SUMMARY:Joe Pfeiffer: My Long Journey
DESCRIPTION:Artist Jacob Pfeiffer’s long journey covers 80-plus years and two continents. During the course of his amazing life\, he developed his artistic talent\, painting scenes that show the pioneer days through contemporary times.  \nPfeiffer\, who moved to Las Cruces in 2013\, specializes in oil painting on canvas and linen. His works in the show feature scenes of Native Americans and early settlers\, animals\, and even scenes of local sites like the Museum and the Las Cruces Farmers’ & Crafts Market. There are 26 included in the show. \nGrowing up in Romania\, Pfeiffer began drawing pictures of animals as a young child. Pfeiffer came to the United States when he was 19\, worked at various jobs and took art classes at night. Soon\, a prominent Cincinnati gallery offered him a solo show that was a great success. \nPfeiffer’s work has evolved over the years\, depending on the subject matter. He has received dozens of awards and his work has been displayed in galleries all over the country.

DESCRIPTION:The Santa Fe Desert Chorale in partnership with Caminos del Inka instrumentalists flutist Jake Fridkis\, who holds a Master of Music degree from Yale University\, and Adriana Voirin DeCosta who studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica in her native Buenos Aires and received her Bachelor of Music (Performance and Education) from SMU\, summa cum laude\, will lead the two interactive “instrument petting zoo” sessions at the New Mexico History Museum. \nFamilies will be taught about the history and evolution of flutes and percussion instruments and their role as communication tools. The participants will have the opportunity to play the indigenous instruments under the instruction and supervision of these two established musicians. \nChildren will take home replicas of the flutes to continue their study. DESCRIPTION:As early as 1851\, photographers journeyed along the arduous Santa Fe Trail on horseback and in covered wagons on a quest to capture the magnificent vistas on film. In the ever-changing light of New Mexico’s landscape\, they photographed the faces of the Pueblo People and helped to document their ancient\, unimaginable world. They became witness to millennia of history. \nNew Mexico’s first inhabitants are believed to have descended from the Anasazi\, the largely nomadic group that settled along the Colorado Plateau around 200 AD. DESCRIPTION:For Immediate Release: July 18\, 2018 (Albuquerque\, New Mexico) – In the coming weeks\, the planet Mars will be closer to the Earth than it will be again for decades. For its First Friday evening event August 3\, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) will offer information about the Red Planet and a possibility to see it through telescopes. With the extension of Da Vinci — The Genius through Aug. 29\, this will also be the final First Friday offering reduced admission prices before the exhibition ends. \nOn Aug. 3 from 5:30 – 9 p.m.\, admission to Da Vinci — The Genius is discounted by $5\, making the final admission charge: Adults $17\, Seniors $15 & Children $10. Admission to the museum’s permanent exhibits (excluding Da Vinci — The Genius)\, is $5 per person\, a $3 savings off the usual adult price.  \nDa Vinci – The Genius demonstrates the full scope of Leonardo da Vinci’s remarkable genius as an inventor\, artist\, anatomist\, sculptor\, engineer\, musician and architect. Guests will enjoy many unique pieces including life-size machine inventions\, entertaining animations of da Vinci’s most notable Renaissance works\, and an eye-opening\, in-depth analysis of his most famous piece\, “Mona Lisa.” Visitors will be able to push\, pull\, crank\, and interact with many of these exhibits for a hands-on understanding of the scientific principles behind them. The exhibition has been extended until Aug. 29\, 2018. \n“The orbits of Earth and Mars are not perfect circles\, so the distance between the two planets is not the same when they reach their closest positions\,” explains NMMNHS space science director Jim Greenhouse. “At 35\,785\,000 miles July 30\, this is the closest Mars has been since 2003 or will be until 2050\, although it will be almost as close a few times before then.” \nAstronomers were looking forward to this close separation of the planets as an opportunity to see Mars’ surface in greater detail through telescopes. However\, an unprecedented dust storm is currently blocking most of the surface from view\, making the planet look like a featureless orange orb. It remains to be seen if the storm will clear in time for the close approach. \nIn case Mars’ atmosphere does clear\, several telescopes will be available in front of the museum. Representatives from the Albuquerque Astronomical Society and Rio Rancho Astronomical Society will offer telescopic views of the Red Planet if the sky is clear. Both clubs will also have table displays inside the museum telling about their programs. Additionally\, those who purchase admission to the da Vinci exhibition will be able to look through the observatory telescope. Because the planets move so slowly relative to each other\, the view of Mars between July 30 and Aug. 3 will be the same. The observing part of this event will be canceled if the sky is cloudy. \nEven if the planet’s surface can’t be seen through telescopes\, several table displays in the museum atrium will offer timely information about Mars August 3 only: \n \n\n \nDr. Larry Crumpler will explain the latest information from the Opportunity Rover and how the dust storm has put the mission in jeopardy;\n \nUNM Institute of Meteoritics will show a very rare meteorite which originated on Mars and explain how a piece of that planet made it to ours;\n \nSalinas Pueblo Missions National Monument will show how they received a Dark Sky Park designation and preview upcoming night sky programs;\n \nNASA Solar System Ambassador John Brandt will share videos and handouts about the Mars InSight mission\, which is the latest Martian lander. SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Spanish Colonial Women and the Law: Complaints\, Lawsuits and Criminal Behavior
DESCRIPTION:Women in early eighteenth century Spanish Colonial New Mexico had rights and privileges that were not enjoyed by other women in North America until the late nineteenth century. Under Spanish law women were considered separate entities and valuable members of Spanish society. Dr. Tigges’s lecture will show that they could own property\, inherit in their own name\, and act as court witnesses. In particular\, they could make accusations and denunciations to the local alcalde mayor and governor\, which they frequently did.  In doing so\, these Spanish colonial women provided an important legacy for future generations. \n  \nLinda Tigges\, PhD. is an author and retired land planner.  While working for the City of Santa Fe in the 1980s and 1990s\, she assisted in drafting the City’s Archaeological Review Committee ordinance and amendments to the Historic District Ordinance\, and staffed both groups.  She also prepared City publications on architectural history\, the plaza\, acequias and neighborhoods.  In addition\, she worked on development review for master plans and annexation applications. As a private sector land planner in the 1980s and 1900s\, her work included preparing archival reports for the Archaeological Review Committee and neighborhood and land planning.

