DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second installment of our Lincoln After Dark tours! \nThe history of Lincoln\, New Mexico is mired with acts of revenge\, tragic accidents\, vigilante justice\, and senseless violence. Between 1870 and 1886\, more than fifty people met a violent end along this quarter-mile long stretch of dusty road. This fact led President Rutherford B. Hayes to declare Lincoln’s main thoroughfare as “The Most Dangerous Street in America.” Hundreds more were killed throughout the region during a time when feuds were most often settled at gunpoint\, lawmen were oftentimes involved with the criminals they swore to apprehend\, and danger lurked around every one of life’s corners. \nPlease call 575-653-4025 to reserve your tickets. All four members of the Lalo family take part in their ceremonial duties at Hotevilla\, continue to farm staple crops using the Hopi dry-farming method in the sand dunes and gardens below Third Mesa\, and supplement their income by creating and marketing their artwork. \nRaynard Lalo is an award-winning kachina carver who sells his work at the Heard Museum Fair and the Santa Fe Indian Market\, Gene Lalo is also a kachina carver and has won awards at the Hopi Festival at the Museum of Northern Arizona\, Dorleen Gashweseoma has won numerous awards for her woven wicker plaques\, piki trays\, and large willow peach baskets\, and Valjean Lalo has earned several awards for his ceremonial clothing\, including the very complex technique of diamond twill weaving. \nOn Saturday\, May 20th the Lalo family will begin the weekend by demonstrating Hopi farming methods including a discussion of their farming tools\, field preparation\, sowing of seeds\, maintenance of their fields\, and protection from pests and predators. On the following day\, Sunday\, May 21st\, the Lalos will exhibit their work at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology; Dorleen will explain Hopi basketry\, Raynard and Gene will demonstrate kachina carving\, and Valjean will introduce Hopi weaving techniques. All of the artwork created by the Lalo family will be on display throughout the weekend and available for purchase. \nParticipants at this event will be treated to a catered meal on both Saturday and Sunday from The Feasting Place\, owned and operated by Norma and Hutch Naranjo from Ohkay Owinge and Santa Clara Pueblo. \nThis event is an extremely unique opportunity for hands-on learning about traditional Hopi farming and artwork at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology. The cost of this event is $95 for one day and $150 for both days for FOA members\, and $105 for one day and $165 for both days for non-FOA members. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Julie Sasse will give an overview of the many women artists and gallerists who contributed significantly to the rise of contemporary art in the Southwest. \nDr. Julie Sasse is the chief curator and curator of modern\, contemporary\, and Latin American art at the Tucson Museum of Art. Since joining the museum in 2000\, she has organized more than ninety solo and group exhibitions of regional\, national\, and international artists. She is the author of more than thirty-five catalogs\, books\, and published essays\, including the recently published Botanical Visions: The Art of MF Cardamone\, published by Pomegranate Press. \nIn 2016 and 2017\, Sasse was a scholar-in-residence at the Women’s International Study Center in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, for her book project\, “Art Gal: Elaine Horwitch and the Rise of Contemporary Art in the American Southwest.”She received a Louise Foucar Marshall Foundation Fellowship in 2013 for her dissertation\, Blurred Boundaries: A History of Hybrid Beings and the Works of Patricia Piccinini; a Clark Art Institute fellowship in 2008 for her book\, Trouble in Paradise; and a Latino Museum Studies Fellowship in Washington\, DC\, in 2007. \nSasse holds a BA from Southern Illinois University\, an MFA and an MA in art history from Arizona State University\, and a PhD from the University of Arizona. \nPlease register through the Women’s International Study Center website.

SUMMARY:Voices of Counterculture in the Southwest
DESCRIPTION:At a time when concerts and gatherings on the West Coast gave birth to 1967’s infamous “Summer of Love\,” New Mexico was experiencing its own social and environmental revolution depicted in Voices of Counterculture in the Southwest. \nAs the Vietnam conflict dragged on for more than a decade\, and the trajectory of civil rights activism escalated nationally\, issues of justice\, identity and social norms sparked activism among the nation’s youth. Young people from across the country flocked to alternative living situations in growing communes or organized to fight social and political injustices. From the mid-1960s into the 1970s\, the well-known draw of New Mexico’s open skies and cross-cultural environment sparked a pilgrimage of many young people to the area. \nOn display through February 11\, 2018\, the exhibition spans the decades of the 60s and 70s exploring this influx of young people to New Mexico and the subsequent collision of cultures. Through archival footage\, oral histories\, photography\, ephemera and artifacts\, the exhibition examines this cultural revolution and asks how these forms of rebellion inform the ways we think about contemporary social and political questions of what it means to be an engaged citizen.

