SUMMARY:Pueblos of New Mexico\, by Ana Pacheco
DESCRIPTION:As early as 1851\, photographers journeyed along the arduous Santa Fe Trail on horseback and in covered wagons on a quest to capture the magnificent vistas on film. In the ever-changing light of New Mexico’s landscape\, they photographed the faces of the Pueblo People and helped to document their ancient\, unimaginable world. They became witness to millennia of history. \nNew Mexico’s first inhabitants are believed to have descended from the Anasazi\, the largely nomadic group that settled along the Colorado Plateau around 200 AD. Most likely\, drought conditions brought the population centers of the Anasazi villages located in the Four Corners of Colorado\, Utah\, Arizona\, and New Mexico to settle along the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico and the Mogollon Rim of Arizona in 1300 AD.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Mars Comes Into Focus
DESCRIPTION:For Immediate Release: July 18\, 2018 (Albuquerque\, New Mexico) – In the coming weeks\, the planet Mars will be closer to the Earth than it will be again for decades. For its First Friday evening event August 3\, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) will offer information about the Red Planet and a possibility to see it through telescopes. With the extension of Da Vinci — The Genius through Aug. 29\, this will also be the final First Friday offering reduced admission prices before the exhibition ends. \nOn Aug. 3 from 5:30 – 9 p.m.\, admission to Da Vinci — The Genius is discounted by $5\, making the final admission charge: Adults $17\, Seniors $15 & Children $10. Admission to the museum’s permanent exhibits (excluding Da Vinci — The Genius)\, is $5 per person\, a $3 savings off the usual adult price. \nDa Vinci – The Genius demonstrates the full scope of Leonardo da Vinci’s remarkable genius as an inventor\, artist\, anatomist\, sculptor\, engineer\, musician and architect. Guests will enjoy many unique pieces including life-size machine inventions\, entertaining animations of da Vinci’s most notable Renaissance works\, and an eye-opening\, in-depth analysis of his most famous piece\, “Mona Lisa.” Visitors will be able to push\, pull\, crank\, and interact with many of these exhibits for a hands-on understanding of the scientific principles behind them. The exhibition has been extended until Aug. 29\, 2018. \n“The orbits of Earth and Mars are not perfect circles\, so the distance between the two planets is not the same when they reach their closest positions\,” explains NMMNHS space science director Jim Greenhouse. “At 35\,785\,000 miles July 30\, this is the closest Mars has been since 2003 or will be until 2050\, although it will be almost as close a few times before then.” \nAstronomers were looking forward to this close separation of the planets as an opportunity to see Mars’ surface in greater detail through telescopes. However\, an unprecedented dust storm is currently blocking most of the surface from view\, making the planet look like a featureless orange orb. It remains to be seen if the storm will clear in time for the close approach. \nIn case Mars’ atmosphere does clear\, several telescopes will be available in front of the museum. Representatives from the Albuquerque Astronomical Society and Rio Rancho Astronomical Society will offer telescopic views of the Red Planet if the sky is clear. Both clubs will also have table displays inside the museum telling about their programs. Additionally\, those who purchase admission to the da Vinci exhibition will be able to look through the observatory telescope. Because the planets move so slowly relative to each other\, the view of Mars between July 30 and Aug. 3 will be the same. The observing part of this event will be canceled if the sky is cloudy. \nEven if the planet’s surface can’t be seen through telescopes\, several table displays in the museum atrium will offer timely information about Mars August 3 only: \n \n\n \nDr. Larry Crumpler will explain the latest information from the Opportunity Rover and how the dust storm has put the mission in jeopardy;\n \nUNM Institute of Meteoritics will show a very rare meteorite which originated on Mars and explain how a piece of that planet made it to ours;\n \nSalinas Pueblo Missions National Monument will show how they received a Dark Sky Park designation and preview upcoming night sky programs;\n \nNASA Solar System Ambassador John Brandt will share videos and handouts about the Mars InSight mission\, which is the latest Martian lander. Find out more from NASA’s webpage: https://mars.nasa.gov/insight/\n\nThe DynaTheater will be showing America’s Musical Journey. In America’s musical cities\, every chord\, every riff\, every bang of a drum tells a story. These stories come together to create a soundtrack for the American experience — a soundtrack that showcases the nation’s diversity and its collision of cultures\, culminating in a unique blend of sound\, music and innovation unlike anywhere else in the world. During First Friday\, admission to this program is $5 per person. The show begins at 6:30 p.m. and lasts one hour. The DynaTheater concession stand will be open before the showing and close when the video begins. \nThe Planetarium will present Fractal Friday at the usual times of 6\, 7\, 8 and 9 p.m. with the normal admission of: Adults $10\, Seniors $7 & Children (3-12) $5. Shows typically sell out in advance\, so get your tickets early on the Fractal Foundation’s website: fractalfoundation.org \nThe Nature Works store will be selling fascinating da Vinci merchandise and other unique gifts from 5:30 – 8 p.m. The Hope Café will be open continuously from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. that day\, so you can enjoy dinner while waiting for the museum to reopen (only the café entrance will be open from 5 – 5:30). \nCrack the da Vinci code and get a special discount! A word based upon a da Vinci invention will unlock a 10 percent discount on a da Vinci audio tour when deliberately said at the tour rental kiosk. The code word for August is “Scafandro.” \nLink to this release & image: \nMedia Contact: Mary Ann Hatchitt\, 505-681-4014\, mahatchitt@outlook.com \n   \nAbout the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science: http://www.nmnaturalhistory.org. Established in 1986\, the mission of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is to preserve and interpret the distinctive natural and scientific heritage of our state through extraordinary collections\, research\, exhibits\, and programs designed to ignite a passion for lifelong learning. SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Spanish Colonial Women and the Law: Complaints\, Lawsuits and Criminal Behavior
DESCRIPTION:Women in early eighteenth century Spanish Colonial New Mexico had rights and privileges that were not enjoyed by other women in North America until the late nineteenth century. Under Spanish law women were considered separate entities and valuable members of Spanish society. Dr. Tigges’s lecture will show that they could own property\, inherit in their own name\, and act as court witnesses. In particular\, they could make accusations and denunciations to the local alcalde mayor and governor\, which they frequently did.  In doing so\, these Spanish colonial women provided an important legacy for future generations. \n  \nLinda Tigges\, PhD. is an author and retired land planner.  While working for the City of Santa Fe in the 1980s and 1990s\, she assisted in drafting the City’s Archaeological Review Committee ordinance and amendments to the Historic District Ordinance\, and staffed both groups.  She also prepared City publications on architectural history\, the plaza\, acequias and neighborhoods.  In addition\, she worked on development review for master plans and annexation applications. As a private sector land planner in the 1980s and 1900s\, her work included preparing archival reports for the Archaeological Review Committee and neighborhood and land planning.

