SUMMARY:Letters About Literature Awards Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico State Library has announced the state level champions of the 2017 Letters About Literature competition. This annual writing contest for young readers in grades 4 through 12 is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and is administered nationally by the Library of Congress Center for the Book.  \nLetters About Literature encourages young readers in grades 4 -12 to read a book and write a personal letter to the author explaining how the book changed or shaped their perspective on themselves or the world. The New Mexico State Library manages the state level program and submits a champion to the national competition for each of the three levels. \nRaven Callaway-Kidd\, a fifth grade student at Turquoise Trail Elementary in Santa Fe\, is the Level 1 champion. Raven wrote her letter to Holly Schindler about her book\, The Junction of Sunshine and Lucky. \nNatashia McDonald\, an eighth grade student at Des Moines Municipal Schools in Des Moines\, is the Level 2 champion. Her letter is addressed to The Fault in Our Stars author\, John Green. \nRebekah Hildebrant\, an eleventh grade student at Arrowhead Park Medical Academy in Las Cruces\, is the Level 3 champion. Rebekah wrote her letter to Rick Riordan about his books The Lightning Thief and The House of Hades. \nFour hundred and seventy-four New Mexico students entered the 2017 contest. Of those 474 entries\, 83 writers advanced to round two. In Level 1\, there were 128 entries with 21 letters advancing to round two and 16 to round three state judging. In Level 2\, there were 209 entries with 31 letters advancing to round two and 15 of those to round three state judging. In Level 3\, there were 137 entries with 31 letters moving on to round two and 21 to round three state judging. All of the writers who advanced to round two and three will receive an award certificate in the mail. Champions will receive a $150 cash prize.  \nFrom the 52 New Mexico state finalists\, the state judges selected three champions\, three second place writers\, three third place writers\, and seven honorable mention letters. Champions\, second and third place winners\, and honorable mention recipients will be honored at the State Capitol on May 12 at 1:30 PM. Secretary Gonzales and State Librarian Peiffer will congratulate the students and the state champions will read their letters aloud.  \nThe judging panel was comprised of government officials\, librarians\, authors\, and book professionals from across the state including Department of Cultural Affairs Cabinet Secretary Veronica N\, Gonzales; State Librarian\, Kathleen Peiffer; Retired State Librarian\, Ben Wakashige; State Library Commissioner\, Elizabeth Martinez; John Byram\, Director of the University of New Mexico Press; Corey Bard\, Ruidoso Public Library Director; Kristina Carter\, Youth Services Librarian\, Clovis-Carver Public Library; Susan Beck\, Professor and Head of Access Services\, New Mexico State University Library; and Sarah Stark\, Author\, Santa Fe. \nThe three New Mexico champions’ letters now advance to the national competition and will be sent to the Library of Congress for the national judging round\, where they will be competing for a $1000 cash award. SUMMARY:Film Screening THROUGH THE REPELLENT FENCE: A Land Art Film
DESCRIPTION:The UNM Department of Theatre and Dance\, IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Art (MoCNA)\, and the New Mexico Museum of Art present Decolonial Gestures : A Symposium on Indigenous Performance. This two-day symposium will consist of performances\, workshops\, a film screening\, and a roundtable discussion. The program includes a screening of Through the Repellent Fence: A Land Art Film at the St. Francis auditorium in New Mexico Museum of Art followed by a conversation with Raven Chacon (Diné)\, Cristóbal Martínez (Mexica)\, Kade L. Twist (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) of Postcommodity. \nThe film\, directed by Sam Wainwright Douglas\, follows art collective Postcommodity as they strive to construct Repellent Fence\, a two-mile long outdoor artwork that straddles the U.S.-Mexico border. Postcommodity consists of three Native American artists who “put land art in a tribal context.” Aided by the communities on both sides of the border in 2015 the artists installed a series of 28 huge inflatable spheres emblazoned with an insignia known as the “open eye” that has existed in Indigenous cultures from South America to Canada for thousands of years. The spheres were evenly spaced apart and extended north and south of the border a mile in each direction. “It’s a metaphorical suture stitching together cultures that have inhabited these lands long before borders were drawn.” \nThe film provides an intimate glimpse into the arduous process behind creating an ambitious artwork that will give voice to the shared history and enduring culture of Indigenous societies that have made the region their home for thousands of years before a border ever divided it. Woven throughout this narrative thread are lush scenes using stunning cinematography to absorb viewers into striking land art environments that have preceded Post Commodity’s work. Scenes with other artists and intellectuals working in the land art realm provide context and insight as well. SUMMARY:Public Exhibition Opening at the Governor’s Gallery Living Treasures: A Celebration of Vision
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture’s (MIAC) Living Treasures: A Celebration of Vision exhibition opens in the New Mexico Governor’s Gallery on May 5\, 2017. Each year since 2006\, MIAC honors an innovative Native American artist for the annual Native Treasures: Indian Arts Festival. Artists\, communities\, and museum patrons come together to recognize a living artist who has contributed to their community and shown excellence in their artistic practice.    \nMIAC names the Living Treasure each year in advance of the Native Treasures Festival\, Santa Fe’s only museum-quality Indian art show and sale. More than 200 Native American artists participate at the invitation of MIAC\, to represent the best of the Native American art world. Many exhibiting Native Treasures artists have pieces in the Museum’s permanent collection. Participating artists represent a wide range of pueblos and tribe; the art forms exhibited range from traditional to contemporary and from emerging artists to masters in their creative field.  \nLiving Treasures: A Celebration of Vision exhibition will be on display in the Governor’s Gallery on the fourth floor of the New Mexico State Capitol. Two receptions are planned and all are welcome. The opening reception is scheduled for May 5\, 2017\, from 3pm to 5pm\, and a reception during Indian Market week is scheduled for Thursday\, August 17\, 2017\, from 3pm to 5pm.  \nThe exhibition features MIAC’s fourteen Living Treasures: Robert Tenorio (2006)\, Mike Bird-Romero (2007)\, Connie Tsosie Gaussoin (2008)\, Upton Ethelbah\, Jr. (2009)\, Lonnie Vigil (2010)\, Roxanne Swentzell (2011)\, Tony Abeyta (2012)\, Tammy Garcia (2013)\, Joe & Althea Cajero (2014) Keri Atuambi & Teri Greeves (2015)\, Dan Namingha (2016)\, and Jody Naranjo (2017). The exhibition Living Treasures: A Celebration of Vision honors remarkable individuals who have achieved artistic excellence in their works of painting\, sculpture\, beadwork\, pottery and jewelry.

