DESCRIPTION: Evidence for water-deposited sedimentary rocks discovered on Mars by the NASA Rovers\, and small iron concretions called ‘blueberries’ found on the Red Planet\, will be discussed by University of Utah professor\, Marjorie A. Chan\, Ph.D.  She will also discuss the water-deposited sedimentary rocks that occur here in New Mexico and other parts of the Southwest. \nThe lecture is Wednesday January 31 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the museum.  General admission tickets for the lecture are $7\, ($6 members\, $4 students).  Purchase lecture tickets at NMnaturalhistory.org or (if seats are available) at the door. SUMMARY:Museum Observatory open for Super Moon\, Bluemoon Eclipse January 31
DESCRIPTION:In the early morning hours of Wednesday\, January 31\, a rare astronomical concurrence of events will include a full moon\, a Supermoon and a Blue Moon that will be totally eclipsed! Early risers can experience this phenomenon at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science early that morning from 5 – 7 a.m. (weather permitting)4\, 2017  \nThe phrase ‘Blue Moon’ has nothing to do with the color of the moon. The term is used to describe a second full moon during the same month. This ‘Blue Moon’ will turn red\, which is what happens when there’s a total lunar eclipse. \nThis is a rare astronomical event: the last Blue Moon total eclipse was in 1866 and the next one will be in 2028. Enhancing the phenomenon will be the fact this is also a Supermoon\, where the moon is as close to the Earth as it gets. The next time all of the same elements come together will be in 2037. \nThe New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science\, Albuquerque Astronomical Society\, and Rio Rancho Astronomical Society will provide telescopes on the museum observatory deck to view this astronomical trifecta coincidence on the morning of the 31st before sunrise. Informational posters and handouts will explain the terms Supermoon\, Blue Moon\, what causes eclipses\, and why eclipses make the moon turn red. \nVisitors who come to the museum from now through January 31 can see a series of brief videos explaining eclipses\, Blue Moons\, and Supermoons showing on a temporary monitor in the Space Science exhibit gallery. This will provide information to understand and enjoy the eclipse for those who will watch on their own. In that case\, make sure you have an unobstructed view of the western sky since the best part of the eclipse starts while the moon is setting. \nHere are the times for the stages of the eclipse: Partial Eclipse Begins – 4:48 a.m. Total Eclipse Begins – 5:52 a.m. Maximum Eclipse – 6:30 a.m. Total Eclipse Ends – 7:07 a.m. Totality ends at almost the same moment the moon sets\, but that time will vary according to the terrain on western horizon from your location. \nThis event will be canceled if the sky is cloudy. No reservations are required\, and admission is by donation. Feel free to come with bed hair and in your pajamas (assuming you don’t mind being seen in public that way)! Check the weather and dress appropriately for being outside in the cold. \n

DESCRIPTION:Lesley Poling-Kempes presents “Ladies of the Canyons: A League of Extraordinary Women and their Adventures in the American Southwest”\, the true story of Natalie Curtis\, Carol Stanley\, Alice Klauber and Mary Cabot Wheelwright\, women whose lives were transformed by the people and landscape of the American Southwest in the first decades of the 20th century. \nPoling-Kempes is the author of many books about the American Southwest including Bone Horses\, winner of the WILLA Literary Award in Contemporary Fiction and the Tony Hillerman Award for Best Fiction. Her nonfiction books include Ghost Ranch\, Valley of Shining Stone: The Story of Abiquiu\, and The Harvey Girls: Women Who Opened the West . She lives in Abiquiu\, New Mexico. \nThis is Part One of a three-part lecture series co-presented with El Rancho de las Golondrinas in St. Francis Auditorium.

SUMMARY:Chispa: NM Jazz Latino Orchestra\, from the beginning
DESCRIPTION:The first half of the New Mexico Jazz Latino Orchestra’s latest offering\, From the Beginning\, celebrates the music written by and associated with the great Dizzy Gillespie. The featured artist\, Bobby Shew on trumpet\, is an international jazz star and a personal friend of Mr. Gillespie. Joining Mr. Shew is tenor saxophonist Doug Lawrence\, who toured with Mr. Gillespie and his band in the 1980s; master Cuban musician César Bauvallet\, who performed with Mr. Gillespie when he travelled to Havana on the 1970s\, leads the rhythm section on congas. \nThe second half of the show features a tribute to the great Chabuca Granda\, widely considered Peru’s most legendary singer. NMJLO performs Ms. Granda’s music in the “Salsa Criolla” style\, in which salsa and jazz musicians present a blend of salsa repertoire with Afro‐Peruvian festejo backgrounds\, synchronizing these two popular musical styles with traditional instrumentation to provide a blend of ancestral and contemporary tones. This year NMJLO is proud to present\, directly from Lima\, Peru\, Tito Manrique. Mr. Manrique is a Salsa Criolla guitarist\, composer\, and arranger who enjoys immense popularity throughout South America\, and who will bring with him brand new arrangements of music associated with Ms. Granda. Joining Mr. Manrique are brilliant vocalist Jackie Zamora (also from Lima) and César Bauvallet on trombone. $27\, $32 w/ $3 off for NHCC Members

DESCRIPTION:This fun exhibit features 44 objects from the museum’s collections that combine usefulness and beauty. \nSome objects are purely utilitarian in nature\, with no real aesthetic appeal. At the other end of the spectrum are objects of art\, which serve no functional purpose other than to be appreciated for their beauty\, or the message the artist wishes to convey. Somewhere in the middle are those things that have a definite purpose\, but which also exhibit a deliberate sense of style. That’s what the objects in this exhibit have in common. \nIt includes everything from woven items such as Navajo rugs to Apache and Pima baskets\, to vases\, pots and bowls\, as well as saddles\, guns\, and furniture. \nThe exhibit will be in the museum’s Traditions Gallery through July 8.

