SUMMARY:Archaeology Lecture with Coronado Ranger Ethan Ortega "Could Hewett Have Been Wrong?"
DESCRIPTION:The history of the ancient village of Kuaua has been interpreted at Coronado Historic Site in Bernalillo\, New Mexico for over 75 years. Could it be possible that the original anthropological interpretations of the site were politically and socially influenced during its formation as New Mexico’s first state monument?  With the help of a few dozen volunteers we have inventoried and collected information on approximately 50\,000 objects and 2\,000 pages of field notes from the 1930s excavations. Utilizing GIS\, Ortega has georeferenced much of this data\, and virtually reconstructed what archaeologists found. New insights have been revealed involving day-to-day life\, cultural identity\, interactions with local colonists\, dates of occupation\, as well as a new ceramic type. This research continues to change the way we interpret Kuaua fundamentally.

SUMMARY:Lincoln After Dark
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 4th and final installment of our Lincoln After Dark tours for the season on July 21st! \nTours will start at 7pm\, 8pm\, and 9pm. The 7pm tour will be led by author\, historan\, and T.V. personality Drew Gomber and costs $15 per person. The 8pm and 9pm tours are $5 per person.  \nThe history of Lincoln\, New Mexico is mired with acts of revenge\, tragic accidents\, vigilante justice\, and senseless violence. Between 1870 and 1886\, more than fifty people met a violent end along this quarter-mile long stretch of dusty road. This fact led President Rutherford B. Hayes to declare Lincoln’s main thoroughfare as “The Most Dangerous Street in America.” Hundreds more were killed throughout the region during a time when feuds were most often settled at gunpoint\, lawmen were oftentimes involved with the criminals they swore to apprehend\, and danger lurked around every one of life’s corners. \nPlease call 575-653-4025 to reserve your tickets. Space is limited so please call to RSVP.

SUMMARY:Opening of Quilts of Southwest China
DESCRIPTION:Chinese quilts have received little attention from scholars\, collectors\, or museums.  The examples featured here offer an introduction based on new research by a bi-national consortium of American and Chinese museums\, including participation by the Museum of International Folk Art.  Embodying layers of history\, identity\, and expertise\, these quilts reveal new insights into the contemporary lives of minority communities adapting to a period of great change in China. \nIn southwest China\, traditional bed coverings\, clothing\, and household items have long been made from patched and appliqued scraps to create artistic and functional textiles. A bi-national consortium of American and Chinese museums has worked together to document and research these quilts\, an art form little known outside certain ethnic minority communities. Although the making and using of these quilts have declined\, a surge of renewed interest among scholars\, artists\, and locals is leading to growing efforts to study the textiles and the skills needed to continue making them. \nFREE ADMISSION is sponsored by the Sangre de Cristo Needlepointers. \nThis exhibit is sponsored by The Henry Luce Foundation. Additional support comes from the International Folk Art Foundation; the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and donors to the Exhibitions Development Fund; and the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation. Project partners include Yunnan Nationalities Museum (Kunming\, Yunnan\, China); Anthropology Museum of Guangxi (Nanning\, Guangxi\, China); Guizhou Nationalities Museum (Guiyang\, Guizhou\, China); Michigan State University Museum (East Lansing\, Michigan\, USA); Mathers Museum of World Cultures\, Indiana University (Bloomington\, Indiana\, USA); the International Quilt Study Center and Museum\, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Lincoln\, Nebraska\, USA); the American Folklore Society; and the Chinese Folklore Society.

SUMMARY:Brainpower & Brownbags Chasing the Cure in New Mexico: The ‘Lungers’ and Their Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Thousands of health seekers journeyed to New Mexico from 1880 to 1940\, hoping its high and dry climate would heal their diseased lungs.  This presentation describes the experience of these “lungers\,” many of whom stayed to make remarkable contributions to their adopted home.  Ultimately this movement helped transform a territory into a state and laid the foundation for its current health care system—both of which are examined in this illustrated presentation
