SUMMARY:A Visit to the Bosque Farms Studio of Sculptor William Rogers a Friends of Indian Art Event
DESCRIPTION:William “Billy” Rogers (Diné) made his debut at Native Treasures in 2011.  Since then\, his large-scale\, stylized\, stainless steel sculptures have gained a huge following and he now shows at a wide range of art shows\, as well as at Manitou Gallery. Recently retired from the Albuquerque Fire Department\, Billy is now a full-time artist with a 2000+ square foot studio in Bosque Farms.  We will visit his studio and see his works at various points in their development to understand the inspiration for his designs\, how his pieces are fabricated\, and the finishing/patina process.

The free activity book is for learners of all ages and explores Pueblo Culture\, Spanish Culture\, conflict\, archaeology\, and water. Participants receive a limited-edition patch depicting Coronado’s arrival to Kuaua Pueblo. Join us for this special presentation about the importance of sleep to your brain health. Dr. Morton is a research assist. professor\, UNM Dept. of Neurosciences. He is a neuroscientist and electrophysiologist whose research studies how the cells in our brains communicate with one another. Dr. Cutchen is a sleep specialist and assist. professor\, UNM School of Medicine. She worked as a mental health counselor and is board certified in Family Practice and Sleep Medicine. Dr. Diaz is also an assist. professor\, UNM School of Medicine. She is interested in improving quality of life through the treatment of sleep disorders and is board certified in General Psychiatry\, Geriatric Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine. \nEach lecture is held in the DynaTheater and costs: $8 nonmembers\, $7 members\, $5 students. SUMMARY:Pueblo Pottery Demonstration with Elizabeth and Marcellus Medina (Zia Pueblo)
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth “Sepia” was born into the Jemez Pueblo\, and married into the Zia Pueblo. She was inspired to make pottery by her Mother-in-Law\, Sofia Medina. Elizabeth specializes in the traditional Zia pottery with symbols and birds. She digs her own clay\, cleans\, mixes coils\, shapes\, fires\, and paints her pottery the traditional way\, with natural colors. \nMarcellus’ designs come from his culture\, religious belief\, and spirituality. These three elements are the central core of harmony – the balance of inner peace. Each of his pieces tells a positive story and depicts the reality of our being in this world. Feelings and visions are shared through art pieces\, which reflect the colors of the rainbow. He embraces the beautiful scenery of New Mexico with a style and grace that transpires the feelings and visual effects that are a breathtaking blessing from the sky\, land\, and oceans.

DESCRIPTION:The average museum visitor spends just 15 to 30 seconds in front of a work of art\, according to museum researchers. One day each year – April 6 in 2019 – people all over the world visit local museums and galleries to take more time to look. Slow Art Day participants look slowly at five pre-selected works of art for ten minutes each and then come together for a conversation about their experiences.

DESCRIPTION:Some people prefer to express themselves through images\, but other artists have taken the time to write down or dictate their thoughts verbally. Visitors to this library open house will have a chance to see and read autobiographies\, interviews and even poetry and recipes written by people whose artwork is collected by the New Mexican Museum of Art. Some of the artists whose writings we have are Beatrice Wood\, TC Cannon\, John Sloan\, Alfred Morang and Faith Ringgold. \nThis event is an informal opportunity for you to browse books and artist files\, ask questions\, exchange recommendations with the Librarian and see what’s new.  About 7500 books are available for browsing\, reading and creative inspiration.  We offer free Wifi if you wish to bring a laptop\, smartphone or tablet.  Come any time between 1-4pm. \nThe lobby and courtyard of the museum are food and drink friendly\, the library is just friendly. Please finish your food and drinks before entering the library.

DESCRIPTION:Barbara is a talented potter and an extension of her famous great-grandmother\, Maria Martinez. She personalizes her pottery that she describes as “slipped-designed polychrome” with inlaid coral and turquoise on etched black and sienna wares\, often inlaid on spider designs. \nCavan Gonzalez is a leader in the polychrome revival at San Ildefonso Pueblo. He comes from a long line of distinguised Native American potters starting with his great-great-grandmother\, Maria Martinez. He works using traditional methods\, though his designs are inspired by both past and present day life.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the programming associated with the current exhibition from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Drugs: Costs & Consequences Opening Eyes to the Damage Drugs Cause\, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is hosting a lecture on the Oral Effects of Methamphetamine Use: The “Meth Mouth” Syndrome. \nThe presentation featuring graphic images of dental disease will be given by Stephen Wagner\, D.D.S.\, M.S. and Charles Tatlock\, D.D.S. MPH at the Museum Thursday\, March 7\, 2019\, from 9:30 – 11 a.m. \nDoctors Wagner and Tatlock are nationally recognized experts in the research and treatment of patients with ‘meth’ mouth; and were some of the first to alert their profession to the deteriorating physical changes that occur with long-term use. Dr. Wagner’s dental images have been published in medical and dental textbooks and used by The New York Times\, ABC News\, The Discovery Channel and Newsweek. \nDr. Wagner is currently in his 40th year of private practice in Albuquerque\, where he grew up. He earned his DDS degree from the University of Southern California and prosthodontic training from MD Anderson Hospital\, Houston\, Texas. Dr. Tatlock is a Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico Department of Dental Medicine\, School of Medicine. He earned his DDS degree from Baylor/Texas A&M and MPH (master’s in public health) from UNM. \n

SUMMARY:Talk on the Tribesourcing Project with Jennifer Jenkins\, PhD Sunday\, March 1\, 2020 2:00-3:30pm in the Vernick auditorium
DESCRIPTION:“This NEH-funded project seeks to “tribesource” 60 educational films about the Native peoples of the Southwestern U.S. works from the American Indian Film Gallery\, a collection awarded to the University of Arizona in 2011. Most of the films were made in the mid-20th century and reflect mainstream cultural attitudes of the day. Often the narration pronounces meaning that is inaccurate or disrespectful\, but the visual narratives are for the most part quite remarkable. At this historical distance\, many of these films have come to be understood by both cultural insiders and outside scholars as documentation of cultural practices and lifeways—and\, indeed\, languages—that are receding as practitioners and speakers pass on.  This project seeks to rebalance the historical record\, intentionally shifting emphasis from external perceptions of Native peoples to the voices\, knowledge\, and languages of the peoples represented in the films by participatory recording of new narrations for the films. \n  \nTribesourcing places historical materials with the peoples they represent in order to tell the untold or suppressed story. Each film in this project will be streamed in a Mukurtu-based website with alternate narrations from within the culture in English and in Native languages. This method allows for identification of people\, places\, practices\, vocabulary and stories that might otherwise be lost\, as well as providing a rich\, community-based metadata record for each film. Taking a small step toward cultural repatriation of content\, tribesourcing as a methodology is guided by the Protocols for American Indian Archival Materials (2006). \n  \nThis project seeks to contribute to ongoing efforts to decolonize the archive and restore voice and narrative sovereignty to the people who appear in these films—as agents of their own information rather than subjects of a governmental or corporate agenda.  Participation\, Equity\, and Inclusion are central to this project.”

Join Dr. Bearer as she describes new research on how the brain works and its response to life-threatening fear and stress. Dr. Bearer is a neuropathologist\, UNM School of Medicine and the Harvey Family professor in Pathology. She works on the neurobiology of mental health\, studying biomarkers of trauma and abuse in children and the cause of Alzheimer Disease. Her research also includes the perception and impact of music on the brain. She is a Fellow of AAAS and the College of American Pathologists. \nEach lecture is held in the DynaTheater and costs: $8 nonmembers\, $7 members\, $5 students.
