New Mexico in particular has a rich tradition of women painters\, potters\, sculptors\, weavers\, photographers\, printmakers\, multi-media artists and even patrons of the arts. \nThe New Mexico Museum of Art Library and Archives is your resource for exploring art\, art history\, design and architecture.  The library open house is an informal opportunity for you to browse books and artist files\, ask questions\, exchange recommendations with the Librarian and see what’s new.  About 7500 books are available for browsing\, reading and creative inspiration.  We offer free Wifi if you wish to bring a laptop\, smartphone or tablet.  Drop in any time between 1-4pm. \nThe lobby and courtyard of the museum are food and drink friendly\, the library is just friendly. Please finish your food and drinks before entering the library.

SUMMARY:The Land that Enchants Me So: Picturing Popular Songs of New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Before radio and television\, when making music at home was the evening’s entertainment and playing the piano was considered an essential talent among the middle class\, sheet music was the music consumer’s gateway to the world.”  The New Mexico History Museum celebrates this era with sheet music of popular songs about the State of New Mexico\, dating from the mid-19th through the mid-20th centuries\, in the new exhibition The Land That Enchants Me So. The show spotlights graphically striking sheet-music covers published from 1840s through about 1960\, along with other printed materials\, sound recordings\, and memorabilia relating to New Mexico and its musical life. \n“At a time before everywhere in America was pretty much like everywhere else\, songs often gave voice to civic pride. During the 19th and early-20th centuries\, people felt that their own home town was a place worthy of singing about\,” said James M. Keller\, who co-curated the exhibition with Meredith Davidson\, the Museum’s Curator of Southwest Collections. “In the 19th and early-20th centuries\, publishers understood that potential sheet-music buyers judged pieces of music—like books—by their covers. And so\, they accordingly lavished care on the creation of vivid\, original art and design for the sheet music they issued.” \nThe decorative sheet music in the exhibit is drawn from the private collection assembled over the past three decades by James M. Keller\, whose collection focuses on historical popular music from the era of vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley. The guest co-curator of the show\, he is known to New Mexico’s music-lovers through his work as a staff critic at Pasatiempo/The Santa Fe New Mexican. He is also the Program Annotator of the New York Philharmonic\, where he has served since 1995 and occupies an endowed chair\, and (since 2000) of the San Francisco Symphony.

SUMMARY:Talk at the Museum by Christian Heinsen Accomplished work in rural communities of Northern Chile in the Altiplano
DESCRIPTION:In late 1990\, a group of young students (of which Cristian was one) met the Andean world through Amador Soto\, a missionary who served humble Aymara communities in the valleys\, Andean foothills and highlands of Arica and Parinacota. These fortuitous meetings led to the idea for partnering with small\, isolated communities to preserve the heritage and ancestral dignity bequeathed by their ancestors. The fundamental purpose of the Fundación is to achieve a happier and more sustainable world through preservation of the culture of rural Andean communities. \nThe Fundación’s works is based on a Heritage and Sustainable Development Model\, which integrates the following initiatives:  \n \n\n \nHeritage Conservation\n \nHeritage Learning (training workshops)\n \nPatrimonial Communication\n \nCreation of Shared Values\, through productive initiatives with communities \n\n  \nCornerstones\, co-sponsoring this talk with the New Mexico History Museum\, has much the same mission goals for our rural\, underserved communities in New Mexico and has enjoyed a collaborative relationship with the Fundación since 2010. These rural mountain communities mirror the Spanish Colonial settlements of Northern New Mexico. They’re built of adobe and are centered around the church which is the core of the community. \nCristian\, who was trained as a film maker\, joined with his wife\, Magdalena\, in the 1990s to found Fundación and has been learning on the job since those formative days. He has a degree in literature\, a master’s in documentary films\, and a master’s in business. \nAn informal reception will follow the talk.  \n

SUMMARY:“Him Old Ruins” Edgar Lee Hewett and the History of Pueblo Painting Lecture by Nancy Owen Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nancy Owen Lewis\, scholar in residence at the School for Advanced Research (SAR)\, will discuss Edgar Lee Hewett’s role in establishing the Southwest Indian Fair and the artists’ relationship with Hewett. \nArchaeologist Edgar Lee Hewett had a profound impact on art as it developed in New Mexico and beyond. During the early 1900s\, he established a school and museum system in Santa Fe\, today known as the School for Advanced Research and the Museum of New Mexico system. In addition to training the first generation of southwestern archaeologists\, he provided jobs and studio space for Santa Fe’s first resident artists and played a key role in the development of Pueblo painting. He provided support for young Pueblo artists such as Fred Kabotie\, and hosted the world’s first exhibition of Pueblo watercolor painting. His role in establishing the Southwest Indian Fair\, precursor to today’s Santa Fe Indian Market\, will be discussed\, and the artists’ relationship with Hewett will be examined.   \nSpace is limited. Drop in and make a few beads to represent a handful of indigenous individuals lost to violence. \nFor the most complete information – including video – on Luger’s proejct\, visit http://www.cannupahanska.com/mmiwqtbeadproject \nMissing and Murdered Indigenous Women\, Girls\, Queer and Trans People BEAD PROJECT: \n2” beads made from clay\, unfired are requested from our communities to complete a monumental beaded portrait which will be created by artist Cannupa Hanska Luger from a photograph taken by First Nations photographer Kali Spitzer. This collaboration with community acknowledges our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women\, Girls\, Queer and Trans people. In Canada alone\, the number of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women was at 4\,000 in 2016 as noted in research gathered by the Native Women’s Association of Canada.  \nWe are aware that the narrative of MMIWQT expands beyond a specific region\, and by starting here\, with acknowledging this number and this place for this specific portrait and creating collectively\, we can move forward and continue to address MMIWQT in all of our respective homelands. This community engagement is meant to activate our processing of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People through the action of doing and feeling in a collective effort to say ‘this is enough’. \n \nAs you create\, we ask you to hold awareness that each one of these beads represents an individual from our Indigenous communities that we have lost.

