This version of an old Hispanic tradition recreates Mary and Joseph's search for a place to give birth to the Baby Jesus – and throws in a few devils for good measure. Stay for carols in the Palace Courtyard\, along with cookies and refreshments. Free and open to the public. \nThe History Museum and Palace will close at 3 p.m. to prepare for this event. \n For centuries\, Las Posadas has been an honored part of the Christmas tradition. In it\, families\, churches\, communities and\, in Santa Fe's case\, the Palace of the Governors\, re-enact the search by Mary and Joseph to find lodgings prior to the birth of Jesus. A typical Las Posadas celebration stretches out over nine nights — Dec. 16-24 — with different families hosting a small party for the actors and others in their homes. \n \nLas Posadas celebrations are common in northern New Mexico towns and deeply rooted in Spanish Catholic tradition. In the early 1970s\, a successful neighborhood campaign against the development of an apartment building in Santa Fe sparked what was for a while a largely secular celebration of Las Posadas. It quickly outgrew its confines on San Antonio Street\, and the then-Bank of Santa Fe asked if the neighborhood would move it to the Plaza in the early 1980s. The bank then paired with the Palace of the Governors to organize and host what has since become a beloved community tradition. \nGlobally\, the tradition of Las Posadas dates back to the 16th century and St. Ignatius Loyola\, who used an Aztec festival to teach about the birth of Christ\, turning their nine-day celebration of the birth of the Aztec Sun God with a Christian celebration. What started as a novena\, or nine days of prayer\, eventually moved from the church to the community\, to be celebrated in people's homes. Bring your questions about what it takes to care for an aging adobe structure. \nThe plastic sheets and plywood boards currently covering the windows may not show it\, but they signal progress. Lead paint has been tested and abated\, and window sashes have been taken to the contractor’s workshop for repairs. Albuquerque-based Longhorn Construction expects to complete the $54\,000 project by Dec. 1. \nLos Compadres\, a volunteer support group for the museum\, raised the money for the project. The effort has focused on windows facing the courtyard\, where rain\, snow and sun have had free rein since at least 1913\, when the building was plastered in the adobe style that’s been periodically maintained ever since. It isn’t an easy project. \nAs Sam Romero\, project manager for Longhorn\, told the Albuquerque Journal\, “We’re trying to keep the historical aspect of the materials already there. What we’re not doing is going down to Marvin’s Windows and ordering a new set.” \nRather than putting in new windows\, the ones have been pulled away. He will be bring 50 – 75 baskets for sale \nBasket Making Demonstration by Haida Weaver Jacinthe Two Bulls from 12 pm to 4 pm. She will be giving a short talk on her craft at 12:30 pm. Jacinthe Two Bulls learned to weave Haida baskets at the age of seven from her mother\, Vicki LeCornu. She  learned how to gather and prepare cedar bark and spruce roots from her mother and her maternal Uncle\, Douglas Burgess. They taught her to respect the material\, and her environment. Jacinthe has now been weaving for 21 years\, and has found the confidence in the past year to experiment outside of traditional Haida basket weaving.  \nTerry DeWald will be giving a talk on basket materials at 2 pm  using baskets from his collection as examples:  Identifying Baskets of the Western United States: Tribes\, Materials\, and Motifs. \nTo read a basket five principal traits must be taken into account: material\, construction\, form and design\, and utility. Woven Identities is divided into five sections representing these essential and diagnostic Native American basketry traits. If you ever wanted to learn the language of baskets\, begin your journey with this exhibition. \nOn exhibit are baskets woven by artists representing 60 cultural groups\, today referred to as tribes\, bands\, or pueblos. The weavers’ ancestral lands are in six culture areas of Western North America: The Southwest\, Great Basin\, Plateau\, California\, the Northwest Coast\, and the Arctic. \nBaskets can be functional. Burden baskets were for carrying. The improbable task of cooking was done in baskets—heated stones were added to food and liquid contents in meal preparation. Water was carried and clams collected in others. Baskets also served as hats (especially\, but not exclusively\, to the tourist trade). \nYet\, function does not trump beauty. Basket making techniques are inherently attractive. Among the baskets on view are examples of false embroidery\, cross weave\, plaiting\, and coiling. Materials like wrapped twine\, corn husk\, roots\, rhizomes\, stems\, branches\, leaves\, grass\, and cedar bark add their own good looks. \nOf the 241 baskets in the exhibition\, only 45 have been attributed to individual artists. The workers and peasants of France attracted Beauregard\, just as Pueblo subjects captivated Paris-trained academic painters to New Mexico. Unfortunately\, Beauregard died from cancer in 1914 before he could combine his newly acquired modernist style with New Mexico subjects. \nRefreshments provided by the Women's Board.
