SUMMARY:Maximiliano Luna and the Rough Riders
DESCRIPTION:Theodore Roosevelt called his men “children of the dragon’s blood\,” those Rough Riders who bravely followed him up Cuba’s Kettle and San Juan hills in the face of blistering Spanish rifle and artillery fire.  Surely no Rough Rider deserved that title more than Captain Maximiliano Luna of New Mexico.  Yet his fascinating life has remained in the shadows of history – until now. Richard Melzer’s biography of Captain Maximiliano Luna is far more than a simple tale of military glory\, for the author has placed this young soldier within the context of the unique place that is New Mexico. \n \nDr. Melzer is originally from Teddy Roosevelt’s hometown of Oyster Bay\, New York\, and has lived in New Mexico since 1973. Melzer earned his Ph.D. in History at UNM in 1979. He has taught history at the University of New Mexico’s Valencia Campus since that same year. He is now a Regents professor of history. He is a past president of both the Historical Society of New Mexico and the Valencia County Historical Society.\n \n \n \nTickets are $10\, free for members of El Rancho de Las Golondrinas or Museum of New Mexico Foundation. Doors open at 5:15 PM.

SUMMARY:Antique Treasures Show
DESCRIPTION:The 14th-Annual Antique Treasures Show at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum has expanded to two days. The new show will have plenty of old treasures this year as more than a dozen antique and collectible dealers from as far away as Santa Fe will be here to show some of their merchandise. Most of the vendors are donating items to a silent auction that will continue over both days. \n  \nIVisitors can play “Stump the Curator” by bringing items in to see if our experts can identify them or their use. Some of the vendors will offer free\, independent\, informal appraisals of objects brought in by visitors. \n  \nPreservation also is an important part of the show\, and professionals from the Museum’s staff and New Mexico State University will offer advice on how best to preserve your treasures. \n  \nThe expanded show also will include several old-fashioned demonstrations\, and all of the regular Museum offerings and exhibits are included in the regular admission — $5 for adults\, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for children 4 to 17.

SUMMARY:Museum Telescopes Open Sunday Night\, Jan. 20 for Supermoon Total Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:(Albuquerque\, New Mexico ) — Another Supermoon Total Eclipse is coming to the skies over New Mexico Jan. 20\, 2019. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science’s will open its doors from 8:30 – 11:30 p.m. for visitors to fully appreciate the astronomical coincidence happening in the sky that evening after sunset (weather permitting). \nA lunar eclipse happens when the moon moves into the Earth’s shadow and reflects its dark\, red interior color. They don’t happen often because normally the moon moves slightly over or under the shadow when it’s on the far side of the Earth from the sun.  The next total lunar eclipse won’t happen until May 26\, 2021\, so this will be the last chance to experience this phenomenon for over two years. On Jan. 20\, the moon will also be relatively close to the Earth while it’s full\, which has recently become known as a Supermoon. The entire eclipse will be visible from New Mexico and the moon will be high in the sky\, so they’ll be no need to seek a location with a view of the horizon. \nFor a closer look at the moon as it slides into the red shadow\, telescopes provided by the Museum and Albuquerque Astronomical Society will be available around the Museum grounds and also on the Observatory Deck. A live video stream will show the eclipse from other locations around the world. Informational videos\, posters\, and handouts will explain the term Supermoon\, what causes eclipses\, and why eclipses make the moon turn red. \n“In addition to marveling at the moon’s transformation\, we may also look at other wonders in the sky through the available telescopes” said Museum Space Science Director Jim Greenhouse. \nHere are the times for the stages of the eclipse Jan. 20: Partial Eclipse Begins – 8:34 p.m. Total Eclipse Begins – 9:41 p.m. Maximum Eclipse – 10:12 p.m. Total Eclipse Ends – 10:43 p.m. Partial Eclipse Ends – 11:50 p.m. \nThe observing part of this event will be canceled if the sky is cloudy.  No reservations are required and admission is by donation. Feel free to come in your pajamas (assuming you don’t mind being seen in public that way)\, but check the weather and dress appropriately for being outside in the cold.

