SUMMARY:Quilts of Southwest China
DESCRIPTION:In southwest China\, traditional bed coverings\, clothing\, and household items have long been made from patched and appliqued scraps to create artistic and functional textiles. A bi-national consortium of American and Chinese museums has worked together to document and research these quilts\, an art form little known outside certain ethnic minority communities. Although the making and using of these quilts have declined\, a surge of renewed interest among scholars\, artists\, and locals is leading to growing efforts to study the textiles and the skills needed to continue making them. \nDownload coloring pages from this exhibition. \n  \nThis exhibit is sponsored by The Henry Luce Foundation. Additional support comes from the International Folk Art Foundation; the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and donors to the Exhibitions Development Fund; and the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation. Project partners include Yunnan Nationalities Museum (Kunming\, Yunnan\, China); Anthropology Museum of Guangxi (Nanning\, Guangxi\, China); Guizhou Nationalities Museum (Guiyang\, Guizhou\, China); Michigan State University Museum (East Lansing\, Michigan\, USA); Mathers Museum of World Cultures\, Indiana University (Bloomington\, Indiana\, USA); the International Quilt Study Center and Museum\, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Lincoln\, Nebraska\, USA); the American Folklore Society; and the Chinese Folklore Society.

SUMMARY:Brainpower & Brownbags Chasing the Cure in New Mexico: The ‘Lungers’ and Their Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Thousands of health seekers journeyed to New Mexico from 1880 to 1940\, hoping its high and dry climate would heal their diseased lungs.  This presentation describes the experience of these “lungers\,” many of whom stayed to make remarkable contributions to their adopted home.  Ultimately this movement helped transform a territory into a state and laid the foundation for its current health care system—both of which are examined in this illustrated presentation

SUMMARY:Syria: Cultural Patrimony Under Threat
DESCRIPTION:As Syria’s ongoing civil war\, staggering death toll\, and displacement of thousands of refugees threatens to destroy Syrian culture\, the Palace of the Governors will display seven albums of photographs of historic sites in Syria taken between 1899 and 1909. Entitled Syria: Cultural Patrimony Under Threat\, the exhibition will includes a multi-functional information kiosk with insights into Syrian people and culture. \nPartnering with Curators Without Borders\, a non-profit that specializes in innovative museum collaborations for humanitarian response\, the exhibition highlights the vast collection of albumen prints\, showing not only the historic sites now destroyed in Syria\, but representations of its people in adjacent collections within the Photo Archives. \nAs New Mexico has been the home to many diverse groups through its millennia who sought refuge from social\, political\, ethnic and religious strife\, it continues to welcome most recently Syrian refugee families who are escaping the terrors of life in Syria today. The principal message of the exhibition is one of shared concern\, empathy\, unity\, and support for those suffering amid diaspora. \n

SUMMARY:Zia Agricultural Fields
DESCRIPTION:The human ability to modify our landscape can be dramatic and even beautiful. A remarkable expression of this process can be seen in the development of extensive agricultural terraces and grid gardens in the hills above the Jemez River Valley on Zia Pueblo lands. \n \nUlysses Reid\, of Zia Pueblo\, will lead a strenuous morning hike of Jemez River Valley agricultural field terraces and requires the climbing of steep slopes over rugged terrain (2-3 hours\, round trip) near Zia Pueblo\, followed by lunch and an exhibition of arts and crafts at the Pueblo. A Friends of Archaeology group visited these features back in 2012\, and\, due to popular demand\, we are revisiting this trip. The cost of the trip is $85 for FOA members\, and $95 for non-FOA members. Spaces are limited. For more information or to make reservations\, call (505) 982-7799\, ext. 6 after 7am\, starting Tuesday\, April 30. \n \nUPDATE: Zia Pueblo will also have a crafts fair. Lunch will be provided by a family at Zia Pueblo. No risk of ceremonial conflict. Will be in upcoming newsletter. Limit will be 20. Biggest Challenge will be to provide a donation to the Youth group.  Sheri and Jerry C will review logistics from last program for snacks and stuff.

SUMMARY:Sombras del Pais
DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico Museum of Art will celebrate its 100 year anniversary in November of 2017. The St. Francis Auditorium was built as part of the Museum in order to provide the community and traveling visitors a place to enjoy music concerts\, lectures and theatrical performances. A traditional New Mexico church-like setting\, in a secular space\, the St. Francis Auditorium continues to be a gathering place for concerts\, lectures\, slide and video presentations\, literary events\, seminars\, and workshops. As we prepare to celebrate 100 years\, we are offering programming that represents a broad range of cultures and time periods. \nSombras del Pais (Shadows of the Country) will reintroduce audiences to a native son of New Mexico\, Felipe Delgado\, and his accompanist\, Anna Maude Van Hoose\, who were popular performers in the 1930s. In recreating programming performed by the duo\, audiences will enjoy popular music of the time\, as well as Spanish and New Mexican folk music. The program represents an instance in New Mexico’s multicultural history when Anglo and Hispanic audiences alike came together to hear these vibrant musical traditions. \nSombras del Pais\, a lecture-performance\, tells the story of the musical duo of Felipe Delgado (1899-1940) and Anna Maude Van Hoose (1884-1960)\, who toured the Southwest throughout the 1930s\, performing the music of Spain\, Mexico\, New Mexico\, Argentina and California\, all sung in Spanish.  Delgado\, a native of Las Vegas\, New Mexico\, had made a name for himself in Hollywood and in radio as the featured soloist in a nationally broadcast radio program\, Media Hora Espanola\, when he began performing with pianist Van Hoose. The duo performed throughout the Southwest\, including three recitals at the St. Francis Auditorium of the New Mexico Museum of Art. \nTheir musical collaboration was successful in part because of the times in which they lived. Hollywood in the twenties had popularized Spanish-speaking stars\, Spanish-influenced music\, and Spanish-language films\, and this popularity continued into the thirties. Delgado’s radio success was an outgrowth of this phenomenon. \nAdditionally\, the audience will hear music performed in the very same space\, St. Francis Auditorium\, as those ‘30s concerts. By the end of the performance\, they will have a sense of the remarkable music that no doubt helped people cope with the challenges of the Great Depression. \n$10 admission\, VIP $20. Tickets at the door\, cash or checks only.
