SUMMARY:“Fort Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial: Past\, Present\, and Future”
DESCRIPTION:With the passing of the 150th commemoration of the signing of the Navajo Treaty of 1868\, many questions have arisen regarding the future direction of Fort Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial.  But before discussing the future\, it is necessary to visit the past.  This talk will briefly discuss the history of Fort Sumner\, the Navajo Treaty of 1868 that established the sovereign Navajo Nation and ended the Bosque Redondo Reservation\, the evolution of the historical narrative of Fort Sumner Historic Site\, and the future exhibits of Bosque Redondo Memorial.  \nAaron Roth is Site Manager of Fort Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial\, who partners with New Mexico state personnel\, research firms\, local/regional communities\, and members of the Navajo Nation and Mescalero Apache Tribe to better explain watershed events in tribal history and allow safe space for healing and reconciliation.  For the last five years\, Aaron performed academic/archival research of tribal histories and oral histories.  As well\, Aaron spent two years collaborating with tribal members and understands what is required to develop lasting partnerships and exhibits that truly reflect moments of change and hardship in history.   \nAaron holds an MA in Southwest Studies Anthropology from New Mexico Highlands University and a BS in historic archaeology from Heidelberg University.  \nFree Auditorium event \nSeating is limited-bottled water only please \n

SUMMARY:First Friday Fractals- September
DESCRIPTION:A fractal is a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop. Driven by recursion\, fractals are images of dynamic systems – the pictures of Chaos. Geometrically\, they exist in between our familiar dimensions. Fractal patterns are extremely familiar\, since nature is full of fractals. For instance: trees\, rivers\, coastlines\, mountains\, clouds\, seashells\, hurricanes\, etc. Abstract fractals – such as the Mandelbrot Set – can be generated by a computer calculating a simple equation over and over. \nFirst Friday Fractals is the spectacular\, award-winning fulldome planetarium show that takes viewers on a tour of the fractals in nature and zooms through infinitely complex mathematical fractals. Featuring original music\, the show is both educational and highly entertaining\, and suitable for audiences 3 and up. \nFirst Friday Fractals shows are more informational than theFractals Rock shows. They include videos that explain a bit about the math behind the most popular fractal (the Mandelbrot set) and provide an overview of the Fractal Foundation’s education and outreach program. These shows include an equal mix of 2D and 3D zooms. \nShows are at 6 & 7pm on the first friday of each month \nFractals Rock! shows are “less talk\, more rock!” Typically\, they include more 3D fractal zooms\, which can make some people motion sick\, and do not include much explanation about what fractals are or the Fractal Foundation’s education and outreach. \nShows are at 8 & 9pm on the first friday of each month.

SUMMARY:Admission by Donation NMMNHS 4 days- Da Vinci moves out and $10 Museum/Planetarium Combo Ticket Debuts Labor Day
DESCRIPTION:For Immediate Release:  August 20\, 2018 (Albuquerque\, New Mexico) – Following enormous popularity and public support for the Da Vinci—The Genius exhibition\, held-over at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) through Wednesday\, August 29\, the Museum will offer four pay-what-you-can days to exhibits and planetarium shows Thursday through Sunday\, August 30\, 31\, September 1 and 2- the normal free Sunday for New Mexico residents. The DynaTheater will also be offering special discounted admission. \n“We have all been immensely gratified to be able to bring the genius of da Vinci to so many New Mexicans during this exhibition – it’s the most people we’ve had in the museum since it opened 30 years ago\,” said Margie Marino\, Director of the NMMNHS. “Da Vinci closes at 5 p.m. on Wednesday\, August 29\, and immediately we begin packing it up and shipping it on to the next stop. The museum will be rather noisy and chaotic those days while we dissemble the 10\,000 square-foot-plus exhibition\, there will be empty spaces\, and a lot of noise. We thought this would be an opportunity to let people come and enjoy the facility and donate what they can for these days.” \nFrom Thursday August 30 through Sunday September 2\, contribute a donation to see all of the museum’s permanent exhibitions and one planetarium show. The DynaTheater will offer a special rate of $5 per person for all shows. \nBeginning Labor Day\, Monday\, September 3\, the Museum will return to regular museum admission pricing\, with a new cost-saving ticketing option: a combination ticket for admission to both the Museum and the Planetarium. Currently the pricing structure for adults is $8 admission for the Museum and $7 for the Planetarium. Patrons will now be able to experience both for a combination $10 ticket for adults\, $9 for seniors\, and $7 for children. That will allow visitors to see any one of the five planetarium shows offered each day.

