DESCRIPTION:During this time\, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology are in the lobby of MIAC to look at your unidentified treasures. These curators will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes\, the discussion among the curators may become as much or more informative than the identification of the artifact  \nThe event is always free and open to the public. \nUpcoming "Let's Take A Look' Events:  \nWednesday\, May 20th \nWednesday\, June 17th \nWednesday\, July 15th \nWednesday\, August 19th \nWednesday\, September 16th  \n  \nFederal and State regulations prohibit the curators from  appraising any artifact. \n

SUMMARY:Photographer Laura Gilpin Comes to Life EVENT CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Meet Laura Gilpin\, circa 1954. A confident\, ebullient woman in her early 60s\, the Colorado native and Santa Fe resident packed in her equipment on horseback to photograph the source of the Rio Grande\, did studio portraits for society matrons\, directed pilots to "fly low" over Shiprock to capture the light and shadows from every possible angle. Laura Gilpin experimented with every subject and photographic technique for over fifty-five years before receiving widespread national recognition for it. \nDeborah Blanche brings Miss Gilpin to life with a performance that includes a slide show with images from her first Lumiere color prints and those in her best-known book\, The Enduring Navajo. She answers questions and tells some of the behind-the-camera stories about the photographic retrospective that parallels Gilpin's life. \n  Blanche has worked in theatre\, storytelling\, film\, radio and TV since her teens. After completing a Master of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Oklahoma\, she studied in Great Britain where a passion for "original" theatre production was ignited. Since that time\, she has become best known for the one-woman plays\, Chautauqua characters and storytelling programs that she researches\, writes and performs locally\, nationally and internationally. She also offers workshops\, coaching sessions\, and lecture-demonstrations related to her performances and theatrical skills.   \nBlanche's other chautauqua characters include Jeannette Rankin\, the first woman elected to Congress; Elizabeth Bacon Custer (yes\, wife of that Custer) and New Mexico author Erna Fergusson.  \nThrough the Lens: Creating Santa Fe charts the development of the City Different through the work of many photographers over the decades.  \n  Since the 1850s\, many of the most-recognized names in photography have focused their lenses in and on Santa Fe. Through their creative efforts\, they have documented the city and its visual history\, helping to create the mystique of Santa Fe. Photography has long been significant in the construction of notions of space and place\, landscape and identity and\, especially in Santa Fe\, has helped define the geographical imagination. Both documentary and fine art photographers were drawn to the region’s land\, its peoples\, the regional architecture\, and the quality of light found nowhere else in the world.  \nThe project\, curated by photographer and educator Krista Elrick and Palace of the Governors Curator of Photography Mary Anne Redding\, showcases outstanding photographs that reveal the aesthetic excellence of the artists working in Santa Fe. While the images document the city\, they have also been used\, historically\, as part of the marketing of the Santa Fe image and as a draw to other artists.    \n

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Writing with Thread Free public opening
DESCRIPTION:Writing with Thread: Traditional Textiles of Southwest Chinese Minorities features over 500 objects from the most inclusive collection of Southwest Chinese ethnic minority costumes in the world. Writing with Thread showcases the finest and rarest costumes from 15 ethnic groups and nearly 100 subgroups\, exploring the meanings associated with the production and use of indigenous clothing. In societies without written languages\, traditions and customs are orally passed form generation to generation. The textile arts\, largely practiced by women\, provide tangible evidence of a group's history\, myths\, and legends. The signs and patterns woven or embroidered in their clothing and the ceremonial and ritual use of textiles are often replicated in the accompanying silver ornaments made by men.  This exhibition was curated by Angela Sheng\, Assistant Professor of Chinese Art History at McMaster University in Hamilton\, Ontario\, Canada from the collection of the Evergrand Museum\, Taoyuan\, Taiwan. The exhibition closes in Santa Fe on August 16\, 2009.

