the mistaken notions about tramp art have allowed the myths to persist. No Idle Hands will examine the assumptions related to class\, quality\, and the anonymity of the makers of tramp art and consider this practice instead through the lens of home and family while tracing its relationship to industry—whether as individual ethos or big industry. No Idle Hands will also include works by contemporary makers\, thus establishing tramp art as an ongoing folk art form rather than a vestige of the past. \nOpening events include a lecture by Clifford Wallach from 1 to 2 pm.  From 2 to 4pm Enjoy making notched paper frames\, an art project for ages 3 to 103\, live music by the Holmsteaders\, and a reception hosted by the Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation. SUMMARY:Aerial Photography and the 1929 Chaco Canyon Field School Session Lecture with Frances Joan Mathien\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:A retired National Park Service archaeologist\, Mathien proposed researching the field schools and asked that her colleague\, Joyce Raab\, and she be afforded space and use of UNM facilities during the project. She works with the Chaco Culture National Historic Park Museum Collections as a volunteer researcher and considers “this [project] part of the cooperative relationship between the two institutions\,” UNM and Chaco Culture NHP. \nThough officially retired\, Mathien is Adjunct Assistant Professor\, Department of Anthropology\, University of New Mexico and Research Associate with the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology\, UNM. Major career interests have been on socio-economics of Chaco Canyon and turquoise as a pre-Columbian item of exchange.

SUMMARY:¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte!
DESCRIPTION:¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte! celebrates the NHCC Art Museum’s growing permanent collection with a revitalized vibe and a brand new selection of works. This exhibition was a collaborative project as the entire NHCC Visual Arts staff and interns combed through the collection and worked together to decide which pieces should welcome in 2017. This sampling explores the contributions of these artists and how each work can serve as a reminder of the heart that thrives in strong and resilient communities. \nThe collection contains over 2\,500 artworks by Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, and Latina/o\, artists from around the globe most of which have been generously donated to the museum by artists and collectors. It reflects the diversity of Latina/o art and expression in all of its vibrancy\, creativity\, pointed humor and social consciousness. The National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum exists to support and engage the work of these artists and share their creations and their stories with the broader community.
