DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico Museum of Art will celebrate its 100 year anniversary in November of 2017. The St. Francis Auditorium was built as part of the Museum in order to provide the community and traveling visitors a place to enjoy music concerts\, lectures and theatrical performances. A traditional New Mexico church-like setting\, in a secular space\, the St. Francis Auditorium continues to be a gathering place for concerts\, lectures\, slide and video presentations\, literary events\, seminars\, and workshops. As we prepare to celebrate 100 years\, we are offering programming that represents a broad range of cultures and time periods. \nSombras del Pais (Shadows of the Country) will reintroduce audiences to a native son of New Mexico\, Felipe Delgado\, and his accompanist\, Anna Maude Van Hoose\, who were popular performers in the 1930s. In recreating programming performed by the duo\, audiences will enjoy popular music of the time\, as well as Spanish and New Mexican folk music. The program represents an instance in New Mexico’s multicultural history when Anglo and Hispanic audiences alike came together to hear these vibrant musical traditions. \nSombras del Pais\, a lecture-performance\, tells the story of the musical duo of Felipe Delgado (1899-1940) and Anna Maude Van Hoose (1884-1960)\, who toured the Southwest throughout the 1930s\, performing the music of Spain\, Mexico\, New Mexico\, Argentina and California\, all sung in Spanish.  Delgado\, a native of Las Vegas\, New Mexico\, had made a name for himself in Hollywood and in radio as the featured soloist in a nationally broadcast radio program\, Media Hora Espanola\, when he began performing with pianist Van Hoose. The duo performed throughout the Southwest\, including three recitals at the St. Francis Auditorium of the New Mexico Museum of Art. \nTheir musical collaboration was successful in part because of the times in which they lived. Hollywood in the twenties had popularized Spanish-speaking stars\, Spanish-influenced music\, and Spanish-language films\, and this popularity continued into the thirties. Delgado’s radio success was an outgrowth of this phenomenon. \nAdditionally\, the audience will hear music performed in the very same space\, St. Francis Auditorium\, as those ‘30s concerts. By the end of the performance\, they will have a sense of the remarkable music that no doubt helped people cope with the challenges of the Great Depression. \n$10 admission\, VIP $20. SUMMARY:In Search of Nampeyo Lecture and Booksigning with Steve Elmore
DESCRIPTION:In Search of Nampeyo presents new information on Nampeyo’s early life as a Hopi potter in the 19th century. Working with the British trader Thomas Keam\, she single-handedly saved Pueblo pottery from obscurity and created a new art movement\, the Sikyatki Revival\, by re-interpreting designs from the past. Mr. Elmore’s discovery of Nampeyo’s early ceramics in the Keam collection in the Peabody Museum at Harvard is presented\, as well as information that strongly suggests Nampeyo was an early American modernist. Signed copies of Mr. Elmore’s book In Search of Nampeyo: The Early Years\, 1856 – 1942 will be available. \nProgram free with Museum admission.

In the early 1960s Bond traveled to Cuba and returned to fight against capitalism and exploitation of the land. She came to New Mexico in the early 1970s and dedicated her activist efforts to environmental causes. SUMMARY:Brainpower & Brownbags  Making It Matter Again: Exploring our Roots\, including Life Ways\, Food Ways\, and Our Future
DESCRIPTION:For three months in 2013\, Swentzell and thirteen other Pueblo volunteers ate only the foods available to their ancestors before first contact with Europeans in 1540.  They started with the idea that Pueblo people had adapted over countless generations to the foods available in their local environment.  But now\, the imported and processed foods in modern diets means  “our food is like we are living in a foreign country.”  In her talk\, Swentzell will recount the dramatic results of this experiment on the physical\, mental\, and spiritual health of the participants.

DESCRIPTION:New Mexico was one of the top recipients of funding from New Deal agencies during the Great Depression.  Many of the physical products of these back-to-work programs lie hidden in our own back yard.  On June 6\, we’ll explore the vaults\, private offices\, and back hallways of buildings funded by New Deal programs\, and view seldom seen art made by New Deal artists. \nIn the morning we’ll search the storage rooms of the New Mexico Museum of Art\, the largest single repository of New Deal art in the state.  Other stops include the New Mexico History Museum and its WPA-era furniture\, bultos\, and retables\, the William P. Henderson murals at the Federal Courthouse\, the old county courthouse building designed by John Gaw Meem\, and the old municipal building\, now the Santa Fe Public Library. \nAfter a three-course lunch at Osteria D’Assisi\, we’ll board an open air tram to visit New Deal buildings at the New Mexico School for the Deaf and the New Deal art collection in the Superintendent’s residence\, the New Mexico Supreme Court building with its 1930s art collection\, and the National Park Service’s Old Santa Fe Trail Building\, built by the New Deal’s Civilian Conservation Corps.  \nKathy Flynn\, Executive Director of the National New Deal Preservation Association will lead the tour\, and curators and historians will join us to tell the stories of New Deal programs at the various stops.  \nThe tour fee is $85 for Friends of History Members and $95 for non-members\,  Priority is given to Friends of History Members.  The fee includes a $10 tax-deductible contribution to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation\, a three-course lunch at Osteria D’Assisi\, and the tram price. \nThe tour is limited to 25 participants\, so please sign up early by calling Andrea Chavez at 505.476.5101

