No refunds will be made for trip cancellations after July 1\, 2017. \nAbout Khristaan Villela Khristaan D. Villela\, PhD is the Director of the Museum of International Folk Art\, Santa Fe\, NM. He specializes in the history of Pre-Columbian and Latin American art\, and on the reception of ancient American culture in the modern world. He has curated exhibitions at the Getty Research Institute\, Los Angeles\, the Miho Museum\, Kyoto\, Japan\, and the New Mexico History Museum\, Santa Fe. Most recently he was consulting curator for Miguel Covarrubias: Drawing a Cosmopolitan Line\, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum\, Santa Fe (2014). He is the author of Ancient Civilizations of the Americas: Man\, Nature\, and Spirit in Pre-Columbian Art (Miho Museum\, 2011); The Aztec Calendar Stone (with Mary Miller\, Getty Publications\, 2010); and Contemporary Mexican Architecture and Design (with Ellen Bradbury Reid and Logan Wagner\, Gibbs Smith Publications\, 2002). Khristaan grew up in a home filled with Mexican folk art and is an enthusiastic supporter of folk artists.                                                                    \nAbout Marina Aguirre Marina began her professional life as a banker but made a major career change to follow her passions of history and anthropology.  She has a master’s degree in Ethno History and is a Ph.D. candidate in History.  Her dissertation is “The roots of patronage in the religious celebrations of villages in Chiapas\, Mexico in the 16th & 17th centuries.” Based in Merida\, Yucatan\, Marina has led previous trips to Mexico City and to other areas of Mexico including Chiapas and Oaxaca for the past five years.  www.marinaaguirre.blogspot.com

SUMMARY:Stepping Out: 10\,000 Years of Walking the West
DESCRIPTION:Footwear is evocative. The shoe tells us if the wearer was a child or an adult\, and can often tell us whether they were an adult man or woman\, based on size and style. Shoes retain signs of the wearer\, showing imprints of toes and heels and repairs made as much-needed or much-loved footwear became ragged. They can also hint at health problems; for example\, bunions and uneven gaits can be visible on the shoes. \nHow we protect our feet is influenced by the environment (hot\, cold\, stony\, soft)\, the materials available (leather\, plants\, beads\, quills)\, and tradition. Tradition guides whether people wear sandals or leather footwear\, as well as how they decorate them\, but tradition varies over time as conditions\, environmental and social\, change. \nThe style of the shoe also tells us about belonging\, love\, and social aspiration. Beaded moccasins are time-consuming to make\, comfortable to wear\, and beautiful to behold. Moccasins created for a family member will often reflect the love and commitment of the maker toward the wearer. Some styles of moccasins or sandals were reserved for those with status\, wealth\, or a special role in society. Footwear reflects the lives of their makers and wearers\, offering a window into the past and the present. \nThis exhibition will feature sandals that date back thousands of years found in the dry caves of New Mexico and nearby regions. The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture has amassed a significant collection of Plains and Southwest moccasins\, many beautifully beaded or quilled\, and these will be exhibited for the first time in decades. The exhibition will conclude with examples of contemporary high fashion footwear made artists like Teri Greeves\, Lisa Telford\, and Emil Her Many Horses\, showing how traditional designs and techniques are now being used to create gorgeous\, meaningful shoes in the 21st Century. \nStepping Out: 10\,000 Years of Walking the West opens at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture on August 27\, 2017 and will be on exhibit through the end of 2018. \nCurator’s Statement by Maxine McBrinn\, PhD.

SUMMARY:Variation in Earth’s Magnetic Field Strength and Direction As Seen in the American Southwest Brown Bag Talk
DESCRIPTION:Shelby Jones-Cervantes will give a presentation on her current archaeomagnetic dating research and the methods behind this very important mode of dating archaeological material. Over the past six decades\, a number of scientists have devoted their careers to collecting and measuring the magnetic properties of archaeological burned sediments\, such as hearths\, bricks\, kilns\, and pottery. The resulting data show that the Earth’s magnetic field has varied significantly over the last 2\,000 years. This rich archaeomagnetic database is now being integrated into global models of the Earth’s field\, strengthening both the geophysical models and the archaeologists’ ability to use geomagnetic variation as a dating technique. \nThe Brown Bag talks will take place at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology at 12:00 noon in the CNMA library. Seating is limited. DESCRIPTION:Ulysses Reid of Zia Pueblo will demonstrate traditional Zia Pueblo pottery making and firing methods at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology (CNMA) beginning on Saturday\, August 19 at 9am. Ulysses will continue this two-day workshop on the following day\, Sunday\, August 20th. This is a free event and will certainly be popular so make sure to arrive early to secure a place at the demonstration site on the north end of the CNMA building. \nUlysses has partnered with the Office of Archaeological Studies on many occasions and most recently during the Zia Agricultural Fields trip for the Friends of Archaeology\, last month. Ulysses is a stickler for detail when creating his art and uses only traditional materials in his pottery making and his finished ceramic work is truly exceptional. DESCRIPTION:“On the Wing: The Avian Photography of Nirmala Khandan” is on display in the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum’s Arts Corridor through Dec. 3. \nKhandan began photographing birds in his native Sri Lanka before moving to Las Cruces 17 years ago. The drastic change in environment made his artistic journey challenging and fun. \n“Birds are unpredictable\,” he said. “It’s nice when you can capture an image with a clean background in their habitat. In this exhibit\, I have compiled portraits of a variety of birds photographed in their natural habitats here in New Mexico. While most of them are residents\, some are migrants. Others may be regularly spotted here\, but some (like the Great Kiskadee) are a rare sight in our area. \n“I hope viewers will appreciate the fascinating details of the birds\, as well as gaining some insight into their behavior and the way in which they interact in their habitat\,” he added. \nKhandan\, whose work features all types of nature and wildlife photography\, began sharing his images on social media and is excited to reach a wider audience. \nHis show includes 32 images that are beautifully colorful and display great detail. While his technical expertise and talent in composition are evident\, there’s much more to his work. He hopes to raise awareness of the importance of habitat. \n“I hope this exhibit will help raise awareness\, especially among younger generations\, about the diversity and beauty of local avian life\, and encourage the preservation of our ecosystem in the face of rapid urbanization\, climate change\, and habitat loss.”