SUMMARY:"Let’s Take a Look!" MIAC Curators Examine Your Treasures
DESCRIPTION:Curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology gather in lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. They attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes\, the discussion among the curators may become as much – or more informative – than the identification of the artifact. \nCurators cannot appraise any items but can refer you to resources that will. \nFor more information\, visit this page: http://indianartsandculture.org/lets-take-a-look

SUMMARY:Tech And The West Symposium
DESCRIPTION:TECH AND THE WEST\nJuly 13 -14\, 2018 \nTech and the West is a two-year initiative presented as part of the recent world premiere of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs and the 2018 production of Doctor Atomic. Continuing the Opera’s commitment to engaging community and broadening the experience and understanding of opera\, Tech and the West uses the themes of these productions as the baseline for an intellectual exploration through exhibits\, concerts\, and symposia.  \nMany minds will come together for Tech and the West to facilitate and participate in discussions – composers\, scientists\, designers\, directors\, historians\, and lecturers\, among others. Related Events will explore how and if these two operas of biographically-inspired fiction contribute to the historical truth. Participants will also analyze the similar nature of Steve Jobs and Robert Oppenheimer: how these two monumental influencers wanted control of their worlds and creations yet also desired a greater understanding of the world around them. \n \nSYMPOSIUM SCHEDULE\n \nSATURDAY\, JULY 14\, 2018\nLensic Performing Arts Center 211 W San Francisco St. Santa Fe\, NM 87501 \n \n10:00 AM\n \nTHE MYSTERY AND MYSTIQUE OF ROBERT OPPENHEIMER\nPresenter: Richard Rhodes \nRobert Oppenheimer\, the charismatic first director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory\, has become an almost mythical embodiment of the World War II Manhattan Project to develop the first atomic bombs. The Sellars-Adams opera Doctor Atomic is one manifestation of the phenomenon. Who was this man? What about him has led to such mythification? Did he\, his work\, his character support such a burden of history? Richard Rhodes\, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb and three other volumes of nuclear history\, will explore these questions in a Saturday morning lecture.   \n \n1:00 PM\n \nDELIVERING LITTLE BOY: CAPTAIN NOLAN\, THE MANHATTAN PROJECT\, AND THE DAWN OF THE NUCLEAR AGE\nNew Mexico History Museum 113 Lincoln Avenue Santa Fe\, NM 87501 \nPresenter: Dr. James Nolan In this lecture\, sociologist James L. Nolan\, Jr. will discuss the unusual journey of his grandfather\, Dr. James F. Nolan\, a radiologist and obstetric gynecologist who was on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos\, New Mexico. Among other roles\, Nolan ran the base hospital at Los Alamos and escorted the first atomic bomb\, “Little Boy\,” from Los Alamos to Tinian Island\, where it was assembled and put aboard the Enola Gay for its fateful flight to Hiroshima on August 6\, 1945. This talk will tell the intriguing story of an individual who participated in key historical events associated with the dawn of the nuclear age. \nJames L. Nolan\, Jr. is a professor of sociology at Williams College. His areas of interest are comparative law\, law and society\, technology and social change\, and historical and comparative sociology. He holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Virginia. He is currently working on a book titled “Delivering Little Boy.” \n \n2:00 PM\n \nEPICENTER: LOS ALAMOS DURING THE MANHATTAN PROJECT\nModerator:  Theresa Strottman Panelists:  Dr. James F. Nolan \n \n3:30 PM\n \nCLOSING ADDRESS: A PERIL\, BUT ALSO A GREAT HOPE\nDr. Hugh Gusterson Some of the most important physicists of the twentieth century worked on the Manhattan Project.  After the end of World War II they split between those who saw in nuclear weapons a pathway to peace (“a peril but also a great hope” in Oppenheimer’s words) and those who prophesied doom. How are we to understand this debate in the second nuclear age?” \n  \nTickets available at: \nhttps://www.santafeopera.org/discover/symposium/tech-and-the-west \nSeating is limited-Bottled water only please.
