SUMMARY:World War I and New Mexico A special noon lecture and remembrance
DESCRIPTION:After Pancho Villa’s March 9\, 1916\, attack on Columbus\, NM\, Gen. John J. Pershing launched a Punitive Expedition with one goal: Get Villa. Given his failure to do so\, Pershing’s effort could easily be chalked up as a military failure. But its long-term impact was significant. The surge into Mexico provided valuable training for Pershing and for New Mexico troops who would all too soon enter World War I. \nAs centenary commemorations for “The Great War” begin across the globe\, the History Museum’s interim director\, Jon Hunner\, will speak on “World War I and New Mexico” at noon on Wednesday\, July 30. This free lecture will be in the Meem Community Room; enter through the museum’s Washington Avenue doors. \nHunner is a New Mexico State University professor of history on loan to the museum. His areas of expertise include 20th-century New Mexico and the Manhattan Project. \nOn June 28\, 1914\, Archduke Franz Ferdinand\, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire\, was assassinated in Sarajevo\, along with his wife. A month later\, Emperor Franz Joseph declared war on Serbia; Russia\, Serbia’s ally\, immediately mobilized its forces. By Aug. 1\, Germany had declared war on Russia\, and the dominoes began to fall. The United States entered the war on April 6\, 1917. Armistice was achieved on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918—today commemorated as Veteran’s Day. \nWhat roles did New Mexico play in the conflict and what impact did the war have on our state? What was the Zimmerman telegram and how did it speed America’s entry into the war? Hunner will explore how events in distant lands affected the New Mexicans who served\, including the many men who gave their lives\, and how those events transformed the nation’s second-youngest state.

SUMMARY:Crash Course: How to Take an Oral History
DESCRIPTION:Join historian Jon Hunner\, interim director of the New Mexico History Museum\, and curator Meredith Davidson for an exclusive workshop on gathering and archiving oral histories. This free\, introductory course will be offered twice\, from 10 am to noon on Wednesday\, July 23\, in the Meem Community Room. The class will be repeated from 1 to 3 pm on Thursday\, Aug. 14\, in the History Museum classroom. \nSpace is limited\, so please RSVP to Tomas Jaehn at tomas.jaehn@state.nm.us to reserve a seat. \nOral histories have long been used by scholars and museums to help paint a more detailed picture of the lives of particular people and eras. But families\, neighborhoods and institutions hoping to pass on their stories can also learn to capture important voices via oral histories before they fade away. While the famous faces celebrated throughout history typically see their words preserved\, we all have important stories to tell. Efforts to capture the “everyman” tales each of us carries is a more recent pursuit—and historians can use some help catching up. Tales of summer camp\, local merchants\, reactions to national events—each of these helps historians\, genealogists\, and loved ones. \nParticipants in these workshops will explore how to conduct background research on interviewees\, create a list of questions\, develop interview techniques\, secure release forms\, work with voice recorders\, and archive the interviews. A future Crash Course this fall will discuss what to do once you have conducted an oral history. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join Santa Fe educator\, photographer and camera obscura developer Jackie Mathey for a family workshop on building a take-home tabletop camera obscura that can be used as drawing aids. Explore how light moves and images are formed. Travel in your imagination to the age of the Renaissance where devices like these were used by artists. It’s free\, but class size is limited; make a reservation by calling 505-476-5087. \nMathey has taught at the Santa Fe Photo Workshops and started a photography department at a local high school based solely on pinhole photography. DESCRIPTION:Bring the family and print a historic image of Our Lady on a replica medieval press\, an activity accompanying the exhibit Painting the Divine: Images of Mary in the New World. Free with admission. Children 16 and under free daily. \nUsing a Bobcat Press built in the 1970s by Cedar Crest’s Richard Hicks\, visitors will get a feel for how colonial artists found images to paint. Palace printers Tom Leech and James Bourland have selected an image of the Virgin investing St. Alphonso with a chasuble. In 1544\, it was the first full-page woodcut printed in a book in the Americas by the first printer in Mexico\, Juan Pablos. The book was Juan Gerson’s Tripartito del Christianissimo\, and the original block was probably carved in Iberia. It was reproduced in a reduced size in Printing in Spanish Colonial America\, by Hensley Woodbridge and Lawrence Thomson\, 1976. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe third Wednesday of each month from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. \nDuring this time\, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology are in the lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. These curators will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes\, the discussion among the curators may become as much or more informative than the identification of the artifact. \nThe event is always FREE and open to the public. Federal and State regulations prohibit the curators from appraising any artifact. Determining the Value of a Work of Art: The museum neither appraises or authenticates works of art. For information about art appraisals visit the web sites for American Society of Appraisers\, or Art Dealers Association of America. \n

