SUMMARY:Ghhúunayúkata / To Keep Them Warm: The Alaska Native Parka
DESCRIPTION:These unique garments embody the remarkable creativity\, craftsmanship\, and innovation of their makers\, past and present. As complex cultural expressions\, parkas are at once innovative and traditional\, a garment that harmoniously marries artistry\, function\, cultural meaning\, and Indigenous ingenuity. \nAt the heart of the exhibition are 20 parkas representing 6 Alaska Native communities: Yup’ik\, Iñupiaq\, Unangan\, Dena’ina\, Koyukon\, and St. Lawrence Island Yupik. The selection includes parkas from the mid-19th century to contemporary reinterpretations of this iconic garment\, illustrating the continuing vitality of this art form. \nA rich selection of Indigenous drawings\, photographic portraits\, and traditional dolls will provide context for how parkas are worn in ceremony\, hunting\, and daily use. These works underscore Native self-representation and the parka’s importance as a cultural signifier. Sewing tools\, themselves beautiful works of craftsmanship in walrus ivory\, wood\, or animal hide\, round out the exhibition content. \nThe exhibition will open May 21\, 2023\, and is organized by guest co-curators Suzi Jones\, PhD\, and Melissa Shaginoff (Ahtna/Paiute). \nShort promotional video of the exhibition may be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7_GyOxSqzo \nLeft: Fancy parka (Iñupiaq)\, ca. 1890. SUMMARY:Pecos Riverwalk Trail and Audio Tour Launch
DESCRIPTION:We invite community members to celebrate the new and improved Pecos Riverwalk Trail and audio tour! The Riverwalk Trail has been made possible in part through our collaboration with the Fort Sumer High School Art Department. We matched eight honors students each with one of our cedar benches\, and they painted different plants that were important to survival for the Indigenous people interred at the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. Through this trail you can learn about how nature influenced the history of this important place\, and you will get to see and imagine the trees and plants that were considered gifts of beauty and survival from the Creator for the Diné (Navajo) and the Ndé (Mescalero Apache). Enjoy each bench painted by young Fort Sumner artists and learn about the incredible history and use of each plant\, many of which are still found in this area. \nWe hope you will join us on this momentous day to dedicate each bench and hear a new chapter of history.

SUMMARY:“Where Are We Going? What Are We Doing?”: Elma Pratt’s International School of Art\, 1928-1967
DESCRIPTION:During the Progressive Era of American history\, American women actively participated in their own society and abroad in ways they believed would make the United States and the world more democratic. Florence D. Bartlett\, Clara Hoover\, and Elma Pratt are three of these American women whose lives intersected and whose legacies are now evidenced through museum and archival collections. These women were explorers of the social and intellectual life of their era; and through the catalysts of art and culture\, travel\, and education\, they enhanced social change. \nNicole Cardassilaris\, educator and humanities scholar\, draws relationships between the lives of these three women but will focus on a history of Elma Pratt’s life and work. Elma Pratt (1888-1977) educator\, collector\, artist\, and philanthropist spent much of her life organizing and managing her innovative International School of Art in Europe and the Americas. Pratt acquired a notable 2\,500-piece collection of international folk art\, which she gave to Miami University in Oxford\, Ohio in 1970. Nicole recounts Pratt’s life experiences that shaped her into a devoted art educator and promoter of international folk art in the United States and abroad. \nFunded by the International Folk Art Foundation \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Is there anything more enjoyable than looking at art and talking about books?  We at the Museum Library don’t think so and that’s why we started an art-themed book club!   Join us in the galleries on May 7 to discuss this month’s title\, The Lost Carving: A Journey to the Heart of Making by David Esterly in conversation with the exhibition With the Grain. \n  \nUpon seeing the wood carving of Grinling Gibbons in a London church Esterly set out to master Gibbons’s nearly forgotten technique\, dedicating his life to the demands of ornamental woodcarving.  In this meditative account Esterly describes the ultimate challenge of replacing a Gibbons masterpiece destroyed by fire. “Written with a philosopher’s intellect and a poet’s grace\, The Lost Carving explores the connection between creativity and physical work and illuminates the passionate pursuit of a vocation that unites head and hand and heart.”  \nThis is a FREE program. \nContact Librarian Abby Smith\, abby.smith@dca.nm.gov to RSVP!

SUMMARY:Axle Contemporary on Museum Hill Plaza
DESCRIPTION:Rick Phelps has a lifelong commitment to making work from materials-at-hand and the cast-off detritus of our out-of-balance society of consumption. He recycles paper\, artistic conventions\, and his self-proclaimed neuroses in an effort to order and reassemble his world. Phelps’ work is made of recycled papers\, from hymnals\, encyclopedias\, menus\, beer cartons\, magazines\, food labels\, security envelope liners or junk mail\, ephemera re-pulped and repurposed into dynamic sculptures. His papier-machéand papier-collé sculptures draw on the traditional Mexican arts of Cartoneria and Piñata as well as other paper traditions from across the world\, but incorporate an ever-changing array of materials\, references\, and characters\, drawing on Pop\, Punk\, Folk\, Funk\, and other vernacular traditions. His work is represented in Santa Fe by Pasqual’s Gallery\, in Truchas by Eight MillionGods\, and in Madrid by Calliope.——————————- \n \n \n \nPost Fiesta Wares and programming is generously funded by Sheila and Kirk Ellis and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation Education Fund\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Indian Market Lecture Series-Free with Admission The Photography of Cara Romero
DESCRIPTION:Please join Cara Romero (Chemehuevi)\, international award-winning fine art photographer in our auditorium\, as she shares her proficiency as an artist and explores how her photographs convey collective Native histories\, and the ways in which indigeneity expresses itself in modern times\, along with her involvement as an artist and her own experiences in the annual Santa Fe’s Indian Market. Free with admission. \nAbout Cara: \nCara Romero is a fine art photographer and an enrolled member of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe\, Romero was raised between contrasting settings: the rural Chemehuevi reservation in California’s Mojave Desert\, and the urban sprawl of Houston\, TX. Romero’s identity informs her photography\, a blend of fine art and editorial photography\, shaped by years of study and a visceral approach to representing Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultural memory\, collective history\, and lived experiences from a Native American female perspective. \nAs an undergraduate at the University of Houston\, Romero pursued a degree in cultural anthropology. Disillusioned\, however\, by academic and media portrayals of Native Americans as bygone\, Romero realized that making photographs could do more than anthropology did in words\, a realization that led to a shift in medium. Since 1998\, Romero’s expansive body of work has been informed by formal training in film\, digital\, fine art and commercial photography. By staging theatrical compositions infused with dramatic color\, Romero takes on the role of storyteller\, using contemporary photography techniques to depict the modernity of Native peoples\, illuminating Indigenous worldviews and aspects of supernaturalism in everyday life. \nMaintaining a studio in Santa Fe\, NM\, Romero regularly participates in Native American art fairs including Santa Fe’s annual Indian Market. Her award-winning work is included in many public and private collections internationally. Married with three children\, she travels between Santa Fe and the Chemehuevi Valley Indian Reservation\, where she maintains close ties to her tribal community and ancestral homelands.  Her photographs explore collective Native histories\, and the ways in which indigeneity expresses itself in modern times. Romero firmly believes that Native peoples are as Indigenous today as they were prior to the advent of colonialism. \nPhoto courtesy of Cara Romero \n  \n
