SUMMARY:Apollo 12 Anniversary Celebrate with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science
DESCRIPTION:November 20\, 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 12 astronaut’s second day on the lunar surface. To celebrate this historic event\, take part in a truly unique experience as you “walk on the Moon” (on a giant lunar floor map). The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is the only place in New Mexico and one of only a few places in the country to have this giant moon map on loan from NASA. We are the first to have this geological lunar map after its appearance on the National Mall in Washington DC to celebrate the Apollo 11 Anniversary. New Mexico has long been involved in studying the geology of the Moon\, using New Mexico’s volcanoes as analogs to lunar volcanism. So…come walk on the moon… Hands-on activities for all ages will include virtual reality apps based on the Apollo missions. \n\n \n\n \nEvent is included with Museum admission

SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Look! MIAC Curators Examine Your Treasures
DESCRIPTION:MIAC Curators gather in the lobby of the Museum on the third Wednesday of each month awaiting whatever treasures may walk through the door. This is your opportunity to bring a family heirloom\, something special from your collection\, or a piece you know nothing about. Naturally\, they prefer items from the American Southwest (in keeping with the museum’s focus)\, but they will check out anything you bring in. \nFederal law prohibits curators from “appraising” any items\, but they will direct you to appropriate resources. For more information\, visit this page: http://indianartsandculture.org/lets-take-a-look.

SUMMARY:Book Reading and Signing: Norma Elia Cantú\, Cabañuelas
DESCRIPTION:Salón Ortega \nNorma Elia Cantú will read from her new novel\, Cabañuelas (University of New Mexico Press\, 2019)\, the successor to her award-winning Canícula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera\, which chronicles her childhood experiences on the border. Nena leaves Laredo\, Texas\, and moves to Madrid\, Spain\, to research the historical roots of traditional fiestas in Laredo. Immersing herself in post-Franco Spain and its rich history\, its food\, music\, and fiestas\, Nena finds herself falling for Paco\, a Spaniard. Nena’s research and experiences teach her about who she is\, where she comes from\, and what is important to her. As her work comes to a close\, Nena must decide where she can best be true to her entire self: in Spain with Paco or in Laredo\, her home\, where her job and family await her return. After reading\, Cantú will talk about the craft of writing a novel—in celebration of National Novel Writing Month (November). \nThis event is free and open to the public \nPresented in conjunction with the University of New Mexico Press

SUMMARY:Film Showing of Living Traditions: Folk Art of New Mexico a documentary film by Michael Pettit
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about the 2009-2011 MOIFA exhibit ” A Century of Masters: The NEA Heritage Fellows of New Mexico” . \nEach year\, the National Endowment for the Arts honors folk artists\, storytellers\, performers\, and musicians throughout the United States for their contributions to traditional art forms. The National Heritage Fellows demonstrate artistic excellence and a commitment to their art forms through their processes\, techniques\, and transmission of the knowledge to others that strengthens and enriches their communities. http://www.internationalfolkart.org/exhibition/228/a-century-of-masters \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nHours: 10 am to 5 pm closed Mondays November through April\, closed Easter Sunday\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. \nFirst Sunday of Every Month is free to NM Residents. Green and Thomas Leech\, and a foreword by Martin Krause\, will be published by Rizzoli Electa on September 24\, 2019. The New Mexico Museum of Art will host a panel discussion moderated by Kate Nelson on the making of the book on November 16\, 2019 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at the Museum followed by a book signing. Panelists include Gala Chamberlain\, Nancy E. Green\, Martin Krause\, Thomas Leech\, and David Skolkin. \nIn A Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann\, A Catalogue Raisonné will be available for purchase at the New Mexico Museum of Art Shop on the day of the event. \nAbout the panelists: \nGala Chamberlain has worked at the Annex Galleries for forty years and is co-owner with her husband\, Daniel Lienau. The gallery has represented the Baumann estate since 1973 and Gala worked on the Baumann catalogue raisonné for the past thirty-five years. Ann Baumann asked her to be her