SUMMARY:Darkness and Light in the Land of Enchantment: The Art and Friendship of Cady Wells and Georgia O’Keeffe
DESCRIPTION:Georgia O’Keefe wrote for the catalogue cover of Cady Wells first New York City exhibition\, in 1944\, “I’m glad that you are showing Cady’s paintings at the same time that Stieglitz is showing mine\, because I think we are the two best painters working in our part of the country.” These two artists\, whose lives intersected in dramatic and complex ways during the 1930s and 40s\, lived and painted within similar landscape parameters of northern New Mexico. Each was deeply devoted to certain markers—O’Keeffe\, to the Pedernal of Abiquiu; Wells to the Barrancas of Pojaoque. Both created powerfully expressive landscapes that they rendered in paintings whose emotional tones\, color\, form\, and meanings could not have been more diametrically opposed.

San Ysidro blesses the fields\, brings rain and discourages drought\, and assures a healthy growing season for local crops such as chile\, beans\, corn and squash. \nThe exhibition highlights contemporary and traditional depictions of this adored saint through approximately 65 art works by artists of all ages. New Mexican artist revere San Ysidro and a unique sense of place is reflected through these diverse interpretations of his image. \nThe NHCC is collaborating with numerous community members and organizations throughout the duration of this exhibition which runs through planting and harvesting seasons. DESCRIPTION:CreativeMornings\, a breakfast lecture series for the creative community hosted in over 160 cities around the world\, tackles the global theme of “beyond” with Currents New Media directors Frank Ragano and Mariannah Amster. \nIf you’ve visited the Santa Fe railyard area over June in the last several years you’ve probably walked into Currents New Media’s annual event. Since 2002 Parallel Studios has been producing\, curating and designing small and large scale video exhibitions in Santa Fe. In 2010 they launched Currents New Media. Each year\, the free Currents festival brings together work of established and emerging New Media artists from New Mexico\, across the US\, and around the globe. \nEnjoy some networking with other creative professionals before the talk\, along with coffee and pastries courtesy of Iconik Coffee Roasters. \nThis event is free.

