SUMMARY:Cooking Jar Technology in the Ancient Southwest Brown Bag Talk
DESCRIPTION:Despite nearly 4\,000 years of ceramic technology in the Southwest\, the common use of pottery for cooking only dates within the past 2\,000 years. The history of innovation in cooking jar design is fairly sophisticated\, starting with the simplest of forms and clay-temper combinations and ending with the use of micaceous clay for the ultimate bean pot. Dr. Eric Blinman (OAS’ director) will give a presentation on the technological developments that allowed ceramics to become the primary tool for cooking and food preparation in the prehistoric American Southwest. \nPlease check back on this website for updates. \nThe Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road\, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road\, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like skylights on the roof.

Sponsored by New Mexico Historic Sites\, the 2nd Annual Los Luceros Fall  Festival is scheduled for Sunday\, September 17\, 2017 from 10:00AM to 4:00PM.   \nNew Mexicans are encouraged to bring the whole family for a fun afternoon in Alcalde. The Fall Apple Festival includes an educational presentation on heritage apples\, demonstrations of apple cooking ideas with take home recipes\, a cider pressing demonstration\, live music\, and tours of Casa Grande and other historic buildings. \nThere will also be an exhibition space for area agricultural groups offering resources including the FFA\, 4HA and extension office. The festival will be held at Casa Grande\, the Los Luceros historic property located off State Route 68 in Alcalde\, New Mexico. \nIn a state blessed with numerous cultural gems\, the 148-acre Los Luceros ranch located north of Española along the Rio Grande near the village of Alcalde is special. The cultural site is surely one of New Mexico’s most scenic and historically significant properties.  \nThe centerpiece of the historic Los Luceros ranch complex is Casa Grande\, a 5\,700 square-foot\, 18th century Territorial-style adobe home\, which was renovated by the Cabot Foundation in 2004 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property also includes a visitor’s center\, director’s residence and a small gallery. In addition to the hacienda and the visitor center complex\, the property contains three residences\, an 18th century chapel\, the original village jail\, numerous farm buildings\, apple orchards\, irrigated pasture and bosque on the Rio Grande. \nThe New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs\, which purchased the Los Luceros property from the family of Frank and Ann Cabot in 2008\, is the state’s cultural steward and is working to ensure the site’s preservation and integrity in perpetuity.

SUMMARY:Comanche Gap
DESCRIPTION:More formally known as “The Creston\,” a prominent volcanic dike forms a curtain across the landscape in the southwestern portion of the Galisteo Basin. Famous in the pantheon of great New Mexico rock art locations\, the south face of the top of The Creston is the canvas for a remarkable array of pecked images\, most dating from the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries and perhaps later. Warrior imagery is particularly abundant\, but the range is wide and covers most of the iconic symbolism of the Galisteo Basin as a whole. FOA has received permission to lead tours of the portion of The Creston on San Cristobal Ranch on Sunday\, Sept. 17. This will include an opportunity to see the most famous of the Comanche Gap images. We will offer multiple\, small (12 person) tours throughout the day\, beginning at 8 a.m.\, with additional tours at 90-minute intervals. This is the most rugged trip offered by FOA. The elevation gain is equivalent to rapidly climbing 20 flights of stairs with large steps and very uneven\, and occasionally unstable\, footing. The tour can take up to three hours\, and everyone will need to carry their own water and whatever weather gear is necessary. At an elevation of 6500 feet\, visitors from lower elevations should be prepared to move slowly. This tour is not recommended for anyone with heart\, breathing\, or agility problems. (We were forced to remove several participants from the tour\, for their own and others’ safety\, the last time we offered it.) \nCost will be $60 for FOA members and $75 for non-members. Lunch will not be included. Bring snacks to keep yourself fueled. Reservations open at 7:30 a.m.\, on June 20. Call the hotline at (505) 982-7799\, ext. 6\, and leave your call-back information. Tour times will be assigned on a first-called first-served basis.

