SUMMARY:Young Voices of Santa Fe Opera Present Encounters with Opera at Museum during National Opera Week 2017
DESCRIPTION:(Santa Fe\, NM) — New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science patrons will be treated a performance by the Young Voices of the Santa Fe Opera when they present Encounters with Opera.  The performance will take place Saturday November\, 4 during 2017 National Opera Week\, a week-long celebration of opera takes place in cities and town throughout the country. \nThe Young Voices of Santa Fe Opera is the company’s training program for high school students directed by Kathleen Clawson. They will perform various arias and choruses during two performances at the museum on Saturday morning. \nThe Young Voices performance is timely with the current traveling\, and highly interative exhibition Wild Music: Songs & Sounds of Life. National Opera Week runs from October 27 – November 5\, and is coordinated by Opera America The performances take place in spaces where opera is not typically found\, engaging with audiences outside of the opera scene. Watch a National Opera Week welcome video by local chairs Sandy and Sam Donaldson here. \nThe Saturday performances at the Museum of Natural History & Science in Albuquerque will be held at 9:45AM & 10:45 AM. SUMMARY:Brainpower & Brownbags “Discovering Annie Thomas Lillibridge – Her Journey from Acoma Pueblo to the South Dakota Prairie”
DESCRIPTION:In January 1881\, a Presbyterian missionary collected four Acoma Pueblo children to attend the new Indian Industrial School at Carlisle\, PA. \nAmong them was eight year-old Annie\, the speaker’s step-grandmother.  She was a model student at Carlisle and became an employee of the US Indian Service\, but her short life ended in 1904 on the South Dakota prairie. \nDr. Lillibridge examines the conditions in New Mexico that resulted in her removal to Carlisle\, and how the US government’s Indian assimilation policies influenced the course of her life.

Build an alien landscape\, observe snakes\, spiders and creepy critters and distinguish fact from fantasy.  \nThroughout the afternoon\, at 3\, 4 & 5:00PM\, settle in for a fun\, Halloween-themed laser in the Planetarium. Entitled Fright Light\, this show combines laser characters\, beautiful abstract patterns\, and music to create a spine-tingling treat. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 28th from 6-9pm at Lincoln After Dark! \nWith infamy gained through the Lincoln County Wars\, and the lives of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett\, the history of Lincoln\, New Mexico is mired with acts of revenge\, tragic accidents\, vigilante justice\, and senseless violence. Between 1870 and 1886\, more than fifty people met a violent end along this quarter-mile long stretch of dusty road. This fact led President Rutherford B. Hayes to declare Lincoln’s main thoroughfare as “The Most Dangerous Street in America.” Hundreds more were killed throughout the region during a time when feuds were most often settled at gunpoint\, lawmen were oftentimes involved with the criminals they swore to apprehend\, and danger lurked around every one of life’s corners. \nDelve into this dark past during the Murder and Mayhem tours through Lincoln on Saturday October 28th. SUMMARY:Dia de los Muertos: Pre-Columbian Past to Present Brown Bag Talks
DESCRIPTION:Recent archaeological evidence from Ireland sheds light on Bronze Age burial sites which indicate the beginnings of the later Celtic rituals and traditions of Samhain (SAH-win) which precedes that later Christian celebration of All Saints’ Day – translated into the New World as “Dia de los Muertos.” This talk delves into the ancient European past and the path that leads to the present contemporary practice of this celebration. \nThe Brown Bag talks will take place at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology at 12:00 noon in the CNMA library. Seating is limited. Admission is free. \nThe Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road\, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road\, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like skylights on the roof.

