We matched eight honors students each with one of our cedar benches\, and they painted different plants that were important to survival for the Indigenous people interred at the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. Through this trail you can learn about how nature influenced the history of this important place\, and you will get to see and imagine the trees and plants that were considered gifts of beauty and survival from the Creator for the Diné (Navajo) and the Ndé (Mescalero Apache). Florence D. Bartlett\, Clara Hoover\, and Elma Pratt are three of these American women whose lives intersected and whose legacies are now evidenced through museum and archival collections. These women were explorers of the social and intellectual life of their era; and through the catalysts of art and culture\, travel\, and education\, they enhanced social change. \nNicole Cardassilaris\, educator and humanities scholar\, draws relationships between the lives of these three women but will focus on a history of Elma Pratt’s life and work. Elma Pratt (1888-1977) educator\, collector\, artist\, and philanthropist spent much of her life organizing and managing her innovative International School of Art in Europe and the Americas. Pratt acquired a notable 2\,500-piece collection of international folk art\, which she gave to Miami University in Oxford\, Ohio in 1970. He recycles paper\, artistic conventions\, and his self-proclaimed neuroses in an effort to order and reassemble his world. Phelps’ work is made of recycled papers\, from hymnals\, encyclopedias\, menus\, beer cartons\, magazines\, food labels\, security envelope liners or junk mail\, ephemera re-pulped and repurposed into dynamic sculptures. His papier-machéand papier-collé sculptures draw on the traditional Mexican arts of Cartoneria and Piñata as well as other paper traditions from across the world\, but incorporate an ever-changing array of materials\, references\, and characters\, drawing on Pop\, Punk\, Folk\, Funk\, and other vernacular traditions. Free with admission. \nAbout Cara: \nCara Romero is a fine art photographer and an enrolled member of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe\, Romero was raised between contrasting settings: the rural Chemehuevi reservation in California’s Mojave Desert\, and the urban sprawl of Houston\, TX. Romero’s identity informs her photography\, a blend of fine art and editorial photography\, shaped by years of study and a visceral approach to representing Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultural memory\, collective history\, and lived experiences from a Native American female perspective. \nAs an undergraduate at the University of Houston\, Romero pursued a degree in cultural anthropology. Disillusioned\, however\, by academic and media portrayals of Native Americans as bygone\, Romero realized that making photographs could do more than anthropology did in words\, a realization that led to a shift in medium. Since 1998\, Romero’s expansive body of work has been informed by formal training in film\, digital\, fine art and commercial photography. By staging theatrical compositions infused with dramatic color\, Romero takes on the role of storyteller\, using contemporary photography techniques to depict the modernity of Native peoples\, illuminating Indigenous worldviews and aspects of supernaturalism in everyday life. \nMaintaining a studio in Santa Fe\, NM\, Romero regularly participates in Native American art fairs including Santa Fe’s annual Indian Market. Her award-winning work is included in many public and private collections internationally. Married with three children\, she travels between Santa Fe and the Chemehuevi Valley Indian Reservation\, where she maintains close ties to her tribal community and ancestral homelands.  Her photographs explore collective Native histories\, and the ways in which indigeneity expresses itself in modern times. The influence of New Mexico on the history of the horse in the Americas is both fascinating and profound. From the pre-historic ancestors of the horse found here millions of years ago\, the first horse breeding and racing in the Americas\, the introduction of the horse to Native Americans and the subsequent development of some of the greatest horse cultures in history\, New Mexico is arguably the most significant state when it comes to the history of the horse in the U.S.   \nA horse lover since birth\, Cynthia Culbertson is proud to have served as a consultant for multiple museum exhibitions featuring horses. She served as co-curator of an exhibition at the International Museum of the Horse featuring artifacts from 27 museums around the world\, including such prestigious institutions as the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has also served as a consultant for the equine components of many other projects\, including a UNESCO World Heritage museum. Cynthia is the author of several books on the subject of Arabian horses and is a regular contributor to international equine media. The god Xólotl (pronounced Sho-lotel) is the brother of Quetzalcóatl\, and was charged with guarding the sun as it passed through the underworld. It is said that he helped Quetzalcóatl in the creation of humankind. One of his defining qualities is his ability to transform into other figures\, animals or objects.
