SUMMARY:Pueblo Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for our 14th annual commemoration of Pueblo Independence Day. On August 10\, 1680—the Pueblo People of New Mexico—aided by Apache and Navajo allies—launched a successful rebellion against Spanish colonization. Commemorative activities will begin with a pilgrimage run from Walatowa plaza in Jemez Pueblo to Giusewa Pueblo kiva at Jemez Historic Site (approximately a half marathon or 13 miles). Participating in this run\, or supporting a runner\, is a way to pay tribute to the Ancestors and show appreciation for the sacrifices they made. Their brave resistance helped preserve the Pueblo way of life: our culture\, our languages and our right to one day reclaim our aboriginal lands. The run begins at 7:00 AM\, and the general public is welcome to participate. Volunteers will provide water stations at one mile intervals\, and a shuttle service for slow runners will be available. At 10:00 AM\, guest speakers will welcome all the runners and their sponsors to the site. The following festivities\, between 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM\, will feature: Jemez traditional dances and Native American flute music. There will also be authentic Native arts & crafts and Native food. There is no admission fee for any of the activities related to this event. Call 575-829-3530 for more information. \n

SUMMARY:My journey with Nanao Sakaki Gallery talk by John Brandi
DESCRIPTION:Join the New Mexico History Museum every second Saturday of the month from June-February for a presentation and conversation-style gallery talk in conjunction with the current exhibit\, Voices of Counterculture in the Southwest. \nJohn Brandi shares the history of his friendship with Japanese poet Nanao Sakaki. Good friends with Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsberg\, Sakaki was encouraged by them to travel to the US\, and in 1971 he was drawn to northern New Mexico where he ended up living in a school bus below Taos Mountain. Sakaki’s poetry is marked by humor and appreciation for a simple lifestyle\, the embodiment of unconventional wisdom and spirited non-conformism. Brandi\, founder of Tooth of Time Books\, published Sakaki’s first major collection poetry\, “Real Play” and will speak about Sakaki’s poetry and role as a countercultural literary icon.  \n

SUMMARY:Local Coloring Opening Reception/Book Release
DESCRIPTION:Axle Contemporary contacted five New Mexico-based creative writers\, and asked each one to compose a short\, image-rich story for the project. What resulted are wonderful stories with a variety of styles and cultural references\, both local and universal. When the stories were complete\, they invited a group of artists\, known for their drawing ability\, to make coloring book style line drawing illustrations based on the stories. Later they had an open call to any New Mexican to contribute a drawing. Local Coloring is a coloring book with stories and an exhibition of drawings by sixty-seven of New Mexico’s rich trove of contemporary artists.

SUMMARY:Suspension of Belief: Why I Don’t Believe Mesa Verde became Tewa Brown Bag Talk
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Eric Blinman will present a lecture on his theory countering the current idea that the modern Tewa-speaking people migrated\, en masse\, from the Mesa Verde region of Colorado. \nEric states: \nArchaeology proceeds by the proposal and then testing of ideas. The most influential idea of the past decade has been the model formulated by Dr. Scott Ortman that “Tewa origins lay in a massive migration from the Mesa Verde region.” From inception of this model through today\, OAS archaeologists have been a skeptical minority within the discipline. This talk outlines the basis for our disbelief. \nThe Brown Bag talks will take place at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology at 12:00 noon in the CNMA library. Seating is limited. Admission is free. \nThe Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road\, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road\, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like skylights on the roof.

In archaeology\, the use of practice theory\, to reconstruct the communities of practice which created the material culture of the prehistoric societies being studied\, has become a means of investigating social identity. \nChupadero Black-on-white\, produced in central and southeast New Mexico\, was possibly the longest lived of all the Black-on-white wares\, manufactured from AD 1050/1100 to 1550 and extensively exchanged. Yet for all of its longevity and ubiquity in the Southwest\, the design style\, based on rim morphology and painted decoration remain constant. In this research\, Natker conducted an attribute analysis of the decorative design and technological style of Chupadero in order to assess to what degree\, if any\, change in style occurs. He explored the areal dimensions of this long term production and the long distance exchange of Chupadero Black-on-white and shares the implications for the communities of practice and the agency of the people who produced Chupadero starting in the late Pueblo II period. Finally\, he discusses the implications of the kinship-mode of production of this ware in the context of exchange in the greater Southwest.

