SUMMARY:Summer High School Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, we are offering a new\, two-week photography program for high school students. Starting on July 24th and ending August 4th\, this program is designed to treat the art of photography seriously\, regardless of what kind of camera you are using. Professional DSLRs to cell phone cameras\, all are welcome. Students will learn\, both in the lighting studio and out in the world\, to take control of their cameras and make images that are uniquely their own. The class will explore basic but powerful digital editing tools and concepts. They will also get to spend time exploring photographs in the Museum to learn how other photographers have composed a frame\, told a story\, and interpreted the world around them. This program is free due to the generous support of its sponsor\, Caroline Burnett. Space is limited to 12 students\, and registration is required.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Gallery Talk with the Curator\, Katherine Ware
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the galleries for an informal discussion by the Museum’s Curator of Photography\, Katherine Ware\, about her newest exhibition\, Manuel Carrillo: Mexican Modernist. Museum admission will be free all evening (5-7PM)\, and the talk will begin at 5:30 in the upstairs gallery. \n  \nMexican photographer Manuel Carrillo (1906-1989) turned to the camera fairly late in life\, joining the Club Fotográfico de México at the age of 49. He quickly found his voice by making images of everyday life throughout Mexico\, celebrating local culture and the human spirit. His work is an extension of Mexicanidad\, a movement begun in the 1920s to forge a Mexican national identity free of foreign influence. Stylistically\, however\, Carrillo was inspired by Mexican artists trained abroad and international artists who converged on Mexico during that fertile period. His interest in indigenous cultures and his use of bright sunlight to create compositions with dramatic shadows and bold geometric forms has roots in the photographic work of Edward Weston and Paul Strand\, American modernist photographers active in Mexico in the 1920s and 1930s. Rather than idealizing\, estheticizing\, or moralizing\, Carrillo portrays Mexico from the perspective of an affectionate observer\, transforming ordinary moments into expressions of quiet eloquence.

SUMMARY:Japanese Mask Making Demonstrations with Ichiyu Terai
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Japanese mask making demonstrations with noh mask maker Terai Ichiyu on June 1-4 in the Atrium.  A translator will be on hand to facilitate conversation with Mr. Terai. \nTerai-san likens mask making to “time travel” explaining that when he creates a character\, he feels connected to the generations of mask-makers who have crafted the same character before him. In creating a powerful mask sucha as a hannya\, Terai senses her energy\, enabling him to help the mask express its complex set of emotions: ferocious rage\, fear and sadness. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ghhúunayúkata / To Keep Them Warm: The Alaska Native Parka
DESCRIPTION:These unique garments embody the remarkable creativity\, craftsmanship\, and innovation of their makers\, past and present. As complex cultural expressions\, parkas are at once innovative and traditional\, a garment that harmoniously marries artistry\, function\, cultural meaning\, and Indigenous ingenuity. \nAt the heart of the exhibition are 20 parkas representing 6 Alaska Native communities: Yup’ik\, Iñupiaq\, Unangan\, Dena’ina\, Koyukon\, and St. Lawrence Island Yupik. The selection includes parkas from the mid-19th century to contemporary reinterpretations of this iconic garment\, illustrating the continuing vitality of this art form. \nA rich selection of Indigenous drawings\, photographic portraits\, and traditional dolls will provide context for how parkas are worn in ceremony\, hunting\, and daily use. These works underscore Native self-representation and the parka’s importance as a cultural signifier. Sewing tools\, themselves beautiful works of craftsmanship in walrus ivory\, wood\, or animal hide\, round out the exhibition content. \nThe exhibition will open May 21\, 2023\, and is organized by guest co-curators Suzi Jones\, PhD\, and Melissa Shaginoff (Ahtna/Paiute). \nShort promotional video of the exhibition may be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7_GyOxSqzo \nLeft: Fancy parka (Iñupiaq)\, ca. 1890. SUMMARY:Pecos Riverwalk Trail and Audio Tour Launch
DESCRIPTION:We invite community members to celebrate the new and improved Pecos Riverwalk Trail and audio tour! The Riverwalk Trail has been made possible in part through our collaboration with the Fort Sumer High School Art Department. We matched eight honors students each with one of our cedar benches\, and they painted different plants that were important to survival for the Indigenous people interred at the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. Through this trail you can learn about how nature influenced the history of this important place\, and you will get to see and imagine the trees and plants that were considered gifts of beauty and survival from the Creator for the Diné (Navajo) and the Ndé (Mescalero Apache). Enjoy each bench painted by young Fort Sumner artists and learn about the incredible history and use of each plant\, many of which are still found in this area. \nWe hope you will join us on this momentous day to dedicate each bench and hear a new chapter of history.