SUMMARY:Traditional Hopi kachina carving presentation
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, August 17th\, Hopi kachina carvers from the Third Mesa village of Hotevilla will be giving a day-long demonstration at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology highlighting their traditional methods of carving. The carvers will give presentations on the types of materials they use\, the manner in which they collect their materials\, how they work\, and the symbolism and meaning behind their carvings. The presentation is free\, however\, seating is limited. \nThis is a full-day’s event dedicated entirely to kachina carving and guests are encouraged to watch and ask questions as these skilled artists create their one-of-a-kind art pieces. Each of the artists will be working from raw\, unfinished cottonwood root at the beginning of the process and at the end of the day they will have completed pieces\, entirely painted and decorated. This is a rare opportunity to see kachina carvers at work and for visitors to see the entire creative process unfold. \nThe carvers that are participating are Raynard Lalo (Spider Clan)\, Darance Chimerica (Fire Clan)\, and Eric Kayquaptewa (Spider Clan). \nRaynard Lalo and Eric Kayquaptewa have both won numerous awards at prestigious art shows across the country for their traditional kachina carvings and are featured artists in the August 2017 issue of Native American Art magazine\, the official magazine of the 2017 SWAIA Indian Market. Darance Chimerica is an award-winning traditional kachina carver and has traveled internationally to act as a representative of the Hopi Tribe to review museum collections and as a consultant for the proper care of their kachina carvings. \nThe Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road\, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. SUMMARY:Pueblo Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for our 14th annual commemoration of Pueblo Independence Day. On August 10\, 1680—the Pueblo People of New Mexico—aided by Apache and Navajo allies—launched a successful rebellion against Spanish colonization. Commemorative activities will begin with a pilgrimage run from Walatowa plaza in Jemez Pueblo to Giusewa Pueblo kiva at Jemez Historic Site (approximately a half marathon or 13 miles). Participating in this run\, or supporting a runner\, is a way to pay tribute to the Ancestors and show appreciation for the sacrifices they made. Their brave resistance helped preserve the Pueblo way of life: our culture\, our languages and our right to one day reclaim our aboriginal lands. The run begins at 7:00 AM\, and the general public is welcome to participate. Volunteers will provide water stations at one mile intervals\, and a shuttle service for slow runners will be available. At 10:00 AM\, guest speakers will welcome all the runners and their sponsors to the site. The following festivities\, between 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM\, will feature: Jemez traditional dances and Native American flute music. There will also be authentic Native arts & crafts and Native food. SUMMARY:My journey with Nanao Sakaki  Gallery talk by John Brandi
DESCRIPTION:Join the New Mexico History Museum every second Saturday of the month from June-February for a presentation and conversation-style gallery talk in conjunction with the current exhibit\, Voices of Counterculture in the Southwest. \nJohn Brandi shares the history of his friendship with Japanese poet Nanao Sakaki. Good friends with Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsberg\, Sakaki was encouraged by them to travel to the US\, and in 1971 he was drawn to northern New Mexico where he ended up living in a school bus below Taos Mountain. Sakaki’s poetry is marked by humor and appreciation for a simple lifestyle\, the embodiment of unconventional wisdom and spirited non-conformism. Brandi\, founder of Tooth of Time Books\, published Sakaki’s first major collection poetry\, “Real Play” and will speak about Sakaki’s poetry and role as a countercultural literary icon.  \n

SUMMARY:Local Coloring Opening Reception/Book Release
DESCRIPTION:Axle Contemporary contacted five New Mexico-based creative writers\, and asked each one to compose a short\, image-rich story for the project. What resulted are wonderful stories with a variety of styles and cultural references\, both local and universal. When the stories were complete\, they invited a group of artists\, known for their drawing ability\, to make coloring book style line drawing illustrations based on the stories. Later they had an open call to any New Mexican to contribute a drawing. Local Coloring is a coloring book with stories and an exhibition of drawings by sixty-seven of New Mexico’s rich trove of contemporary artists.