SUMMARY:August 4 - $5 First Friday Focus on The Great American Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:(Albuquerque\, NM) — On August 4\, get ready for The Great American Eclipse at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS) during $5 First Friday. On Monday\, August 21\, an eclipse of the sun can be seen across the entire United States. For most of the country\, including New Mexico\, the eclipse will be partial. This means only part of the sun’s surface will be blocked by the moon and there will be no point during which it will be safe to look at the sun without proper eye protection. The only place where it will be safe to view the sun directly will be a relatively narrow path from Oregon to South Carolina\, and then only for a little over two minutes while the sun is totally eclipsed. \n“We want New Mexico residents to learn about this solar eclipse and find out how to enjoy it safely\,” said Jim Greenhouse\, NMMNHS’s Space Science Director. The Museum is focusing on this exciting sky event during the next $5 First Friday happening on August 4 from 5:30-9 p.m. Displays will show how to make an assortment of solar viewers. Video and graphic presentations will explain this eclipse of the sun. This is just a preview of the August 21 eclipse; there will be no eclipse during $5 First Friday.  In addition to these activities\, the whole Museum will be open for just $5 per person admission. \n“We have an impressive lineup of attractions happening which will make this a can’t-miss evening\,” commented Museum Director\, Margie Marino. “Admission also includes access to our popular temporary exhibition Wild Music: Songs & Sounds of Nature – a highly interactive exhibition which explores evidence for the biological origins of music.” Through environmental soundscapes\, exhibits\, and listening experiences\, visitors are invited to explore nature’s score and expand their understanding of what makes music. \nThe DynaTheater will be showing its newest film\, Space Next\, for an additional $5 at 6 p.m.  Space Next offers a glimpse into tomorrow\, and the possibilities of what is to come by way of private space developments and national space programs. The result is a mesmerizing display of interplanetary excellence sure to inspire a generation of explorers\, scientists\, and dreamers. \nThe planetarium will present Fractal Friday at the usual times of 6\, 7\, 8\, and 9 p.m. with the normal admission of adults $10\, seniors $7\, and children (3-12) $5. Shows typically sell out in advance\, so get your tickets early on brownpapertickets.com. \nMembers of the Albuquerque Astronomical Society will be helping to locate objects in the night sky in the observatory\, weather permitting\, starting at 8:30 p.m. The Nature Works store will be selling eclipse glasses and other unique gifts from 5:30-8 p.m. on this First Friday. SUMMARY:Brainpower & Brownbags The Swastika in New Mexico Culture and History
DESCRIPTION:Long before a detested dictator commandeered the swastika as a symbol of hate and war\, the ancient image had special meaning as a symbol of harmony in many cultures\, including among Native Americans in New Mexico. This presentation will review the swastika’s meaning in Native American culture\, including its use in arts and crafts\, and as the name of the New Mexico State University yearbook from the early 20th century through World War II.  It finally was abandoned in a storm of controversy in the early 1980s.

SUMMARY:Archaeology Lecture with Chris Crews Hunter-Gatherers of North-Central New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will cover research into the hunter-gatherers who occupied the Piedra Lumbre Valley\, Rio Arriba County. Three sites on Ghost Ranch property that have occupation spanning 6\,500 BCE to historic times will be discussed and compared. Stone tools and animal remains tell about the hunting techniques used which differ by site. Botanical\, charcoal\, and pollen analyses provide evidence on the seasons and plants used. Hearth features show punctuated changes in who lived there and when. \nThese topics will be synthesized to paint a picture of what life would have been like for a hunter-gatherer in north-central New Mexico.

SUMMARY:Archaeology Lecture with Coronado Ranger Ethan Ortega "Could Hewett Have Been Wrong?"
DESCRIPTION:The history of the ancient village of Kuaua has been interpreted at Coronado Historic Site in Bernalillo\, New Mexico for over 75 years. Could it be possible that the original anthropological interpretations of the site were politically and socially influenced during its formation as New Mexico’s first state monument?  With the help of a few dozen volunteers we have inventoried and collected information on approximately 50\,000 objects and 2\,000 pages of field notes from the 1930s excavations. Utilizing GIS\, Ortega has georeferenced much of this data\, and virtually reconstructed what archaeologists found. New insights have been revealed involving day-to-day life\, cultural identity\, interactions with local colonists\, dates of occupation\, as well as a new ceramic type. This research continues to change the way we interpret Kuaua fundamentally.

SUMMARY:Lincoln After Dark
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 4th and final installment of our Lincoln After Dark tours for the season on July 21st! \nTours will start at 7pm\, 8pm\, and 9pm. The 7pm tour will be led by author\, historan\, and T.V. personality Drew Gomber and costs $15 per person. The 8pm and 9pm tours are $5 per person.  \nThe history of Lincoln\, New Mexico is mired with acts of revenge\, tragic accidents\, vigilante justice\, and senseless violence. Between 1870 and 1886\, more than fifty people met a violent end along this quarter-mile long stretch of dusty road. This fact led President Rutherford B. Hayes to declare Lincoln’s main thoroughfare as “The Most Dangerous Street in America.” Hundreds more were killed throughout the region during a time when feuds were most often settled at gunpoint\, lawmen were oftentimes involved with the criminals they swore to apprehend\, and danger lurked around every one of life’s corners. \nPlease call 575-653-4025 to reserve your tickets. Space is limited so please call to RSVP.