SUMMARY:History Museum’s Photo Legacy Project Catalogs Gay Santa Fe Man’s Experience of Vietnam War
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 16 at 3:00 the New Mexico History Museum will present Letters Home from the Vietnam War: Herbert Lotz in conversation with Gregory Hinton in conjunction with the Lotz photography exhibit Sleeping During the Day: Vietnam 1968; in honor of Santa Fe Gay Pride weekend. \nThe evocative photographs Herbert Lotz exhibits in Sleeping During the Day offer a rare glimpse into the perspective of a gay soldier when homosexuals were forbidden to serve openly in the United States armed forces.  Also on display are personal letters home from the war\, which Lotz made available to historian Gregory Hinton in the planning stages of this exhibition. Following an overview of LGBTQ military service from Vietnam to present day\, Hinton will read excerpts from selected letters in conversation with Herb Lotz.  Hinton is a writer\, filmmaker\, and producer of Out West\, a national museum program series dedicated to shining a light on LGBTQ history and culture in the American West. \nThere is no shortage of photographs documenting the horrors of the Vietnam War. In fact\, between military photographers and the free press\, millions of photographs of the Vietnam conflict were taken between 1962 and 1975. But\, there are very few that document the war from the perspective of a young gay man serving in the United States Army. The New Mexico History Museum will display this unique perspective through the photographs of Santa Fean Herbert Lotz\, acquired through the museum’s Photo Legacy Project in 2008. The exhibition\, Sleeping During the Day: Vietnam 1968\, will run from April 7 to October 1\, 2017. \nAgainst the backdrop of the Vietnam war\, the photographs of Herbert Lotz humanize the men who served amidst the rising disillusionment that became the rallying point for the emerging counter-culture movement. As a gay man\, his perspective of life on an Army base was the same as any other soldier doing his job\, only Lotz documented it with his camera and poignant letters home. \nOf the exhibition\, Herbert Lotz says\, “I have wanted to show these photographs for some time\, I’m so grateful to the archives and history museum for the opportunity to show them.  It feels as if I can close a chapter of my work”. \nBorn and raised on a small farm town in Illinois\, Herbert Lotz was drafted in his third year at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he studied photography. He served as a radio operator in Vietnam in 1968 detached to the 25th Infantry Division at Cu Chi\, the experience of which was to affect him the rest of his life\, not unlike so many others of his generation. Lotz moved to Santa Fe in January 1970 unable to reenter his life in Chicago. Driving into Santa Fe from the north passing by the National Cemetery\, Lotz felt he had found his new home but still struggled to deal with his wartime experiences. Unlike contemporary society’s view of military veterans\, Vietnam vets were scorned and marginalized to the point most hid their service\, suffering in silence. In 1981\, Lotz finally came to terms with his experience and continues to work with the photographs he took in Vietnam. \n  \n \n### \n

SUMMARY:Public meeting: Community input sought for new art space
DESCRIPTION:The architectural team of DNCA + StudioGP of Albuquerque\, N.M. are the designers of the conversion of the former Halpin State Archives Center at 404 Montezuma Avenue into an annex of the museum focused on contemporary art. The project is the subject of a capital campaign by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation\, and the target for the building to open to visitors is sometime in 2020. Members of the museum staff and the architectural team will be on-hand to provide an overview of the project\, as well as to answer questions and hear ideas. “As the people’s museum\, it is important that we provide this opportunity for community input into the project at this early phase of planning\,” said museum director Mary Kershaw. “Our goal is that this will be one of the most inviting and inclusive art spaces anywhere\, and we don’t just want to rely on our own ideas on what that means.” Kershaw added that the architecture team is in their initial research phase of the project\, so this is the perfect time to begin a dialog with people from around Santa Fe and New Mexico. The event is free of charge. \nParking is available nearby at the City of Santa Fe’s Railyard parking garage\, and transit service is available to adjacent stops for both Santa Fe Trails transit and the New Mexico Rail Runner Express. The contemporary art space has been part of the museum’s strategic plan since 2015. The limited square footage of the nearly 100-year-old\, Pueblo Revival icon on the Santa Fe Plaza limits the museum’s capacity to display and store works from its collection of over 23\,000 works. The need for more space\, a goal to showcase more art being produced now\, as well as the emergence of the dynamic\, creative and walkable Santa Fe Railyard district combined to make the Halpin Building a logical location for the new art space. The Museum of New Mexico Foundation – an independent\, nonprofit organization that raises money for the state museum and historic site system – is undertaking a $10 million campaign to bring the new project to fruition. \nDNCA is no stranger to Santa Fe or the Railyard District in particular. They created the designs for such well-known Railyard buildings as the Rose Morelli Building\, the Sears-Hansen Building and the LewAllen Galleries\, all located near the Halpin building. Other DNCA projects include Second Street Brewery’s Rufina Street location in Santa Fe\, as well as Albuquerque’s Tamarind Institute at the University of New Mexico\, and the downtown headquarters of the digital fabrication firm Levitated Toy Factory. StudioGP’s portfolio includes the Canadian Human Rights Museum\, in Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, Canada\, the Cornerstone Art Center in Colorado Springs\, and Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library\, also in Colorado (those projects executed as senior associate for Antoine Predock).

