DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of our historic first day\, as well as the century since\, the Museum will host a free\, day-long birthday event for all ages from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Museum\, on the surrounding streets\, as well as on the historic Santa Fe Plaza.  \nNew Mexico’s artistic past\, present and future converge during 2017 as the New Mexico Museum of Art celebrates its 100-year anniversary. \nPoints of interest during the party include: \nVisitors can participate in art making activities including the making of an Artrageous birthday hat\, birthday card or decorate paper 100 year eyewear. \nVisitors who come in 1917-1920s costumes win a prize. \nMeet costumed interpreters dressed as artists from the past who will be roaming the galleries and talking about artwork on view. SUMMARY:Shifting Light : Photographic Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Shifting Light offers a twenty-first century perspective on the museum’s long-term engagement with the popular medium of photography. Organized into the broad categories of land and place\, culture and identity\, community and interconnection\, and vision and creativity\, the exhibition juxtaposes photographs in ways that amplify their meanings and suggest new narratives. Ansel Adams’ famous 1940 photograph Moonrise\, Hernandez is paired with a 1975 landscape by Thomas Barrow from his series Cancellations\, while Alfred Stieglitz’s 1918 portrait of Georgia O’Keeffe keeps company with images by Anne Noggle and Joyce Neimanas. \nUsing portraits and oral histories\, the show introduces some of the personalities in New Mexico’s twentieth-century photography scene\, such as artist Laura Gilpin and curator Beaumont Newhall. Collectors\, another integral part of the photography community\, are represented by a changing selection of promised gifts that are pledged as future additions to the museum’s collection. Visitors are invited to write or draw their own memories\, favorite photographs\, and other responses to the show. Vintage exhibition announcements\, brochures\, and publications tell a complementary story of photography’s growing prominence at the museum from the mid-1920s to the present. \nAn electronic component begins in January 2018\, when a group of twenty artists will post images inspired by the exhibition themes to the museum’s Instagram site on alternating weeks. \nSee Curator of Photography Katherine Ware’s article about the museum’s early history of exhibiting photography\, published in Winter 2017 issue of the Museum of New Mexico’s journal\, El Palacio.

DESCRIPTION:Contact: Local to Global\, like the other centennial exhibitions\, highlights the engagement of artists with New Mexico\, the Museum of Art with artists and collectors\, and New Mexico’s engagement with the national and international arts community. Additionally the exhibition looks beyond those very literal intersections and implicates larger ideas about contact such as our engagement with the land and environment\, our communities’ alignment with one another\, and more broadly the implications of contact such as the discovery of the New World\, and space exploration. \nContact: Local to Global has two interrelated components – the first of which will focus on works by artists like Bruce Nauman\, Agnes Martin\, Frederick Hammersley and Susan York who have lived and worked in the region\, as well as artists and artworks with differing connections to New Mexico. \nA second component of more contemporary artworks directly address issues of land\, location and environment and will include the site specific installation Pollination by indigenous collaborative Postcommodity\, single channel videos The Placeless Place by Berlin and New York based artists Ati Maier\, and Yorgo Alexopoulos’s work Everything In-Between. Alexopoulos’ work\, a 4K animation with custom electronics\, was shot and commissioned in New Mexico underscoring the continued relevance of the centuries-old tradition of artists making work that is a meditation on the New Mexico landscape.

Focusing on the museum’s historic collection\, Horizons honors our institution’s history as a locus for creativity. This exhibition\, including paintings\, drawings\, prints\, and furniture\, highlights the impact of the museum in creating an artistic identity for the state. \nMajor themes will include the founding of the museum\, Native arts\, a spotlight on Gustave Baumann\, 20th century art and community\, furniture design in New Mexico\, and a selection of work voted on by visitors.

DESCRIPTION:Food produced in New Mexico is showcased at the fourth-annual “HomeGrown: A New Mexico Food Show & Gift Market” on Nov. 18-19 at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces. \n  \nMore than 100 growers\, companies and individuals from around the state will sell their products as the gift-giving season approaches. The event is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday\, Nov. 18\, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday\, Nov. 19. Admission is $5 per vehicle and the first 100 vehicles each day receive a free\, burlap shopping bag. The bags can also be purchased at the event for $5. \n  \nThe museum is again partnering with the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and the state’s growers to offer great products to buy or sample.

