SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Look! MIAC Curators Examine Your Treasures
DESCRIPTION:MIAC Curators gather in the lobby of the Museum on the third Wednesday of each month awaiting whatever treasures may walk through the door. This is your opportunity to bring a family heirloom\, something special from your collection\, or a piece you know nothing about. Naturally\, they prefer items from the American Southwest (in keeping with the museum’s focus)\, but they will check out anything you bring in. \nFederal law prohibits curators from “appraising” any items\, but they will direct you to appropriate resources. For more information\, visit this page: http://indianartsandculture.org/lets-take-a-look.

I attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena\, CA\, where I obtained a BFA in education. I have been participating in Santa Fe Indian Market since the early 2000s and have had the honor of receiving 3 first place\, 2 second place\, and 2 honorary ribbons for my paintings. With this\, I feel my work honors the memory of my relations\, because the work is influenced by their strength and reslience. I am known for my ledger art\, and have been honored to be in several museum shows about the subject of Plains Indian ledger art and its heartfelt and heroic history. \nI am a landowner of tribal land on the Standing Rock Reservation and I’m committed to teaching and inspiring future generations of its sacred symbolism and how we must persevere to keep Unci Maka (Grandmother Earth) as it was in the past and protect her in the future.”

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Family Mornings at Folk Art Free Family Programming
DESCRIPTION:Upcoming: \n \n\n \nFamily Mornings takes a summer break for July. Enjoy the International Folk Art Market Family Day\n \nAugust 4th for “World Travel”\n\n \n\nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \nA division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. SUMMARY:Audubon Day Celebration at the Center for NM Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) will collaborate with Audubon New Mexico\, for a special event\, Audubon Day: A Celebration of Birds\, at the Center for New Mexico Archeology (CNMA) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event coincides with Birds: Spiritual Messengers of the Skies\, an exhibition currently on view at CNMA\, and celebrates the importance of birds across the Southwest. \nThe event schedule will be family friendly and include live demonstrations as well as hands-on activities. Everyone in attendance is invited to participate in making clay figures\, viewing bird-related objects under a microscope\, and creating balls out of bird seed. Other activities include “Birding 101\,” which teaches attendees the basics of birding skills. At 11:00 a.m.\, Jon Hayes\, Audubon New Mexico’s Executive Director\, will speak on conservation\, followed by Diana Sherman\, at 11:30 a.m. \nDemonstrations include a turkey feather blanket making demo Mary Weahkee (Santa Clara Pueblo/Comanche) and flute and whistle playing by Marlon Magdalena (Jemez Pueblo)\, whose instruments have been made of bird-bone. Magdalena will also speak at 1pm. \nMIAC is pleased to present a pottery making demo with renowned Pueblo potter Robert Tenorio of Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Life in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Of all the New Deal agencies of the Great Depression era\, the Civilian Conservation Corps was the most popular and\, many would argue\, the most successful. Richard Melzer’s lecture will focus on the importance of the CCC in New Mexico as a whole\, but especially on the lives of the 54\,000 young men who enrolled in the program and served in the state. \nLiving on their own\, getting along with others\, learning a strong work ethic\, and helping to conserve the environment were some of the most important lessons the men learned. Most considered their CCC experience the turning point of their lives. Surviving the Great Depression\, these men were well prepared to help the country win World War II and succeed in the post-war period. \nDr. Richard Melzer is the author\, co-author\, or editor of two dozen books\, as well as over a hundred articles and chapters about New Mexico history. \nHe is a past president of the Historical Society of New Mexico and the Valencia County Historical Society.  Among his many awards he has received for writing\, teaching\, and service is the University of New Mexico’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. \nFree Auditorium event. Bottled water only please. \nSeating is limited\, and on a first-come first-served basis\, with doors opening at approximately 11:30am.
