SUMMARY:Third Annual Bosque Redondo Memorial Gourd Dance Healing the Past for our Children’s Future
DESCRIPTION:Fort Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial is hosting their Third Annual Gourd Dance on Saturday May 12\, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Beginning at 8:00 p.m.\, Joe Tohonnie Jr. and the White Mountain Apache Crown Dancers will be performing their fire dance to close the ceremonies.  Gourd Dancing actually originated with the Kiowa Tribe. According to Kiowa Gourd Dance coordinator JJ Ahboah\, “in the time when humans could still communicate with animals\, a Kiowa man was separated from his tribe. Lost\, hungry\, and dehydrated\, he began to hear singing. Following the singing\, he came upon a Red Wolf standing upright. This Red Wolf shared songs and dances with the Kiowa man from sunrise to sunset. When the Kiowa man returned to his tribe\, he shared all of the songs and dances with them. This dance began as a warriors dance as well as to promote well-being within the tribe. Now it has evolved into a social dance\, because so many other tribes have adopted it.” The Navajo and the Mescalero Apache adopted Gourd Dancing in the mid 20th Century. Today\, Gourd Dances can be held for many purposes such as: return of veterans\, birthdays\, or in the case of Fort Sumner Historic Site\, to promote healing and strengthening of intertribal relations. Many Navajo and Mescalero Apache Elders are journeying from the Four Corners region and the area surrounding the Sacramento Mountains to be a part of this historic dance\, despite what their oral traditions have dictated. For many\, the oral traditions passed down from the generations held in captivity at Bosque Redondo Reservation\, have stated not to go back to Fort Sumner or speak of the atrocities that occurred. However\, the current generations understand that the contemporary tragedy occurring is the loss of cultural history with their youth.  Through this dance\, they are reclaiming that history.  We invite you and your families to join us on this momentous occasion.  \nAdditionally\, there will be respected speakers\, traditional foods\, and craft vendors from both the Mescalero Apache Tribe and the Navajo Nation present.  Admission is free. Please join us and let the healing begin.

SUMMARY:Beadwork Adorns the World
DESCRIPTION:Glass beads are the ultimate migrants.  Where they start out is seldom where they end up.  No matter where they originate\, the locale that uses them makes them into something specific to their own world view. \nThis exhibition is about what happens to these beads when they arrive at their final destination\, whether it be the African continent (Botswana\, Cameroon\, the Democratic Republic of Congo\, Ghana\, Nigeria\, South Africa)\, to Borneo\, to Burma\, to India\, Native North America to Latin America (Mexico\, Bolivia to Ecuador).  However\, this exhibit is not actually about beads\, rather it is about the working beads resulting in Beadwork\, and what a collective of beads in a garment or an object reveals about the intentions of its makers or users.

SUMMARY:Bead work Adorns the World-Public Opening\, Sunday April 22\, 1-4 pm Opening
DESCRIPTION:Extraordinary how a small glass bead from the island of Murano (Venice\, Italy) or the mountains of Bohemia (Czech Republic) can travel around the world\, entering into the cultural life of people far distant.  \nGlass beads are the ultimate migrants. However\, this exhibit is not actually about beads\, rather it is about the working beads resulting in Beadwork\, and what a collective of beads in a garment or an object reveals about the intentions of its makers or use

SUMMARY:Son Como Son 25th Anniversary A Retrospective Celebration of Salsa in Albuquerque\, New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:This 25th anniversary concert is Son Como Son’s tribute to the rich lineage of Cuban music. It is a tribute to the dance—the dance between the Yoruban spiritual world and the Spanish colonialists\, the dance between the past and the future\, the dance where the ocean meets the desert. Most of all\, it is a tribute to the dancers of Albuquerque—to each and every one who has buoyed this ship for the past 25 years and helped to put Albuquerque on the salsa map. \nIn October 1992\, after building successful musical careers in Cuba and recording and traveling across the globe\, Daniel and César Bauvallet migrated from Havana to Albuquerque\, NM. Finding a thriving salsa scene in their new home\, the Bauvallet brothers jumped right in\, playing with a variety of bands in their first few months on the scene. Almost immediately\, their musical sensibilities began to influence the Latin music soundscape. \nIn the spring of 1993\, César formed his own band\, naming it Son Como Son (“They Are as They Are”)\, and coining the phrase “Salsa Cuban Style.” His vision was to organize an ensemble of skilled musicians\, eager to learn a distinctive form of salsa\, who would play his original compositions and arrangements that were stylistically Cuban. The players\, from a variety of musical backgrounds and levels of experience\, were all devoted to advancing musically and working together; virtually all the current members of Son Como Son have been with the band for at least 24 years. \nEl tiempo sigue su marcha sin parar\, solo perdura lo que es original. Lo que en un breve momento en la vida dejó una huella. (César Bauvallet) \nTickets: $24\, $25\, $27 w/ $2 discount for seniors/children 12 and younger\, and $3 discount for NHCC members \nThis event takes place in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre.

SUMMARY:Upton Ethelbah\, Jr. (Greyshoes) - Finding Essence in Stone Friends of Indian Art Event
DESCRIPTION:Upton S. Ethelbah\, Jr. (Santa Clara Pueblo and White Mountain Apache)\, also known as Greyshoes\, sculpts contemporary\, stylized\, and flowing forms inspired by the aesthetic motifs and movements found in the ceremonial regalia and dances of his heritage. He is also known for his “essentialized” Native American medicine bears and a variety of other sacred animal representations. Greyshoes works exclusively in stone. A selection of unique stone originals are then chosen to be cast in bronze in limited editions. \n \nNote: you must be an FIA member to attend events.