successor trustee in 2006 and Gala has served as the Trustee of the Ann Baumann Trust since Ann’s death in 2011. The Ann Baumann Trust also provided funding for the 2014 publication Gustave Baumann and Friends: Artists Cards from Holidays Past\, funding for the exhibition\, Gustave Baumann in California\, and funding for the Gustave Baumann Symposium 2018. \nNancy E. Green is the Gale and Ira Drukier Curator of European and American Art\, Prints and Drawings\, at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum\, Cornell University\, where she has worked for over thirty-three years. Author of several award-winning publications including Arthur Wesley Dow and His Influence; Susan Rothenberg: Prints and Drawing; Byrdcliffe: An American Arts and Crafts Colony; A Room of Their Own: Bloomsbury Art in American Collections; and\, most recently Japan America: Points of Contact\, 1876-1970\, she is currently working on an exhibition that examines the revolution in teaching art at the turn of the last century. \nThomas Leech is the Curator of the Press at the Palace of the Governors\, and has more than 40 years’ experience in printing\, papermaking\, and related book arts. He was a recipient of the Santa Fe Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts\, and under his direction the Palace Press received the Carl Hertzog Award for Excellence in Book Design and the Edgar Lee Hewett Award from the New Mexico Association of Museums. He is co-author of Gustave Baumann and Friends: Artist Cards from Holidays Past\, and his essay on Baumann’s printing practices is included in the Gustave Baumann catalogue raisonné. \nMartin Krause was for thirty-nine years the Curator of Prints\, Drawings and Photographs at the Indianapolis Museum of Art\, the earliest institutional collector and second largest repository of the works of Gustave Baumann. Krause is coauthor of Gustave Baumann: Nearer to Art and editor of The Autobiography of Gustave Baumann and Gustave Baumann: Views of Brown County. \nDavid Skolkin‘s career began in New York City working in the studio of one of the top book designers in the publishing industry. While in New York he designed and art directed book and exhibition projects for most of the major art book publishers as well as museums\, galleries and art institutions in New York and around the country. When he couldn’t resist the landscapes of New Mexico any longer he moved to Santa Fe continuing to serve clients around the country. His work encompasses all aspects of publishing and graphic design\, with a concentration in book design and production\, the latter also involving extensive on-press supervision with printers in Europe and Asia. In addition to his freelance work he is also the Art and Production Director for the Museum of New Mexico Press\, the book imprint for the State system of museums spanning native\, folk\, and fine arts. He is also co-founder of Radius Books\, a non-profit art book publisher based in Santa Fe. \nAbout the Book: \nIn A Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann\, A Catalogue Raisonné by Gala Chamberlain documents 190 editioned works\, including color woodcuts and early etchings and color linocuts\, and an extensive body of printed ephemera created during the years 1905 to 1970. The introductory essay\, “Deftness\, Soul\, and a Gypsy Instinct: the Creative Art of Gustave Baumann\,” was written by Nancy E. Green\, Curator of European and American Art\, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art\, Cornell University in Ithaca\, New York. With her history of research\, exhibitions\, and writing on American printmakers\, Nancy was the perfect scholar for this task. Thomas Leech\, director of the Press at the Palace of the Governors\, New Mexico History Museum\, Santa Fe\, is a curator\, paper maker\, and letterpress printer\, and he curated a permanent exhibition of Baumann’s studio\, which includes his vials of dried inks\, printing press\, printing papers\, tools\, etc. With his amazing knowledge of paper\, presses\, printing\, and wood\, Thomas was the perfect scholar craftsman to write the essay “The Problems of a Regular Guy\,” on Baumann’s techniques. Martin Krause\, Curator Emeritus of Prints and Drawings\, Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields\, has a long history with Baumann’s color woodcuts and has extensive knowledge of the artist in Brown County and New Mexico. Marty co-authored Gustave Baumann: Nearer to Art and further edited two books\, The Autobiography of Gustave Baumann and Gustave Baumann: Views of Brown County\, and he graciously wrote the foreword for this book. Gala Chamberlain also wrote the essays on Baumann’s studio practices\, including on the papers used over his career and another on the history of his chops and their variations. The book is enriched by numerous never-before-published photographs of or by Gustave Baumann. \nTime: Panel discussion: 1:00 to 2:30 pm. Book signing: 2:45 pm to 4:00 pm \nLocation: The New Mexico Museum of Art\, 107 West Palace\, Santa Fe\, NM \nTicket Information: $10 per person for panel discussion. SUMMARY:Musica Buena Gallery Concert - Lara Manzanares
