SUMMARY:PlutoPalooza ABQ NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt: The Epic Voyage of Exploration Continues
DESCRIPTION:On July 14\, 2015\, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft flew by Pluto and its moons at 31\,000 miles per hour. That day some 1.7 billion mentions of New Horizons sped across the Internet and social media\, evidence of worldwide interest in this first mission to the last planet of the classical solar system. Now\, the epic voyage of exploration continues with a planned January 1\, 2019 flyby of a mysterious and still more distant Kuiper Belt Object known as “MU69.” \n  \nOn September 21 and 22\, 2018 students\, teachers and the general public in Albuquerque and its region have the opportunity to hear directly from key members of the New Horizons team in fast-paced multimedia presentations featuring the stunning images and science gathered during the Pluto flyby. HD video illuminates key mission milestones\, including a preview of New Horizons’ next encounter – a flight past MU69\, which promises to be the most distant and most unchanged solar system object ever explored! NASA hopes that the flyby will provide important new discoveries about the origin and evolution of the entire solar system. \n  \n“Five NASA scientists and engineers from the mission will join us for a high-energy public presentation with a show and tell video in the museum’s Dynatheater\,” said Margie Marino\, the museum executive director. “The activities include a PBS Science café and a teacher workshop Saturday morning.”   \nFollowing the PLUTOPALOOZA presentations audiences will have the opportunity for moderated Q&A with the guest researchers\, and a chance to take and share “selfie” photos of themselves in front of giant backdrops of Pluto and MU69. \n  \nIn association with NMMNHS\, the New Horizons researchers and Educator Fellow Shirley Greene will lead a workshop for educators connecting the amazing results from the Pluto system to classroom ready activities complementing the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) and NM science standards. \n  \nThe mission scientists will also participate in a Science Café at NMMNHS coordinated by PBS.

SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Look! Curators Examine Your Treasures
DESCRIPTION:Curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology gather in lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. They attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes\, the discussion among the curators may become as much – or more informative – than the identification of the artifact. \nCurators cannot appraise any items but can refer you to resources that will. \nFor more information\, visit this page: http://indianartsandculture.org/lets-take-a-look

SUMMARY:HANDWRITING LIVES! One man’s journey to an advanced Certificate of Penmanship
DESCRIPTION:During the golden age of penmanship (1860 – 1930)\, before the typewriter\, becoming a Master Penman was the path to a successful career and high regard of friends and colleagues. Businesses required competent penmen for purposes of managing records\, writing policies and executing certificates and many continued their craft by teaching penmanship throughout the country. Today there are only eleven individuals who bear the title ‘Master Penman’\, and one of them is Bill Kemp who lives in nearby Albuquerque\, NM. \nIn a lecture open to the general public\, Bill Kemp\, Master Penman\, will describe the progression of perfecting his letterforms to a level of excellence that would pass rigorous scrutiny by the International Association of Master Penmen\, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting\, or IAMPETH. The long\, arduous process culminated in Bill creating his own ‘Certificate of Merit’\, completed in his most skillfully penned letterforms for the final stage of the process. \n \nBill Kemp\, from Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, has been studying the calligraphic arts for more then 30 years. His mentor for Copperplate is Mr. Bill Lilly. Learning sessions with Mr. Lilly occur once or twice a year continually for several years. Bill is a member of his local calligraphy guild\,Escribiente\, in Albuquerque\, and is on the IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penmen\, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting) Executive Board and also belongs to several other guilds thought the country. Bill has taught at numerous calligraphic conferences including Castle in the Air in Berkeley\, CA\, Houston\, Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu\, NM and in Albuquerque\, NM .

DESCRIPTION:With the passing of the 150th commemoration of the signing of the Navajo Treaty of 1868\, many questions have arisen regarding the future direction of Fort Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial.  But before discussing the future\, it is necessary to visit the past.  This talk will briefly discuss the history of Fort Sumner\, the Navajo Treaty of 1868 that established the sovereign Navajo Nation and ended the Bosque Redondo Reservation\, the evolution of the historical narrative of Fort Sumner Historic Site\, and the future exhibits of Bosque Redondo Memorial.  \nAaron Roth is Site Manager of Fort Sumner Historic Site/Bosque Redondo Memorial\, who partners with New Mexico state personnel\, research firms\, local/regional communities\, and members of the Navajo Nation and Mescalero Apache Tribe to better explain watershed events in tribal history and allow safe space for healing and reconciliation.  For the last five years\, Aaron performed academic/archival research of tribal histories and oral histories.  As well\, Aaron spent two years collaborating with tribal members and understands what is required to develop lasting partnerships and exhibits that truly reflect moments of change and hardship in history.   \nAaron holds an MA in Southwest Studies Anthropology from New Mexico Highlands University and a BS in historic archaeology from Heidelberg University.  \nFree Auditorium event \nSeating is limited-bottled water only please \n

