SUMMARY:Film Screening & Talk Outsider: The Life and Art of Judith Scott
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) will present a public program featuring a film screening and talk about self-taught artist Judith Scott by her sister\, Joyce Scott. A book signing for Joyce Scott’s recently released memoir\, Entwined\, will follow. It will take place Sunday\, October 15\, 2017\, 2:00-3:30pm\, in the auditorium of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture on Museum Hill\, Santa Fe. The film and talk are by museum admission. \nJudith Scott (1943-2005) is a celebrated self-taught artist who discovered her voice through art after decades of being institutionalized. Born with Down syndrome and profound deafness\, Judith was separated from her twin sister\, Joyce\, and sent to an institution when she was 7 years old. She remained institutionalized and isolated for more than 30 years\, until her sister gained legal custody of her in the 1980s and brought her home. Introduced to the art classes offered by the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland\, California\, Judith Scott began a prolific period of creating wrapped-yarn sculptures that have brought her great acclaim. Her work was recently the subject of a traveling exhibition organized by the Brooklyn Museum of Art and she was included in the 2017 Venice Biennale. Judith Scott’s work is in numerous prestigious museum collections\, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Modern Art\, New York; Collection de l’Art Brut\, Lausanne\, Switzerland; American Visionary Art Museum\, Baltimore; and the American Folk Art Museum\, New York. \nThe October 15 public program will include a screening of Betsy Bayha’s documentary Outsider: The Life and Art of Judith Scott (2006)\, followed by a talk by Joyce Scott about her sister and her work\, as well as the sisters’ journey of love\, loss\, and finding a shared language through art. DESCRIPTION:For Immediate Release: October 1\, 2017 (Santa Fe\, NM)— In conjunction with the current exhibition\, “Syria: Cultural Patrimony Under Threat\,” on exhibit at the New Mexico History Museum through November 3\, 2017\, author Claudette Sutton will give a lecture exploring her family’s Syrian roots on Saturday\, October 14\, from 2:00-3:30PM \nClaudette Sutton will take you back to a lost place and time: Aleppo\, Syria\, in the early twentieth century\, when her father was growing up in one of the world’s oldest Jewish communities. Her grandfather was a textile merchant with roots in Syria as deep as anyone could trace. Her father attended school in Aleppo with Jewish\, Christian and Muslim families who still lived alongside one another with respect as they had for centuries\, until rising anti-Semitism in the years before World War II forced the family to find a new home. Through stories and slides\, you’ll experience Mike Sutton’s journey from his childhood home in Aleppo\, to Shanghai\, to skyscraper post-war America.  “Sharing my father’s experience of displacement and re-identification in a new country feels especially poignant at this time when we are seeing staggering numbers of people forced to leave their homes\,” Sutton says\, “and it provides surprising points of inspiration and resonance with today’s events.” \nShared with a journalist’s eye and a daughter’s love\, this is a story that will expand your understanding of Syria’s current war and humanitarian crisis. Following a talk with photos and excerpts from her book\, Farewell\, Aleppo\, Sutton will be joined in conversation by Ron Duncan Hart\, author of several books including\, most recently\, Sephardic Jews\, published by Gaon Books. \nClaudette Sutton\, author of Farewell\, Aleppo: My Father\, My People\, and Their Long Journey Home (Terra Nova Books\, 2014)\, has spoken around the country about Syria’s Jewish history and her family’s emigration from Aleppo to America. SUMMARY:Out of the Box: The Art of the Cigar
DESCRIPTION:From the 1880s into the early 20th century\, cigar manufacturers provided an avenue for the lithographic arts to flourish. Layering up to 10 colors in a stone-lithography process and even adding gold embellishments and stamped embossings\, the images sold cigars through romantic landscapes\, Western adventures\, and iconic representations of women. \nHistorian Loy Glenn Westfall recently donated a portion of his collection of lusciously printed cigar box labels (possibly the world’s largest collection) to the New Mexico History Museum. In Out of the Box: The Art of the Cigar\, opening Oct. 7\, 2016\, Palace Press Curator Thomas Leech shares primo examples to showcase the rich breadth of artwork created during the golden age of cigar box labels. \n“Western imagery portrayed in this collection includes the brands Nue Mexico\, Santa Fe\, Flora Fina (Annie Oakley)\, Tom Mix and Chas. M Russell\,” Leech said. “The themes run from Western Americana to printing technology\, advertising\, popular culture\, and Cuban-American relations\, past and present.” \nThe exhibit includes a 19th-century lithography press and an explanation of the lithographic process. \n

DESCRIPTION:CreativeMornings\, a breakfast lecture series for the creative community hosted in over 160 cities around the world\, tackles the global theme of “pioneer” with Jazz musician and Executive Director of the Outpost Performance Space\, Tom Guralnick. \nEnjoy some networking with other creative professionals before the talk\, along with coffee and pastries courtesy of Iconik Coffee Roasters. \nThis event is free. \nTom Guralnick is the founder and Executive Director of the Outpost Performance Space and has been an arts presenter and performing musician for more than 35 years. Guralnick is also the Co-Artistic Director of the New Mexico Jazz Festival (Albuquerque & Santa Fe) since 1996. He is a founding director of the Western Jazz Presenters Network an organization which has been block-booking jazz in the west since 1995. In 1976\, upon moving to New Mexico from Boston\, until 1980\, Guralnick ran the New Mexico Jazz Workshop and established it as a an Albuquerque-based jazz presenting organization. From 1970\, until his retirement from performing in 2001\, Guralnick toured nationally and internationally as a solo saxophonist as well as with his own innovative trio\, the TG3.