DESCRIPTION:Lara Manzanares is a bilingual singer-songwriter of Northern New Mexican heritage. In addition to singing the traditional New Mexican canciones of her sheep-ranching childhood\, Lara also composes her own style of music in both English and Spanish. Through a combination of storytelling and songs both playful and sincere\, Lara draws on her rural New Mexican roots and her urban experiences across the U.S. and abroad as she sings about love\, loss\, a sense of place\, and her own connection to the land. \nAfter several years spent living across the U.S.\, in 2016 Lara returned to New Mexico with her guitar and several original songs in tow. In 2017 she recorded her first original album at Santa Fe’s The Kitchen Sink Studios with producer and sound engineer Jono Manson\, backed by a phenomenal cast of musicians including Mark Clark\, Justin Bransford\, Jono Manson\, Jordan Wax\, Char Rothschild\, Felix Peralta\, and Rafael Herrera. The album\, Land Baby\, contains original songs in both English and Spanish. It received several nominations at the 2018 New Mexico Music Awards and went on to win Album of the Year. \nJust like Lara’s upbringing and New Mexico itself\, her music is a complex yet deeply cohesive mixture of cultures and sounds: deeply rooted but never still\, heartfelt and humorous\, simultaneously ancient and innovative. She continues to explore her New Mexican musical heritage and write and record songs while living in the Albuquerque area. Her most recent single\, “Dear John\,” was nominated as a finalist in the Americana category at the 2019 New Mexico Music Awards. You can listen to her music learn more about Lara by visiting her website\, laramanzanares.com.  \nPhoto credit Philip Wiley \n \n\nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. SUMMARY:Pueblo Pottery and Embroidery Demonstration with Michael Bancroft (Ohkay Owingeh) and Shawn Tafoya (Santa Clara)
DESCRIPTION:Michael Bancroft is a micaceous pottery instructor who discovered his love of clay in 2004. He feels his inspiration comes from his children’s grandmother\, Mary Sedillo\, and his grandmother\, Emily Povijua\, both of whom made pottery. He has taken and  instructed many art classes at the Poeh Cultural Center.\n \n \n \nWhile also a skilled potter\, Shawn Tafoya will demonstrate embroidery\, another of his passions. Although a traditionalist in terms of materials and technique\, his embroidery is strikingly innovative. Ideas for his work come from different sources\, including nature\, his Pueblo and other tribal groups\, pop culture and his family’s art.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Glorieta Pass and the Plot to Assassinate Colonel John Slough
DESCRIPTION:Historians have largely portrayed Major John Chivington as the hero of Glorieta Pass\, the bold officer whose surprise attack destroyed the rebel supply train and forced the Confederate retreat to Santa Fe.  In contrast\, they have depicted Chivington’s superior\, Colonel John Slough\, as the engagement’s goat\, a “martinet” whose incompetence nearly led to the Union army’s defeat in northern New Mexico Territory. What historians have ignored in their recounting of the 1862 New Mexico campaign was Chivington’s persistent effort to win promotion by assassinating Slough’s character\, perhaps even planning his murder. \nRichard Miller\, the author of Thwarted Ambition: The Life of General John Slough\, will use the background of the 1862 New Mexico campaign to revisit Chivington’s role in the victory at Glorieta Pass and discuss his plot to ruin Slough through insubordination\, anonymous newspaper attacks\, and even threats against the colonel’s life. \nRichard Miller earned a B.A. in history from Carleton College and an M.A. in history from Princeton University.  Although he spent his career in health care management and consulting\, he returned to reading and writing history upon his retirement in 2014. He has served as a president of the Puget Sound Civil War Roundtable\, where he is a frequent presenter\, and has also spoken to the Fort Collins Civil War Roundtable and the Cincinnati Civil War Roundtable.  He lives in Seattle with his wife Karin. \nDonations welcome \nAuditorium event with limited seating-bottled water only please

SUMMARY:Noche De Animas. Tzintzuntzan\, A Documentary Film about Day of The Dead\, 2pm The Noche De Animas film screening begins at 2 pm Vernick Auditorum Noche De Animas. Tzintzuntzan\, Documentary Film