DESCRIPTION:From his early background studying art history at Yale and the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU\, and his doctoral work at Johns Hopkins University\, to his position as the Winship Distinguished Research Associate Professor of Art History at Emory University\, James Meyer has been immersed in the world of Modern Art both in study and practice\, as a curator\, writer\, and professor. Early on in his career\, Meyer curated an exhibition titled\, “What Happened to Institutional Critique?” at the American Fine Arts Gallery in SoHo which garnered a great deal of attention. He gathered a group of artists engaged in critical practices around institutions\, including museums. This exhibition would prove to be the launch of a successful career. \nIn addition to his work teaching\, Meyer received research fellowships from the Smithsonian Institute and the Clark Art Institute. Meyer has written widely\, including catalogs for artists such as Howard Hodgkin\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Mel Bochner\, Eva Hesse\, Anne Truitt\, and Andrea Fraser. His essays have appeared in such journals as OCTOBER\, Grey Room\, and Artforum\, where he is a contributing editor. Meyer’s book\, Minimalism: Art and Polemics in the Sixties\, received excellent reviews\, including this from Pepe Karmel at Art in America: “By far the best account to date of Minimalism’s development and the essential point of departure for all future research on the subject.”   \nIn Meyer’s time as an Associate Curator at the National Gallery\, he has had a profound influence. He has curated two exhibitions\, “In the Tower: Mel Bochner\,” and “In the Tower: Kerry James Marshall.” The exhibition of Marshall’s work was a landmark exhibition for the National Gallery\, marking the first time a living African American artist had been given a solo exhibition at the museum. His next exhibition\, From Los Angeles to New York: The Dwan Gallery 1959-1971 is scheduled for autumn 2016 in honor of Ms. Dwan’s promised gift of her collection to the National Gallery.   \nMeyer’s lecture\, “Children of the Sixties\,” is taken from his current book in progress: Return to the Sixties: On the Meaning of the Sixties in Art and Culture. The project looks at the way artists born in the Sixties (a period from 1955 to 1979) continually return to the political and cultural milieu of that period in their work. The act of revisiting that time serves both as tribute and memorial. There is a sort of nostalgia for the Sixties as a time of radicalism and the avant-garde.  But the revisiting of the Sixties within contemporary practice also simultaneously signals its passing. \nJames Meyer’s keynote lecture on Saturday\, July 12 promises to be a fascinating addition to the dazzling array of events\, installations\, and offerings at this summer’s edition of ART Santa Fe. DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder why there’s an obelisk in the middle of the Santa Fe Plaza? Have you noticed the gargoyles on top of the Catron Building? Where was the gambling hall? Which tucked-away building held a Manhattan Project secret? \nFind out by taking a Downtown Walking Tour led by New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors guides. The tours resume on April 14(through Oct. 11)\, Monday-Saturday\, beginning at 10:15 a.m. Gather at the Palace Courtyard’s Blue Gate just south of the History Museum entrance at 113 Lincoln Ave. Cost is $10. Children 16 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Museum guides do not accept tips. (No tours are offered on the Saturdays when large events are held on the Plaza\, such as Spanish Market and Santa Fe Fiesta.) \nEach tour lasts about 2 hours and features a leisurely pace with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Enjoy stories of the people and events that have made Santa Fe a world-class tourist destination. Los Compadres del Palacio\, a support group of the New Mexico History Museum\, operates the program with guides who are trained in Santa Fe history. Learn how art conservator Cynthia Lawrence brought the hidden beauty out of 12 of the paintings. SUMMARY:Alzheimer’s Poetry Project Explores the Poetics of Light
DESCRIPTION:A special session of the nationally renowned Alzheimer’s Poetry Project comes to the New Mexico History Museum and its newest exhibit\, Poetics of Light: Pinhole Photography\, from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Wednesday\, June 25. The event is free and open to the public\, but reservations are recommended. To make reservations or for more information\, please contact Gary Glazner at gary@alzpoetry.com or go to www.alzpoetry.com. \nPeople living with dementia\, their family members and the general public are invited to attend this FREE event. Participants will perform and create poetry inspired by the Poetics of Light exhibit. Gary Glazner\, founder and executive director of the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project\, will lead the session. Glazner recently worked with the Museum of Modern Art in New York on their “Meet Me at MoMA\,” dementia program. \nThe Alzheimer’s Poetry Project performs and creates poetry with people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. Its goal is to facilitate the creativity of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. The program received the 2013 Rosalinde Gilbert Innovations in Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiving Legacy Award and the 2012 MetLife Foundation Creativity and Aging in America Leadership Award in the category of Community Engagement. The National Endowment for the Arts listed it as a “best practice” for their Arts and Aging initiative. In 2010\, the U.S. Embassy in Berlin funded a pilot project for the program in Germany. This has led the U.S. Embassy In Warsaw to fund a pilot project in Poland in 2012. \nTo date the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project has held events in 20 states and served over 15\,000 people living with dementia. The Alzheimer’s Poetry Project is funded in part by the Santa Fe Arts Commission and the McCune Foundation. \n
