SUMMARY:Large Scale Alebrijes Coming to Milner Plaza | Meet and Greet the Artists
DESCRIPTION:Seven large-scale alebrijes or whimsical creature sculptures inspired by Mexican folklore will be installed on Milner Plaza on Museum Hill from June 14-16 as a summer extension of the exhibition\, La Cartonería Mexicana / The Mexican Art of Paper and Paste\, at the Museum of International Folk Art. The sculptures will be on display until early October. This project is in partnership with the Mexican Cultural Center DuPage. \nThe installation on Milner Plaza will take place with help from two of the six Mexico City artists\, Alejandro Camacho Barrera and Miriam Camancho\, and the Artistic Director of this project\, Fernando Ramirez from the Mexican Cultural Center Du Page. \nPlease join us on Thursday\, June 15 from 3 to 5 pm in front of the Museum of International Folk Art to see the installation in progress and meet the artists from Mexico City. The other artists represented in this display from Mexico City are Perla Miriam Salgado Zamorano\, Alberto Moreno Fernández\, and Edgar Israel Camargo Reyes. \nWe would also like to give a special tribute to Edwina and Charles Milner\, who together were the lead donors for Milner Plaza\, a 32-acre renovation project that created a beautiful public space for four world-class museums on Museum Hill where numerous programs like this have taken place. \nWe are especially grateful to Los Amigos del Arte Popular\, Friends of Folk Art\, International Folk Art Foundation and donors to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation Exhibition Development Fund for making this exhibition and outdoor installation possible.

SUMMARY:Library Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Museum Library is proud to partner with the Sant Fe Book Arts group to bring you The Life Cycle of the Book\, an open house exhibition of exploded books.  These new works of art were created from discarded books that exemplify the variety of printing techniques employed over time by publishers.  Reveling in a book’s tangible aspects\, the show brings together 10 works created from books that engage different periods in art and celebrate the art of printing itself.  \nWe hope you’ll join us for this special opportunity to get to know your Museum Library and be inspired by the art in books and the book as art.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series: Encore Presentation The Civil War in the Far West
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans believe that the Civil War took place only in the East—Gettysburg\, Atlanta\, Appomattox—and that the fight involved only the North and the South. Beginning in the summer of 1861\, however\, the U.S. and Confederate armies clashed with each other and with Indigenous peoples in New Mexico and Arizona\, fighting for control over the larger West. Drawing from her Pulitzer Prize-finalist book\, The Three-Cornered War\, Megan Kate Nelson will explain what was at stake for all three groups in the Civil War in the West; how the conflict evolved between 1861 and 1868; and the print\, material\, and visual sources she consulted to uncover the lived experiences of the war’s combatants and civilians in this region. \nMegan Kate Nelson is a historian and writer\, with a BA from Harvard and a PhD in American Studies from the University of Iowa. Her most recent book\, The Three-Cornered War: The Union\, the Confederacy\, and Native Peoples in the Fight for the West (Scribner 2020) was a finalist for the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in History. She writes about the Civil War\, the U.S. West\, and American landscapes of memory for The New York Times\, Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, Smithsonian Magazine\, Preservation Magazine\, and Civil War Times. Scribner will publish her next book\, Saving Yellowstone: Exploration and Preservation in Reconstruction America\, in March 2022. \nYouTube Link:  https://bit.ly/3oiau3b \nDonations Welcome \n

SUMMARY:First Friday: Gallery Talk with the Curator\, Katherine Ware
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the galleries for an informal discussion by the Museum’s Curator of Photography\, Katherine Ware\, about her newest exhibition\, Manuel Carrillo: Mexican Modernist. Museum admission will be free all evening (5-7PM)\, and the talk will begin at 5:30 in the upstairs gallery. \n  \nMexican photographer Manuel Carrillo (1906-1989) turned to the camera fairly late in life\, joining the Club Fotográfico de México at the age of 49. He quickly found his voice by making images of everyday life throughout Mexico\, celebrating local culture and the human spirit. His work is an extension of Mexicanidad\, a movement begun in the 1920s to forge a Mexican national identity free of foreign influence. Stylistically\, however\, Carrillo was inspired by Mexican artists trained abroad and international artists who converged on Mexico during that fertile period. His interest in indigenous cultures and his use of bright sunlight to create compositions with dramatic shadows and bold geometric forms has roots in the photographic work of Edward Weston and Paul Strand\, American modernist photographers active in Mexico in the 1920s and 1930s. Rather than idealizing\, estheticizing\, or moralizing\, Carrillo portrays Mexico from the perspective of an affectionate observer\, transforming ordinary moments into expressions of quiet eloquence.