DESCRIPTION:Los Pleneros de la 21 (“LP21”)\, an Afro-Puerto Rican bomba and plena ensemble featuring musicians\, dancers\, and artisans\, returns to New Mexico for a four-day National Performance Network (NPN) residency\, Redobles de Cultura Boricua\, which will include workshops and other activities as well as the group’s concert at the NHCC.  \nLP21’s complex\, multi-part vocal harmonies\, set to the rhythms of hand-held plena drums and barrel-shaped bomba drums\, resurrect the African-rooted bomba and plena musical styles of Puerto Rico. Billboard praised the band for its “exhilaratingly deep Latino explorations of Afro-Caribbean grooves\,” and the New York Times wrote\, “the melodies are gorgeous and the tunes perfectly arranged\, precise rhythms making way for singing or a drum section.” \nLP21 is also a non-profit community-based organization\, founded in 1983 by National Heritage Fellow Juan Gutiérrez and located in the heart of El Barrio (NYC’s Spanish Harlem); the group’s mission is to “unite community building and cultural equity through music.” Members make traditional music programming accessible to the public\, expose inner city youth and others to the cultural heritage of Puerto Rico while encouraging their active participation in these traditions\, and perform a repertoire of work embedded in the rich tradition of Puerto Rican folk music for audiences everywhere. DESCRIPTION:Born in San Diego in 1946 and raised in the American Southwest\, painter Paul Pletka has created a body of work that owes much to the West of his childhood\, and more to the West of his imagination. Infused with an operatic sense of theater and drama\, his paintings conjure scenes from the cultures\, history\, and religions of the American West and Mexico—diffused\, as Pletka writes\, “through the lens of personal experiences\, dreams\, research\, and ancestral memory.” \nIn Paul Pletka: Imagined Wests\, the first book on this major American artist in over thirty years\, readers will encounter the full range of Pletka’s oeuvre through more than eighty color reproductions of his best-known and most influential works. Images of warriors and shamans are paired with depictions of George Armstrong Custer\, Christian saints\, and the lost gods of North and South America\, their forms rendered in a distinctive style that mixes classical drawing and expressionist distortion with elements of surrealism and European symbolism. SUMMARY:Into the Dinetah Labyrinth: Exploring Pueblo I and Navajo Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:Most archaeological enthusiasts venture north along US 550 on their way to explore the Ancestral Pueblo world\, and most turn to the west\, conscious only of the Great Houses of Chaco Canyon\, Salmon Ruins\, and Aztec Ruins. Few travelers turn to the east and take the less traveled path into the Dinetah\, known best as the traditional homeland of the Navajo. The labyrinth of canyons\, mesas\, and dirt roads characterizing this region can be intimidating\, and this sentiment may have extended deep into the past. In addition to the better known Navajo presence\, the region was the home to a strong early Puebloan population\, but the Chaco people did not seem to venture much east of the Great North Road. Why? \nThe Dinetah extends from Aztec in the north to Dulce in the south and is sandwiched roughly between US 64 on the east and US 550 on the west. The majority of the region is administered by the Bureau of Land Management and the Dinetah may be the richest federal archaeological land holding in the United States\, however\, the archaeological sites are subtle\, not developed for the visiting public\, and effectively unknown to most of the world. Hiking is not strenuous but some rock climbing will be involved. High clearance vehicles are recommended; we will be carpooling to all of the sites. \nSpaces are limited. SUMMARY:Tom Lea & H.P. Mera at the Laboratory of Anthropology  Documenting Pueblo Designs in the 1930s
DESCRIPTION:This Free First Sunday program is offered in collaboration with the Tom Lea Institute (El Paso\, TX) during its annual Tom Lea Month. \nLea spent almost three years in Santa Fe\, and the surrounding area\, in the early 1930s. One of his posts as a New Deal Works Progress Administration (WPA) artist was at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Laboratory of Anthropology\, where he painted several hundred designs from half of the current extant Pueblos’ pottery collected through the Indian Arts Fund. H.P. Mera complemented the illustrations with short descriptions of the 10 Pueblos\, with a significant focus on Zuni’s “Rainbird Design” and its influence in nearby Pueblos. \nSpeakers include Kathy Flynn of the New Deal Preservation Association and Dody Fugate\, retired assistant curator at MIAC. \n