SUMMARY:2nd Annual Bosque Redondo Memorial Gourd Dance Healing the Past for our Children’s Future
DESCRIPTION:Fort Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial is hosting their Second Annual Gourd Dance on Saturday May 13\, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Beginning at 8:30 p.m.\, Joe Tohonnie Jr. and the White Mountain Apache Crown Dancers will be performing their fire dance to close the ceremonies.  Gourd Dancing actually originated with the Kiowa Tribe. According to Kiowa Gourd Dance coordinator JJ Ahboah\, “in the time when humans could still communicate with animals\, a Kiowa man was separated from his tribe. Lost\, hungry\, and dehydrated\, he began to hear singing. Following the singing\, he came upon a Red Wolf standing upright. This Red Wolf shared songs and dances with the Kiowa man from sunrise to sunset. When the Kiowa man returned to his tribe\, he shared all of the songs and dances with them. This dance began as a warriors dance as well as to promote well-being within the tribe. Now it has evolved into a social dance\, because so many other tribes have adopted it.” The Navajo and the Mescalero Apache adopted Gourd Dancing in the mid 20th Century. Today\, Gourd Dances can be held for many purposes such as: return of veterans\, birthdays\, or in the case of Fort Sumner Historic Site\, to promote healing and strengthening of intertribal relations. Many Navajo and Mescalero Apache Elders are journeying from the Four Corners region and the area surrounding the Sacramento Mountains to be a part of this historic dance\, despite what their oral traditions have dictated. For many\, the oral traditions passed down from the generations held in captivity at Bosque Redondo Reservation\, have stated not to go back to Fort Sumner or speak of the atrocities that occurred. However\, the current generations understand that the contemporary tragedy occurring is the loss of cultural history with their youth.  Through this dance\, they are reclaiming that history.  We invite you and your families to join us on this momentous occasion.  A dance of this magnitude has not been observed in Fort Sumner since the signing of the Treaty of 1868. \n  \nAdditionally\, there will be respected speakers\, traditional foods\, and craft vendors from both the Mescalero Apache Tribe and the Navajo Nation present.  Admission is free. SUMMARY:Letters About Literature Awards Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico State Library has announced the state level champions of the 2017 Letters About Literature competition. This annual writing contest for young readers in grades 4 through 12 is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and is administered nationally by the Library of Congress Center for the Book.  \nLetters About Literature encourages young readers in grades 4 -12 to read a book and write a personal letter to the author explaining how the book changed or shaped their perspective on themselves or the world. The New Mexico State Library manages the state level program and submits a champion to the national competition for each of the three levels. \nRaven Callaway-Kidd\, a fifth grade student at Turquoise Trail Elementary in Santa Fe\, is the Level 1 champion. Raven wrote her letter to Holly Schindler about her book\, The Junction of Sunshine and Lucky. \nNatashia McDonald\, an eighth grade student at Des Moines Municipal Schools in Des Moines\, is the Level 2 champion. Her letter is addressed to The Fault in Our Stars author\, John Green. \nRebekah Hildebrant\, an eleventh grade student at Arrowhead Park Medical Academy in Las Cruces\, is the Level 3 champion. Rebekah wrote her letter to Rick Riordan about his books The Lightning Thief and The House of Hades. \nFour hundred and seventy-four New Mexico students entered the 2017 contest. Of those 474 entries\, 83 writers advanced to round two. In Level 1\, there were 128 entries with 21 letters advancing to round two and 16 to round three state judging. In Level 2\, there were 209 entries with 31 letters advancing to round two and 15 of those to round three state judging. In Level 3\, there were 137 entries with 31 letters moving on to round two and 21 to round three state judging. All of the writers who advanced to round two and three will receive an award certificate in the mail. Champions will receive a $150 cash prize.  \nFrom the 52 New Mexico state finalists\, the state judges selected three champions\, three second place writers\, three third place writers\, and seven honorable mention letters. Secretary Gonzales and State Librarian Peiffer will congratulate the students and the state champions will read their letters aloud.  \nThe judging panel was comprised of government officials\, librarians\, authors\, and book professionals from across the state including Department of Cultural Affairs Cabinet Secretary Veronica N\, Gonzales; State Librarian\, Kathleen Peiffer; Retired State Librarian\, Ben Wakashige; State Library Commissioner\, Elizabeth Martinez; John Byram\, Director of the University of New Mexico Press; Corey Bard\, Ruidoso Public Library Director; Kristina Carter\, Youth Services Librarian\, Clovis-Carver Public Library; Susan Beck\, Professor and Head of Access Services\, New Mexico State University Library; and Sarah Stark\, Author\, Santa Fe. \nThe three New Mexico champions’ letters now advance to the national competition and will be sent to the Library of Congress for the national judging round\, where they will be competing for a $1000 cash award. SUMMARY:Film Screening THROUGH THE REPELLENT FENCE: A Land Art Film
DESCRIPTION:The UNM Department of Theatre and Dance\, IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Art (MoCNA)\, and the New Mexico Museum of Art present Decolonial Gestures : A Symposium on Indigenous Performance. This two-day symposium will consist of performances\, workshops\, a film screening\, and a roundtable discussion. The program includes a screening of Through the Repellent Fence: A Land Art Film at the St. Francis auditorium in New Mexico Museum of Art followed by a conversation with Raven Chacon (Diné)\, Cristóbal Martínez (Mexica)\, Kade L. Twist (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) of Postcommodity. \nThe film\, directed by Sam Wainwright Douglas\, follows art collective Postcommodity as they strive to construct Repellent Fence\, a two-mile long outdoor artwork that straddles the U.S.-Mexico border. Postcommodity consists of three Native American artists who “put land art in a tribal context.” Aided by the communities on both sides of the border in 2015 the artists installed a series of 28 huge inflatable spheres emblazoned with an insignia known as the “open eye” that has existed in Indigenous cultures from South America to Canada for thousands of years. The spheres were evenly spaced apart and extended north and south of the border a mile in each direction. “It’s a metaphorical suture stitching together cultures that have inhabited these lands long before borders were drawn.” \nThe film provides an intimate glimpse into the arduous process behind creating an ambitious artwork that will give voice to the shared history and enduring culture of Indigenous societies that have made the region their home for thousands of years before a border ever divided it. Woven throughout this narrative thread are lush scenes using stunning cinematography to absorb viewers into striking land art environments that have preceded Post Commodity’s work. Scenes with other artists and intellectuals working in the land art realm provide context and insight as well.