SUMMARY:“Pueblo Oral Traditions: Storytelling Through Music” Presented by Marlon Magdalena Sunday\, January 20\, 2019 @ 2 pm at the DeLavy House
DESCRIPTION:Many indigenous communities throughout the New World do not have written languages. This means that traditional cultural knowledge of those communities has to be passed orally from one generation to the next. Music often plays a pivotal role in how communities pass on knowledge\, specifically during participation in seasonal cultural activities. The focus of this presentation will be on storytelling through music as learned and taught by a Jemez Pueblo tribal member. \nMarlon Magdalena is the Instructional Coordinator of Jemez Historic Site in Jemez Springs\, New Mexico and a Jemez Pueblo tribal member. As an educator\, he gives presentations\, demonstrations\, and lectures about Jemez and Coronado Historic Sites\, as well as\, other interesting topics. \nThe Lecture will take place at the Sandoval County Historical Society Museum (DeLavy House) on Edmond Road and Hwy 550\, Bernalillo. Admission is $5; Friends of CHS are free. For more information visit: kuaua.com or phone Barb at 815-978-5327. \n  \nCoronado Historic Site is open daily\, except Tuesdays\, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $5. A combination ticket\, good for admission to both Jémez and Coronado Historic Sites is available for $7. First Sunday admission for New Mexico residents with ID is free. Wednesday admission is free to New Mexico Seniors (60+) with ID. Children 16 and under are always admitted free. SUMMARY:Pottery Demonstration Series with Dina Velarde (Jicarilla Apache)
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we continue our popular Pueblo pottery series\, this month featuring Jicarilla Apache artist Dina Velarde.  \nA graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts\, where she received a BA in Museum Studies\, Velarde parlayed her experiences into her position at MIAC (education assistant)\, which affords her the opportunity to work with schools and other youth groups visiting the museum. “My lifelong study of the arts has allowed me to come full circle\,” says Velarde. “Working at MIAC\, I am now able to assist in creating art projects intertwined with the teaching of Native history\, while being surrounded and learning from museum professionals.” \nVelarde’s specialty is micaceous pottery\, ranging from light golden honey hues to rich dark black\, all with the glistening mica specks that are enhanced with traditional firing. All her work is done by hand following the traditions of her ancestors. \nHer work has no doubt benefited from her AA in Studio Arts\, which included painting\, drawing\, and photography – her other specialty. “Growing up on the Jicarilla reservation\, I always had an appreciation for art\, much being encouraged by my grandmother\, who did bead work and basketry\,” says Velarde. “It wasn’t until much later that I would come to focus on micaceous pottery and photography.”

SUMMARY:Opening Receptions
DESCRIPTION:Carved & Cast: 20th Century New Mexican Sculpture \nCarved & Cast presents a survey of traditional sculptural media\, genres\, and styles that New Mexican artists have utilized over the last century and highlights the various ways sculpture engages with the cultural\, social\, and aesthetic issues unique to the Southwest. Though this exhibition serves as a broad\, yet modest\, survey of 20th century sculpture in the region\, it also spotlights significant sculptors who are well represented in the collection. The work of Patrocinio Barela\, Agnes C. Sims\, Eugenie Shonnard\, Fritz Scholder\, and George Winslow Blodgett is highlighted in the alcoves while the rest of the gallery explores significant themes in 20th century sculpture such as portrait busts\, animals\, abstraction and modern takes on traditional themes. \nWait Until Dark \nWait Until Dark draws from the museum’s collection of painting\, prints\, and photographs to examine how nocturnes work within the broader category of painting. Generally understood as simply a night scene\, the term nocturne refers to the quality of light in a painting\, and can be twilight\, waxing or waning light\, or the darkness of night. Nocturne speaks as much to the mood of a painting as it does the quality of light. Artists use this to create narratives and set the scene for cultural and community events. These works illustrate how darkness conveys a mood that can be dreamy\, ethereal\, menacing\, meditative\, brooding\, or poetic. \nShots in the Dark \nPhotography is most often associated with light (the word itself means “light writing” in Greek). Shifting our expectations about the medium of light is this selection of images by four contemporary Southwest photographers — Christopher Colville\, Scott B. Davis\, Michael Lundgren\, and Ken Rosenthal — all working in the landscape at night. Each has a different perception of that special time between dusk and dawn\, evoking fears\, fantasies\, and a sense of wonder.

SUMMARY:Blazing New Trails through New Mexico Historic Sites Friends of History Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Following a major reorganization in 2016\, the Historic Sites Division embarked on an ambitious effort to redefine the interpretive vision of preserving and sharing New Mexico’s rich history to visitors while elevating the stories of the individual sites to new levels.   This presentation will detail not only the new directions that Division Director Patrick Moore and his regional managers brought to the sites\, but also how perspectives on considering “contested space” shaped the conversations in telling New Mexico’s complicated past.    \nAfter graduating from New Mexico State University with BA and MA degrees in Political Science\, History\, and Public History\, Patrick Moore went on to earn a PhD from Arizona State University and began a career working on myriad projects that ranged from NASA to the United States Navy at Guantanamo Bay\, all while teaching future history practitioners their craft.   After spending 18 years directing the Public History program at the University of West Florida\, Moore returned home to New Mexico in 2016 to assume leadership of the Department of Cultural Affairs’ Historic Sites Division.