SUMMARY:Artistic Heritage: Syrian Folk Art on Display in Lloyd’s Treasure Chest
DESCRIPTION:Folk Art is a treasure\, and Lloyd’s Treasure Chest offers a participatory gallery experience highlighting the Museum’s permanent collection of over 136\,000 objects of international folk art from over 100 countries\, representing thousands of unique cultures. Because the entire collection can never be on view at the same time\, collections are carefully stored and cared for in rooms such as our Neutrogena Vault\, which visitors can view from the Treasure Chest gallery. \nVisitors are invited to think about folk art. In fact\, there is no one definition of folk art. In collecting and displaying folk art\, the museum considers various concepts: Folk art is traditional art\, reflecting shared cultural aesthetics\, community values\, priorities\, and social issues. Folk art may change over time and include innovations in traditions. Folk art is handmade\, although it may include new\, synthetic\, or recycled components. Folk art may constitute income and empowerment for an individual\, a family\, or a community. Folk art may be art of the everyday or reserved for special occasions. Folk art may be learned formally or informally\, from family or other artists. Folk art may be intangible\, including various forms of expressive culture like dance\, song\, poetry\, and food ways. Folk art is of\, by\, and for the people. We mean all people\, inclusive of class\, culture\, community\, ethnicity\, and religion. Together\, we can consider the multitude of perspectives and come closer to understanding “What is Folk Art?” \nRotating thematic displays will offer close-up views of the museum’s folk art collection. In collaboration with the New Mexico History Museum’s exhibition Syria: Cultural Patrimony Under Threat\, opening June 23\, 2017;   MOIFA’s display of Syrian folk art opened June 4\, 2017. Hands on activities appropriate for ages 3 to 103 in the gallery include: coloring activities\, origami and a Javanese musical instrument.  The cultural context of folk art can be explored with a map\, book area. The notion that Folk Art may be intangible is explored with a musical instrument: a gender\, a gamelan instrument The re-opening brings back some old favorites from past exhibitions\, including “Last of the Red Hot Lovers”\, an American sculpture made from recycled metal by artist Dwight Martinek (aka “Wild Willie”)\, “The Followers of Ghandi” by renowned Master Folk artists Nek Chand\, and a Wedding Rickshaw from Bangladesh. \n

SUMMARY:Artistic Heritage: Syrian Folk Art A new display in Lloyd’s Treasure Chest
DESCRIPTION:Since 2011\, Syria has been plagued by conflict and civil war leading to a current humanitarian crisis. All over the news\, we see images of devastated ruins of what were once thriving cities and cultural centers such as Aleppo\, Homs\, Kobane\, and others; images and stories of unfathomable human suffering. But this is not the only side of Syria. Pointing to the country’s artistic traditions and cultural and religious diversity\, the Museum of International Folk Art will display and highlight its collection of Syrian folk art in Lloyd’s Treasure Chest. \nLloyd’s Treasure Chest is named for the gallery’s benefactor\, the late Lloyd Cotsen\, former CEO of the Neutrogena Corporation. In 1995\, Cotsen and the Neutrogena Corporation donated the Neutrogena Gallery\, Lloyd’s Treasure Chest\, a state-of-the-art storage facility\, and an important collection of international folk art. Lloyd’s Treasure Chest is an open storage concept gallery that allows visitors to view collections objects that are not on view in the museum’s formal exhibitions. In addition to the gallery being a place where visitors can explore the meaning of folk art\, collections items are rotated from storage into thematic displays set in the Treasure Chest. \nThis thematic display\, Artistic Heritage: Syrian Folk Art is presented in collaboration with the New Mexico History Museum their upcoming exhibition\, Syria: Cultural Patrimony under Threat\, opening June 23\, 2017.  June 4 is the first Sunday of the month\, admission is free for New Mexico residents;  youth 16 and under and members of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation are always free!

DESCRIPTION:Lines of Thought: Drawing from Michelangelo to Now examines the many ways artists have used drawing as a means of recording and provoking thought from the fifteenth century to today. \nThe internationally recognized line-up of artists featured in the exhibition is a ‘who’s who’ of artists through the centuries. The exhibition includes work by artists as diverse as Leonardo da Vinci\, Michelangelo\, Albrecht Dürer\, Piet Mondrian\, Paul Cézanne\, Pablo Picasso\, Bridget Riley\, Barbara Hepworth\, Henry Moore\, Franz Kline and Rachel Whiteread. \nCombining work from master artists of the past with artists working today\, clearly demonstrates the common thread of drawing as the basis for creation. Drawing is one of the most effective mediums for the immediate expression and representation of an artist’s ideas. Drawing often serves as the starting point for other creative arts including painting\, sculpture\, even basic engineering design and architecture. The exhibition will help visitors to explore the range inherent in the medium of drawing and may even inspire them to draw as well.