SUMMARY:Creating Tradition - at Epcot Center
DESCRIPTION:This special MIAC exhibition – located at Disney World’s Epcot Center (Orlando\, FL) – allows visitors to explore the artistry of American Indian communities and learn about traditional Native influences. \n“Creating Tradition: Innovation and Change in American Indian Art” showcases authentic\, historical Native artifacts alongside contemporary works of American Indian art—demonstrating examples of cultural traditions which have been handed down through generations. \nNative communities from 7 geographic regions across the United States are included in the gallery. Their art represents the richness\, depth and diversity of Native cultures past and present. Among the featured artists with works on display are fashion designer Loren Aragon (Acoma Pueblo)\, noted doll-maker Glenda McKay (Ingalik-Athabascan) and Juanita Growing Thunder (Assiniboine Sioux) from the Growing Thunder family of Montana. \nThis collection is made possible through the collaboration of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington\, D.C.

SUMMARY:How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci: Author Michael Gelb The Brain: It’s More Than You Think
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed author Michael J. Gelb will be the first speaker in a new lecture series being launched by the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science\, entitled “The Brain: It’s More Than You Think.”  Gelb will speak July 26\, three days before the current blockbuster exhibition Da Vinci—The Genius closes on July 29\, and\, in anticipation of two planned exhibitions coming in 2019.  Coming in February 2019\, the NMMNHS will host an exhibition from the DEA Museum called “Drugs: Costs and Consequences” as well as another traveling exhibit on what we know about the human brain. \nTwo programs will be held at the museum and DynaTheater. The cost of admission for the luncheon is $50\, that includes lunch in the Community Gallery of the Museum from 12 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.\, remarks by the author\, a signed copy of Gelb’s book How to Think like Leonardo Da Vinci\,  and same-day\, non-transferable admission to Da Vinci—The Genius exhibition afterwards. \nA cocktail hour and lecture is scheduled for the same day (July 26) at a separate cost. This $55 ticket will include a 5:30PM cocktail/appetizer reception with remarks by the author\, a lecture\, a signed copy of Michael Gelb’s book How to Think like Leonardo Da Vinci\, and non-transferable passes to visit the “DaVinci\, The Genius” exhibition once over its last three days.

DESCRIPTION:Cara Romero is a born visual storyteller. Her photography\, a melange of fine art and documentary style\, is an examination of her culture with a distinctly modern indigenous world view. Her work is often whimsical and can be a complex interplay on social commentary. Cara was raised on the Chemehuevi Valley Indian Reservation and is married to Cochiti potter Diego Romero. Her work has been collected by The Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian-NYC\, MIAC\, and The American Museum of Britain.
