DESCRIPTION:The weeklong collaboration culminates in two public events. The Museum is joining with AMP Concerts to present a celebration of Lima’s street music\, art\, and food in in the Santa Fe Railyard on the evening of Friday\, June 30. The day includes a free concert by La Chamba\, a Peruvian chicha style band from Los Angeles. The Museum will also provide tables set up with live screen printing with the artists\, and a pop up art market. \nOn Sunday\, July 1\, the Museum will provide artist talks\, live screen printing and mobile mural painting. \nSaturday\, June 30\, at the Santa Fe Railyard \n  \n \n\n \n\n \nStarting at 6 p.m.: Live screen printing with Amapolay from Peru and local artists Jamison Chas Banks\, Heidi Brandow\, Moira Garcia\, Manuel Ramirez\, members of the Alas de Agua collective\, and Baca Print Shop. Paper provided\, bring your own T-shirts or bandanas.\n\n\n  \n \n\n \n\n \nPop up artist market\n\n\n  \nAmapolay is an artist collective in the gráfica popular tradition headed by Carol Fernandez and Fernando Castro. Using screen printing and hand lettering as their medium\, Amapolay creates posters\, t-shirts\, and stickers to raise awareness and promote solidarity among internal migrant populations in Lima. The city of Lima has grown exponentially\, especially with displacement of communities from rural areas during the years of the Internal Armed Conflict. Often living in shantytowns and other marginalized areas of the city\, these communities face economic\, cultural and racial discrimination.  Through workshops and street fairs\, Amapolay works to elevate pride among immigrant youth in Lima and promote the unique culture that mixes rural heritage with urban life. \nAmapolay will be collaborating with local artists: Jamison Chas Banks\, Heidi Brandow\, Moira Garcia\, Manuel Ramirez\, John Santos\, and members of the Alas de Agua collective. \nThe events are funded by the International Folk Art Foundation and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation Director’s Leadership Fund\, AMP Concerts\, New Mexico Culture Squared (NMC2). \n

Please join us for our bimonthly lecture series for creative professionals\, and listen as Irvin Trujillo and his daughter Emily share the Rio Grande Weaving tradition with us.  \nThis time honored craft has been kept alive by Irvin’s family in the small town of Chimayo\, New Mexico\, since the middle of the 18th century. Irvin\, a seventh generation weaver\, is an NEA National Heritage Fellow and is considered to be a master of traditional design and history of weaving from Northern New Mexico. With his wife Lisa\, also a master weaver\, they run the Centinela Traditional Arts (http://centinela@newmexico.com) weaving studio in Chimayo. \nIrvin and Emily will present work from his family dating back to 1830. Made the traditional way\, his early works were polished redward. Today he is famous for his precisely carved puzzle pots\, swirl pots\, and pots with circular or hexagonal holes. \nCandelario has won numerous awards including first place at the SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market. His work was also included in the 2002 exhibit and catalog Changing Hands: Art without Reservation at the American Craft Museum in New York City. \nDon’t forget\, Wednesdays are free admission for NM Seniors!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in gallery discussion of Frederick Hammersley’s computer drawings from the late 1960’s with Nancy Zastudil\, administrative director of the Frederick Hammersley Foundation. Zastudil will discuss these early examples of an artist working with a computer to create original artwork. \nIn 1968\, after Frederick Hammersley moved to Albuquerque\, he took an Art1 class at the University of New Mexico.  Written in the computer programming language Fortran\, Art1 was one of the first computer programs designed for visual artists. SUMMARY:Bosque Redondo Memorial: Commemorating 150 Years since the Treaty of 1868
DESCRIPTION:  \nFriday June 8th will offer a once in a lifetime opportunity for Navajo and Mescalero Apache visitors to shape a museum’s interpretation of their cultural history. On Saturday\, June 9th visitors will have a chance to participate in a recreation of the Navajo return to the homeland to promote solidarity and reconciliation. \nAlso on Saturday\, the 150th Treaty celebration will host cultural dances\, respected speakers from tribal and state government\, along with tribal elders sharing their oral traditions as they pertain to the hardships and resilience of life both during the reservation era as well as the post reservation era.  Traditional foods and artisans will be on site in support the event and the culture. \nAfter the event\, visitors will have the option to participate in a 6.5-mile walk/run\, led by DCA\, from Bosque Redondo Memorial to Fort Sumner High School in honor of the Navajo return to the homeland.  Upon arriving at the high school\, visitors can choose whether to continue the 350-mile walk back to Window Rock\, AZ or remain at the high school for refreshments.

