SUMMARY:Library Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Museum Library is proud to partner with the Sant Fe Book Arts group to bring you The Life Cycle of the Book\, an open house exhibition of exploded books.  These new works of art were created from discarded books that exemplify the variety of printing techniques employed over time by publishers.  Reveling in a book’s tangible aspects\, the show brings together 10 works created from books that engage different periods in art and celebrate the art of printing itself.  \nWe hope you’ll join us for this special opportunity to get to know your Museum Library and be inspired by the art in books and the book as art.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series: Encore Presentation The Civil War in the Far West
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans believe that the Civil War took place only in the East—Gettysburg\, Atlanta\, Appomattox—and that the fight involved only the North and the South. Beginning in the summer of 1861\, however\, the U.S. and Confederate armies clashed with each other and with Indigenous peoples in New Mexico and Arizona\, fighting for control over the larger West. Drawing from her Pulitzer Prize-finalist book\, The Three-Cornered War\, Megan Kate Nelson will explain what was at stake for all three groups in the Civil War in the West; how the conflict evolved between 1861 and 1868; and the print\, material\, and visual sources she consulted to uncover the lived experiences of the war’s combatants and civilians in this region. \nMegan Kate Nelson is a historian and writer\, with a BA from Harvard and a PhD in American Studies from the University of Iowa. Her most recent book\, The Three-Cornered War: The Union\, the Confederacy\, and Native Peoples in the Fight for the West (Scribner 2020) was a finalist for the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in History. She writes about the Civil War\, the U.S. West\, and American landscapes of memory for The New York Times\, Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, Smithsonian Magazine\, Preservation Magazine\, and Civil War Times. Scribner will publish her next book\, Saving Yellowstone: Exploration and Preservation in Reconstruction America\, in March 2022. \nYouTube Link:  https://bit.ly/3oiau3b \nDonations Welcome \n

SUMMARY:Summer High School Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, we are offering a new\, two-week photography program for high school students. Starting on July 24th and ending August 4th\, this program is designed to treat the art of photography seriously\, regardless of what kind of camera you are using. Professional DSLRs to cell phone cameras\, all are welcome. Students will learn\, both in the lighting studio and out in the world\, to take control of their cameras and make images that are uniquely their own. The class will explore basic but powerful digital editing tools and concepts. They will also get to spend time exploring photographs in the Museum to learn how other photographers have composed a frame\, told a story\, and interpreted the world around them. This program is free due to the generous support of its sponsor\, Caroline Burnett. Space is limited to 12 students\, and registration is required.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Gallery Talk with the Curator\, Katherine Ware
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the galleries for an informal discussion by the Museum’s Curator of Photography\, Katherine Ware\, about her newest exhibition\, Manuel Carrillo: Mexican Modernist. Museum admission will be free all evening (5-7PM)\, and the talk will begin at 5:30 in the upstairs gallery. \n  \nMexican photographer Manuel Carrillo (1906-1989) turned to the camera fairly late in life\, joining the Club Fotográfico de México at the age of 49. He quickly found his voice by making images of everyday life throughout Mexico\, celebrating local culture and the human spirit. His work is an extension of Mexicanidad\, a movement begun in the 1920s to forge a Mexican national identity free of foreign influence. Stylistically\, however\, Carrillo was inspired by Mexican artists trained abroad and international artists who converged on Mexico during that fertile period. His interest in indigenous cultures and his use of bright sunlight to create compositions with dramatic shadows and bold geometric forms has roots in the photographic work of Edward Weston and Paul Strand\, American modernist photographers active in Mexico in the 1920s and 1930s. Rather than idealizing\, estheticizing\, or moralizing\, Carrillo portrays Mexico from the perspective of an affectionate observer\, transforming ordinary moments into expressions of quiet eloquence.

SUMMARY:Japanese Mask Making Demonstrations with Ichiyu Terai
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Japanese mask making demonstrations with noh mask maker Terai Ichiyu on June 1-4 in the Atrium.  A translator will be on hand to facilitate conversation with Mr. Terai. \nTerai-san likens mask making to “time travel” explaining that when he creates a character\, he feels connected to the generations of mask-makers who have crafted the same character before him. In creating a powerful mask sucha as a hannya\, Terai senses her energy\, enabling him to help the mask express its complex set of emotions: ferocious rage\, fear and sadness. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ghhúunayúkata / To Keep Them Warm: The Alaska Native Parka
DESCRIPTION:These unique garments embody the remarkable creativity\, craftsmanship\, and innovation of their makers\, past and present. As complex cultural expressions\, parkas are at once innovative and traditional\, a garment that harmoniously marries artistry\, function\, cultural meaning\, and Indigenous ingenuity. \nAt the heart of the exhibition are 20 parkas representing 6 Alaska Native communities: Yup’ik\, Iñupiaq\, Unangan\, Dena’ina\, Koyukon\, and St. Lawrence Island Yupik. The selection includes parkas from the mid-19th century to contemporary reinterpretations of this iconic garment\, illustrating the continuing vitality of this art form. \nA rich selection of Indigenous drawings\, photographic portraits\, and traditional dolls will provide context for how parkas are worn in ceremony\, hunting\, and daily use. These works underscore Native self-representation and the parka’s importance as a cultural signifier. Sewing tools\, themselves beautiful works of craftsmanship in walrus ivory\, wood\, or animal hide\, round out the exhibition content. \nThe exhibition will open May 21\, 2023\, and is organized by guest co-curators Suzi Jones\, PhD\, and Melissa Shaginoff (Ahtna/Paiute). \nShort promotional video of the exhibition may be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7_GyOxSqzo \nLeft: Fancy parka (Iñupiaq)\, ca. 1890.
