SUMMARY:A Mexican Century Prints from the Taller de Gráfica Popular
DESCRIPTION:Following the Mexican Revolution\, artists came to see the ancient and folk art of Mexico in new light. Building on the foundation of their predecessors Jose Guadalupe Posada and Manuel Manilla\, the new generation printmakers of the Taller de Gráfica Popular\, or “People’s Graphic Workshop\,” used their craft to promote the “progressive and democratic interests of the Mexican people\, especially in the fight against fascist reaction.” The main products of their presses were posters\, portfolios\, fine prints\, handbills and even children’s books – printed in woodcut\, linoleum and lithography.

SUMMARY:Into the Dinetah Labyrinth: Exploring Pueblo I and Navajo Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:Most archaeological enthusiasts venture north along US 550 on their way to explore the Ancestral Pueblo world\, and most turn to the west\, conscious only of the Great Houses of Chaco Canyon\, Salmon Ruins\, and Aztec Ruins. Few travelers turn to the east and take the less traveled path into the Dinetah\, known best as the traditional homeland of the Navajo. The labyrinth of canyons\, mesas\, and dirt roads characterizing this region can be intimidating\, and this sentiment may have extended deep into the past. In addition to the better known Navajo presence\, the region was the home to a strong early Puebloan population\, but the Chaco people did not seem to venture much east of the Great North Road. Why? \nThe Dinetah extends from Aztec in the north to Dulce in the south and is sandwiched roughly between US 64 on the east and US 550 on the west. The majority of the region is administered by the Bureau of Land Management and the Dinetah may be the richest federal archaeological land holding in the United States\, however\, the archaeological sites are subtle\, not developed for the visiting public\, and effectively unknown to most of the world. Hiking is not strenuous but some rock climbing will be involved. High clearance vehicles are recommended; we will be carpooling to all of the sites. \nSpaces are limited. To reserve your place for this event call (505) 982-7799\, ext. 7 after 7am starting Tuesday\, August 29. The cost of the trip is $255 for FOA members and $290 for non-FOA members.

SUMMARY:Tom Lea & H.P. Mera at the Laboratory of Anthropology Documenting Pueblo Designs in the 1930s
DESCRIPTION:This Free First Sunday program is offered in collaboration with the Tom Lea Institute (El Paso\, TX) during its annual Tom Lea Month. \nLea spent almost three years in Santa Fe\, and the surrounding area\, in the early 1930s. One of his posts as a New Deal Works Progress Administration (WPA) artist was at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Laboratory of Anthropology\, where he painted several hundred designs from half of the current extant Pueblos’ pottery collected through the Indian Arts Fund. H.P. Mera complemented the illustrations with short descriptions of the 10 Pueblos\, with a significant focus on Zuni’s “Rainbird Design” and its influence in nearby Pueblos. \nSpeakers include Kathy Flynn of the New Deal Preservation Association and Dody Fugate\, retired assistant curator at MIAC. \n

SUMMARY:Brainpower $ Brownbags “Chasing the Santa Fe Ring: Power and Privilege in Territorial New Mexico”
DESCRIPTION:“The Ring” was a political and business combination that dominated New Mexico during much of the last half of the nineteenth century. \nWhile its very existence has been disputed\, there is wide agreement among historians that the Ring was a dominant group of men who excelled at exercising political power to advance their own economic interests\, often at the expense of other people. \nMr. Caffey examines who participated and what they did to attract attention as figures in this storied\, often infamous\, chapter in New Mexico’s history.

SUMMARY:Cooking Jar Technology in the Ancient Southwest Brown Bag Talk
DESCRIPTION:Despite nearly 4\,000 years of ceramic technology in the Southwest\, the common use of pottery for cooking only dates within the past 2\,000 years. The history of innovation in cooking jar design is fairly sophisticated\, starting with the simplest of forms and clay-temper combinations and ending with the use of micaceous clay for the ultimate bean pot. Dr. Eric Blinman (OAS’ director) will give a presentation on the technological developments that allowed ceramics to become the primary tool for cooking and food preparation in the prehistoric American Southwest. \nPlease check back on this website for updates. \nThe Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road\, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road\, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like skylights on the roof.