SUMMARY:Lecture\, Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe At the Museum of International Folk Art
DESCRIPTION:As an architect\, I am concerned with how man builds on the land. As someone who has witnessed the ravages of conventional land development in the Western United States – especially on rural ranchland – I am interested in finding a better way to satisfy the need for development while protecting the land. \n— Anthony Anella  \n  \nWritten by Anthony Anella and John Write\, with Through the Lens photographer Edward Ranney's photographs\, Saving the Ranch: Conservation Easement Design in the American West is a call to protect the rapidly vanishing rural landscapes of the American West.  \n  \n Born and raised in Albuquerque\, Anthony Anella spent his early summers working on farms and ranches in New Mexico. From that experience he gained an abiding respect for the land and the people who earn their living on the land.  \nHe is the principal of Anthony Anella Architect AIA (anella.com)\, an award-winning practice dedicated to environmentally sensitive design and planning.  He is co-chair of the Aldo Leopold Centennial Celebration 2009 (LeopoldCelebration.org)\, and secretary of the New Mexico Land Conservancy. He is co-author\, with John B. Wright\, of Saving the Ranch: Conservation Easement Design in the American West (Island Press\, 2004)\, and Preserving Critical Lands in New Mexico (the Governor’s Task Force for Community Growth and Sustainability\, 2008).   \nHe is also co-author\, with Mark C. Childs\, and Krista Elrick (photography)\, of Never Say Goodbye: The Albuquerque Rephotographic Survey Project (Albuquerque Museum\, 2000). He has a Bachelor of Arts in History from Dartmouth College and a Master of Architecture from the University  of Colorado.  He believes that good design is distinguished by the art of listening and by letting the land do most of the talking. \nAt the heart of that design philosophy are issues of growth\, development and sustainability — issues that are also addressed in Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe. \nThe exhibit\, on display at the Palace of the Governors through Oct. 25\, provides a historical and contextual perspective on how photography has played an important role in documenting and shaping Santa Fe's image. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Canvassing the Neighborhood New Mexico Artists’ Views of Neighborhood Life
DESCRIPTION:Many Santa Feans knew Teal McKibben as part of the Canyon Road community of artists and shopkeepers. But few of her customers knew her as an artist. McKibben specialized in the region’s indigenous arts that also filled her apartment behind the store. This private\, solitary artist wove figurative textiles and drew large pastels of her collections. However\, McKibben rarely revealed her spellbinding works to outsiders.  Tim Prythero constructs his own neighborhoods of diners\, trailers\, taco wagons\, service stations\, and auto parts stores. This hyper-real sculptor revels in the patina of well worn objects from a fleeting past\, and skillfully recreates the illusion of those surfaces.  Carlotta Boettcher salvages automobile hoods and transforms them into metal “canvases” for her paintings. These works present an eclectic mix of imagery that ranges from memories of Cuba to geometric abstraction.  And from another perspective\, Alex Harris offers an over-the-hood view of life in Northern New Mexico. Many of his color photographs present New Mexico as it is often seen – through the windshield of a car or truck.  Canvassing the Neighborhood confirms that unexpected works of art always turn up in the neighborhoods of New Mexico.