DESCRIPTION:(Santa Fe\, NM) – Meet historic characters and hear ghost stories and legends of New Mexico by a cozy fire during Voices of the Past: Moonlight Tours at Fort Selden Historic Site. The fun begins at 6:00pm through 9:00pm on Saturday\, October 21. Fort Selden is located 13 miles north of Las Cruces\, exit 19\, off I-25\, Radium Springs. \nGuests will meet historic figures from the past as they tour the ruins. Meet a trader on El Camino Real\, a brave cavalry soldier\, a school teacher\, a laundress\, a rancher\, an infantryman coping with the challenges of frontier duties\, an officer’s wife\, and others as you tour the ruins in the moonlight. Before your tour\, our storyteller will mesmerize you with traditional New Mexico stories of ghosts and spirits. Group tours leave every 15 minutes beginning at 6 p.m.  \nTickets for Voices of the Past: Moonlight Tours are sold at the door; cash or checks only. Admission is $5 for adults\, kids are free. The entire event is outdoors so dress accordingly. Built on the banks of the Rio Grande\, this adobe fort housed units of the U.S. Infantry and Cavalry. Their intent was to protect settlers and travelers in the Mesilla Valley. The El Camino Real Historic Trail Site was closed in 2016 until further notice. In 2004\, the historic Taylor\, Barela\, Reynolds\, Mesilla House and Property in Mesilla\, were designated a state historic site upon its donation to the state by the John Paul Taylor family. Mr.& Mrs. Taylor will retain a life estate on the property and it will not be open to the public until their deaths. DESCRIPTION:Projectile points are one of the most iconic images of archaeology in the American Southwest. This exhibition focuses on some of the projectile points that are commonly found here in New Mexico from Paleoindian times (13\,500 years ago)\, through the Archaic\, and into Puebloan times (1\,260 to 110 years ago) as well as some of the exotic points that have come to New Mexico from California and Texas. \nThe exhibit discusses how archaeologists classify points\, why they change through time\, and how illegal collection of points can impact the archaeological record. \nThis exhibit opens on Saturday October 21\, 2017 at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road). After that\, the exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on holidays.

Milton Bluehouse\, Jr. will help us understand better the inadvertent “faux pas” one culture may make when dealing with another — without even realizing it. \nMr. Bluehouse is a Navajo tribal member from Ganado\, Arizona. He specializes in tribal intergovernmental relations with federal and state governments with focus areas on the environment\, natural resources\, cultural/sacred sites\, tribal consultation facilitation\, and process design. SUMMARY:Film Screening & Talk Outsider: The Life and Art of Judith Scott
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) will present a public program featuring a film screening and talk about self-taught artist Judith Scott by her sister\, Joyce Scott. A book signing for Joyce Scott’s recently released memoir\, Entwined\, will follow. It will take place Sunday\, October 15\, 2017\, 2:00-3:30pm\, in the auditorium of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture on Museum Hill\, Santa Fe. The film and talk are by museum admission. \nJudith Scott (1943-2005) is a celebrated self-taught artist who discovered her voice through art after decades of being institutionalized. Born with Down syndrome and profound deafness\, Judith was separated from her twin sister\, Joyce\, and sent to an institution when she was 7 years old. She remained institutionalized and isolated for more than 30 years\, until her sister gained legal custody of her in the 1980s and brought her home. Introduced to the art classes offered by the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland\, California\, Judith Scott began a prolific period of creating wrapped-yarn sculptures that have brought her great acclaim. Her work was recently the subject of a traveling exhibition organized by the Brooklyn Museum of Art and she was included in the 2017 Venice Biennale. Judith Scott’s work is in numerous prestigious museum collections\, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Modern Art\, New York; Collection de l’Art Brut\, Lausanne\, Switzerland; American Visionary Art Museum\, Baltimore; and the American Folk Art Museum\, New York. \nThe October 15 public program will include a screening of Betsy Bayha’s documentary Outsider: The Life and Art of