SUMMARY:Los Luceros Fall Festival Set for September 17
DESCRIPTION:(Alcalde\, NM) – Set aside Sunday\, September 17 for a family fun day at the Fall  Festival at Los Luceros historic property in Alcade. The festival features demonstrations on heritage apple cooking\, cider pressing\, live music and tours of the property. Sponsored by New Mexico Historic Sites\, the 2nd Annual Los Luceros Fall  Festival is scheduled for Sunday\, September 17\, 2017 from 10:00AM to 4:00PM.   \nNew Mexicans are encouraged to bring the whole family for a fun afternoon in Alcalde. The Fall Apple Festival includes an educational presentation on heritage apples\, demonstrations of apple cooking ideas with take home recipes\, a cider pressing demonstration\, live music\, and tours of Casa Grande and other historic buildings. \nThere will also be an exhibition space for area agricultural groups offering resources including the FFA\, 4HA and extension office. The festival will be held at Casa Grande\, the Los Luceros historic property located off State Route 68 in Alcalde\, New Mexico. \nIn a state blessed with numerous cultural gems\, the 148-acre Los Luceros ranch located north of Española along the Rio Grande near the village of Alcalde is special. The cultural site is surely one of New Mexico’s most scenic and historically significant properties.  \nThe centerpiece of the historic Los Luceros ranch complex is Casa Grande\, a 5\,700 square-foot\, 18th century Territorial-style adobe home\, which was renovated by the Cabot Foundation in 2004 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property also includes a visitor’s center\, director’s residence and a small gallery. In addition to the hacienda and the visitor center complex\, the property contains three residences\, an 18th century chapel\, the original village jail\, numerous farm buildings\, apple orchards\, irrigated pasture and bosque on the Rio Grande. \nThe New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs\, which purchased the Los Luceros property from the family of Frank and Ann Cabot in 2008\, is the state’s cultural steward and is working to ensure the site’s preservation and integrity in perpetuity.

SUMMARY:Comanche Gap
DESCRIPTION:More formally known as “The Creston\,” a prominent volcanic dike forms a curtain across the landscape in the southwestern portion of the Galisteo Basin. Famous in the pantheon of great New Mexico rock art locations\, the south face of the top of The Creston is the canvas for a remarkable array of pecked images\, most dating from the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries and perhaps later. Warrior imagery is particularly abundant\, but the range is wide and covers most of the iconic symbolism of the Galisteo Basin as a whole. FOA has received permission to lead tours of the portion of The Creston on San Cristobal Ranch on Sunday\, Sept. 17. This will include an opportunity to see the most famous of the Comanche Gap images. We will offer multiple\, small (12 person) tours throughout the day\, beginning at 8 a.m.\, with additional tours at 90-minute intervals. This is the most rugged trip offered by FOA. The elevation gain is equivalent to rapidly climbing 20 flights of stairs with large steps and very uneven\, and occasionally unstable\, footing. The tour can take up to three hours\, and everyone will need to carry their own water and whatever weather gear is necessary. SUMMARY:History Museum’s Photo Legacy Project Catalogs Gay Santa Fe Man’s Experience of Vietnam War
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 16 at 3:00 the New Mexico History Museum will present Letters Home from the Vietnam War: Herbert Lotz in conversation with Gregory Hinton in conjunction with the Lotz photography exhibit Sleeping During the Day: Vietnam 1968; in honor of Santa Fe Gay Pride weekend. \nThe evocative photographs Herbert Lotz exhibits in Sleeping During the Day offer a rare glimpse into the perspective of a gay soldier when homosexuals were forbidden to serve openly in the United States armed forces.  Also on display are personal letters home from the war\, which Lotz made available to historian Gregory Hinton in the planning stages of this exhibition. Following an overview of LGBTQ military service from Vietnam to present day\, Hinton will read excerpts from selected letters in conversation with Herb Lotz.  Hinton is a writer\, filmmaker\, and producer of Out West\, a national museum program series dedicated to shining a light on LGBTQ history and culture in the American West. \nThere is no shortage of photographs documenting the horrors of the Vietnam War. In fact\, between military photographers and the free press\, millions of photographs of the Vietnam conflict were taken between 1962 and 1975. But\, there are very few that document the war from the perspective of a young gay man serving in the United States Army. The New Mexico History Museum will display this unique perspective through the photographs of Santa Fean Herbert Lotz\, acquired through the museum’s Photo Legacy Project in 2008. The exhibition\, Sleeping During the Day: Vietnam 1968\, will run from April 7 to October 1\, 2017. \nAgainst the backdrop of the Vietnam war\, the photographs of Herbert Lotz humanize the men who served amidst the rising disillusionment that became the rallying point for the emerging counter-culture movement. As a gay man\, his perspective of life on an Army base was the same as any other soldier doing his job\, only Lotz documented it with his camera and poignant letters home. \nOf the exhibition\, Herbert Lotz says\, “I have wanted to show these photographs for some time\, I’m so grateful to the archives and history museum for the opportunity to show them.  It feels as if I can close a chapter of my work”. \nBorn and raised on a small farm town in Illinois\, Herbert Lotz was drafted in his third year at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he studied photography. He served as a radio operator in Vietnam in 1968 detached to the 25th Infantry Division at Cu Chi\, the experience of which was to affect him the rest of his life\, not unlike so many others of his generation. Lotz moved to Santa Fe in January 1970 unable to reenter his life in Chicago. Driving into Santa Fe from the north passing by the National Cemetery\, Lotz felt he had found his new home but still struggled to deal with his wartime experiences. Unlike contemporary society’s view of military veterans\, Vietnam vets were scorned and marginalized to the point most hid their service\, suffering in silence. In 1981\, Lotz finally came to terms with his experience and continues to work with the photographs he took in Vietnam. \n  \n \n### \n