In 2008 she joined an elite group of history’s singers when\, as Elvira in Verdi’s Ernani\, she made her professional operatic debut on the Met stage. Since then she has fast become recognized as one of today’s outstanding vocalists\, excelling in the most demanding heroines of the 19th-century bel canto repertoire as well as in the operas of Verdi and Mozart. As the New Yorker put it\, “Meade is astounding. … She has exceptional dynamic control\, able to move from floating pianissimos to sudden dramatic swells. The coloratura effects – rapid runs\, trills\, delicate turns\, and so on – are handled with uncommon ease. She is a very musical singer\, naturally and intelligently riding the phrase.”

We will be making small cards\, using soft carving blocks.   We will carve them with linoleum block printing tools\, select from a few colors of printing ink\, and learn to use brayers. SUMMARY:Super Blue Moon Eclipse Preview at the Museum’s $5 First Friday January 5th
DESCRIPTION: There is an astronomical trifecta happening January 31 – a Super Blue Moon Eclipse. On that morning\, the moon will be full and is both a Super Moon and Blue Moon and it will also be totally eclipsed!  During the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science’s $5 First Friday event on January 5 there will be a preview event of this astronomical phenomenon convergence.     \nEach First Friday\, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is open in the evening and focuses on a topic in science. During this $5 First Friday\, museum patrons will learn all about the lunar coincidence happening in the sky on the morning of January 31 before sunrise.  The motions of the moon and Earth will come together for this very unusual lunar event\, and all will be explained so that you can prepare\, enjoy\, and understand what is happening.  The museum will also have telescopes available to see the eclipse on January 31 from 5 – 7 a.m.\, weather permitting. \nOn January 5 from 5:30 – 9 p.m.\, $5 museum admission includes access to Wild Music\, and this will almost be your very last chance to see it since the exhibit closes on January 7.  The highly interactive exhibition explores evidence for the biological origins of music.  Through environmental soundscapes\, exhibits\, and listening experiences\, visitors are invited to explore nature’s score and expand their understanding of what makes music. \nThe DynaTheater will be showing its newest film\, Humpback Whales\, for an additional $5 at 6:30 p.m.  Set in the spectacular waters of Alaska\, Hawaii and the remote islands of Tonga\, this ocean adventure offers audiences an up-close look at how these whales communicate\, sing\, feed\, play and take care of their young. \nThe Planetarium will present Fractal Friday at the usual times of 6\, 7\, 8\, and 9 p.m. with the normal admission of adults $10\, seniors $7\, and children (3-12) $5.  Shows typically sell out in advance\, so get your tickets early on brownpapertickets.com. \nThe Museum Observatory will be open to the night sky on January 5 from 6 – 8 p.m.\, weather permitting.  The Nature Works store will be selling model humpback whales and other unique gifts from 5:30 – 8 p.m. on this First Friday. The Hope Café will be open continuously from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. that day\, so you can enjoy dinner while waiting for the museum to reopen (only the café entrance will be open from 5 – 5:30 p.m.)

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Making It Matter Again: Exploring our Roots\, Including Life Way\, Food Ways\, and Our Future
DESCRIPTION:For three months in 2013\, Swentzell and thirteen other Pueblo volunteers ate only the foods available to their ancestors before first contact with Europeans in 1540.  They started with the idea that Pueblo people had adapted over countless generations to the foods available in their local environment.  But now\, the imported and processed foods in modern diets means  “our food is like we are living in a foreign country.”  In her talk\, Swentzell will recount the dramatic results of this experiment on the physical\, mental\, and spiritual health of the participants.

SUMMARY:A Place Like No Other: Two Views of the New Mexico Landscape (at the State Capitol)
DESCRIPTION:A Place Like No Other: Two Views of the New Mexico Landscape is located at the Governor’s Gallery on the 4th floor of the State Capitol\, at the corner of Old Santa Fe Trail and Paseo de Peralta.  \nIn celebrating the 1917 founding of the New Mexico Museum of Art on Santa Fe’s historic Plaza\, it seems appropriate to highlight the work of two artists whose images of the state’s renowned beauty have helped define it in the public imagination: Sheldon Parsons and Eliot Porter. Both men came west and found themselves deeply inspired by the land\, skies\, and culture of New Mexico. Parsons quickly became an integral part of the Santa Fe art scene\, even serving as the first director of the Museum of Art. Porter gave up a career as a research scientist at Harvard to move to New Mexico and devote himself to photography\, maintaining a home and studio in Tesuque from the mid-1940s until his death in 1990. \nParsons’ paintings are saturated with the rich blues\, yellow golds\, and greens of New Mexico’s distinctive landscape while Porter\, known for his pioneering work in color photography\, photographed the state in austere black and white. Both artists looked to New Mexico’s most iconic features for their subject matter\, the stark and stunning land and the characteristic adobe of its traditional buildings. In the wake of the recent World War\, they chose to portray New Mexico as a rustic and pastoral land\, seemingly untouched by time.

DESCRIPTION:Bring your mat\, your mind and your body for a free monthly third Thursday Kundalini yoga class in conjunction with Voices of Counterculture in the Southwest. As was taught by Yogi Bhajan\, Kundalini yoga is an ancient technology of developing harmony in body\, mind and spirit through gentle yogic stretches\, energizing breathing and calming meditation. Classes are free (donations welcome)\, open to everybody and fun. Please bring a mat or a blanket to the Meem Community Room and arrive at least 5-10 minutes before class begins. \nClasses taught by Kirpal S.