DESCRIPTION:Pueblo Revival architecture is a building style begun in the early part of the 20th century that is rooted in concepts of Hispanic and Pueblo architecture\, specifically as seen in the Mission churches of New Mexico.  The New Mexico Museum of Art building is a prime example of this style. Visitors to this event will have access to a variety of sources that show the evolution of the Pueblo Revival style and the Spanish colonial revival furniture that goes with it. \n \nThe library open house is an informal opportunity for you to browse books and artist files\, ask questions\, exchange recommendations with the Librarian and see what’s new.  About 7500 books are available for browsing\, reading and creative inspiration.  We offer free Wifi if you wish to bring a laptop\, smartphone or tablet.  Come any time between 1-4pm.\nThe lobby and courtyard of the museum are food and drink friendly\, the library is just friendly. Please finish your food and drinks before entering the library.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Padre Martinez and New Mexico’s First Printed Publications\, 1834-1846
DESCRIPTION:While books were printed in Mexico during the sixteenth century\, every bit of print was imported to New Mexico before 1834.  When one finally arrived\, Padre Antonio Jose Martinez 1793-1867 quickly bought it and took it to Taos\, where he printed some 16 publications before the arrival of the Americans in 1846.  These fall into the categories of textbooks\, legal texts\, religious texts and what might be called civics texts.  All of these were produced for the benefit of his fellow citizens at a time when books were still rare and expensive.  One or more copies of almost all of these titles have survived.  While of these titles  would best be described as pamphlets or booklets\, but a few are more substantial.  The talk will describe these books and their contents\, devoting attention to what we can learn from them about Padre Martinez activities during what might be called his peak years\, his sources and his skill as a textbook writer\, and the level of his students.

SUMMARY:Atomic Histories  Remembering New Mexico’s Nuclear Past
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in World War II with the first research and fabrication of nuclear weapons in Los Alamos for the Manhattan Project and the first atomic bomb test at the Trinity site near Alamogordo\, New Mexico’s story is linked with the history of nuclear science and innovation. As soon as the war was over and the Cold War began\, two national laboratories were founded in Los Alamos and Albuquerque that advanced the technologies of war and later\, would pioneer cutting edge physics\, chemistry and other scientific fields. Mines in the Grants Mineral Belt were opened in the western part of the state that unearthed the fuel for both weapons and new sources of energy. Eventually\, the state was chosen to be the site of disposal for nuclear waste byproducts at the Waste Isolation Pilot Project in Carlsbad.  A new uranium enrichment plant has opened in Eunice. Old projects ended\, and new challenges would emerge\, but in the 21st century\, New Mexico is at the forefront of our nation’s nuclear scientific endeavors. \nThis exhibit explores the most famous events\, sometimes little known stories\, and inventions born here which impact our lives\, and helps to recognize the remarkable contributions of thousands of people involved in writing New Mexico’s Atomic Histories for the last 75 years. What’s New in New: Selections from the Carol Warren Collection\, highlights the collection donated to the Museum by Carol Warren\, who was a volunteer in the Collections Department for more than 20 years. \nThe collection consists of over 200 works of art\, including paintings\, pottery\, jewelry and textiles from some of Santa Fe’s most prominent contemporary artists. A selection of this collection will be on exhibit and will include pieces created by renowned artists such as Tony Abeyta\, Tammy Garcia\, Dan Namingha\, and Jody Naranjo. \nThe exhibition\, co-curated by\, C.L. Kieffer Nail\, Antonio Chavarria\, and Valerie Verzuh\, will not only highlight outstanding contemporary artists\, but it will also feature multigenerational artists by including work of artists within the same family that have crafted their trade alongside each other. \n“By displaying pieces made by related artists\, we hope to demonstrate ways in which Native artists inspire each other through instruction as well as how individual artists exhibit their own identity through what is essentially a family practice\,” said curator C. L. Kieffer Nail. \nIn accepting new items\, whether they were made yesterday or 12\,000 years ago\, museum staff consider various issues such as curatorial collecting objectives\, gaps in collections\, potential future use of the objects such as publication and exhibition\, storage limitations and special preservation requirements. \nThe Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology collections inspire appreciation for and promote knowledge of the diverse native arts\, histories\, languages\, and cultures of the Greater Southwest. This mission is made possible through the active acquisition of material culture that contributes to an understanding of the peoples that made them. \nThe creative talents of Native artists in the past\, present and future\, give purpose to the MIAC. This is why it continues to collect and preserve art and artifacts made by tribal artists from all time periods. It endeavors to educate visitors about ancient yet living Native cultures\, and provide Indian artists with examples of their ancestors’ gifts. \nThe accessioned collections of the museum are made possible by the generosity of donors and the cultivation of such by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and its affiliated support groups. \n