SUMMARY:First Friday Fractals- September
DESCRIPTION:A fractal is a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop. Driven by recursion\, fractals are images of dynamic systems – the pictures of Chaos. Geometrically\, they exist in between our familiar dimensions. Fractal patterns are extremely familiar\, since nature is full of fractals. For instance: trees\, rivers\, coastlines\, mountains\, clouds\, seashells\, hurricanes\, etc. Abstract fractals – such as the Mandelbrot Set – can be generated by a computer calculating a simple equation over and over. \nFirst Friday Fractals is the spectacular\, award-winning fulldome planetarium show that takes viewers on a tour of the fractals in nature and zooms through infinitely complex mathematical fractals. Featuring original music\, the show is both educational and highly entertaining\, and suitable for audiences 3 and up. \nFirst Friday Fractals shows are more informational than theFractals Rock shows. They include videos that explain a bit about the math behind the most popular fractal (the Mandelbrot set) and provide an overview of the Fractal Foundation’s education and outreach program. These shows include an equal mix of 2D and 3D zooms. \nShows are at 6 & 7pm on the first friday of each month \nFractals Rock! shows are “less talk\, more rock!” Typically\, they include more 3D fractal zooms\, which can make some people motion sick\, and do not include much explanation about what fractals are or the Fractal Foundation’s education and outreach. \nShows are at 8 & 9pm on the first friday of each month.

SUMMARY:Admission by Donation NMMNHS 4 days- Da Vinci moves out and $10 Museum/Planetarium Combo Ticket Debuts Labor Day
DESCRIPTION:For Immediate Release:  August 20\, 2018 (Albuquerque\, New Mexico) – Following enormous popularity and public support for the Da Vinci—The Genius exhibition\, held-over at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) through Wednesday\, August 29\, the Museum will offer four pay-what-you-can days to exhibits and planetarium shows Thursday through Sunday\, August 30\, 31\, September 1 and 2- the normal free Sunday for New Mexico residents. The DynaTheater will also be offering special discounted admission. \n“We have all been immensely gratified to be able to bring the genius of da Vinci to so many New Mexicans during this exhibition – it’s the most people we’ve had in the museum since it opened 30 years ago\,” said Margie Marino\, Director of the NMMNHS. “Da Vinci closes at 5 p.m. on Wednesday\, August 29\, and immediately we begin packing it up and shipping it on to the next stop. The museum will be rather noisy and chaotic those days while we dissemble the 10\,000 square-foot-plus exhibition\, there will be empty spaces\, and a lot of noise. We thought this would be an opportunity to let people come and enjoy the facility and donate what they can for these days.” \nFrom Thursday August 30 through Sunday September 2\, contribute a donation to see all of the museum’s permanent exhibitions and one planetarium show. The DynaTheater will offer a special rate of $5 per person for all shows. \nBeginning Labor Day\, Monday\, September 3\, the Museum will return to regular museum admission pricing\, with a new cost-saving ticketing option: a combination ticket for admission to both the Museum and the Planetarium. Currently the pricing structure for adults is $8 admission for the Museum and $7 for the Planetarium. Patrons will now be able to experience both for a combination $10 ticket for adults\, $9 for seniors\, and $7 for children. That will allow visitors to see any one of the five planetarium shows offered each day.

SUMMARY:CreativeMornings The Regenerative Community
DESCRIPTION:The Regenerative Community \nWhat is the role of communities in healing our planet? Joel Glanzberg of Regenesis will discuss his work in helping communities to embrace their potential as catalysts for regeneration. It is taken for granted that human activities and settlements will act as a drain on the carrying capacity of the Earth. As a result\, conversations about community-level sustainability are largely focused on how to help communities stay resilient in the face of instability. But what if human communities could do more than just protect themselves? What if they could regenerate the health and productivity of the ecological systems that they inhabit? Joel’s work as an educator in the field of regenerative development explores this potential\, engaging students all over the world in examining their communities through this lens. \nJoel Glanzberg will bring an ecological systems lens to the topic of community\, and as a faculty member for the Regenisis education program\, will also speak about the communities the Santa Fe-based group is working in.Glanzberg is a principal at Regenesis Group\, contributing over 25 years’ experience as an applied naturalist to land and community development projects throughout North America. Through assessing\, understanding\, and communicating the inherent patterns present in natural systems\, Joel helps clients and communities identify principles for appropriate and healthy development. \n  \nAs a resource to regenerative development\, Joel has worked for a diverse client base including communities\, colleges and universities\, government agencies\, and private developers. He is also a lead instructor in Regenesis’ education arm\, delivering The Regenerative Practitioner and Story of Place courses to students all over the world. An active author and educator in the fields of permaculture and ecological design\, Joel is skilled in cross-cultural communication and teaching. He has taught throughout the United States as well as in Africa\, South America and New Zealand\, and worked with a variety of Native American tribes and communities. \n