DESCRIPTION:Noche de Animas. Tzintzuntzan is the culmination of a collaborative project of Metamorfosis Documentation Project (represented by Armando Espinosa Prieto and Craig Johnson) and the Centro Cultural Comunitario “Tzintzuntzan” in Tzintzuntzan to document the celebration of Day of the Dead in this community and to explore the relationships between the living and their dead. \nDía de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a feast day celebrated in indigenous and mestizo communities throughout Latin America. Known as Todos Santos\, Fieles Difuntos (All Souls)\, the celebrations have deep roots in pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures and in pagan and Catholic rituals. Each country\, region and ethnicity has developed different ways of honoring their ancestors\, always based on the same principles of responsibility and reciprocity that honor the role of the dead in the life of their families and communities. \nThe documentary investigates\, as told through the voices of members of the community\, how this agricultural ritual to celebrate the dead – the preparations for the celebration\, the altars\, and the sharing with the dead – strengthens ties of family\, spiritual kinship and community. \nSpecifically highlighted in the film is the cultural legacy of the ancient P’urhepechas. In the celebration of Noche de Animas\, family and community are regenerated in a ritual of cultural unity that features the generous sharing of abundance\, evoking a feeling of belonging and well-being. \n Metamorfosis Documentation Project \nMetamorfosis Documentation Project (MDP) is a local nonprofit organization based on a belief in the richness and importance of cultural traditions\, focusing on cross cultural rituals and dances in the Americas. \nThrough projects with mestizo and indigenous communities\, MDP\, in collaboration with their community museums\, documents and supports rituals and dances in their own cultural settings and shares them with a wider audience\, fostering an understanding of distinct cultures. \nThese collaborative projects typically involve three phases: 1) the documenting of the tradition through filming and interviews\, resulting in a documentary film\, with rights to reproduction and sale of the film being gifted to the Community Museum; 2) a related project sponsored by MDP in direct support to the community; and 3) public presentation of the results of the project including documentary film screenings\, submissions to film festivals\, lectures\, photographic exhibitions\, web presentations\, and related art works that offer opportunities for wider audiences to experience an inside look at cultures and community rituals markedly different from their own. \nExecutive Director Armando Espinosa says the mission of MDP is “to help to protect\, preserve and promote traditional cultures in the Americas.” \nMDP began working with indigenous communities in the late 1990’s\, collaborating on a small scale project with a small Rarámuri (Tarahumara) community in Copper Canyon in Chihuahua\, Mexico to document their Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebration. \nBeginning in 2007\, MDP has completed collaborations on four large-scale documentary project \nThe Day of the Dead Tzintzuntzan Project\, MDP’s current project\, involved a collaboration with the Centro Cultural Comunitario “Tzintzuntzan” (Tzintzuntzan Community Cultural Center) to document the traditional celebration of Noche de Animas in the P’urhépecha community of Tzintzuntzan\, Michoacán. \nThe first phase of this Project again included MDP’s apprentice program\, with two apprentices chosen by the local Tzintzuntzan Preparatory School who participated in the filming and interviewing of community members. In an additional collaboration in this phase\, with support from New Mexico Film Resource\, the Santa Fe Community College Film Department sent two students to work with MDP as apprentices during the filming of the actual Day of the Dead celebrations. This phase culminated in the production of the documentary\, Noche de Animas. Tzintzuntzan. \nIn the community support portion of this Project\, MDP and the Centro Cultural Comunitario “Tzintzuntzan” collaborated to offer a workshop\, “Techniques of Filming and Editing Cultural Documentaries”\, to nine members of the community in an effort to stimulate and prepare members of the community to document their own cultural traditions. Workshop participants filmed and produced three short documentaries focused on different cultural traditions of the community\, which were then screened for the community. \nMDP is now in the third phase of this Project\, and is presenting Noche de Animas. Tzintzuntzan in museums and universities in Mexico and the United States.
