SUMMARY:Pueblo Pottery and the Pueblo Pottery Fund.
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion — Speakers: Bruce Bernstein\, Panel Discussant\, with artists Russell Sanchez and Milford Nahohai. Panelists will discuss the roots of the Pueblo Pottery Fund\, founded in 1922 and incorporated three years later as the Indian Arts Fund. The talk will focus on the Fund’s impact on those collecting Native American art and its effect on the lives of the artists and their descendants. \nBruce Bernstein is considered one of the leading authorities on Southwestern Native American art. Bernstein received his doctorate in anthropology from the University of New Mexico in 1993. A trained ethnologist\, he has worked as a curator and museum director both in Santa Fe and Washington\, DC. He currently serves as executive director of Ralph T. Coe Center for the Arts in Santa Fe. His numerous publications include Santa Fe Indian Market: A History of Native Arts and the Marketplace (Museum of New Mexico Press\, 2012). \nRussell Sanchez is a renowned potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo where he conscientiously and insightfully continues the long traditions of innovative pottery from his village. Russell’s work is found in private and public collections throughout the United States. With winning a prize for his first entry into Indian Market at age eight\, he clearly indicated his abilities and intentions of becoming one of the most important potters of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. He learned pottery making from the matriarchs of his village. \nMilford Nahohai is from Zuni Pueblo\, whose mother\, Josephine Nahohai\, was one of the first recipients of SAR’s artist fellowship award in 1985. Josephine and her olla maiden sisters danced the Zuni ollas back to life during their fellowship at SAR. Studying older pottery solidified Josephine’s memories\, strengthening the family’s resolve to return Zuni pottery to its traditional forms. \nPresentations and panel discussions will take place at St. Francis Auditorium. Space is limited. To reserve a seat in advance please go to https://sarweb.org/registration/register-public-talk-pueblo-pottery/ \nThis program is presented in partnership with the School for Advanced Research in honor of their 110th anniversary\, the Museum of Art’s 100th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of the Indian Arts Research Center (IARC) at SAR. \nFunding for this program is provided in part by a grant from the New Mexico Humanities Council.

SUMMARY:25th Annual César Chávez Day Fiesta
DESCRIPTION:Join us in honoring the life and legacy of César Chávez at the 25th annual César Chávez Day Fiesta\, with a march—La Marcha de Justicia—beginning at 10:30 am at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and ending at noon on the Center’s Plaza Mayor. Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community exhibits\, children’s activities and games\, food\, and live music. \n\n\nWe are proud to welcome Dolores Huerta to deliver our keynote speech and actor/composer/musician/activist Danny Valdez to share his experiences as a member of the United Farm Workers (UFW). Additionally\, the 2018 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! awards will be presented to people who have served the community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nDolores Huerta\, a native of Dawson\, NM\, was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, Huerta was recognized for her decades of ceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. \nDanny Valdez joined the UFW in his early years\, and later became a founding member of El Teatro Campesino\, helping to produce theatre and compose music that brought the message of the UFW to the farmworker. Valdez is an accomplished actor\, musician\, and composer; he may be best known for his roles in such classic movies as Zoot Suit and La Bamba. \nDuring the week leading up to this wonderful event\, a collaboration of student and community organizations will hold Farmworkers Awareness Week\, a three-day event honoring the legacy of the farmworker community through interactive activities\, information booths\, art displays\, and farmworker presentations. SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series One Hundred Years Ago and Now: What Is Santa Fe Style?
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Rasch will provide a pictorial banquet of beautiful architectural images spanning centuries of Pueblo\, Spanish\, and Anglo designs from ancient ruins in the southwest and Old-World prototypes to recently constructed buildings.  Each of the influential “voices” of Santa Fe Style architecture is defined and described within the evolving traditions of regional architecture today.  The romantic procession ends with queries about where the Style may develop in the 21st century\, the second century of inspiration and vigor.