SUMMARY:The 1960s: Great Dreams or Grim Nightmares? A RENESAN Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The way you answer that question may depend on your age\, your gender\, your geographic location\, your income\, and your race. The Bay Area\, Mississippi\, Taos\, Greenwich Village\, and Chicago tell different stories\, with some common threads running through them. For some\, it was a time of great promise and renewed social activism; for others\, these same activities posed a challenge to the established order and a threat to national security. \nRENESAN\, Santa Fe’s Institute for Lifelong Learning\, is collaborating with the New Mexico History Museum and the Palace of the Governors to expand the reach of its exhibit “Voices of Counter Culture in the Southwest” to the nation as a whole\, examining some of the major issues raised by the times and exploring their impact on American culture today.   \nOver the course of four days\, November 13 to 16\, scholars\, writers\, photographers\, and activists\, both local and national\, will discuss the key themes that take these conversations far beyond the cliché of sex\, drugs\, and rock ‘n’ roll. \nAmerican historian David Farber\, whose landmark book The Age of Great Dreams: America in the 1960s provides deep background about the times leading up to the decade\, gives the opening lecture and sets the stage for the talks to come by discussing the meaning and fracture of a national culture; the anti-communism of the era; and the big themes of Vietnam\, the civil rights movement\, the nascent women’s movement (gaining momentum in the 70s) and the conservative backlash of the political establishment. Now Roberts Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas\, Farber taught at the University of New Mexico for a number of years and can speak knowledgably to local as well as national issues. \nSanta Fe scholar Lois Rudnick focuses on the ways the era’s communes have affected current practices around food\, agriculture\, and conservation\, and both she and Taos native Sylvia Rodriguez address identity\, racial and class disparities. In her very thoughtful essay in the book accompanying the History Museum’s counterculture exhibit\, Rodriguez\, a Taos high schooler at the time\, reminds us that the idealism of the Age of Aquarius failed to materialize as the country took a sharp turn to the right. Rudnick points to the 60s’ legacies that continue to affect New Mexican lives today\, while Roberta Price\, author/photographer\, speaks to the hope that we can return to the sense of the infinite possibilities of those times. \nAlbuquerque resident (and former Weatherman) Mark Rudd talks about effective community organizing; Bette Evans reviews the civil rights movement and the courts; K. Paul Jones covers the Vietnam War (and whether we learned anything from it); Lisa Law shows her award-winning documentary film Flashing on the Sixties; and Jack Loeffler and Meredith Davidson\, co-curators of Voices of Counterculture in the Southwest\, present on the making of an exhibit in their lecture. A final panel offers different voices a chance for commentary\, questioning\, and summary\, examining the overall impact of the 60s and how the long arc of history will judge the efforts to create a more just society. \nFinally\, when you’ve had all the thought-provoking talk you can take\, there’s Good Vibrations\, a symposium- closing1960’s dance party from 6 to 8 p.m.\, November 17\, at the Santa Fe Women’s Club. $20. SUMMARY:Lama Foundation   Gallery talk with Siddiq Hans von Breisen
DESCRIPTION:Join the New Mexico History Museum every second Saturday of the month from June 2017-February 2018 for a presentation and conversation-style gallery talk in conjunction with the current exhibit\, Voices of Counterculture in the Southwest. \nSiddiq Hans von Briesen\, the brother of Lama Foundation cofounder Barbara Durkee\, was an early communard at Lama. Von Briesen will speak about the commune’s evolution over its fifty years. \nLama Foundation sits in a forested area at 8\,800 feet on the western aspect of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range north of Taos\, New Mexico. In 1967 local artist Herman “the hermit” Rednick found a piece of land with a natural spring and encouraged Steve and Barbara Durkee and Jonathan Altman to establish their alternative-living effort there. The Durkees had been living in Garnerville\, New York\, where their social circle of artists had become known for psychedelic light shows and experiments with LSD. Drawn to nature\, the two ventured to the Southwest in search of an idyllic place to situate a new commune. Shortly after founding Lama\, they imposed a rule forbidding the use of illegal drugs on the property. As a result\, some original numbers decamped immediately. Gradually the commune flourished as the residents constructed uniquely impressive buildings and devoted themselves to spiritual practice from every persuasion. Lama Foundation is one of very few of the communes that remain in the northern Rio Grande Watershed.

The lessons of the Warrior are universal; the spirit of the Warrior survives\, even in the face of conflict. \nWith a focus on the spiritual and historic journey of Native American Warriors\, Silver Bullet Productions will present the story of the Warrior\, the importance of cultures in modern quests\, and the lessons of War through the lens of these cultures. The characters will be elders and historians from New Mexican tribes and Native veterans of World War II\, and the Korean\, Vietnam and Afghanistan/Iraq conflicts. Grounded in research and guided by voices of men and women in our armed forces\, the documentary will reveal the distinct motive\, preparation\, conflict\, and healing of tribal soldiers.