SUMMARY:Santa Fe Fiesta History Forum
DESCRIPTION:Scheduled for Wednesday\, September 6 from 10:30AM – 4:30PM\, the event presentations offer a substantive look into various interpretations of New Mexico’s rich history. Presenters include Stephen Post\, an archaeologist and research associate and former deputy director for the Office of Archaeological Studies\, Department of Cultural Affairs. He is the co-curator of Santa Fe Found: Fragments of Time\, located in the west end of the Palace of the Governors. Post has been integrally involved in the Palace’s archaeology since 1978. The symposium will also feature a condensed version of the film Veiled Lightning by director Jaima Chevalier. This documentary explores the culture of protest in Native America and beyond—as seen through the lens of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. \nPhotographer Steven Katzman will discuss his project titled This Miserable Kingdom\, a photographic survey documenting government actions toward indigenous peoples\, with the primary focus on Pojoaque Pueblo located in Pojoaque\, New Mexico. Artist Virgil Ortiz who hails from Cochiti Pueblo will share insights into his provocative multimedia artistic approach to raise awareness of Pueblo culture\, including the ongoing cultural significance of the Pueblo Revolt and the Reconquest. This event will culminate in a community conversation about this history. All who attend may partake in this discussion. \n “All history must be approached from an assumption of complexity\,” said History Museum Executive Director Andrew Wulf. “Few geographical areas boast as complicated\, unresolved and ever-present reminders of such a history as New Mexico. Since First Contact in 1540\, all the various groups who called and would name New Mexico their home were forever changed through these interactions with one another. It is our intention to open the conversation from various viewpoints during Fiesta season.” \nSymposium Timeline: \n10:00 AM Auditorium doors open for seating \n10:30 AM Opening Address by NMHM Director\, Dr. Andrew Wulf \n10:45 AM -11:15AM: Presentation I by Stephen Post \n11:20 AM -12:00PM: Presentation II\, Film Screening of “Veiled Lightning” by director Jaima Chevalier \n12:00 Lunch Break \n1:15 PM Auditorium Doors Re-Open for seating \n1:30 PM-2:10PM: Presentation III by Steven Katzman \n2:15 PM-3:00PM: Presentation IV by Virgil Ortiz \n3:15 PM Community Discussion Begins with Norman Johnson\, Dr. Andrew Wulf\, Stephen Post\, Jaima Chevalier\, Steven Katzman\, Virgil Ortiz and community \n4:30 PM Closing Address by Dr. Andrew Wulf \n4:45 Symposium Concludes \n5:00 Museum Closure

Inti-Illimani will perform at the NHCC on the group’s 50th anniversary tour. \nFounded in 1967 by students at Santiago’s Universidad Técnica del Estado\, Inti-Illimani has performed worldwide for hundreds of thousands of fans\, collaborated with legendary artists\, earned awards and honors for activism as well as musicianship\, and produced one of Latin America’s richest discographies. On tour during the 1973 military coup in Chile\, they remained in Italy in de facto exile until 1988\, touring Chile days after they were no longer banned from the country and returning permanently in 1990. The time in Europe added elements of other musical genres to their music\, creating a fusion of folk/Latin/contemporary classical/avant-garde/world music played on over 30 instruments. They have lectured extensively on Latin American folk/indigenous music\, culture\, and social change\, and founded and teach at an arts-centric school in one of Santiago’s poorest neighborhoods. \nStill including one of the original founders\, the group now celebrates 50 years of performing music grounded in their beloved Chile\, yet continuing to reach across time\, space\, and nations. More than a musical ensemble\, they have become a cultural location\, expressing the essence of the Latin American ethnomusical experience. Their current tour also promotes an album recorded in homage to the legendary Violeta Parra for her centenary. \nFestival Chispa Presents is a partnership with Avokado Artists that showcases some of the finest and most innovative groups\, both legendary and up-and-coming\, that the Latino world has to offer. Fusing various musical genres\, cultures\, and traditions\, this dynamic series breaks down musical boundaries and leaves the audience wanting more! \nAvokado Artists\, a non-profit arts organization\, is dedicated to cross-cultural understanding through art and the cultivation\, promotion\, presentation and preservation of culturally significant artists and their work from around the globe.

SUMMARY:The Early Pueblo Occupation of the Dinetah Region Brown Bag Talk
DESCRIPTION:The traditional picture of early Pueblo history (pre-AD 900) has been broadly recreated by archaeological research in the Four Corners region. The early Pueblo history in the greater Dinetah region does not conform to this model in ways that are important for understanding the cultural diversity of modern Pueblo peoples. This bag lunch is background for the upcoming Friends of Archaeology field trip\, set for October 6-8\, to view Pueblo I and Navajo archaeology of the Dinetah region. \nThe Brown Bag talks will take place at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology at 12:00 noon on Tuesdays in the CNMA library. Seating is limited. Admission is free.