SUMMARY:A Movable Feast: Foods of New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:“A Movable Feast: Foods of New Mexico” is an art show presented by the New Mexico Watercolor Society\, Southern Chapter. The show will be in the Museum’s Arts Corridor from through Aug. 6. \nFrom Puebloan times to the present\, agriculture and farming have played a very important role in making the Chihuahuan Desert and all of New Mexico a place where people could live. Indian\, Spanish and modern farmers have always accepted the challenges of limited water and harsh terrain as they planted and plowed to produce the foods we eat today. With hard work and dedication\, they have given us such foods as chile\, nuts\, wine\, honey and fruit; along with things like squash\, corn\, beans\, sunflowers and yuccas. In this exhibit\, NMWS members have created works based on their own visions and inspirations. \nThe New Mexico Watercolor Society was founded in 1969 as a statewide chapter of the Southwestern Watercolor Society\, and became an independent entity in 1975. The purpose of the NMWS is to elevate the stature of watercolor as an important painting medium and to educate the public to this effort; the ultimate goal is to make New Mexico known nationally for its watercolor artists. As the southern half of the state of New Mexico grew\, the need for a local chapter of the NMWS was recognized by a small group of active artists in the Las Cruces area. A proposal for the Southern Chapter’s formation was presented to and approved by the NMWS Board (in Albuquerque) in October\, 2001.

SUMMARY:Still on the Hill A concert of stories and songs about instrument makers of the Ozarks
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an afternoon with Still On the Hill\, this unique concert of stories and songs focused on handmade instruments outside of what more people think of as a guitar\, fiddle or banjo. These creations are adorned with marbles\, bbs\, paint and bones. Inside\, there are metallic skeletons consisting of saw blades\, door springs\, chainsaw parts and even glass bottles.  There will be 8 of Ed Stilley’s creations at the concert where attendees will be invited to hold and play the instruments after the performance. A book signing follows \nPresented in conjunction with the exhibition No Idle Hands: The Myths and Makers of Tramp Art.   By Museum Admission\, adult single museum visit is $7.00 for New Mexico residents\, $12.00 for out-of-state visitors; youth 16 and under and Museum of New Mexico Foundation members always free.

This exhibition considers how the states identity was formed by various\, sometimes fantastical and often contradictory interpretations of the areas land\, traditions\, and histories. Imagining New Mexico does not presume to be a complete survey of the history of the state\, but instead a collection of fantasies about what New Mexico has come to mean for artists over time.

DESCRIPTION:Cady Wells : Ruminations \nThe New Mexico Museum of Art\, in partnership with The Philbrook Museum\, Tulsa\, OK\, presents the dynamic and psychologically penetrating watercolor paintings of Cady Wells (1904-1954). This group of more than 25 works features Wells’ uniquely modernist interpretations of Southwestern landforms and cultural-religious traditions. Born to a traditional\, well-to-do New England family\, Wells settled in northern New Mexico beginning in 1932. There\, his art took on the complex layering of a spirit inspired by music\, calligraphy and stained glass\, but traumatized by active WWII combat\, sexual intolerance\, and Atomic bomb experiments at Los Alamos\, just 12 miles from where he lived and painted. Such mid-century influences marked his increasingly surrealist style with equal parts rapture and disquietude. \nLight Tight : New Work by Meggan Gould and Andy Mattern \nThis two-person exhibition creates a visual conversation about how the tools and conventions of photography can be reconsidered and manipulated. Artists Meggan Gould and Andy Mattern investigate the basic materials of photography and subvert the idea of photographic representation and the commercialization of the medium. The title of the show refers to the need to keep light sensitive material covered up\, or “light tight\,” until it is ready to be used. \nImagining New Mexico \nOver the past century artists have imagined and reimagined New Mexico through their work. SUMMARY:Sleeping During the Day Vietnam 1968
DESCRIPTION:There is no shortage of photographs documenting the horrors of the Vietnam War. \nIn fact\, between military photographers and the free press\, millions of photographs of the Vietnam conflict were taken between 1962 and 1975. But\, there are very few that document the war from the perspective of a young gay man serving in the United States Army. \nThe New Mexico History Museum will display this unique perspective through the photographs of Santa Fean Herbert Lotz\, acquired through the museum’s Photo Legacy Project in 2008. The exhibition\, Sleeping During the Day: Vietnam 1968\, will run from April 7 to October 1\, 2017.

Don’t miss the chance to hear from these two local artists about their boundary-challenging new work! Meggan Gould’s work creates a hybrid between darkroom and digital photography defying classification. While Gould focuses on the material aspects of the medium\, Andy Mattern turns his attention to the standardization of commercially manufactured photography paper and its packaging and marketing.