DESCRIPTION:The French Connection \nAn analysis and Discussion of the Segesser II Hide Painting as an Historical Document \nTalk by Jeff Hengesbaugh \n The only thing consistent about history is its completeness. Every once in a while\, original information\, not derived from or dependent on something else\, is discovered in a document\, artifact\, or image and offers a first-hand account of past events.  \n The Segesser II Hide Painting depicts a battle between the Spanish and the French with indigenous allies. Yet there is controversy that challenges its integrity as an historical document. Namely that the 37 French combatants depicted in the painting are imaginary. I’ve used circumstantial evidence and empirical information from visual images to place the Segesser II hide painting on trial and let the audience be the jury.

SUMMARY:Holiday Party and Silent Auction
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Archaeology (FOA) is holding its annual Holiday Party and Silent Auction\, Sunday\, November 5\, from 3 to 6 pm\, at the Hotel Santa Fe. This festive and informative event provides a rare opportunity for the public to learn about how New Mexico’s first inhabitants lived\, their not-so-primitive technologies\, and some of the interesting archaeological digs underway in New Mexico. The party benefits the FOA\, a volunteer organization that was created by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation in 1991 to support ongoing research and education projects at the Museum of New Mexico’s Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS). \nThis event helps raise money for another very important OAS function: to educate the next generation of New Mexicans in the state’s rich archaeological history through its award-winning education outreach program. OAS archaeologists travel to schools throughout New Mexico\, trying to reach every county in the state each year. Operating almost exclusively on private donations since 1995\, this successful program has twice won the prestigious “Award for Excellence in Public Education\,” from the Society for American Archaeology.

SUMMARY:Young Voices of Santa Fe Opera Present Encounters with Opera at Museum during National Opera Week 2017
DESCRIPTION:(Santa Fe\, NM) — New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science patrons will be treated a performance by the Young Voices of the Santa Fe Opera when they present Encounters with Opera.  The performance will take place Saturday November\, 4 during 2017 National Opera Week\, a week-long celebration of opera takes place in cities and town throughout the country. \nThe Young Voices of Santa Fe Opera is the company’s training program for high school students directed by Kathleen Clawson. They will perform various arias and choruses during two performances at the museum on Saturday morning. \nThe Young Voices performance is timely with the current traveling\, and highly interative exhibition Wild Music: Songs & Sounds of Life. National Opera Week runs from October 27 – November 5\, and is coordinated by Opera America The performances take place in spaces where opera is not typically found\, engaging with audiences outside of the opera scene. SUMMARY:Brainpower & Brownbags “Discovering Annie Thomas Lillibridge – Her Journey from Acoma Pueblo to the South Dakota Prairie”
DESCRIPTION:In January 1881\, a Presbyterian missionary collected four Acoma Pueblo children to attend the new Indian Industrial School at Carlisle\, PA. \nAmong them was eight year-old Annie\, the speaker’s step-grandmother.  She was a model student at Carlisle and became an employee of the US Indian Service\, but her short life ended in 1904 on the South Dakota prairie. \nDr. Lillibridge examines the conditions in New Mexico that resulted in her removal to Carlisle\, and how the US government’s Indian assimilation policies influenced the course of her life.

Build an alien landscape\, observe snakes\, spiders and creepy critters and distinguish fact from fantasy.  \nThroughout the afternoon\, at 3\, 4 & 5:00PM\, settle in for a fun\, Halloween-themed laser in the Planetarium. Entitled Fright Light\, this show combines laser characters\, beautiful abstract patterns\, and music to create a spine-tingling treat. SUMMARY:Tour Lincoln Historic Site After Dark!! Get serious about being Spooky this Halloween
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 28th from 6-9pm at Lincoln After Dark! \nWith infamy gained through the Lincoln County Wars\, and the lives of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett\, the history of Lincoln\, New Mexico is mired with acts of revenge\, tragic accidents\, vigilante justice\, and senseless violence. Between 1870 and 1886\, more than fifty people met a violent end along this quarter-mile long stretch of dusty road. This fact led President Rutherford B. Hayes to declare Lincoln’s main thoroughfare as “The Most Dangerous Street in America.” Hundreds more were killed throughout the region during a time when feuds were most often settled at gunpoint\, lawmen were oftentimes involved with the criminals they swore to apprehend\, and danger lurked around every one of life’s corners. \nDelve into this dark past during the Murder and Mayhem tours through Lincoln on Saturday October 28th.
