SUMMARY:Beadwork Adorns the World
DESCRIPTION:Glass beads are the ultimate migrants.  Where they start out is seldom where they end up.  No matter where they originate\, the locale that uses them makes them into something specific to their own world view. \nThis exhibition is about what happens to these beads when they arrive at their final destination\, whether it be the African continent (Botswana\, Cameroon\, the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Ghana\, Nigeria\, South Africa)\, to Borneo\, to Burma\, to India\, Native North America to Latin America (Mexico\, Bolivia to Ecuador).  However\, this exhibit is not actually about beads\, rather it is about the working beads resulting in Beadwork\, and what a collective of beads in a garment or an object reveals about the intentions of its makers or users.

SUMMARY:Bead work Adorns the World-Public Opening\, Sunday April 22\, 1-4 pm Opening
DESCRIPTION:Extraordinary how a small glass bead from the island of Murano (Venice\, Italy) or the mountains of Bohemia (Czech Republic) can travel around the world\, entering into the cultural life of people far distant.  \nGlass beads are the ultimate migrants. However\, this exhibit is not actually about beads\, rather it is about the working beads resulting in Beadwork\, and what a collective of beads in a garment or an object reveals about the intentions of its makers or use

SUMMARY:Son Como Son 25th Anniversary A Retrospective Celebration of Salsa in Albuquerque\, New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:This 25th anniversary concert is Son Como Son’s tribute to the rich lineage of Cuban music. It is a tribute to the dance—the dance between the Yoruban spiritual world and the Spanish colonialists\, the dance between the past and the future\, the dance where the ocean meets the desert. Most of all\, it is a tribute to the dancers of Albuquerque—to each and every one who has buoyed this ship for the past 25 years and helped to put Albuquerque on the salsa map. \nIn October 1992\, after building successful musical careers in Cuba and recording and traveling across the globe\, Daniel and César Bauvallet migrated from Havana to Albuquerque\, NM. Finding a thriving salsa scene in their new home\, the Bauvallet brothers jumped right in\, playing with a variety of bands in their first few months on the scene. Almost immediately\, their musical sensibilities began to influence the Latin music soundscape. \nIn the spring of 1993\, César formed his own band\, naming it Son Como Son (“They Are as They Are”)\, and coining the phrase “Salsa Cuban Style.” His vision was to organize an ensemble of skilled musicians\, eager to learn a distinctive form of salsa\, who would play his original compositions and arrangements that were stylistically Cuban. The players\, from a variety of musical backgrounds and levels of experience\, were all devoted to advancing musically and working together; virtually all the current members of Son Como Son have been with the band for at least 24 years. \nEl tiempo sigue su marcha sin parar\, solo perdura lo que es original. Lo que en un breve momento en la vida dejó una huella. (César Bauvallet) \nTickets: $24\, $25\, $27 w/ $2 discount for seniors/children 12 and younger\, and $3 discount for NHCC members \nThis event takes place in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre.

SUMMARY:Pueblo Pottery and the Pueblo Pottery Fund.
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion — Speakers: Bruce Bernstein\, Panel Discussant\, with artists Russell Sanchez and Milford Nahohai. Panelists will discuss the roots of the Pueblo Pottery Fund\, founded in 1922 and incorporated three years later as the Indian Arts Fund. The talk will focus on the Fund’s impact on those collecting Native American art and its effect on the lives of the artists and their descendants. \nBruce Bernstein is considered one of the leading authorities on Southwestern Native American art. Bernstein received his doctorate in anthropology from the University of New Mexico in 1993. A trained ethnologist\, he has worked as a curator and museum director both in Santa Fe and Washington\, DC. He currently serves as executive director of Ralph T. Coe Center for the Arts in Santa Fe. His numerous publications include Santa Fe Indian Market: A History of Native Arts and the Marketplace (Museum of New Mexico Press\, 2012). \nRussell Sanchez is a renowned potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo where he conscientiously and insightfully continues the long traditions of innovative pottery from his village. Russell’s work is found in private and public collections throughout the United States. With winning a prize for his first entry into Indian Market at age eight\, he clearly indicated his abilities and intentions of becoming one of the most important potters of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. He learned pottery making from the matriarchs of his village. \nMilford Nahohai is from Zuni Pueblo\, whose mother\, Josephine Nahohai\, was one of the first recipients of SAR’s artist fellowship award in 1985. Josephine and her olla maiden sisters danced the Zuni ollas back to life during their fellowship at SAR. Studying older pottery solidified Josephine’s memories\, strengthening the family’s resolve to return Zuni pottery to its traditional forms. \nPresentations and panel discussions will take place at St. Francis Auditorium. Space is limited. To reserve a seat in advance please go to https://sarweb.org/registration/register-public-talk-pueblo-pottery/ \nThis program is presented in partnership with the School for Advanced Research in honor of their 110th anniversary\, the Museum of Art’s 100th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of the Indian Arts Research Center (IARC) at SAR. \nFunding for this program is provided in part by a grant from the New Mexico Humanities Council.

SUMMARY:25th Annual César Chávez Day Fiesta
DESCRIPTION:Join us in honoring the life and legacy of César Chávez at the 25th annual César Chávez Day Fiesta\, with a march—La Marcha de Justicia—beginning at 10:30 am at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and ending at noon on the Center’s Plaza Mayor. Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community exhibits\, children’s activities and games\, food\, and live music. \n\n\nWe are proud to welcome Dolores Huerta to deliver our keynote speech and actor/composer/musician/activist Danny Valdez to share his experiences as a member of the United Farm Workers (UFW). Additionally\, the 2018 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! awards will be presented to people who have served the community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nDolores Huerta\, a native of Dawson\, NM\, was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, Huerta was recognized for her decades of ceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. \nDanny Valdez joined the UFW in his early years\, and later became a founding member of El Teatro Campesino\, helping to produce theatre and compose music that brought the message of the UFW to the farmworker. Valdez is an accomplished actor\, musician\, and composer; he may be best known for his roles in such classic movies as Zoot Suit and La Bamba. \nDuring the week leading up to this wonderful event\, a collaboration of student and community organizations will hold Farmworkers Awareness Week\, a three-day event honoring the legacy of the farmworker community through interactive activities\, information booths\, art displays\, and farmworker presentations. This special event will be held at the University of New Mexico Student Union Building-Atrium\, April 2 through April 4 from 11 am to 3:30 pm. \nFree public event \nMarch—10:30 amFiesta—12 noon-4 pm