SUMMARY:CreativeMornings The Regenerative Community
DESCRIPTION:The Regenerative Community \nWhat is the role of communities in healing our planet? Joel Glanzberg of Regenesis will discuss his work in helping communities to embrace their potential as catalysts for regeneration. It is taken for granted that human activities and settlements will act as a drain on the carrying capacity of the Earth. As a result\, conversations about community-level sustainability are largely focused on how to help communities stay resilient in the face of instability. But what if human communities could do more than just protect themselves? What if they could regenerate the health and productivity of the ecological systems that they inhabit? Joel’s work as an educator in the field of regenerative development explores this potential\, engaging students all over the world in examining their communities through this lens. \nJoel Glanzberg will bring an ecological systems lens to the topic of community\, and as a faculty member for the Regenisis education program\, will also speak about the communities the Santa Fe-based group is working in.Glanzberg is a principal at Regenesis Group\, contributing over 25 years’ experience as an applied naturalist to land and community development projects throughout North America. Through assessing\, understanding\, and communicating the inherent patterns present in natural systems\, Joel helps clients and communities identify principles for appropriate and healthy development. \n  \nAs a resource to regenerative development\, Joel has worked for a diverse client base including communities\, colleges and universities\, government agencies\, and private developers. He is also a lead instructor in Regenesis’ education arm\, delivering The Regenerative Practitioner and Story of Place courses to students all over the world. An active author and educator in the fields of permaculture and ecological design\, Joel is skilled in cross-cultural communication and teaching. He has taught throughout the United States as well as in Africa\, South America and New Zealand\, and worked with a variety of Native American tribes and communities. \n

SUMMARY:Joe Pfeiffer: My Long Journey
DESCRIPTION:Artist Jacob Pfeiffer’s long journey covers 80-plus years and two continents. During the course of his amazing life\, he developed his artistic talent\, painting scenes that show the pioneer days through contemporary times.  \nPfeiffer\, who moved to Las Cruces in 2013\, specializes in oil painting on canvas and linen. His works in the show feature scenes of Native Americans and early settlers\, animals\, and even scenes of local sites like the Museum and the Las Cruces Farmers’ & Crafts Market. There are 26 included in the show. \nGrowing up in Romania\, Pfeiffer began drawing pictures of animals as a young child. Pfeiffer came to the United States when he was 19\, worked at various jobs and took art classes at night. Soon\, a prominent Cincinnati gallery offered him a solo show that was a great success. \nPfeiffer’s work has evolved over the years\, depending on the subject matter. He has received dozens of awards and his work has been displayed in galleries all over the country.

SUMMARY:Pueblo Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:  \nWHAT: Pueblo Independence Day. \nWHERE: Jemez Historic Site\, 18160 Hwy 4\, Jemez Springs\, NM 87025. \nWHEN: Sunday\, August 12\, 7AM – 3PM. \nDESCRIPTION: Come join us for our 15th annual commemoration of Pueblo Independence Day. On August 10\, 1680—the Pueblo People of New Mexico—aided by Apache and Navajo allies—launched a successful rebellion against Spanish colonization. Commemorative activities will begin with a pilgrimage run from Walatowa plaza in Jemez Pueblo to Giusewa Pueblo kiva at Jemez Historic Site (approximately a half marathon or 13 miles). Participating in this run\, or supporting a runner\, is a way to pay tribute to the Ancestors and show appreciation for the sacrifices they made. Their brave resistance helped preserve the Pueblo way of life: our culture\, our languages and our right to one day reclaim our aboriginal lands. The run begins at 7:00AM\, and the general public is welcome to participate. Volunteers will provide water stations at one mile intervals\, and a shuttle service for slow runners will be available. At 10:00AM\, guest speakers will welcome all the runners and their sponsors to the site. The following festivities\, between 10:30AM and 3:00PM\, will feature: Jemez traditional dances and Native American flute music. There will also be authentic Native arts & crafts and Native food. There is no admission fee for any of the activities related to this event. Call 575-829-3530 for more information. \n