SUMMARY:Lecture\, Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe At the New Mexico Film Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join New Mexico photographer Michael Berman for the latest lecture in the exhibition\, Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe. Berman will speak at 6 p.m. Tuesday\, March 31\, at the New   Mexico Film Museum\, 418 Montezuma Ave. \nBerman\, a 2008 Guggenheim Photography Fellow\, lives and works in the Black Range along the Mimbres River in southwest New Mexico. His photographs are included in Through the Lens\, and photographs from his ongoing endeavor\, Grasslands: The Chihuahuan Desert Project\, supported by Guggenheim\, will be published this year in Trinity\, the third book of the border trilogy\, The History of the Future\, with author Charles Bowden. \n  \nBerman says of the grasslands that he photographs:  \n  \nI have wandered this landscape – in between\, where thing fall apart – for a long time. On the west side lies the Sonoran desert with its giant saguaros\, and on the east side lies the Chihuahuan Desert. Lately\, I’m in love with the Chihuahuan  Desert\, a minimalist dream of small ranges and grasslands that no one seems to pay much attention to. This desert is like a Rothko painting or one of Serra’s smooth black arcs – once you have begun to look closely it takes a lifetime to see what is there. I can argue that this is the most complex collision of ecosystems on the planet. I can tell you that where there used to be ten thousand people there are now a million. I can tell you about the waters beneath closed basins that are being mined for cities\, and the plans to drain them dry in exchange for biofuels. I can tell you what madness happens on the border of two giant nations. I can tell you a lot of things … None of this matters.  What is important is the land. \n  \nBerman was born in New York City in 1956. In 1974\, he went west to Colorado  College where he studied biology. His photographs are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Amon Carter Museum and the Museum of  New Mexico. He has received Painting Fellowships from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Wurlitzer Foundation; his installations\, photographs and paintings have been reviewed in Art in America\, and exhibited throughout the country.  \nHis lecture is sponsored in conjunction with the Photography Department/Marion Center for Photographic Arts at the College of Santa Fe. Through the Lens is displayed at the Palace of the Governors through Oct. 25\, 2009. The Palace of the Governors has partnered with the College on the exhibit as part of their contribution to Santa Fe’s 400th anniversary celebration. \nSince the 1850s many of the most recognized names in photography have focused their lenses in and on Santa Fe. Through their creative efforts they have documented a particular place and its visual history. They helped create that "place" and the mystique of Santa Fe. SUMMARY:Monuments of Piedras Negras\, an Ancient Maya City Lecture and booksigning
DESCRIPTION:Patronized by royalty between the sixth and eighth centuries\, the monuments of Guatemala's ancient Maya city of Piedras Negras were carved by sculptors with remarkable skills and virtuosity. Together patrons and sculptors created monumental imagery in a manner unique within the larger history of ancient Maya art by engaging public viewers through illustrations of ceremonies focusing on family and the feminine in royal agendas.   Flora Clancy's introduction contextualizes her work with other studies and lays out her methodological framework. She then discusses the known monuments of the city sequentially by reigns. Individual rulers are characterized by a biography drawn from the hieroglyphic texts and the icons or imagery of their monuments are analyzed and discussed.   Although the monuments of Piedras Negras are acknowledged as social\, political\, and cultural productions\, Clancy also treats them as works of art that at their best operate on transcendent levels dissolving and overruling the contingencies of history and cultural differences. \n  Flora Simmons Clancy is professor emerita of art history at the University of New Mexico. She is a highly respected scholar in Maya art and iconography whose research has focused on Guatemala\, Honduras\, and Mexico. Besides The Monuments of Piedras Negras\, an Ancient Maya City\, her publications by UNM Press  include Sculpture in the Ancient Maya Plaza\, The Early Classic Period (1999). In 1994\, Smithsonian Books published her book\, Pyramids\, a comparison of the world's pyramids for a series of books\, Exploring the Ancient World\, edited by Jerry Sabloff.

Brody\, Professor Emeritus UNM and renowned Art Historian  \n  \nFollowed by a book signing of A River Apart: The Pottery of Cochiti and Santo Domingo Pueblos\, in conjuction with our Exhibit 'A River Apart' \n  \nArt Historian J.J. Brody in ‘A River Apart’ examines and interprets the painted pottery traditions of the two neighboring communities from a perspective shaped by sixty years’ immersion in the history of Pueblo art. He is Professor Emeritus of University  of New Mexico\, from which he holds two Ph.D.s and  in the 1970s developed the Ph.D. program in Native American Art History. He is well known for his wide body of articles and books\, and as curator of numerous exhibits.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Dancing Shadows\, Epic Tales: Wayang Kulit of Indonesia
DESCRIPTION:Wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performance of Indonesia is among the oldest and greatest story telling traditions in the world and is said to lie at the heart of Indonesian culture. Wayang kulit are flat\, leather puppets elaborately decorated and perforated\, casting intricate and dramatic shadows when performed. This is a highly refined art form that commemorates important life cycle ceremonies (such as circumcisions\, weddings\, and funerals) or social events (such as political elections or community\, religious\, and/or national holidays). Performances are usually based on classical literature such as the Indian epics\, Mahabharata and Ramayana with contemporary issues incorporated into particular scenes. In fact\, shadow puppet performance has been a popular mode of communication for ethical instruction\, news broadcasting\, and political campaigning. Performances are always accompanied by a gamelan orchestra and traditionally begin in the evening and last until dawn.    Featuring the collection of the Museum of International Folk Art\, this exhibition will introduce the distinct form and performance of wayang kulit specific to Central Java. Various aspects of this performance art will be explored\, including gamelan music\, the artistic techniques involved in making shadow puppets\, the performance of dalang (puppeteers)\, regional variations\, and the cultural context of wayang kulit.