DESCRIPTION:La Ultima Exhibición\, curated by Augustine Romero\, features visual interpretations of Rudolfo Anaya’s celebrated book\, Bless Me\, Ultima (1972)-a portrait of life in rural New Mexico as seen through the eyes of a young boy during World War II. Anaya tells of the spiritual healer\, Ultima\, as she guides young Antonio on a magical and moral journey in this novel that has inspired artists for decades. Romero curated a previous iteration of this exhibition in 2006 at the South Broadway Cultural Center and the NHCC Art Museum is thrilled to host the re-imagined version twelve years later. \nFeatured artists include: Jesús ” Cimi” Alvarado\, George C’de Baca\, Sylvia Ortiz Domney\, Christian Michael Gallegos\, Roberto Gallegos\, Eric Garcia\, Kristina Gonzales\, Nacho Jaramillo\, Al Na’ir Lara\, Chisim Bernal Lujan\, Oscar Lozoya\, Chris Ray Melendez\, El Moisés\, Derrick Montez\, Paloma Paz Nava\, Gabriel Luis Powers\, Chris Rivera\, Rebecca H. Hernandez Rosser\, and Catalina Salinas. \nAugustine Romero is an acclaimed visual artist and the curator of the South Broadway Cultural Center and the Kimo Theater for the City of Albuquerque.

DESCRIPTION:This event for FOCA+P members will focus on the history and artistic and cultural influences that informed Zozobra. We will explore how Zozobra has been featured as a subject in the work of Southwestern artists from Shuster and Baumann to Tapia and Scholder and has been a reoccurring theme spanning from the early 20th century to today. It will cover the early history of Zozobra itself and focus on the cultural side of Zobora\, influences like 1930s horror films to Mexican indigenous tradition and go on to look at what Zozobra has come to mean as a cultural symbol in its own right. After the talk there will be a brief tour of Horizons where guests will be invited to deposite their own glooms in our very own gloom box\, on loan from the Kiwanis club. DESCRIPTION:Da Vinci—The Genius opens at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science in Albuquerque at 9am on Saturday\, February 10\, 2018.  This world class exhibition from Grande Exhibitions remains on display at the Museum daily from 9am-5pm through July 29\, 2018. \nDa Vinci – The Genius demonstrates the full scope of Leonardo da Vinci’s remarkable genius as an inventor\, artist\, anatomist\, sculptor\, engineer\, musician and architect. DESCRIPTION:Ever wanted to know what it’s like to work in an art museum? Artists\, art historians\, curators\, journalists and others have written about things that museums do or should do. The New Mexico Museum of Art Library and Archives has professional publications that explain how things are supposed to work as well as case studies that show what happens when things don’t go as planned. From censorship and theft to preservation and learning\, there are many stories in the library and archives. This would be a great time to come if you are seriously considering pursuing a career in a museum. \nThe library open house is an informal opportunity for you to browse books and artist files\, ask questions\, exchange recommendations with the Librarian and see what’s new.  About 7500 books are available for browsing\, reading and creative inspiration.  We offer free Wifi if you wish to bring a laptop\, smartphone or tablet.  Come any time between 1-4pm. \nThe lobby and courtyard of the museum are food and drink friendly\, the library is just friendly. Please finish your food and drinks before entering the library.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Christmas Revels: The 1919 New Mexico Mounted Police Raid on Santo Domingo Pueblo
DESCRIPTION:Leo Crane was a Bureau of Indian Affairs official who wrote two books about his experiences in Arizona and New Mexico from 1911 to 1928. His “Christmas Revels” chapter on a little-known incident in 1919 inspired me to seek additional information\, leading to the discovery of the remarkable resources in the Institute for Pueblo Indian Studies at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. The attempt by state militiamen to seize cattle rustlers during the Christmas day dance almost resulted in their massacre. The incident was a precursor of the united Pueblos’ struggle to defeat the Bursum Bill and preserve their lands and way of life in the 1920s. \n  \nJoe Sabatini was born in the Bronx\, but doesn’t admit to it because his family moved to Los Angeles following World War II. He obtained his Master’s Degree in Library Science from U.C.L.A in 1965. He came to New Mexico as a VISTA Volunteer working in Sandoval County. Following 5 years at the U.N.M. School of Law Library\, he joined the Albuquerque Public Library in 1973 as Head of Reference. He served as Main Library Manager from 1980 to July of 2000\, when he became the library manager at Special Collections\, the regional history and genealogy branch. Following his retirement in December 2008\, he volunteers in the Archives/Library of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center\, and is active in the Near North Valley Neighborhood Association.