Judith Scott (2006)\, followed by a talk by Joyce Scott about her sister and her work\, as well as the sisters’ journey of love\, loss\, and finding a shared language through art. DESCRIPTION:For Immediate Release: October 1\, 2017 (Santa Fe\, NM)— In conjunction with the current exhibition\, “Syria: Cultural Patrimony Under Threat\,” on exhibit at the New Mexico History Museum through November 3\, 2017\, author Claudette Sutton will give a lecture exploring her family’s Syrian roots on Saturday\, October 14\, from 2:00-3:30PM \nClaudette Sutton will take you back to a lost place and time: Aleppo\, Syria\, in the early twentieth century\, when her father was growing up in one of the world’s oldest Jewish communities. Her grandfather was a textile merchant with roots in Syria as deep as anyone could trace. Her father attended school in Aleppo with Jewish\, Christian and Muslim families who still lived alongside one another with respect as they had for centuries\, until rising anti-Semitism in the years before World War II forced the family to find a new home. Through stories and slides\, you’ll experience Mike Sutton’s journey from his childhood home in Aleppo\, to Shanghai\, to skyscraper post-war America.  “Sharing my father’s experience of displacement and re-identification in a new country feels especially poignant at this time when we are seeing staggering numbers of people forced to leave their homes\,” Sutton says\, “and it provides surprising points of inspiration and resonance with today’s events.” \nShared with a journalist’s eye and a daughter’s love\, this is a story that will expand your understanding of Syria’s current war and humanitarian crisis. Following a talk with photos and excerpts from her book\, Farewell\, Aleppo\, Sutton will be joined in conversation by Ron Duncan Hart\, author of several books including\, most recently\, Sephardic Jews\, published by Gaon Books. \nClaudette Sutton\, author of Farewell\, Aleppo: My Father\, My People\, and Their Long Journey Home (Terra Nova Books\, 2014)\, has spoken around the country about Syria’s Jewish history and her family’s emigration from Aleppo to America. SUMMARY:Out of the Box: The Art of the Cigar
DESCRIPTION:From the 1880s into the early 20th century\, cigar manufacturers provided an avenue for the lithographic arts to flourish. Layering up to 10 colors in a stone-lithography process and even adding gold embellishments and stamped embossings\, the images sold cigars through romantic landscapes\, Western adventures\, and iconic representations of women. \nHistorian Loy Glenn Westfall recently donated a portion of his collection of lusciously printed cigar box labels (possibly the world’s largest collection) to the New Mexico History Museum. In Out of the Box: The Art of the Cigar\, opening Oct. 7\, 2016\, Palace Press Curator Thomas Leech shares primo examples to showcase the rich breadth of artwork created during the golden age of cigar box labels. \n“Western imagery portrayed in this collection includes the brands Nue Mexico\, Santa Fe\, Flora Fina (Annie Oakley)\, Tom Mix and Chas. M Russell\,” Leech said. “The themes run from Western Americana to printing technology\, advertising\, popular culture\, and Cuban-American relations\, past and present.” \nThe exhibit includes a 19th-century lithography press and an explanation of the lithographic process. \n

DESCRIPTION:CreativeMornings\, a breakfast lecture series for the creative community hosted in over 160 cities around the world\, tackles the global theme of “pioneer” with Jazz musician and Executive Director of the Outpost Performance Space\, Tom Guralnick. \nEnjoy some networking with other creative professionals before the talk\, along with coffee and pastries courtesy of Iconik Coffee Roasters. \nThis event is free. \nTom Guralnick is the founder and Executive Director of the Outpost Performance Space and has been an arts presenter and performing musician for more than 35 years. Guralnick is also the Co-Artistic Director of the New Mexico Jazz Festival (Albuquerque & Santa Fe) since 1996. He is a founding director of the Western Jazz Presenters Network an organization which has been block-booking jazz in the west since 1995. In 1976\, upon moving to New Mexico from Boston\, until 1980\, Guralnick ran the New Mexico Jazz Workshop and established it as a an Albuquerque-based jazz presenting organization. From 1970\, until his retirement from performing in 2001\, Guralnick toured nationally and internationally as a solo saxophonist as well as with his own innovative trio\, the TG3.
